I own the LX100 the ZS100 and the LX10 - also the Canon G7X - RX100 - RX100m4 love your show - keep them coming - thanks for all your good shows the LX10 is really nice little camera - has all the features of more expensive models and is loaded with features - 4k photo / burst - Post focus - Stacked focus - etc etc This is a ultra small body - so yes do not expect hot shoe, mic in and headphone jacks :) this is a small pocketable camera - not a pro video machine - as such it is nice - gives sharper images then the Canon G7X - and it gives you 10 min 4k videos with out overheating issues - where as my RX100m4 is dead at 3-5 min - and in warm weather 3min - The LX10 has the F1.4 at 24mm - so best light gathering in its class - I just tilt camera upside down - no issue with high up shots The RX100m4 is nice and has the EVF - but also $300 more - but I love the interface of the LX10 - Full Touch LCD - with 5 soft Fn buttons - problem free 4K - For me the fun factor to use the LX10 over my RX100m4 is clear - the LX10 a clear winner -

the Lx 10 the clear winner? I'm trying to decide between LX10, Sony RX100 V or Panasonic G85 for vlogging purposes- do you not find the AF on the LX10 a bit slow? How is the image stabilization with the LX 10? WHat are teh max bitrates for UHD and FHD with eth LX 10? (I have two m43 panasonic cam bodies- GH3 & GX8 already and quite a few lenses but none on the wider focal length, wide aperture AF end yet) but am atttracted to the G85 for its dual IS 2 and external mic option..- Thank you for any feedback

Kaysha I ordered the rx100 mk v since I found an open box like new one for over $120 off and for fast paced vlogging the sony's ultra fast world class AF for me is the winner plus 24fps raw photos, 960fps slow mo, viewfinder and higher FHD bitrates (Sony shoots FHD at 60Mbps..the LX 10 only at 28Mbps) (I have Panasonic gx8 and g85 for 4K photo and interchangeable lenses and g85 the best stabilization and in 4K too

justinspirational great, I'm sure you will love it. I have the GH4 and been vlogging with the GF7 with a 15mm Leica. But the lack of IS is a nightmare for vlogs. I have long hesitated between the g7x and the rx100v but the features of the lx10 are perfect for me and I stay in the panasonic universe
@justinspirational

congrats on your new purchase- is the IS known to be good with the LX 10 (couldn't see any info on that in my research which is partially why I couldn't resist the G85 too, with Dual IS 2 in up to 4k amongst other things)- I come from a m43 panasonic (GH3 & GX8) line too with a bunch of lenses but no stabilization (for video at least) and no decent wide enough AF lens for vlogging (I have a manual focus 12mm t1.6 which isn't practical for vlogging)- how is the leica 15mm for vlogging?- is it wide enough and is the panasonic wide angle converter compatible with it? Is this it? www.adorama.com/ipc1517b.html?gclid=Cj0KEQiA39_BBRD0w-_rmOrc__8BEiQA-ETxXQv-r8xuBctxx-XtredkuFT7cHUu1JhZfMsElq8irHsaAuyI8P8HAQ Thank you

It's amazing this camera and review is four years old, and it's still interesting enough for me to pick it up a Black Friday deal (for probably half of the price it was introduced when launched). Great detailed walkthrough, review and discussion in this unique format as always! Btw, you can actually power the LX10/15 into Playback without extending the lens, but it does requires two fingers: One holding the playback button, the other flipping the power switch to ON. I really enjoy this camera as a daily "24-70 in my pocket". Love the fact it can assign ISO directly to a dial (I use the front dial around the lens for it) that makes manual ISO control a joy, just like the DC-G9 I use otherwise (Direct ISO control on the rear dial). I have a ton of other Panasonic m43 cameras that does NOT allow you to do this... and here so important, allowing me to really take advantage of that image stabilizer while shooting quick and easy in P mode and enjoying every second of it.

