Resident Evil: Revelations 2 is an enjoyable spinoff in a series at a crossroads at the time. Although I prefer the first Revelations.
REV2 is the middle ground between 6, and 7, both figuratively and literally.
Revelations 2 was released at a time when the series was having a bit of an identity crisis. The Revelations series was more to cater to the old-school survival horror fans but also pulled some of the action-heavy elements from the 4-6 era of Resident evil.

For Revelations 2, they did focus a bit more on the action and less on the horror aspects that the prior title. There are some nice adjustments in Revlations 2 - the coop system works well, the story is much simpler to follow, and the focus on the smaller cast of characters is welcome. It's nice to see Claire and Barry back into the fold. Barry really gets his moment in the sun here.
However, some of the tweaks, like the more linear level design, led to more mixed results with Revelations 2. I'd still give the edge to the first Revelations title, but Revelations 2 is still worth your time if you enjoyed the prior title or the series in general.
This Revelations 2 review/analysis/critique/retrospective takes a look at the gameplay tweaks, the plot, the raid mode, and more.

Barry alone puts Revelations 2 in my top 5 Resident Evil games. Just the fact they were able to take his memetic lines from the original game and make them badass one liners is just the cherry on top of everything.

Barry (and also Moira) carried this game (which is crazy, I thought Claire - one of my favorites - would steal the show, but for once, she actually didn't). It was just total fun actually getting to play as one of the OGs not named Chris, and this game surprisingly has some touching moments with his story as a dad. You get a lot more personality out of him this time, including his iconic quips, and it's so good. It just makes me want Capcom to give the other OGs their own games, instead of Chris all the time. My girl Jill especially needs some action. Like, STAT - she hasn't had anything since the first Revelations, and it's been ten years since that came out.
@DinoDave150

I agree with everything you said in regards to the Burtons carrying this game. In regards to Jill, I would also like to know what she's been up to after the events of 5. In fact, I'm actually surprised she wasn't a member of the Hound-Wolf Squad in Village.

Most underrated RE game. Let's not forget revelations kept the series afloat before 7 came and saved the franchise. Barry was an amazing character to play and honestly makes me wish we got more old characters returning to play instead of more bland protagonists now. It's not my favorite but it is easily a top 5 re game. Also that ending needs to be continued.

I remember the marketing campaign for Rev 2. Where Claire was presented the most. Then for me to find out Rev 2 was technically Barry's game. Which I was pleasantly surprised. Barry did come off as a Japanese Liam Neeson. He is a good combination of modern games of the time of cheesy dialogue and fun atmosphere. I remember the note of the woman with a missing husband then for the note to end on cannibalism. It genuinely unsettled me after reading that note. I got the game for Raid mode as I like to obsessively work toward 100% completion of skills and weapon builds. HUNK was the main reason I got the game in the first place. He's been my favorite since I played RE4 Mercs and Mercs 3D. I got bored of Borderlands 2 at the time. (Now I can barely stomach the writing anymore).

Rev 2 was actually one of my favorites from the whole series! The episodic nature was nice and different and helps break up the pace. I loved the character moments, especially for Barry and Moira. I think mechanically, it's one of the best played games, too! I loved the robust dodge mechanic, and the skill tree was a welcomed addition IMO. Having a dedicated melee button is very nice for quick jabs and finishers. This all fit perfectly together for the kinds of enemies you deal with in this game! Overall it was an 8, maybe a 9? out of 10 for me

This is a great coop game to play with someone who doesn't really do video games. I wish more games has these kind of asymmetric coop. Also, a grown up Natalia would be an interesting Mercenaries character to play as. Weak attacks but fast dodging and can see through walls, build enough combo/points to unleash an ultra powerful Wesker mode for 30 seconds. Enemies would have randomized weak points for her to exploit or for coop partner to do so. An unlockable costume/load out can be a construction worker that uses bricks and mortar as weapons.

