The thing that an anime about vikings from a japanese man is more historically accurate than any western show is one of the funniest things mankind ever produced

I love that this anime is historical fiction, a lot of the characters are based off real world people/folklore during the Viking period and it’s awesome (obviously looking up some of the historically figures will “spoil you” on some of the story just a heads up)

Vinland IS in-fact Canada. New Brunswick and Newfoundland to be specific. Leif Erikson is the historical first European explorer to arrive in North America, though from what I'm reading his expedition in particular never ran into any First Nations.
@P99s-s
@P99s-s Год назад
It’s really hard to say what the relationship between Leif Erkisons expedition and the Natives was or if they even had any contact. We only have the two Vinland Sagas (hehe) to go of off and they don’t mention any contact with natives on the first discovery, only on the subsequent trips which Leif wasn’t a part of anymore. Other than that we have some archeological evidence of the Viking presence in Newfoundland, but non that can be traced to Leif’s Expedition, again, only later ones.

@@dracocrusher i mean, not to spoil history since i assume the anime is going to cover this eventually but i have not read the manga, still POTENTIAL SPOILER: Leifs Expedition laid the groundwork for the future semi permanent settlement attempt of, among others, Thorfinn Karlsefinn. They certainly had conflict with the natives. The Sagas claim that the natives were the aggressors and attacked them once their Ships were beached, which lead to at least 8 dead on first contact, most of them natives iirc. So less profit and more, "this is my land, its already settled, fuck of" kind of deal.
@P99s-s
@P99s-s Год назад
@@dracocrusher certainly depends on which contact we are talking about. Columbus arrived almost 500 years later in the the Caribbean, Modern Haiti. By all accounts the Europeans were horrible and the clear aggressors then. Columbus had, on his second trip, promised the Spanish crown tons of slaves and gold for them to finance the Venture. But he couldn’t make use of the natives as slaves (The Colombian exchange of diseases made it basically impossible for them to survive the trip back to Spain in significant numbers) so he almost worked them to extinction on Haiti to look for gold where barely any was. Leif’s and Thorfinns Expepedion were entire different just from an organizational level. They were more private ventures. With completely different cultural roots. The point was to replicate the successful settlements of Iceland and Greenland. The natives weren’t really a variable they considered, while in the Caribbean, they were the whole point. But when we look and differentiate the 15th century Spanish and the 11th century vikings, we have to the same for the natives. The problem here is that we mostly have European records and therefore a European POV. Columbus paints a picture of these peaceful, docile, easily subjucatable natives, because that helps him in his efforts to keep getting the Spanish crown Interested. The sagas paint a picture of the fierce, brave, warriors they encountered because the Viking settlement attempts failed and they better justify why (especially in Viking culture) a strong enemy would satisfy that. The sagas are also likely oral accounts that only got written down in the 13th and 14th century, so obviously calling them accurate would be the overstatement of the century and authorial liberty can be assumed on top of that. But, even with all of that in mind, I would guess that a northern Inuit tribe in Canada matched up with private venture 11th century Viking crews who didn’t expect them would fair a lot better in combat than a southern Caribbean island tribe against a 15th century Spanish fleet with all the European combat technology that was since developed, backed by the crown and aware of how to run an encomienda style island colony since that just did that on the Canary Islands Hope this is at least a tiny bit interesting to you, I didn’t mean for it to be this long when i started typing!

Heya! I am familiar with Viking history, culture and mythology, just figured I'd help with some of your questions. First, the name Floki should be said like Flow And Key. Vikings had chain mail, but like long swords, it was for the rich. Leif Erickson was actually a true blue explorer. There are no records to suggest he killed or fought any natives he saw. Lastly, see serpents and such was also present but not nearly as wild like in other cultures, you even see the infamous Nordic Sea Beast in Thorfinn's dream.

@nicholasjacobs6605
@nicholasjacobs6605 Год назад
Actually Leif Erikson never even met the Native people, the Norse explorers only started meeting the Native people after Erik had stopped going with them and they also actually did have a pretty hostile relationship with the native people as Leif's brother Thorvald was actually killed by Natives and was the first non-Native person to be buried on American soil (tho it should be said that this was after he and his crew captured and killed 8 Native men who were hiding under canoes, the 9th escaping and alerting their people, so he kind of deserved what he got). This was the follow-up to Leif's trip and the next trip afterward wouldn't be for a while as the hostile Natives deterred the Norseman from coming over for a while. The next trip would be a little spoilery for Vinland tho (as the next explorer is Thorfinn who in reality is a Icelandic merchant and while he did trade with Natives for a bit as they were interested in their iron weapons, this relationship did sour when one of Thorfinn's men killed a native, who they called Skraelings, who had tried to steal a weapon, which caused the Native's to turn against them and Thorfinn ended up going back to Greenland after a winter). Any explorations afterward ended up with similar results, where the Natives were hostile and the Norse-people left or in the last recorded case (Leif Gnupsson, a bishop of Greenland), went missing.