Best low light 1inch sensor camera on the market. No evf or tilting screen because this would add weight, bulk and cost. You want an evf slightly larger sensor, go for the lx100, it's more expensive and a bit bigger. Can't put super fast low F stop lenses on large sensors without increasing the physical size of the lens. So it's always a compromise of size weight and costs. I've got the lx100 and also a fuji x100 type camera, this has a much larger Apsc sensor an F2 fixed lens and evf, but it's pretty big, can fit in a large coat pocket, it's also far more expensive. I've also got the lx100 and multiple full frame and Apsc bodied DSLR's, and lenses. This lx15 will be my next camera due to its size and speed of lens. It's not going to be able to take a photo of a black cat running around an unlit coal mine like my 1dx with 50mm f1.4 lens. But I can at least put it in my pocket and grab some great low light street scene shots. Plus the video should be pretty good. I'm unsure if the f1.4 using a crop on 4k, will yield such good results as the lx100mk1, that uses about 1inch of the sensor in 4k mode at f1.7, which is actually a larger sensor area used than on the lx100 mk2. But should be better than most of the offerings from canon, Sony or Nikon in the 1inch camera sensor market. For those looking for a camera for specific needs, do plenty of research, less is sometimes more and vice versa. More pixels allow for more cropping, but less pixels mean they are bigger in size and produce better lower light, slower shutter speed photos, with all other things being equal

I was very excited about the LX10 because on paper it seems to be a winner. However, RU-vid video comparisons of actual footages seem to tell us otherwise. Two years after this review, the top 3 contenders are still the RX100 V (the VI is different), LX10 and G7X mk2, in no particular order.

I have the LX5 (from 2010) and I feel from watching this video that this new LX10/15 is the real successor to the LX5. The LX7 was a small upgrade but this camera has a 1" sensor and all the rest. It is amazing what Panasonic have done.

Power on with the play button? OMG I've had the TZ-35 for 4 years and I nevre knew that. I just tried it now and it powers on straight into play mode, amazing. Well, I can't miss a feature I never knew I had haha. I'm thinking of getting the LX-15 for travelling and good night time city shots.

Great video guys and as an amazing coincidence, just as you said you liked the option on a compact where you can just press the playback button as well as the power button to turn it on, I was pressing the playback button on my Fujifilm F600EXR. So I agree with you, it's a feature I want and use all the time.

That's the most interesting pillow fabric design behind you....last week, (June 2020) I bought a Fuji XM1 body mint for 150. With that great tilting screen. The 16-50 for $140. It's square format jpeg, especially using black and white, is amazing. I'm testing it as a 20"x20" print this week. From the jpeg. Looks like I need to use manual focus in video mode, tho, to escape from the continual auto focus.

Good review. However I miss one thing. I understand that the LX15 dont have stabilisation for 4k video. Would this kind of render it useless for handhelt shooting 4k? That would be a really big issue. And the crop, would 36mm work for the moste case?

Gordon, Doug, thanks for the great review of the LX10/15. I am currently looking for a compact camera with 1 inch sensor or larger with about 24-70mm eq lens, hotshoe, mic input, flipping screen(or fully articulating), and good video autofocus. Do you know if such camera exist? I am planning to use it for both off camera flash environmental portrait and for vlogging using small shotgun mic on top. Thank you in advance!
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 лет назад
Sadly while some of the small 1in models have hotshoes, there aren't mic inputs on any of them - you need to go to the larger DSLR-styled models to get a mic input. I really think the manufacturers are missing a trick here for vloggers.
@Gary_W
@Gary_W 7 лет назад
I really think so too Gordon, I see more and more people are looking for such small camera for vlogging with option to enhance audio, me included, but no such camera exist yet. Anyway thanks for the reply Gordon, seems like I'm stuck with my GX8 for vlogging, which in my opinion isn't small enough.

Thanks Gordon. I've got a question, I've used my a6000 for video making a lot and more often than not my a6000 over heats when I'm recording a 20 minute clip or longer, even in a fairly cold outdoor environment. One instance in fact while recording a short interview for a psychology class, my 6000 over heated around the 20 minute mark, an a5000 that I was using for the second camera heated shortly after that. Have you, or anyone else reading this, experienced this consistent over heating issue during video with the a6000 or more broadly on these small mirrorless bodies in general? I've been a camera labs reader for years, thanks for the consistent info.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 лет назад
Hi Ben, yes sadly it's not uncommon on bodies this size, although they are getting better at it. On the more recent A6300 and A6500, I've been able to film for the best part of an hour, and in 4k too. As far as the older A6000 is concerned, you can help things by tilting the screen up to allow airflow behind it. It should improve things a little, but you'll still come up against overheating before long on that model.