I've spent an inordinate amount of time playing this game! I loved the story and especially Raid mode. The grinding for items and levelling up of all your characters, unlocking costumes is sweet. The dynamics of the two pairs of characters is endearing to me. The episodic style worked here in my opinion, It gives you an automatic cut-off from the game. When my PS4 got bricked I got sad because it means I won't be able to play this game ever again. Now I can only watch with nostalgia when reviews like this gets uploaded.

Also prefer the dialogues, writing, and voice acting in Rev2 superior...Rev1 would be higher but Chris is soooo boring in that lol

Just buy the damn game. It's low budget, but it's great if you're and old timer. Gameplay is smoother than 5 but you won't be dodging bullets, triple back flipping and web swinging like in 6. It's a more grounded game which i believe had some roots for RE7. Having an agressive and passive character dynamic was great. Though there's no online co-op, i can hardly see people match making so a stranger could be spotting itens and blinding monsters for 2 hours. Also the raid mode is great, i've spent more time in it that i want to admit it. Being a spin-off low budget RE, you can find it really cheap nowadays in a Steam sale, if you see it buy it without thinking twice.

I'll never understand the criticism of video game characters swearing, real dialogue with real people is full of swearing. Everyone I talk to regardless of age or position in life swears all the time. The only example I can think of for people not swearing is youtube creators trying to protect their videos from demonetization, but let me assure EVERYBODY else swears in real life. Having characters go though crazy events that could kill them and having them not swear is incredibly unrealistic and jarring.

Depends on the person. Not everyone swears, much less the same way, even under circumstances of extreme stress. Also despite being someone who is comfortable with swearing, having to hear *a lot* of it, especially over short bursts of time, can understandably be off-putting or at best annoying, especially if you're trying to make the character saying it more (universally) likeable.

@@kimbercustompro1911 Your condescension is noted despite me not being among those people; at worst I just find people who curse a lot annoying, mentally write them off as idiots, and tune them out. So all I was commenting on was why I can see some people not caring to hear cursing, before being made uncomfortable even enters into it, even if the vast majority of people cursing is "realistic". "Realistic" things usually get dropped to broaden pieces of media to audiences anyway. It almost seems condescending to say that given how utterly commonplace it is, for better or for worse. So this just seems a weird hill to die on in the same game--hell, series--that has zombies in the first place and other fantastical bio weapons while also having people who don't ever eat or have to take a shit or get tired, but if some people not cursing even in these circumstances is what bothers you as lacking in vital realism, then okay I guess.

@@MusicoftheDamned You can pass people who swear off as idiots all you want. At the end of the day you're the individual who feels uncomfortable hearing a certain collection of vowels and consonants used together to form a sound. The vast majority of video game and film dialog is extremely unrealistic, and goes seemingly out of its way to not be vulgar or objectionable. I believe what you're actually experiencing is some kind of existential crisis of self in that you obviously wish society spoke in a manner that's represented in film and television, but for most real people that's not how they talk to one another. The great voices of our time and before have proven this again again where in the most foul mouthed representatives of our society are also hailed as being the great truth speakers and story tellers. ie George Carlin, Bill Hicks, Penn Jillette, etc. Even Jordan Peterson Swears on occasion if you get him worked up about something he deeply cares about. To many of us swearing is a sign of being "switched on" it's kind of like how people dislike anger without realizing that it was the catalyst to many of the positive changes that shaped society for the better.

