I hope you enjoy this tour of my food storage room! What is an item you *always* have on hand in your home? (PS yes, I’m out of breath 😂 that’s what happens when you’re 9 months pregnant).

You should buy an alarm for the freezer. They are cheap and alert you if the temperature changes or the power goes out. 1/2 cow is an investment

Thank you for mentioning that, we had our deep chest freezer go out one time and probably 20-30 pounds of meat went bad. Don’t want that to happen again.

We have one that alerts our phone. It’s saved us a handful of times. We also installed a baby lock. Just in case something shifts and the door doesn’t seal correct.

Facts, I lost 60 1 pound sausage packs, and 40 pounds of ground beef, because my brother unplug one of my freezers! I looked at those freezer alarms, a month and a half ago, but did not get them then! But now I do have them, they work well, mine are set to a max of 32 degrees, you can hear them from anywhere in the house!

100% yes, my brother and his wife spent an entire weekend butchering hogs and got all the meat into the freezer only to find that the seal was broken 2 days later that it had all gone bad. Now everything is alarmed and alerts their phone if the temperature changes

A piece of advice: correct overstock mistakes right away. Donate those beans! Get them to someone who will use them and you’ll have more space to store what you actually need. Same thing for the olive oil and nuts. I know it’s a chunk of money but better to do it now so they don’t just end up spoiled.

I’m in San Antonio, Tx and we eat a lot of breakfast tacos particularly potato egg and refried bean and cheese in a flour tortilla with salsa. They’re great for breakfast or dinner. Refried bean and taco meat chalupas are great too. They go over well at parties are are cheap to make. Just messy to eat.

Growing up on an almond orchard, we had large amounts of nuts too. My mom always kept them in zip locks in the freezer and they stayed good forever. In fact when my parents moved to assisted living 2 years ago, they had a bunch of frozen pecans and walnuts in the freezer. Lord know how old they were, but they still tasted great!
@ke3959
@ke3959 2 года назад
Well, you could add fresh herbs to the olive oil and freeze them. If you store them in ice trays you can pop them out as needed. Or freeze and put into freezer bags to keep fresh. This way you dont have to worry so much about wasting the oil. Its the opening and not storing in a cool, dark and dry place that place that causes it to go rancid quicker.

Idea for some of your beans: I use it to thicken soups (like chili, black bean soup, chicken tortilla, etc). The family never knows but it adds good protein and makes it more filling!

Highly recommend the Berkey!!!! We have one and we love it. It’s easy to clean, the filters last a long time. The water tastes SO GOOD out of it too! Better then bottled water or from the fridge filter. We use significantly less bottled water now. I use Berkey water for everything. My 7yo keeps it full for us but adding pitchers of water to it - showing how easy it is to keep full and fill up.

Loved the pantry tour, great organization. The only thing I would suggest is to not have paper products or cardboard items directly on the floor in case of a random flooding situation of ANY kind. When I was a kid our backyard sloped down on one side and we had a walk out basement. My dad put cement steps from the patio down to the basement door but the drainage was not sufficient and our basement flooded 3 inches of water. A few years ago (as an adult) I had a pipe leak behind a wall in the basement and a large area of ceiling, wall and floor (carpet) got very wet. I have also heard of hot water heaters leaking. Just some cautious thoughts.

Highly recommend the Berkey. We got the biggest size during pandemic for our family of 6, because we used to go fill 5 gallon jugs at the water store and it got tricky. We did the math and it will pay for itself in a year, and I now have one less errand every week. The whole family says the water is better than what we used to buy too. Highly recommend!

You are very prepared and able to take care of your family for a long time, if you had to rely on this only. Okay maybe you will see this. 1. The refried beans you can open put in quart freezer bags and freeze. 2. You can actually recan the beans and give them a longer shelf life. 3. If you have a local shelter, church, etc that makes meals for the needy the extra stuff that you are sure will go bad before you can use, let them have it. 4. Make a dish for like a potluck dinner at your church. 5. Freeze the nuts or donate!! 6. Find a homeless camp and just offer extra to them, it will be so welcomed!

We are looking at building our food storage!!! We are looking at having a full pantry in our next house. In our last house we had a big pantry and loved it!!! We had extra space in it. I love the idea of being able to keep stuff in the bags they come in!!! We don’t use olive oil daily as I’ve made a mistake when cooking high heat with olive oil. We go thru sauces so stocking up on that could be a good idea. Make a label for your food storage!!! Nuts don’t last long, I learnt that as well. We go thru eggs.