Thanks for your review- does it have AF sensitivity adjustment like the new feature the G85 comes with? What are the bitrates for FHD and UHD? How is the stablization for on the go 'vlogging'? (trying to decide between this, the G85 and sony RX100 V for vlogging..(I already have m43 lenses though yet to invest in a fast wide angle AF lens)

justinspirational I think my next camera would be the G85. I have the ep5 and recently gf7. Love the 5 axis on the ep5 love the touch screen on the gf7 and the selfie screen. I hope the 5 axis on the G85 is as good as Olympus.
@justinspirational
@justinspirational 7 лет назад
Prime Tambayong I ended up getting the g85 for interchangeable lenses and dual IS 2 and the Sony rx100v for a compact pocketable size instead of the lx10 as it has superior AF, up to 1000 fps slow Mo, higher 1080p bitrates (60 Mbps a opposed only 28 with the lx10 & g85) an evf and up to 24fps shooting raw stills as well as great IS and (limited) 4K

I tried this camera and liked quite alot about it with its good stills and video quality and various features. But I found the image stabilization was its Achilles heel as it is really poor in 1080p and it was a dealbreaker for me, so I will try out the G7X Mark II instead.

I'm really torn between the lx15 and the RX100v for vlogging. Having lots of Panasonic cameras already, I'm used to their menus and image already, but Sony's universe looks interesting too
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 лет назад
They're both great choices - both have screens that will face you, both have 1080 or 4k video, sadly neither has an external mic input though. The Lumix is much cheaper though - you're paying a premium for the RX100 V to have the ultra slow motion video and phase-detect AF, and remember the Lumix also has a touchscreen whereas the Sony does not.

It's a real shame about no ND filter, otherwise what's not to like about it. I had a used Sony RX100 mk iv and it may have had fantastic specs but was terrible to handle-no grip, unless you buy one which looked weird on mine and didn't feel right. Kudos to Panasonic-they do make innovative cameras with excellent lenses-and competitively priced, too! So despite no ND filter, the LX10 is still the clear winner because it is simply giving a more pleasing overall user experience at a far better price! Oh, and excellent video weighing up pros an cons and making choosing cameras easier based on your undeniable expertise :)

Sad to see the MULTI-ASPECT RATIO SENSOR abandoned on the LX series here, but the 1" sensor pixel density is ideal for pocketability. Also, at least they should have the reach of 24-90mm, like the LX-5 had. 72mm isn't a real tele. I don't understand why multi-aspect isn't more popular. I use it all the time on the LX100; though, the LX100 is too large for carryability. Someone needs to include a mic jack. Great video with lousy audio makes no sense. Great review!

Thanks Gordon for the great review. I am planning on buying the LX10 primarily for the faster lens. My primary use will be photography and wide angle interiors. Given those aspects, I chose the LX10 over the Sony RX100V. My question to you is how does the LX10 compare to the RX100V for interior potentially low light situations at 24mm? I would assume the LX10 would win but did your experience confirm that assumption?
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 лет назад
Well, f1.4 is two thirds of a stop brighter than f1.8, so when both are at 24mm, the Lumix will be able to deploy a sensitivity 2/3 of a stop slower. But the sensor on the Sony is more modern. I hope to do a direct comparison - currently testing the Mark V so can't say for sure.

Hello Gordon Really enjoying this reveiw - your presenting of the cameras features are really very informative and gives a great overview while still being easy to follow. I am seriously considering buying a "pocket size" digital camera for the days where I don't want to carry my full frame camera with a couple of lenses with me. Now I realise, that I am a bit late to the party given the 3 cameras I will mention, but right now, mainly because of the price today in 2023, I am considering the Lumix LX15 vs. the Sony RX100 Mk.3 or to go with the Ricoh GRII that has an aps-c sensor which I guess is an advantage over the 1" of the other two, but on the other hand is limited to a fixed 28mm focal length. I am in two minds about the EVF that only the Sony has, but coming from traditional still photography, both digital and analog, I tend to be weary about being without a viewfinder. I know it is probably just about getting used to shooting from a screen, but I worry that it will take away the feeling of shooting a camera and being too much like using a smartphone "camera" ? However, the absolutely most important thing is image quality - so comparing the 3 options, LX15, RX100M3 and GRII (favouring maybe the two 1" for their zoom ability and considerably lower used price) .......... which one would you recommend ? Oh, and by the way, I should maybe add that I mostly shoot in aperture priority, so the dedicated aperture ring is a big bonus for me :-) Thanks in advance !! You just gained another subscriber ! :-) Cheers Peter

