Would love to see you tackle a vid on PS2's _Operation Winback_ - defo Resi type vibes with the graphical style and the story, character design & voice overs Hands down one of the best gaming channels on the platform, bro ❤🍻🇬🇧
Lol, seems like you did miss it. He happens to be trap in there with the lugers you need to do unlock the special door leading to the mansion. Yeah definitely your problem now😏
I can't, the ''I Deeespise Chris'' line paired with the knowledge that Chris just fuckin' laughed his ass at Wesker in RE1 and that's the reason for that hate is just too funny, it kills me everytime, all of this because Chris laughed at his science project.
I was ready to give Steve the benefit of the doubt. He can't be that bad, can he? Then I heard how he says "sorry" and realized that he's the one thing I could never forgive. Canadian 😤
The backtracking in this game is some of the worst going from one entire area to another for a long distance was awful. Every Re game has backtracking but this felt the worst. Though I wouldnt mind seeing a remake maybe by studio M2 who did RE3 remake so capcom can continue working on more mainline projects
They did Rodrigo dirty. He's probably the coolest character in the entire game despite only having like 4 lines and 5 minutes of screen time, but they get him gut shot and devoured by a giant worm. They should've axed Steve and his whole thing, replaced him with Rodrigo and done a similar thing that they had with Jill and Carlos, where Claire has to work with someone who works for Umbrella. Or, like the video says, they could've replaced Steve with Leon.
With the Ashfords the psychology of Alfred is compounded by the fact that their family is a matriarchal cult of personality, where they venerate a long dead female relative as the exemplar to follow. Alexia was the product of an attempt to recreate Veronica, and Alfred was an undesired by-product. The placenta of his sister's birth. The fact that after losing her he started to obsessively fantasise that he WAS her, and thus he wasn't the inferior mockery of his sister's perfection, is the core of Alfred's tragedy as a character. Naturally this is Resident Evil so this rich concept is handled with classic inelegance, but its all part of what makes RE:CV an interesting digression from the main series.
i couldnt enjoy this game. ppl say re4 is where the series started going crazy but it was actually this game that did and its probably my least fav re game. this game desperately needs a remake
The story is absolute bonkers in CV. And Steve Burnside is probably the worst male character of the franchise besides that wood plank from RE Survivor.
I really enjoy the story in CV actually. Facing off against sociopathic, genius, blonde (and potentially incestuous) twins was cheesy and fun in the best way. The Ashfords were one of the founding families of Umbrella and the twins are the result of genetic engineering so of course they'd be absolutely bonkers.
With the exception of the first game (and its remake) this franchise was always action oriented...you just were 8 years old when the old games came out.
Excuse me?! No memorable music? Code Veronica has some of my favorite boss themes! The tyrant fight in the plane and the final fight with Alexa stick out as some of my favorite boss music ever.
My biggest problem with Code: Veronica aside from Steve Burnside being an obnoxious twit is that it takes the classic RE formula and cranks it up to ludicrous degrees. Backtracking has always been a staple of this series, but it was balanced out by making actual progress. Here, you're *constantly* going back and forth between areas to solve one single puzzle solution (looking at you metal detector) and the pacing just suffers because of it. Not to mention with how big the areas are it's easy to get lost in this game. It's the same problem I have with the original Dino Crisis.
While I LOVE this game, the one part that annoys me besides Steve is the first act for Chris. You go through the fort dealing with extremely dangerous enemies, just to obtain one item a halbred key! Overall it's still an awesome addition to the series, even if it pushed the series into the over the top beautiful mess it is today!
This game is endearing for its super campy, so bad it’s entertaining quality. It literally feels like a soap opera sometimes. But my god it’s easily the most frustrating RE game, some of the mechanics as far as switching between Claire and Chris and THE STEVE MONSTER PART. It’s right before the end of the game and if you leave most of your healing items with the other character (because how would you know they are switching on a first run) you basically have to restart the game if you don’t have a recent save file. Some of the developmental decisions just did not come together and although I loved fixed camera RE I’m so glad the series shifted after this and Zero
Both CV and RE0 really need proper remakes. Not RE4, it's still great. Well, not the censored VR one. CV and RE0 are my least favorite mainline RE games, besides Survivor lol.
I think RE:VC is regarded as one of the best next to RE4 and REmake ny most fans. i was suprised that RECV was rated as one of the worst right at the beginning of this video.
