So much camera for the money. Still in love years later. The kit lens is also the best kit lens I've ever had with a camera and I've been doing this a very long time.

You cannot beat the B&H deal of the camera with kit lens, a telephoto lens (45 to 150 mm), UV filter, 32 GB memory card and camera bad... all for $497.99. Bough mine last month and love it.

Hi Mathieu, I've been watching your videos and they are great, thank you. Got a quick question. Which camera do YOU recommend, RX100 iv OR G7 OR GX85 for 4k videos and stills please? I've heard GX85 is not so good for videos, what do YOU think please?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 лет назад
The GX85 is good for video but the G7 has more options (Cine-Like profiles, mic input, fully articulated screen). The quality is similar (you can see a comparison video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fjsnNmuh7M4.html) The RX100 IV has great slow motion capabilities but I wouldn't use it as my main camera for video: battery life drains really fast and 4K is limited to 5min per clip.

Great review - I'm wavering between the Panny and an Olympus - I have no Olympus cameras so desperately want to try one - but right now the GX80 is marking an awful lot of cards..... Olympus needs to get their pricing on the Pen or Pen type cameras into more reasonable territory. For now it looks like the GX80 is the smarter buy... in my opinion of course

Just subscribed! Really enjoy your honest, straightforward reviews ... I was all set to jump on a GX8 (esp. now they are nearly half what they used to be..) but I have concerns about the shuttershock I've heard about. But I'm wavering on a GX80 because the EVF on the GX8 looks to be better than the GX80 (I too wear glasses and it makes a difference). Also, the weather sealing, while not a huge deciding factor sure would be nice...What are your thoughts? Which would you choose with limited funds? Thanks!
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 8 лет назад
The EVF is definitely better on the GX8 and weather sealing is a welcome addition. The shutter shock is quite annoying. Personally I sold my GX8 and bought the GX80. I'll use it mainly for product shots and for my youtube videos as it has everything I need (4K, IBIS, compactness etc). I guess it depends on what your needs are and what kind of shooting you are planning to make. For example if you shoot lots of outdoor sports or wildlife where the weather is not always on your side, weather sealing can help.

Hello my friend from Atlanta Georgia wow that Panasonic is packed with features Panasonic is number one I don't care what anybody says they make a great camera and mostly they have a viewfinder on their compact cameras where Canon and some of the other manufacturers don't even give you that and I believe in having a viewfinder specially in sunlight I don't depend on the screen in sunlight you have to have 20/20 vision to look at that screen in sunlight because of the glare but the viewfinder is really great I have a couple of their cameras the ZS 85 and ZS50 and to me these are both great cameras they work excellent but this camera that youour showing looks a little more beefier and heavy just by looking at it thank you so much for your presentation I thought it was excellent

there is the possibility of buying an optional AC adaptor and DC coupler to power the camera without worrying about battery life so there could be the possibility with a power bank as well.

Thank you, great review. I'm trying to decide on my first mirrorless. The idea is to get a camera that does everything not best in class, but well for the next couple of years. The purpose is to have it as a walk around/travel camera with small zoom and a 17mm prime. Would you say gx80 is better than e-m 10 m2 aside the 4K capability?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons

Mathieu thanks for this review I was eager to see something like this, definitely I will purchase the gx 80. I'm just wondering if I want to shot a video with a person, do you think that the gx 80 is capable of track an human face without any problems? I know that is impossible to have a performance like Canon eos80d but just to know. Cheers
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 8 лет назад
+Nuno Rodrigues you would get mixed results I think. If you have a look at my IBIS comparison between the GX80 and the Pen F, there are a few shots where I follow a person walking and some of these GX80 shots are sligthly out of focus because I was using C-AF. It's worst with Olympus lenses but still it's not 100% accurate.