I'll never understand how this game has more action than Rev 1. Rev 1 had all the Chris, Parker, and Keith sections, as well as Jill's 2nd half. Rev 2 has more puzzles, inventory management, key items, and scarier enemies with Revenants and Glasps.
@innoclarke7435
@innoclarke7435 Год назад
Yeah, not sure what he was talking about with that one. RE1 absolutely has more action, by far. That game has basically no puzzles aside from the little touch screen one that takes a few seconds to do, there's no real stealth in it, there's a ton of situations where they want to put time pressure on you, the plot itself after not very long starts to gain a sense of urgency, etc. Point being, there's not much to *do* in Revelations 1 except... kill enemies on your way to your objective, where you'll kill more enemies. The only real breaks you get from that are some brief bits of exploration around the small ship, with most areas being locked off to you until they become available to you piecemeal (and you've probably forgotten about the optional areas in question), and the swimming sections which are, uh, not fun in the slightest. On the contrary, I'd argue Revelations 2 is the slowest paced game in that whole second generation of Resident Evil games (RE4 through Revelations 2) with, by far, the strongest horror elements.
@Potatopecker
@Potatopecker Год назад
@@innoclarke7435 Revelations 2 also has a much better story on top of all that, with far more connections to past entries and great character development. And while the game is linear, each individual area has far more of an emphasis on exploration and puzzles. Kinda like the 2nd half of RE3. Revelations 2 also has an atmosphere reminiscent of the GameCube entries and the best Zapping system in the series! I can't praise this game enough man!
@innoclarke7435
@innoclarke7435 Год назад
@@Potatopecker Agreed on all points. I just played through both Rev games. I thought I'd like Rev 1, but I kinda hate its campaign. Rev 2, however, I ended up adoring. Where Rev 1's story felt disconnected and shittily written, Rev 2 ties in with a bunch of games effortlessly and has a story worth a damn, without also having characters like 1's Quint Cetchan and Keith Lumley. We got a villain actually of note. The Kafka fixation felt far better utilized than 1's obsession with the Divine Comedy. In terms of the level design, I felt like I was exploring a lot more. The levels may not loop as much as Boulder Punch would like, but it is far superior in getting you to actually engage with the world. 1's environments are, at times, quite nice artistically, but a lot of it is bland and the atmosphere drops out as a consequence, which is something Revelations 2 almost never has happen. The zapping system is also really clever, managing to combine both RE2's style of "some decisions will have an impact later when you play as another character" and Zero's "swap between characters at will" system to great effect. It feels like they learned every important lesson that they needed to learn from Zero's implementation, too, making it mostly painless, while keeping the interesting opportunities such a system allows for. It's wild to me how little Rev 2 is acknowledged, and when it is, it's shrugged off. People said after 6, the series needed to slow down again, bring back the tension, and smaller scale storytelling. Rev 2 does this all exactly, and yet nobody cared. Meanwhile, 7 is a far worse game with less replay value, tension, less clever design, atrocious enemy variety, and the quality is vastly inconsistent, all while failing to feel like a Resident game at all. It's a PT and Outlast ripoff with some Resident Evil design elements spruced within. Objectively a worse game from top to bottom, but it gets all this credit it doesn't deserve for scaling back the series after 6. Pisses me off tbqh.
@Potatopecker
@Potatopecker Год назад
@@innoclarke7435 Revelations 2 also has some of the best files in the series. They're really eerie and develop the world in a way that is on par with RE2. And the other thing is Revelations 2 has the same director as RE5, RE2R, RE3R, and RE4R. Yasuhiro Ampo and Kazunori Kadoi as lead game designer. These dudes KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING!! I still love 7 and 8, but it's insane to me how these dudes keep being relegated to the Remakes and not mainline. I seriously think if RE9 has the Remake team on it, it could be the best RE to date. All of Ampo's games have a HUGE focus on story, lore, and characters. As well as a general classic metroidvania and monster design. And most importantly...THEY'RE FUN!! If RE9 isn't a Metroidvania action blend with classic characters and connections to past games and lore, then imma riot lol.

At release Revelations 2 was the worst. Episodes where so overpriced that my buddy and i just stuck with episode one. A year later when they sold the episodes for a few bucks in a bundle we bought it....and damn was it a blast. Raid Mode is really nice just like Revelations 1 but the best thing was Story in Coop. If you have someone whos okay with being a more Passive Player...its really REALLY fun. Working together to take enemies down. Find the weakspots and screaming to the other player "more to the left no the other left!" Its just great. And if youre not having someone who likes playing passive... You can either just Switch between Player 1 and Player 2 so that both can have a turn shooting stuff. Or you can Unlock a Infinite Use Katana for Moira and a Bubble Gun (which stuns Enemies) for Natalia. But if you use them...the Story Missions become a utter Joke so i would recommend those items for a Second Playthrough. (They also have crazy unlock requirements.But on Pc you can download an Unlock all Save or Cheat Table lol)