I just picked up a very good, used Sony RX100VA and, as a Sony shooter, am very impressed with it and happy with my choice. I love having the viewfinder on it and it is a good one. However, within one day of owning it, I purchased and installed the Sony AG-R2 accessory attachment grip ( $20 CAD) which is more or less a "must have" as the camera body is very small and very smooth and awkward to hold -the RX100 M3 has the identical body. The grip makes a world of difference in confidently holding the camera. I also purchased an extra battery and charger for it. and currently am using a Peak Design neck or wrist strap to securely hold it. Ergonomics is definitely something to consider when purchasing these cameras- it would be best if you could actually try them out before you buy.

Actually, of all the rx100 series, m3 is the best choice if you're only interested in photos and not 4k. And I think 4k is nonsense for non vlogger people. I tested all of them and I bought the rx100m3 last month. My main criteria is viewfinder, hi.res LCD, the fast focusing lense and the size+weight.

I really can't decide either, I am between the RX 100 and the LX10. My wife is having a baby and I want to have the perfect compact camera to catch every moment. Price is not the problem, I just want the best. After watching this however, I am thinking now the Mark II. This is so tough. I did like the 4K of the LX10 and shooting without overheating but that stabilization is awful. I like the Mark II but the image quality in pictures I don't think are as good as the Sony. Maybe the Sony is the best if you want the image quality and 1080p recording without worrying about 4K. I think I am dropping the LX10 and now considering Canon vs Sony. What do you think the best would be for capturing family events no matter where you are? Video and Pictures?

Gordon - Love your videos and to help support you and Doug, I've bought you coffee and bought your book? Your discussion about the loss of true f1.4 as you zoom out - makes me think. My concerns are image stabilization (due to a stroke, I am not really steady.) I also have heard rave reviews about the Olympus cameras. If I want the best clarity from the best glass at a reasonable cost AND want great image stabilization, which brand, similar in size to the LX10 and other micro 4/3 could give me that. Lumix has stabilization in the camera and lens - do any others or is there one that just has it in the camera, but is as good as the lumix?
@cameralabs

Thanks for your support Richard! Do you want a fixed lens camera or one with interchangeable lenses, and how important is size? I should say I remain very fond of the LX10 / LX15 even though it's not that new anymore.
@richardmeade9842
@richardmeade9842 6 лет назад
Gordon - I like the size of the lx10, but I would like a better grip - which I can buy. I have a GX85 that I just bought and it is a bit heavy and I would get a better grip for that too. If one the size of the LX10 were available with a fixed fast lens with image stabilization and a good grip and a sharper lens, I might go for it. I like the features of the LX100, but the 4k Photo is totally unlike the gx85 and I’m not sure if the stabilization would preclude my needing 4k photo. I was finally able to get some good shots with the 4k photo of the gx 85, but I don’t want to carry all the lenses around. Upon contemplation, would a 24-70 on a Lumix be long enough for Street Photography and Portraits, or do you think I would really miss being able to get out to 120 or 240mm Don’t expect exact answers, just your thoughts. I guess I’m just not aware of how good image stabilization is on non-Panasonic cameras. Rich
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 6 лет назад
Hi Richard, the IS on smaller cameras rarely matches what is available on bigger ones, the Sony RX100 series is a case in point. SO it depends if it's good enough? In the 1in sensor class, I'd definitely compare the LX10, RX100 series and Canon G7X II, and if you want a long range in a small body, Sony's latest RX100 VI is pretty impressive, although if you want a long range, you'll miss out on the bright aperture. Can't have both in a small package. I think the best IS on a small camera is from Olympus on their Micro Four Thirds bodies, but Panasonic's MFT bodies are catching up.

So I'm confused. I just bought this camera. If I shoot a 4K video I can then go back in the playback mode and grab 8MP photos? I thought you had to be in 4K photo mode that would not produce a usable video for later (like if you want to export it in a watchable manner, like MP4)?
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 лет назад
As I recall, you can export / extract a JPEG from movie footage even if it wasn't recorded in any of the 4K Photo modes. There should be an icon for it at the end of the play / fast forward icons. Check the manual for details.