@ipushlines
@ipushlines 8 лет назад
Mathieu, when using EF or vintage/manual lens, do you double the focal length? There seems to be 3 camps, the double camp, leave it as is and some even suggest half? Focal length is fixed therefore it doesn't matter if it goes on full or crop frame argument makes sense to me, but I am not certain. What do you suggest? Great review, btw.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 8 лет назад
+Line Push I set the real focal length, not the equivalent. If you double the focal length the IBIS can overdue and create more shakes.

One question I noticed in the video that when talking about the new shutter and how it sounds, you cut away showing the shutter sound of the gx7 and not this camera :(. Matthew, Is the G85 (new G7) a step up to the Gx85? what besides weatherproofing is the advantage? also, how does the range finder style work for videos?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 лет назад
The sensor and AF system are the same for both cameras. So the real advantage is weather proof, more ergonomic body, bigger battery, mic in and more settings for video (Cine-Like profiles). Dual IS should be a little bit better on the G85.

Hey Mathieu! Loved, LOVED the review! It was well worth the wait. One question: Since the AF/MF dedicated switch is gone, can you assign that to a custom Fn function instead? Or do you have to do it on the screen every single time?

Hi Mathieu. Great video, thanks. I currently have the GX7 and just ordered the new Panasonic 100-400mm for wildlife photography. Can I ask your opinion - you mentioned that the IBIS is particularly good for telephoto lenses. Is it worth me upgrading to gx80 from gx7 for the benefit of IBIS and lens stabilisation? Or would the differences be insignificant?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 8 лет назад
with the GX80 you would benefit of the Dual IS system with that lens so there is a significant improvement. The new camera also has a new shutter mechanism that eliminates any problem of shutter shock. That being said, the GX7 has a better grip in my opinion. I would try the lens with the GX7 first to see if the lens OIS is enough. If you are satisfied with the combo then you can wait to upgrade.

+John M Flores : Do you get the twitch or jerky movement when panning as shown on review? My copy (so far) doesn't have this problem. Wondering if I got lucky or if it's a telephoto lens thing? I've panned with kit 12-32mm and 25mm 1.4 Fotasy in 4k. I have telephoto lenses but I'm waiting for a converter. I'm surprised by the results. Kit lens is lovely and stable. I wasn't expecting much as I have shaky noodle arms. Initially, I was searching for a cam + a gimbal but now I don't need that combo. I really love the inconspicuous minimalist boring box design. Personally not a fan busy retro multi dial look. I would say the grip is iffy even with my kid sized hands. It's not deep enough. Maybe add a hot shoe handle for video? But the other stuff, like in camera USB charging, electronic shutter, the extras makes thing easier. I love it so far.
@JohnMFlores
@JohnMFlores 8 лет назад
Line Push Yeah, horizontal pans are not the best. I tried to set stabilization for panning (like in photo modes) but that feature is not available when shooting video. I suspect that longer lenses magnify the problem, literally. "Shaky noodle arms" LOL. I feel the same way and I was also considering a gimbal for an upcoming motorcycle trip but I think I'll make do without one. My brother has the GX7 and the grip is much better. I walked a mile with the GX85 yesterday and at first my fingers got tired because I was holding on tightly. Once I relaxed my hold and let my fingers and thumb press lightly against the camera things were better. And the wrist strap is there, just in case.

Im looking for a camera good in both stills and video but there is a jungle:) I had looked into to just start up with a GM1, kit with the 12-32 mm as many has liked that camera. But then after watching some reviews maybe the GX 80, the lx 100 or even the tz100 is an option. The LX 100 seems nice but misses some of the good stuff in the GX85. Do you think it comes a new LX model in september? Hope you can advise me here and thanks for all of your nice reviews.

Rumors suggest that a new LX camera is coming but even if it is true, between the announcement and the actual release, it probably won't be available before fall. Thank you for the video. I'm using canon d700 for years now and I'm looking to move to a smaller size camera that has at least the same quality. I noticed that the sensor size in gx80 is smaller than the one I'm using now. How does this effect the quality? Thank you
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 лет назад
+danit elgev a larger sensor can give you more dynamic range and better high ISO performance but often the difference between APS-C and micro four thirds is not his huge. There is also the shallow depth of field factor: with the same aperture and field of view, you'll have a shallower result on the the Canon. One solution is to use fast primes on the GX80 which give you excellent results wide open already.