A FEW SUGGESTIONS***syrup will last the longest for you and has an indefinite shelf life ive been told. So we stocked up on this. i recommend buying in bulk organic costco flour( sell it at 28thstreet costco) We do it for our family and its such a huge saving. 2 -10lb bags will fill 1 food grade bucket. but you want to buy bucket plastic liners bags for it. We usually buy about 120lbs a flour for our family of 5. We also stock up on their large bags of rice and buy loose dry beans. This has allowed us to not have to keep so many canned beans etc. That might be an option for you as well. We use orgain protein powder. Save your orgain plastic jars when you are done and they work great for refilling with bulk oats, bulk can sugar or bulk brown sugar from costco too. I label mine with those markers for overhead projectors that you can wipe off with water. it works great. This works for bucket labels too! :) great pantry stock up :)

I have canned about 700 or more jars since August. Favorites have been spiced peaches, roast beef, beef stew. Canning a lot of our half beef is one way I'm guarding against power outage. Staples we keep on hand : thick cut oats, dried cranberries, brown sugar, flour , gf grains for me to make flour, pb, oil, pasta, pasta sauce (from our garden), tomato paste, beans , tuna, salmon. Lots more than that too. Powdered whole milk.

We originally bought it because we had well water and it tasted funky but we have city water now and we still use it. It’s an awesome thing in times of trouble or to keep from buying bottled water. We fill our cups from it every day. So, yes, buy one, you won’t be sorry!

This is great! Way to go 👏👏 Having a food stock is important but I'm definitely finding it hard to manage. I'm learning as I go because we don't want to throw out food that expires. I think you can open those beans and put them in Ziploc bags to freeze. So you have smaller portions when you want to eat some. Good luck with the beef liver. We tried it and had to give the rest to my FIL. He loved it! We couldn't choke it down 🙈

We are a family of 6. I was going through cases of bottled water. I invested in a Berky and bought the kids reusable water bottles, and I won’t go back. Sure we keep a few cases when we go on trips just to have on hand. But I feel good about the empty plastic bottles not going back into the environment. So it’s definitely a win win. Win for my pocket book and win for the environment. I enjoyed your tour of storage food. I think this day and age it’s good to have extra on hand especially when you have a bigger family.

I was excited to see this video up as I've been looking forward to it. We buy bulk from Sam's and Costco as a family of 9 but don't really have room to store a lot of extra. I would like to start stocking up for emergencies so this was good to see. I would have liked to hear some about how you keep track of what needs to get eaten up as you bring more on. It's a lot to manage. Side note - Whenever my husband's mom was sick when he was growing up, his dad made spam for dinner.

Just a piece of advice that I just learned myself. When you open those big cans of refried beans put what you don't use right away into meal size freezer bags and freeze them. That way it doesn't go bad and you have several different meals with them. Also I bulk up my ground beef with refried beans and other shredded up vegetables, it adds nutrients to the meal and no one except you know it's in there. It makes the meal more filling and way more nutritious.

You can make beef & bean burritos with some of 1 can. Just recan the rest into smaller jars by either waterbath or pressure canning. Good idea to date each container of everything, so you'll know which to use first. FIFO method. I date everything I bring in from the store before I forget the date, this way I know when I bought it. Many things last a lot longer than those dates on the can or label. Sugar, salt, honey, maple syrup among many others last forever regardless of dates stamped. As for the oil, you can use the expired ones for emergency candles or in an oil lamp. Don't toss anything until you research others ways to use them...just a suggestion.

Definitely use that vacuum sealer, it keeps whatever you properly seal inside fresh for ages in the freezer. I tested it and 12 months later, the salmon honestly was perfect, not an ounce of freezer burn, and nobody who ate it had a clue how long I had it in the freezer. It is worth the price of the bags.

Absolutely love your content sis! We’ve done some of the same things as it relates to stockpiling cans of beans and things that no one else eats 😂 I will say that you could open the can and dehydrate them. You can them repurpose them and make a bean powder mix to add it to rice or make veggie burgers… $1 for 7 lbs was a steal and that was great thinking to purchase it. Sometimes you just have to think outside of the box. If you Mylar bag it with oxygen absorbers then you have a longer shelf life as well.

Right now we are a family of four soon to be five. I would get the big one for your family and or put different kids on burkey duty. We just keep a gallon jug behind ours. If you get a smaller one the. You will just have to fill it more often which really isn’t that big a deal. I would also buy extra filters. We are using the four black and the four white filters. We also have some extra filters.

Just an fyi, you can donate the olive oil, refried beans, fake spam, and other foods your family won’t eat or will expire before your family can use. Homeless shelters and food banks ALWAYS need food especially in these times. Regarding the nuts, if they are in a SEALED container they should last for quite a while until opened. However, if they are in plastic bags, you can either freeze them or seal in canning jars with an oxygen absorber.