@@Germaniac77 thats probably nostalgia talking, in fairness. No way is it better than the original trilogy, seven and eight. Just too many bad gameplay and writing decisions.
@@niallreid7664 I understand if some people rank Re1+2 in a higher spot for their impact and starting the franchise, but in no way is RE3 (which came around the same time as RECV) near the same level as RECV. RE3 is one of the worst mainline RE-titles. RECV also surpasses RE1 and 2 in terms of storyteling and overall presenattion, but as I said: I can understand if some people rank 1+2 higher for nostalgic reasons
@@Germaniac77 no this game is definitely a dumpster fire, the characters went from normal ppl trying to survive a tense situation to matrix characters with laughable voices and terrible dialogue. I can understand why gen z might love this game tho 😂
Code Veronica was far from a perfect game, but I liked it. Steve is weird and easy to pick on too, but u have to admit, he's way different than any other RE hero. Plus the dual wield gold lugers and sub machine guns were awesome.
In the beginning of Resident Evil 2, Claire was just a civilian without previous combat experience and wasn't even trained like her brother and Jill. She turns into a badass during her brief stay in Raccoon City, manages to escape alive; and a few months later she was able to run from machine gun fire without being hit, and soon afterwards explodes a pile of fuel barrels to kill a bunch of mercenaries in the same room she was. And the shockwave doesn't even make a scratch! Damn, no bootcamp makes an unstoppable killing machine so fast as Racoon City.
Code Veronica is with out a doubt my favorite in the franchise. I'll admit that there is likely quite a bit of distortion from my nostalgia goggles, but I enjoyed this title the most out of them all. I already played 1, 2 and 3 before Code veronica so that didn't affect my perception. I don't generally compare any of those titles to 4 and beyond as they are really different styles so can't really be compared 1:1. 4 would be the best of the revamped styles.
Pretty much the RE that jumped the shark. Not a bad game, but there's good reasons why sales declined and Shinji Mikami drastically changed the formula with RE4. Code Veronica desperately needs a proper remake, not RE4. Definitely not RE4...
@@NebLleb I guess if you’re one of those ppl with zero life experience and think clowns and boo ghosts are scary then yes it’s s very dark and scawwy 😂
Man this game has a special place in my heart. It was the first RE I owned and beat proper Otherwise I only rented the originals or played at a friend's house. And I was still pretty young and scared by them This one really sparked my love for the series. Had X on PS2. Later bought the originals and played the hell out of them and then a GameCube for the remake. Every mainline game I've played since Buuuuuuut... I think Code Veronica has aged like shit. Revisiting it I can see how bland and uninspired in design most environments are. How decidedly not scary it is. And how terrible the story/characters/voice acting is. This really is where the game changed from a B movie horror conspiracy story To a bad anime
I played Darkside Chronicles before I played CV. I feel Darkside did Steve's character much better. He actually feels like a person and not a parody. He's much more likeable.
Sam Reigal did the voice acting for Steve and he’s waaaay better. He’s a very competent voice actor who does A LOT of things and you’ve definitely heard him in plenty of places.
Code: Veronica is the Resident Evil game that I feel to be most in need of a remake (alongside Survivor). Steve could be a really compelling character with better voice acting and scripting. There were a lot of really creative ideas in the game's design that could be reworked into a modern AAA gaming experience-for instance, exploring Rockfort Island as Chris _after_ its self-destruct mechanism had already gone off. The only problem is that CV's design is severely antiquated and tedious by today's standards. A remake would fix this issue.
CV would literally never get a remake in 2021, or at least not a faithful one. It's too """problematic""" and they'd just turn it into a soulless bottom of the barrel trash like RE3R.
I still love and think it's one of the best in the series that deserves a remake. RE2 on N64 was my first RE game and might still be my favorite of the series. Thematically and story-wise RE:CV is one of my favorites.
Can’t say that I have an issue other than some details with this game since it belongs into my top 3 RE games. Yes, story wise is bananas, but I love it even though is weird af 😂 and the soundtrack is sooo good
Even though RE3 actually improved and innovated on the gameplay seen in the first two games, whereas Code Veronica is incredibly bog standard while also doubling down on the backtracking and other faults.
Lost a sub. CV got amazing reviews when it came out on the dc and sold over a million copies on the dc alone. You also lost what little cred u had when u claimed the music was nothing special.