@YameSten
@YameSten 8 лет назад
Is the EVF good? Because I read a review from DP that said the EVF was bad because of the 16:9 ratio, like the color tearing was really noticeable in bright light. And is the image really small since it's in 16:9 compared to 4:3? In your review you didn't mention it so I'm hoping it isn't a big issue. I'm looking to purchase my first mirrorless camera, and I'm considering this camera, the Olympus OMD-EM10 mk. II, and the Canon EOS M3.

@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 8 лет назад
probably the G7 can be more versatile. The mic input is helpful if you don't want to record the audio on a separate device and I like the Cine-Like profile. The only real advantage of the GX85 is in-body stabilisation but it depends if you shoot a lot hand held or not (and you can always use a lens with OIS on the G7, not the same result but acceptable).

Happy New Year! I've just bought this camera complete with the 12-32 compact kit lens. I think it is great for its compact size. The best part and what persuaded me to buy is the current price after the £200 Cashback offer. It nets down to £247 for body only and £347 with the single kit lens. That's half the price Mathieu thought was one of the best deals available back in June or July. I'm quite familiar with Lumix G series cameras, my last one being a G7 with a G6 preceding it. I'm amazed at the extra features they incorporate with each new generation. As far as the GX80 goes, I love the in-body image stabilisation, extra 4K still features, its compact size and its price. Not so keen on losing several Fn buttons or on the rear control wheel. This camera will replace my Fuji X20, as they are both about the same size as long as either the kit lens or one of several other compact ones available are fitted. The GX80 feels much heavier though. Its also far more advanced [than the X20] and, of course, has the versatility of fitting any M4/3 lens on it.

Thank you for such helpful review! Just a question that I am struggling on, I was planning to get the LX100 for daily and street photography, but then I just found out there is this GX80... It makes me so undecided now, which one should I go for?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 лет назад
The LX100 is a nice camera with an excellent lens. It doesn't have some of the features you can find in the GX80 (tilting screen, Dual IS etc) but I enjoyed using mine for several months and I did lots of videos with it as well. I sold it mainly because I review cameras and I can't keep everything :) The GX80 gives you more flexibility if you want to use different lenses, that's the main difference so the decision factor should be: are you also interested in using telephoto lenses or extreme wide angle lenses. Would you prefer to work with fast prime lenses or the LX100 lens is enough for your needs?
@RazyHim

the G7 has the cine-like profiles, a mic input (3.5mm) and a better grip and those are welcome for video. The G80 has the advantage of IBIS and Dual IS stabilisation. IQ for stills is very similar if not the same. So it depends if you need a more complete and ergonomic body to shoot video or not.

Great review, many thanks for the comparison between the GX80 and the GX7. I was thinking about upgrading, but will stick with the GX7. I don't need many of the 4K features and focus bracketing. I like the new shutter and better IS and DFD but wont trade it against the tilting viewfinder, the better grip on the GX7, the MF/AF switch and the better body material. In fact, practically none of my GX7 photos are not in focus or show problems with IS. And BTW, I consider the GX7 as one of the best looking cameras ever. This year I will invest in lenses instead and wait for next years mft lineup.

I believe you have the GX8 in your camera arsenal. I have a G7 and shot no video, I like the camera but because of my early onset of Parkinson Decease, I feel that the Stabilization in the GX8 and GX85/80 would be beneficial. I have the 14-140 and 12-32 OIS Lumix lens. There seems to be some great pricing on the GX8 all of a sudden. What camera would you recommend my getting? Thanks, David
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 8 лет назад
The GX85 has the best stabilisation but the GX8 does well with OIS lenses that are compatible with Dual IS. The GX8 has a larger EVF and better grip. However it has sever shutter shock between 1/50 and 1/320s (an issue that Panasonic solved in the GX85).