Anyone owning that camera had a trouble with the sound the camera makes? It sounds like a ventilation from the inside. Only when the lens is out. Some says the noise comes from the stabilisation or autofocus, but it sounds very noisy to be just that? I just got that camera and I've had an hybrid one for years without any sound like that. I might sound dumb but I'd really like to know if it is a normal thing. x

Well, something about play button for review the pictures, in my G7X this is not perfect solution, because it can be pressed in a bag or pocket, and when is that happen, it could easily be also pressed fire button and then lens goes out, but in a pocket or a bag this probably will cause a fail.

I use the lumix lx 7 for my videos and I am very happy. I have it since 4 years and it does a great job. I was working with Canon before but for video, I think Panasonic is now better. I think The new lx10/lx15 is not good as the lx7. For the image stabilisation, the lens (24-90 in lx7), the nd filter (lose in the lx10), and the lx10 crops in video where the lx7 don't. Thanks for this great review

Gordon in Japan this camera is under the name of the Lx9 , oh i think the Qaulity of Jpeg's on the Lx9/10/15 is better than the RX100 MK5, would you agree with that , Going by DP Review comparion or is it just my eyes.

Why do people complain the grip? In fact you seldom use it with one hand only. And you don't carry them holding the grip. I have the rx100m3 and all I can say it is the smallest, slimmest and the most compact than the competition.

Since I have heard that Lumix cameras often have problems with dust, i was looking for the possibilty of a "real cap". With the LX100 you are able to unscrew the front ring to put a cap on. Is his also possible with the LX10?

I've just sold my Sony M3 and I'm looking around to see if a Panasonic would be something for me, but I'm worried about focusing on the Panasonic cameras, how well do they focus? And no, I didn't use the viewfinder very much on the Sony either

@Zuzzanna
@Zuzzanna 4 года назад
@@cameralabs Yes it was the RX100 M# I sold. And I wanted to know how good the focus on the Panasonic LX 10. The LX10 has some great features as well ☺and for me, this camera would be my 2 camera, just to put in a pocket when I'm out and about
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 4 года назад
@@Zuzzanna the AF speed and confidence is similar between the LX10 and the RX100 III, so if you're happy with the RX100 III, then you'd be happy with the LX10 in this regard. if you want more confident AF, you'll need to upgrade to the RX100 V or later, and sadly those are getting quite expensive.

I wouldn't choose the LX-10 over the LX100, the view finder and larger sensor will win every time for me. The manual controls are better too. A used LX-100 is a massively better proposition than the LX-10.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 лет назад
There's pros and cons to both. The LX100's sensor is bigger, but it doesn't use all of it and in my tests the major benefit was uncropped different aspect ratios rather than better low light performance. Having an EVF is great, but I personally don't get on with the 16:9 field sequential panel in the LX100. I do like the grip and the controls make more sense on the LX100 though. In its favour, the LX10 / LX15 is smaller, has a brighter lens at 24mm, has a screen that tilts and is touch-sensitive and also supports the latest 4K Photo modes like Post Focus and Focus Stacking. That said, the LX100's 4K and 4K Photo modes don't crop as much, so you get wider coverage. Lots to weigh up but I wouldn't say one is better than the other overall - it depends which features are most important to you.

Damn Panasonic and their naming conventions, mostly because of the NTSC vs PAL thing? Does it matter, I mean most Panasonic's can be set to either in the hidden service menu...
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 7 лет назад
I think it's supposed to identify models as grey imports into other regions. For example, if you have an LX15, you know it's from the UK.
@RagicalPlays
@RagicalPlays 7 лет назад
Fair enough, but they could've done that by not messing up the model numbers. Panasonic's lineup is a confusing mess because of it. Besides couldn't they have that bit of info in the production number or another spot where all this information about the model is placed. Just sayin' :P
@RagicalPlays
@RagicalPlays 7 лет назад
Also I'm pretty sure the FZ1000 for example, is called that around the globe, while it's successor the FZ2000 is in PAL regions called the FZ2500. Making it sound like an upgrade of the FZ2000, while it is the exact same cam. Like I said, on most Panasonic's you can access the service menu and change the NTSC/PAL setting to get more FPS. Which kinda makes these odd model numbers a bit of a moot point, right :D 25/50/100/200 vs 30/60/120/240

All I need is a basic camera with great sharpness and resolution, a very accurate spot meter, and a terrific sensor: and this is my technique used for 54 years of photographing. I fully realize that this is a review of a camera and that I appreciate.
