So the "Berserker mushroom" that guy ate is called Amanita muscaria (fly agaric) its a mushroom that puts you in a psychoactive state when consumed. Vikings would eat it before a battle to increase adrenaline which in turn allows them to fight more aggressively, hit with more force as well as dull pain. of course the effects shown in the anime are little exaggerated.

3:38 those are btw a real thing. Viking warriors named Berserkers (roughly meaning Bear-Shirt) used drugs to go into a violent, ferocious trance. They fought while high as balls and because of that had very little regard for their own safety, letting them go insane in battle. A lot of old art depict them biting their shields, since that was a common description for them in lots of tales and legends

I love the Thor vs. Askeladd fight, it shows just how OP they both are compared to everyone else. Though Askeladd lost, the fact he was able to hold his own, along with other fights, demonstrates his skills

Imagine Allen fucking up the timing and getting crushed by the beam right out of the gate, most anticlimactic fight ever.

Thors would've made all the same choices even if Thorfinn wasn't there. It was an inescapable situation and he wasn't going to get all the other village boys killed.

All the "j"s in this anime are pronounced as "y". So it's not Jomsvikings it's Yomsvikings and Byorn not Bee-jorn. The antagonists name is written as Askeladd as in "Ask-eh-lad" but in Japanese it is pronounced Ashe-eh-lad. Both are correct and depends on preference.

i love the philosophy of this show, maybe i'm bias because one of my core value is "no one deserves to be hurt" but the whole ideology of letting wrongs go (no one having enemies) and respecting everyone's life (a true warrior dosen't need a sword) is such a impressive if naive/idealistic mind set and something i try to strive for in my ever day life, love this anime LOL

So while the mushroom thing has some historical references. It wasn't the only way that a Viking would go into the so called berserker rage. There are several references from people they raided describing them. It would say how during battle the more you hit a Viking the more savage and powerful they got. Seeing a man the size of a small bear charge at you with zero fear of death had a terrifying powerful psychological impact on their foes. Vikings had no fear of death as their entire culture was based around fighting and battle. They wanted to die in battle. If you died any other way than they wouldn't get to Valhalla. All of the main gods they worshipped had something to do war. Sometimes just seeing their distinct round shields would be enough to make any unprepared enemy flee in fear. That's the reputation the Vikings developed.

i still dont understand how throfinn was able to hide that second time. i just dont see how leif and the others would let thor's son out of all people out of their sight after what happened. that felt a bit lazy but maybe thats just me

Thorfinn is truly to blame for his father's death. As the show made it clear that Thor was most worried for Him, Yes he wouldn't have want the rest to die, But I do think there would have been an different story if Thorfinn hadn't sneaked on the ship and be such an brat.. seriously.. He might be an kid, but his selfish action got his dad killed, and instead of blaming himself for it, he blame Askladd for his fathers death.. like I said in past, Thorfinn is not an good main character.

Hey I haven’t actually watched this video yet but I wanna comment quickly in hopes you’ll see it. I think your using the Netflix subtitles for this show and those subtitles are wrong. They completely change some lines and give them the opposite meaning from what’s actually being said. You should switch to the Amazon prime subtitles if at all possible because this show lives and dies on its dialogue so wrong translations like Netflix can really hurt the experience