Excellence review!! I am interested in this one since my EM5 just broke down and I need to find some camera to use. What do you think? Well, tilt EVF is not a big problem to me since EM5 doesn't has it from the beginning but it will be very useful for my beloved area (Macro). No built-in wireless flash trigger and no weather seal is quite a pain for me as well. Light composition is grey area for me because I think it will be the same as Olympus's. How about the quality of RAW file? I use it so often before the camera broke down.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 8 лет назад
+Kunut Manathanya the RAW file is good and overall the IQ is superior to the original E-M5 that has an older sensor (especially at high ISO, past 3200). However since you know Olympus cameras already, why not consider the E-M5 II? It's weather sealed and has wireless flash trigger with the supplied FL-LM3 flash. If you want the spent less, there is also the E-M10 II (but you loose weather sealing).
@Zosazat
@Zosazat 8 лет назад
I am thinking about EM5 mkii as well, I really love the design. Here are the reasons why I look at Panasonic; 1. They got panorama in-camera (still curious why Olympus didn't make this function?) which I think I may use more frequent than flash trigger. 2. Focus speed is quite better for me but most of my lenses are Olympus's, not sure it will be any difference. 2. GX80 got a built-in flash 3. The body size is quite similar (GX8 is too big for me) and also got IBIS 4. I afraid of camera fault and other QC problems. For 2 years of use EM5, I got shutter curtain fault twice (one after warranty end and second one is after extra 6-month warranty end but this time I didn't fix it but will find a new camera instead). This is not include other faults that I face on the first year of use. I love EM5 but with this annoying problems, if there are any better option, I would take it. I guess I need to go to some shop and try this GX80 myself to see if I like it or not. Anyway, thanks for your suggestion and any further suggestion will be very welcome :)

The Sigma art lenses are excellent. Stunning sharpness and very affordable price. The 60mm is probably the best because it's a good telephoto lens for portraits and gives you nice result at 2.8. The 25mm is slightly fast with the AF in comparison to the 20mm, otherwise they are both excellent lenses. The 20mm is very compact so you can fit it everywhere really.

The IQ is basically identical on both cameras. You get a little bit of extra sharpness with the GX80 because it lacks the AA filter. Hi Mathieu, would you say the gx80 is a worthwhile upgrade from the g7 for a still centric shooter?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons

The most obvious advantage is sensor stabilisation. If you use a lot of non-OIS lenses it can be interesting for you. The compact size is another advantage but perhaps a better question is: is there something about the G7 that doesn't satisfy you?
@muttyhc
@muttyhc 8 лет назад

The lack of AA filter is noticeable only in a few situations (fine texture/textile in a close-up shot for example), but most of the time there is no difference. The JPG engine is good but I haven't compared it side by side with the G7 so I can't confirm.

great review Mathie, been looking for gx85 review like this one. but still dont know which one to buy, the G7 , GX7 or GX85. does the IBIS & 5axis really bring significant result , or it just more gimmick. I love the G7 because the screen and input for external mic, but g7 lack the IBIS, meanwhile gx85 downside is lack of mic connector.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 лет назад
IBIS does make a difference yes. It's not as good as the Olympus IBIS but it definitely gives you something more than just optical stabilisation (and of course the advantage is even more relevant when using non stabilised lenses). If you like the G7, design, perhaps you could consider the G85 which has the same design, mic input and IBIS.

@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 8 лет назад
+armaniusmaximus I admit I was more inspired with the Pen F, but that becomes very personal. If I had to use the GX80 instead I am sure I could produce similar results in the end. With the Pen F you appreciate the precise design and the great feel with its dials, it feels more like a camera from the start. The GX80 has a more modern design and is more convenient as an hybrid solution. The connection might be less "emotional" but it gets the job done and it does it well. Actually I'm considering replacing my GX8 with the GX80 for our youtube videos and the shots we need for our website. It's convenient to have one small camera that can do everything.