I think most ppl are use to cvx and weren't there for the original dc version aside that it's really a tale of two times the impact that cv had is lost to the newer generations
I actually played this game blind about 2 months ago, I bought on my PS4 because it was on sale and I never really played any of the “old” resident evil games besides the Resident evil remaster and 2 remaster. Gotta say while it frustrated the hell outta me with the instakill Hunters, boss battles and poison enemies, I enjoyed it. It’s not the best Resident Evil but also not the worst, I enjoyed it for what it was. I’m basically just agreeing with the video but yeah, that’s my take.
They removed the "ballistics" and "overtime" lines from RE4 VR. If a CV remake would release and keep the "crossdressing freak" line, journalists and blue checkmarks would totally lose their shit and have a colossal meltdown.
not the ballistics, that one is amazing and witty but "you cross dressing freak" feels more mean spirited than funny, I'd like it more if it was something like "still hiding behind a screen huh? and btw I thought you'd were more makeup"
@@yaboyalijah352 If course it's mean spirited. He's an insane cruel cross-dressing freak that tries to kill you and has overseen multiple inhumane experiments. I don't care what people who are soft in the head say
I love Code: Veronica and it wasn't my first RE game (as for most old fans, it was my 4th). The story has some issues but the atmosphere is unique - it is also the first RE game where characters are actually fleshed out a bit more. And the soundtrack is amazing, just like RE2's. RE0, on the other hand, is downright terrible. 1:54 Flagship didn't handle actual game development. It was a company created by Noboru Sugimura and Yoshiki Okamoto after RE2 to provide scripts to the game industry (mainly Capcom). As such, they were only in charge of the story. Development was mostly handled by Nextech, which was a third-party developer: SEGA did send some of its own people during the later phases to help out. The game director was Hiroki Kato, another Shinji Mikami's protege, who did work on RE1 and RE2 and was still a Capcom employee at that time.
I don't get all the hate for Steve. Sure, he speaks in ALL CAPS. But he's a kid who has had everyone and everything taken away from him. He's been traumatized. He acts selfish, but he eventually dedicates himself to protecting Claire. And in the end, sacrifices himself to save her. That's a right proper arc. "YAHOO"
Yeah, I just think it's a shame to discount him for his voice because he had some real growth. But that's coming from someone who has an annoying Canadian voice too haha
I couldn't stand Code: Veronica. It was a mess. But oddly enough, it's the one Resident Evil game I'd most like to see remade, because it's the one RE game which would benefit the most from a remake.
Code Veronica desperately needs a proper remake. There's a lot of potential in this game but the execution is so silly that it goes straight to hell. Especially with the way Steve works.
The most regretful thing with the game is the censorship: Ashord were nazis (that's why you see German symbols everywhere), serious atmosphere, bye bye headshot. The major issue is Capcom didn't fully develop the game. And the worst thing: Steve... That guy is so stupid. I like Code Veronica. But yeah... it gets silly.
Too many opportunities for soft locks and way too much backtracking(even for RE) IMO. Not to mention the cheesy story. The graphics were amazing at the time though.
Fuck off. The journalists would be right to have a problem. Nothing freakish about crossdressing and you can shove your helicopter identification up your asses.
Fudge the level design in CV... its the only RE game where I wouldn't know where to go and have to check every room across the whole map until something happened...overall its an alright game but the map itself I found frustrating...also I got up to the final boss without enough life and ammo so I didn't even get to finish the game...This has been my TED TALK
People always defend Steve saying “he was only 17!” And while that is valid, Sherry was only 12 in RE2 and her situation was arguably worse than Steves and look at how much she whined and cried throughout that game? Also his voice acting is by far some of the worst I’ve ever heard. He also just didn’t bring that much to the story imo, you could probably cut him from the game and not much would be lost. And don’t get me started on him trying to kiss Claire while she’s unconscious. I don’t understand how some people love Steve.
Another great video as always, love your RE content. Plus, that DSP section, is my favorite of yours so far. Nothings as salty as his RE0 playthrough though. Big ups!
I couldn't disagree more. CODE VERONICA is one of my absolute favourite Resident Evil titles, alongside RE2, and I have been playing RE games since RE1. And I may be in the minority here, but I actually liked Steve lol. I cried when he died, but perhaps that had something to do with me being a young teen when I first played it 😆
Old comment but I heavily agree with you. I never found Steve as annoying as others say, even found his death a bit sad. Replayed it recently to refresh my memory after RE4Make and, despite a few issues with bosses and certain enemies, I still loved it as much as I did when I played it for the first time 3 years ago. Still holds up exponentially well and I'll both defend it tooth and nail, and shout at the sky to Capcom for a faithful remake like RE4 got.
