Panasonic Lumix GH6 problems fixed via workarounds solutions. 14 problems on the GH6 including the streaking issue can be avoided by following three simple steps which will eliminate the problem altogether or reduce it to insignificant levels.
The GH6 is a power hungry camera due to its high bitrate encoded videos and fast frame rates e.g. 4k 120p. There are multiple options to cater for the power consumption of the GH6 depending on the requirements.
Workaround solutions for GH6 problems:
Overcoming short battery life
Option 1: Use a lightweight compact battery base such as: "Anton Bauer Titon Base", "Core SWX
PowerBase Edge Lite", and "PB Edge Link".
Option 2: Use a more flexible but slightly bigger and heavier configuration with a holder for external NPF or V-mount batteries that connect to the bottom of the camera such as: Tilta TA-BSP3-V, TA-BSP2-V, and TA-BSP-F970.
Option 3: The biggest and heaviest solution is to rig out the camera with a camera cage and necessary rig to attach a V-mount battery.
Alternatively in order to reduce the power consumption of the battery in the camera:
- disable WiFi/bluetooth
- disable DR boost
- disable stabilisation
- use manual focus instead of continuous auto-focus
- use the lens' zoom less frequently
- use manual lenses
- use lower frame rates
- use lower resolutions
- write to a single memory card slot instead of backup recording
- do not use the HDMI port
- do not use an external microphone or the audio adapter
- reduce brightness of the back screen
Workaround fix for GH6 streaking issue
1. Upgrade GH6 camera firmware to version 2.2 or higher.
2. Use lower ISO settings as the impact is less at lower ISO settings.
3. Enable DR boost as it lessens the effect of streaking.
Overcome accidental key presses
Configure a button on the camera for locking controls and the touch screen to avoid accidental changes.
Workaround for dual recording
1. Use low bitrate encodings to record to both the SD card and CF Express at the same time.
2. Output video to HDMI and record video via an external recorder while simultaneously recording to internal memory cards or SSD.
Expensive memory cards
1. Use USB-C for external recording to cheap SSD devices which have a large storage capacity in comparison to CF Express cards and SD cards.
2. Use HDMI output to record externally to a recorder which allows usage of cheaper storage options.
Freezing problem
1. After turning on the camera wait for some time before operating the camera. This ensures all initialisation processes of the camera have been completed.
2. Do not press buttons in quick succession to allow the camera for more processing time between each action.

That was quite a good breakdown. Thank you. I agree much of those issues are not a big deal, and there is likely no camera that doesn't have a similar smattering of issues. One would have hoped that since the GH6 was long overdue and delayed, Panasonic would have ironed more of it out. But then they couldn't sell us the G9II or GH7, right? I think the bottom line is that this needs to be thought of in terms of a mini cinema camera, more so than the hybrid way we thought of the GH5. The fact that there is no battery grip is a way that Panny perhaps underscored that this is not for photo work (despite the great hi-res capability).

Agreed, I am looking forward to the next iteration of this camera but I will skip the G9II because it lacks an active cooling system which is must for me but it should be good for photography oriented users.

My main issue with the GH6 is the out of focus bug in AF-C as soon as I press the record button when using 4K, C4K, 5,7K in 24,25 and 30fps. The focus becomes instantly innacurate, like if the cameras was front or back focusing slightly. The only lens I have without this issue is the 25mm f1.4II. My 10-25mm,25-50mm,12-60mm, 100-400mm, 25mm f1.2 etc have the issue. I have no issue when using 48, 60 or 120fps. 5,8K Open Gate is free from this issue too, the focus is much slower than the GH5 and pulses a lot as soon as I use an higher focus speed.

is this the normal behaviour of contrast detect auto-focus or is that in addition to the typical contrast detect auto-focus behaviour? Regarding the increased pulsing with higher focus speeds, that seems in line with contrast detect auto-focus. On Olympus cameras there are two separate settings for the autofocus: - speed of obtaining focus, and - sensitivity i.e. camera's reaction time I find that by being able to adjust these two, it allows me work around the problem and I wish Panasonic cameras also had this.

@@RadCameraMan No, it is not the normal behaviour of contrast detect AF because my GH5 and G9 have not this issue at all. On the Panasonic cameras, you can choose the sensitivity and speed as well, but the out of focus bug remains no matter the settings used.

I rarely use continuous autofocus but I checked my settings and I have "AF Speed" set to the maximum i.e. +5 and "AF sensitivity" set to the minimum (-3). The minimum sensitivity should reduce the frequency of hunting/pulsing and the maximum speed should make sure if there is hunting/pulsing it lasts the shortest possible time. Another setting which might be useful is the "Focus Limiter" by setting the min/max distance, any focus hunting will limit the extent to which the image may appear out of focus since the full focus range is not used by the camera. This should reduce the severeness of out of focus parts. This is how I use the camera when I use continuous AF but I don't know whether this will be practical for what you are shooting and whether it has any effect on the bug that you mentioned because you mentioned that you don't encounter this problem with all lenses or frame rates. Another thing I have noticed on other cameras which I wonder if the GH6 also does is that when zooming in or out, the camera attempts to re-obtain focus in order to provide the illusion that the lens is parfocal. In which case it could be using AF Speed and AF Sensitivity values during this process. This is something that definitely happens on other cameras, but I am not sure if it is also the case for the GH6. If the GH6 also does this, then having your hand on the zoom ring and causing small movements could trigger the re-focusing action and result in the pulsing.