I have a few interesting Viking facts seeing as how I live where Vikings commonly raided. 1) Most raids would target monasteries as they were the most common place to find gold (crosses etc), Wine and more. They would often take the monks as slaves and is partly how Christianity slipped into Viking culture as obviously they celebrated their own gods. It is also didn't help that most monasteries at the time were very isolated and Monks had no way to defend themselves. Easy pickings for a warrior culture like the Vikings. 2) While lots of raid would take women as concubines. There are several historical instances of women going with Vikings of their own free will due to their rugged good looks. Now a child of a concubine would be treated as a free man unless the father didn't acknowledge the child in which case they would be a slave or thrall from birth. Now not all Vikings treated their slaves overly badly. Some were allowed to buy their freedom but it is very rare for this to happen.

So i'm part Scandinavian myself so fun facts about vikings: Dispite vikings being depicted with horned helmets, there has never been any confirmation on that they actually did. Vikings raids were due to them not having enough food and resources mixed with the values of their religion which was centered around the life of a warrior and dying honorably in battle as well as the British empire not being willing to trade with people who 1: were not catholic and 2: they viewed as savages, which was not the case as the vikings had a very functioning society. Vikings were indeed tough warriors so people like to think that vikings did not care about there appearance when were in fact pretty vain and really took care of themselves, bathing often, they often combed their hair and used special spoons to remove wax from their ears, viking men went as far as bleaching their hair and beard. Saturday in Iceland is known as Laugardagur meaning "Washing day" Or "bathing day"

yes, pretty much everybody had chainmail armor in europe at the time with combination of textile armor (gambeson) and boiled leather lamellar, and their helmets which was the only part that was made of big pieces of metal... pretty much noone had the metalurgy tech for that. as for other curious stuff... well they didnt use helmets with horns for starters.. funny enough that was something the samurai did. and pretty basically everybody at this time was stuck with iron weapons or bad steel weapons, some where more behind than others, but the indians specifically had more advanced metalurgy, making Wootz steel (damascus steel, crucible steel) . the "vikings" valued swords made of that highly. but how did they get em? so far its very unlikely they ever reached india. well. "viking" is not a culture but an activity. the scandinavians would "go viking" which meant exploring... of course that exploring could vary from peaceful trading, and taking land noone had found yet, to the good old murder, pillage and conquest. by the way, the vikings wherent the menace people usually think. conflict and invasions was the pastime of everybody really, the vikings where just a bit better at it, also their great focus on navigation let em attack from more unexpected areas. swords overall where rare. they where expensive to make. most people would fight with spears, or axes. and almost always used on par with a shield. shields where the norm, for infantary. it only stops being the norm way later on with plate armor... but there where some crazy ones that still then would consume drugshrooms and go crazy with two handed axes, which hit very hard but left em very exposed. if iam not mistaken these berserkir is from where the term berserker comes from. and despite the whole idea of vikings being savages and fighting just depending on brute strength, there is texts of the people that where attacked by em, talking about their tactics, theres even one that mentions they doing a "testudo" like the romans.

I'm starting to feel like you have some masochistic tendencies based on the series you pick to watch. :P Viking facts hmm? I have some rather basic ones that are somewhat well known: Vikings isn't actually the name of the culture. Vikings were only the raiding parties sent out to plunder, conquer and trade by the various Scandinavian people. Leif Erikson is an actual historical figure that according to real-world legends presumably really did reach North America. The "Vikings" or the cultures that sent out Vikings did indeed know how to make chainmail or something similar. Unlike what many series and movies depict, Vikings did have archers and prefered swords over axes. But swords were expansive, to the point that not every warrior could afford one, so they had to opt for the cheaper axes as a side-arm. Their ships ranged all over Europe occasionally even going deep into the mediteranean to hit as far as Italy and North Afrika. They also were not limited to just the coasts, but attacked up rivers too.

I do find it funny that despite all that research, the author does make up the part where Leif actually met the Native people, as Leif never did actually meet Natives, instead his brother did, but I don't remember if he has a brother in Vinland, so they might have just combined him and his brother Thorvald into one character for simplicity (tho this wouldn't go well for Leif then, as Thorvald ends up getting killed by the Natives when he explores there 3 years after Leif's expedition or maybe the brother's already dead during Vinland as Leif in Vinland seems pretty old and has been telling his story for a while now, so its probably been more then 3 years since he visited Vinland/America).

We don’t know if they killed them or not. They didn’t really write things down

They did actually write, its how we know about Leif Erikson in the first place, as there is literally a story called the Saga of Leif Erikson, which was prose (so sung narratives) that was spread between 900 - 1100 CE in Iceland part of time called the Saga Ages (Lief Erikson's probably didn't get started sung until at least after 1000 CE as that was around the time he had his voyage there), but later in 1300 - 1400 CE was recorded to paper (These were basically stories that focused on history like genealogies and family hsitory, etc.). However, according to those stories, Leif never met the Native people, his brother did and then died to them (after he captured and killed them first tbh) and afterwards the Norse people basically were constantly in conflict with them (excluding a short time where Thorfinn traded with them with their iron weapons, tho that eventually soured and turned to conflict).

No, Leif actually landed closer to Newfoundland and Labrador based on the directions and landmarks given in the Saga of Erik the Red and the actual archeological evidence found in those areas, so it would still be Canada.

I am very much torn for this episode of this show. While I love that the show shows that not every "norse" is a slavering bloodthirsty warrior which is definitely not the case at the same time it is a very cheap trick to make the viewer care more about our protagonists by making them comform to our modern standards rather than the then and that culture standards.