He's just suuuuuuuuuuuuuuch a cornball. I can't sympathize with cornballs. They hit that cringe/disgust nerve & any hope of sympathy is burnt to the ground.
I just recently played through all the classic RE games. I have only played 1 Remake and 0 back in the day..... well, and of course RE4 and the later modern RE games. ...and I was really surprised by Code Veronica. It felt like the series moved further away from interconnective levels and puzzle in favor of more and faster action with each installment. Nemesis could've been a hallway shooter for all intents and purposes.... and here comes Code Veronica, that opens with Clair dodging machinegun fire from a helicopter, has a slow motion drop to catch her gun and kills a room full of soldiers..... but this game is closer to the original than any other game in the series. While I found some parts borderline unfair (item exchange for example) I guess I'd rank it second after REmake 1..... not sure if I like it more than RE2 or just equally
I love Steve as a character, but they need to change the storyline and get him a new voice actor! Claire did really like Steve and Steve had a thing for Claire so I want to see their relationship grow if there is a remake for CV!
I honestly would just love a reboot of the series take alot of the lore we have and just reboot the game as if we never met knew anything.i find it so wierd that they remade re 2 and 3 but not 1?that could of been the full reboot I wanted but instead we have 2 and 3 remakes without 1.i have no clue if remake 1 is cannon with remake 2 and 3....this series is just a mess
Code Veronica really should get a remake it was good enough to deserve one and quite probably the one that would benefit the most story wise .. plus it sets up wesker far better as a global threat better then the small cameo in 4 has ahead of an inevitable 5 remake
My girlfriend is a very huge Resident Evil fan, but I only played seven and eight and she was not okay with that, so this past month we have been going through all the main Resident Evil games from 1 to 6. Honestly my journey with this Series and her has been so fun and I feel like I was definitely missing out a lot. Apparently codename Veronica is her favourite one that she played as a kid. Definitely hoping to play this one one day when I get a GameCube I guess. Thank you for doing a review of these older games and making me understand what it was like for her playing them Boulder punch! (:
She's a keeper. Also for Veronica you don't need a GameCube, at least not only. You can get a Dreamcast (why tho) or a PlayStation 2. I believe PS2 version has the most content, but I might be wrong Upd. : just remembered you can get Veronica for PlayStation 3 and 4, as well as for Xbox 360 (though not for Xbox One for some reason)
I cant stress enough how much i want a remake of code veronica. Mostly cuz i cant beat the original code veronica X. I would like get a chance to beat the remake atleast😂
I'm a new subscriber I absolutely love these survival horror reviews your commentary is dead on and also hilarious keep up the good work I'm off to binge-watch the rest of your videos now lol
seeing the scene where the twins are ripping the wings off the dragonfly while it was still alive as a child permanently scarred me, i still have nightmares about it sometimes
Honestly I think this game is best played in a group environment. RE:cv-X has this "such low quality that it's entertaining" charm. I found myself getting to the point of enjoying all the little nuances it had to offer and from a "meme" standpoint I'd say this game is of the highest tier for ps2 era. There's so much here to genuinely laugh at and enjoy. Although I imagine the devs didn't intend this, it's still much better than being so bland it ends up being thrown away and forgotten. I genuinely enjoyed this as both a challenging (albeit cheap on occasion) RE game as well as a funny and very memorable watching experience. That said if you approach this game seriously, you're in for a bad time.
You really had to just be there because I've watched a few of these retrospective videos and they are all coming from a place of people who were either born after or were too young to enjoy the game when it was released. From early on a lot of people saw this as the true RE3, and this was the biggest triple-A title with some of the best graphics by the time it came out on Dreamcast, whereas PS2 in the beginning really had little to nothing based in reality to show that was worth a shit. Actually, one of PS2's biggest titles at the time was Code: Veronica X because there was really mostly crap out on the system when it launched. I think Onimusha may have been the only other one worthwhile out at the time unless you bought Zone of the Enders for the MGS2 demo disc. But yeah C:V was like a stepping stone in a lot of ways to what the game would become in RE: Remake and ultimately RE4, if not for they at least got to see how the game was in a truly 3D environment. Honestly, I hope this is the next remake they are working on. Also the cheesiness is what makes every RE great! They just all seem to do it in different ways. I think a lot of the ham in this was because how new the graphics tech was (maybe even some of the sound tech?) and they wanted them to be over-expressive and more like an anime. I'd imagine a lot of the voices were done by anime actors anyway.