You can use the refried beans for a bean dip for potlucks and such. Then freeze the rest. I believe you can dehydrate them too, and then process it in a food processor to add dried refried beans to tacos, chili's, etc. :) Bean dip: 2 1 Lb cans of refried beans 1 pack taco seasoning 2 1 Lb cans of Rotel or salsa 16 oz sour cream 8 oz cheese 1 can black olives. Mix most of the taco seasoning with the beans. Save a little to sprinkle on top. Beans layer first. Then layer Rotel or salsa, sour cream, and cheese. Drain olives, and lay on top of cheese. Then sprinkle remaining taco seasoning. Super delish. Goes great at all the potlucks. :)

Nuts you can put in the freezer and they'll last longer. Same with the Refried beans. You can freeze one cup portions of it. Also if you make freezer meals for anyone else you can make something that requires Refried beans. You might also want to donate some of the olive oil to make sure it doesn't go bad.

PLEASE take your extra beans, olive oil, and nuts to the soup kitchen. Don't let it go bad. You know, if you want to get some of the beans into your kids you could mix a couple table spoons into their ravioli or soup, even burgers and meatloaf would hide a nice amount. Anyway, I am so envious! How I wish I had the space to stock up like that. You are a great homemaker!

I would make a whole bunch of freezer bean enchiladas for postpartum with one can and make some individual freezer burritos. We love refried beans too!! Loved this vlog Tabitha!!

Great job organizing your food! We received a large can of refried beans awhile back. We made a Refried Bean Soup that was delicious. You can make it without adding meat or I added some shredded chicken. If you want to use some of those refried beans in a soup you can freeze the remainder in individual serving size. Just an idea 😉

The best use for those refried beans is by making a 5 layer bean dish for dinner, game night or. Birthday, make in a large (9x13 or bigger?) cake dish or use your aluminum lasagna pans.

You have a good set-up and look to be pretty organized. I'd move the nuts to the freezer, add some spices and continue to rotate through the can goods, keeping 6+ months worth. Your #10 cans aren't a fail, open as needed, freeze the extra portions and replace with smaller cans. Know what you'd do in case of power outage or storm. Have a couple ways to cook, stay warm and keep your family safe. You're doing better than most of my friends.

Great job! I think we all learn as we stockpile what will last and what won't last. I think you have a great start. I do not have a basement to store items in so I am super jealous! We have several items in our pantry at all times, rice, pasta, coffee, several canned items and so much more.

If your oil does go rancid before you can use it up it can be used for lighting, an olive oil lamp is a good use for older oil.

As far as your way extra food stash, I'd take them too a food kitchen, or a church soup kitchen, they could use the refied beans and olive oil, and whatever else that's still sealed that you chose to give them, and it wouldn't go to waste, you could divide between a few different ones, so they didn't feel overwhelmed with them...like you are. Just a thought...also if you go through the dates and some are within a month or so of expiration, and you feel you won't go through them, take them to the food pantry, and they will get used before they expire!!

Blend those beans and secretly get them into soups and stews, chilli, tomato dishes. They will never know, and will probably actually like them. Nuts - make some granola and muesli to use some up, make some oat & nut bars for snacks. Grind some nuts up and get them into other meals, curries etc. No bargains are a mistake, you just need to get creative. Can also shove nuts in the freezer, and portion some of those beans up and freeze those into small portions too.

Berkey's are nice to have but when thinking long term you have to have plenty of replacement filters. I suggest a rainwater catcher outside. We have one. It's amazing. And it doesn't hurt to have life straws and water purification tablets on hand in case a SHTF scenario and you have to bug out.

I saw the bottled water stacked on the mini frig. There’s duct work behind it. Don’t store the water by a heat source. Bottled water has an expiration date. Storing near heat will shorten that.

We love our Berkey. Since we got it and have it easy to get to the kids have increased their water drinking like 300% (they didn’t drink water before) and I’m reminded to drink mine.

You should look into thrive life cansolidator. I believe it can hold up to 300+ cans in a first in first out rotation. Also one tip I’ve heard is to store your paper products on the top shelf. That way if the basement gets flooded, your paper products don’t get ruined.

I take the refried beans and add a little heavy whipping cream, fresh shredded cheese and salt/pepper to taste. I warm it on the stove and we will line a tortilla on taco night then put all our goodies with it. I refrigerate the leftover beans and my family eats it cold as bean dip for a few days. They love it and always eat it up.