As far as the battery is concerned, I have no problems with it, in my work. I have the GH5 ii as well. Both of these cameras can be powered for a very long time using the USB-C port. If the USB battery runs out or gets unplugged the internal battery will allow the camera to continue to record without a problem. I don't experience the long startup that you demonstrate here, I think it is because I have a more powerful USB battery. I also have two GH5s and I power them with a USB battery as well but I have to use a dummy battery. This is much less effective solution: there is no backup should the USB battery run out or get disconnected, the camera will eventually lose date and time because there is no internal battery and you can't turn the camera on without connecting the USB battery. I record to my CF Express card and to my Ninja V at the same time without any problem.

Thanks for sharing details of your approach. I also use the same setup for powering the camera despite the slower startup time and regarding redundant recording, I record to CF Express and SD card but obviously at lower bitrates since the SD card only supports 720 Mbps. I prefer that to the Ninja V (plus batteries, cable, monitor mount) since it is lighter and more practical for my purposes.

Def cinema beast rigged out. Spot on🎉.my question is complicated. Setup is gh6 w lidar ,rs3 w new fw, atomos ninja hdmi in raw ,out hdmi to hollyland 4k tx to shogun rx . I get no option to record control shutter or record button to trigger hdmi record. Also gimbal record button is not triggering record. I have to touch the shogun record airglu by pressing screen record and it has to have a card aswell to show record start stop button.many more probs. I dont expect you to address my issues. Very confusing and beyond just gh6 prob due to too many components. I do think at one point in time i was allowed to hit shutter on gh6 to trigger record on the ninja but not on setup on gimbal. Sorry for such comment.great video.Thank You

If I remember correctly if the HDMI recording control is enabled then it should be possible to start/stop recording from an external recorder. I wonder if the multiple devices are overriding each other. There are a lot of devices involved so I wonder whether you can isolate the problem using only the ninja then add each additional device one by one to find out what is causing the problem. I don't have the same equipment to test that configuration.

I have already watched first 4 minutes of your video and I clearly see, that ALL those so-called "problems" are NOT PROBLEMS AT ALL! You're probably the ONLY person I know who nailed these items as "problems"...!

@@RadCameraMan Of course, I do! As well as couple of GH5's, a GH5S and GH4. And OF COURSE I use dummy battery couplers - and none of them are genuine but work perfect since 2015.

@@TheBEDUIN18 either really... so when I want to have redundancy I chose an encoding which is below 720Mbps so that I can record to both the SD card and the CFExpress card but ideally I would like to use higher bitrates with all-intra encoding.

Hi, thanks for the helpful video. Do you know why the histogram on the GH6 always overloads? For me, the bars in the histogram are almost always at the top and the peaks extend beyond that. No matter what you set. Auto or manual - it is always the case that the bars go over the edge in the histogram

Do you mean they overflow in the vertical direction at the top or do they overflow to the left and right direction?

@@RadCameraMan Actually upwards. But today I realized that it must be my fault. It stayed well within the range in Auto mode today. But if I change the settings to manual, I always have the deflection at the top that would go even further than with clipping. even if I use the same settings as the camera in auto mode.

@@dre1z3hn The vertical orientation overflowing upwards indicates the quantity of a certain brightness level (color) in number of pixels, so it is fine for this to overflow. If the histogram overflows to the left or right, that is a problem and it means that part of the image are being blown out due to being too bright if it overflows to the right and shadows are being crushed into black if it overflows to the left. So the histogram overflowing upwards is fine, since it is only an indication of how much of a particular brightness level is in your photo. There is nothing wrong with this. Please let me know if I should provide more information or clarify further.

How were you able to connect you camera to your phone as an external display?

I connect the HDMI output of the camera to a video capture card and that connects to the phone via USB-C. I can then use the phone as an external display, recording device, or to stream.

I agree that it is a good camera 💯 and that's why I use this camera, but I am not sure what was negative since I was only stating facts about the disadvantages of this camera. Please let me know if any of the information that I provided is incorrect?

The way I see it is that this information might be useful to someone who is considering purchasing this camera and comparing it to other cameras such as the Lumix GH5 mark 2. Some of the flaws that I pointed out do not exist in cameras that were made many years ago, such as longer battery life, better ergonomics, availability of battery grip, absence of streaking problem, etc. Whenever I want to buy a camera I would like to know the problems that a camera may have as it will help me decide which camera to buy. So even though it might seem like nitpicking, depending on someone's requirements this information could be useful in my opinion.