Code veronica is comfortably one of the worst RE titles. Horrible level design and some utterly ridiculous puzzles. Plot isnt cohesive enough either. Theres a boss fight in which if you havent gathered enough ammo you literally hit a brick wall and have to start over. 3/10 for me.
Im not ashamed to admit im one of the people who put all their items away before fighting Alexia the first time, im proud to announce i managed to kill Alexia knife only after some 30 odd attempts
.....Boulder did you literally say "Warmer section" when refering to "Antarctica?!" With that Blizzard, that ain't no Warm area, they should have been Claire/Steve Cicles, Especially Steve as he's more lightly dressed then Claire!
Code Veronica is probably my 2nd least favorite game in the series, only ahead of RE6. I played it for the first time a few years ago and I remember that the story and level/boss design really left a bad taste in my mouth. For RE0, as flawed as it is, at least the music and graphics/environment are among the best in the series which redeem it a lot for me
Interesting how no one calls RE8 "silly" when the game is about you putting your chopped up and crystallised daughter back together and her somehow coming back to life after that and having magical powers to boot. Not to mention you fight werewolves. And a shapeshifting villain who instead of just murdering Ethan and Mia and taking Roze decides for some reason that it would be better to mimic Mia and play pretend housewife for reasons. But yeah, let's call other RE games "silly".
I never truly enjoyed Code: Veronica. I played it back in the day and never got to Chris entering the story. More recently I made it to Antarctica and immediately gave up. It's a frustrating game full of annoying characters and gameplay mechanics I didn't enjoy. It's very much a forerunner of Zero and I have much the same feeling.
Finally, someone else says that RE CV was when it got stupid. People keep saying that RE was always stupid, but if you accept the evil corporation and ludicrously designed mansions, the way the story unfolds in the first 3 games was pretty grounded. They were not deep, but they were believable in what they were going for: decent B-movie plot. The focus was on the characters' attempts at surviving, conspiracies were secondary. Even the villains had grounded motives: Wesker wanted money, Birkin wanted to be recognized for his research (it's a travesty what they did to his character in Zero), Nikolai, again, wanted money. It was believable. In CV we got stupid villains spouting nonsensical bullshit about world domination, and all of it lasted until RE7.
Oh man, Steve's voice and character is just... yikes. How embarrassing it must be to be him. XD 10:55 lmao gg Steve, with the spread on machine-pistols you just blasted your dad *and* Claire into ground beef. What a sore-ee excuse for a male lead.
If they remake this game in the same style as re4 Remove a bit of the cheese focus the story Like ashford losing his mind over not knowing he was his own sister vould be an AMAZING scene Steve dealing with his father A lot of a great ideas with godawfull execution And not a joke like in this game
You really under-sold the God-Hand... aka the knife from Code Veronica. There has never been a better knife than this one. Its as if the knife was a secret chainsaw. You slash an enemy on the ground and it hits like 5 times per swipe.
Steve's voice was so damn annoying 😂, i could not stand everytime he said "sworeee about that" lol. Cringe, only character i didn't like playing back in the day
Thank you foe the video ! Your commentary is spot on. I discovered the series late with RE4 and, progressively, went back in time to experience the earlier installments that created the foundations. RE1 was a nice retrogaming experience, RE2 was a blast, RE3 was beginning to get even more action-focused and pushing it with the puzzles gimmicks, but those are titles I could come back to- not Code Veronica. RE have always been silly and this is part of its charm (even though I am bemused to see some fervently defending the games' numerous plotholes) but Code Veronica goes off the chart regarding the backtracking and fetchquests (one of the worst offending moments is all you need to do in order to get a secret ladder to appear). Too tedious and frustrating to often and indeed, a REmake for this one is quite unlikely. But I do not think we would be missing out...
@@DinoDave150 8 is as much of an action game as 6 was. I agree that it's a fun game to play but it's not resident evil and I shudder to think where the series goes from here.
Code Veronica is one of the BEST in the series kinda like one of those BESTFRIENDS you had in school that help you get far in school to progress in the future.
I love Code Veronica. Along with REmake, it’s my favorite of the classic era, and had things gone differently it would’ve been a good game to end the main series with.
