@@Frostflame you don´t understand that Intelligent System was forced to change from an RPG to something new because nintendo don´t wanted 2 Mario RPG games and Mario and Luigi was more like the original mario, they don´t wanted Mario storys that are very unlike mario and that´s why IS is forced to change from an RPG to now a puzzle game. It´s not their fault and they are still have great writing
It just bothers me that all they had to do was add some sort of exp system to incentivise you to battle and I’d have little to no complaints about this game
Elliot Duby ik know this isn’t what you mean, but i think the incentive to battle is to get coins so you can buy different versions of the hammer and jump attacks
To be honest, the real incentive for me to battle is fetch quests, NPC, or forced battle, or different equipment and combo to try (e.g. skill tree, skill branches, equipment and loots). Exp by itself doesn't give any incentive at all, I think you are forgetting all the other things that complement the reason for exp system.
DashingIb I mean....they took away the purpose of battle, in a game that spawned two amazing RPG experiences as it’s first two games. Excellent cast of supporting characters, simple and hilarious story, and ENGAGING battle system. I did like Super Paper Mario. I found it fun and engaging. Got a bit repetitive. But, it failed in comparison to Thousand Year Door. THAT is why this looks so lacking to me. I’m sure there’s fun to be had. I’m sure it’ll have its die hard fans....but I for one, am not spending $60 on this!
9:24 doesn't the footage on the screen contradict this complaint? Since the Shyguys and Sniffts are in mix groups but the game still gives Mario the attack bonus
Enemies do not have to be grouped together with other like enemies to get the attack bonus. Just lined up or boxed into a square is all that is required.
Played and LOVED it. It isn’t the RPG game it used to be but it’s an RPG-like adventure game with lots of surprises and awesome new bosses, fantastic environments and new badges etc
I think I'll like the puzzle battle system. I like having to have a think instead of mashing a button repetitively. The charm and visuals looks AMAZING! Also, I love that each Toad you save shows up in the stand to cheer you on in the combat.
And this game will fefi Italy be more challenging then sticker star and color splash cuz its so much easier to make a hard puzzle then a hard strategic battle
@@force4973 part of the fun with PM and TTYD battles is strategizing with your companions, badges, and items to find your fight style and plan for the boss fights
Force What regular fight OK takes that long? And even then at least it’s more stimulating than mashing the same button over and over again to kill the same nooks in other RPGs.
I'm still pumped for this game, its a little disappointing that the game doesn't sound like too much of an improvement but i'm sure playing it will be in for a good time
Agreed. I know I won’t enjoy the combat, but the game itself still looks fun so I’ll still pick it up. I really don’t understand their design choice with the combat
AstrosGamer The whole game isn’t just the combat. Mostly what I’m hoping for are charming characters and level designs. Maybe I’ll be disappointed for hoping too much, but I still want to give it a shot.
Square Enix is very stingy with their IP. Good Luck waiting for Super Mario RPG cause its never gonna happen like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI coming to NSO. I really hope im proven wrong by SE.
@@emersonssbb Nintendo should have been smarter when they collaborated with Square on Mario RPG...Square shouldn't have as much control over a MARIO game as they apparently do. Maybe we could have seen Geno & Mallow in Kart, Party & various sports games. Then again, Nintendo does love making random generic enemies playable and having alternate costumes treated like individual characters instead of putting any real effort into choosing actual characters for the rosters....
Automata 2B Nintendo games like Mansion 3 just don’t go on sale... if you can spare $60 I would just get it as it’s a phenomenal game and I really enjoyed the adventure
If battling is broken I kinda think the game shouldn’t be praised as highly as you did. I get the other features may be good, but battling is such a HUGE part of it, it’s the main gameplay
I can see your point but it’s like praising legend of Zelda bow for being a good walking simulator and ignoring everything else, when reviewing games you have to account for everything like a game might have a bad main story but having the best side quests in the world may make some people want to pick it up.
An RPG is not an RPG without exp, levels, skills(usually), and some sort of battle system that lets you see character progress over time. This game isn't an RPG, and I wanted an RPG. Of course the battles are the most important part, take any amazing RPG out there and rip out the battle system, exp and level system, skill system, and put in a shitty puzzle mini-game instead and that game would now be trash. I guess it could still have a great story, but then I'm only willing to pay half price or less for half of a game or less. So sad they had to go and fuck up a great looking game like this. Hopefully Ghosts of Tsushima doesn't have eating competitions instead of sword combat...and hopefully Cyberpunk 77 isn't a Let's Dance clone at its heart. Like FFS how stupid can a studio be to make a battle system like this in a line of PURE RPG GAMES...the incompetence is staggering. Sorry if you like it, good for you, hope you enjoy the game, I know I wouldn't.
@@BlueAizu_ it is rather disappointing. I can admire innovation when it pays off, and devs deserve to be able to be creative, but it doesn't always pan out
Because the current series producer, Kensuke Tanabe, doesn't want to make an RPG. He wants to make the same game over and over with Toads and some new battle system gimmick that won't matter because battles aren't necessary to do.
@@matthewmagnani2915 I actually never got around to galxy 2 as much as I loved the first game.. Something about a new 3d Mario so quick after the last one turned me off it... I've heard its a fantastic game though
This game is NOT a RPG game. It’s a adventure game with puzzles and lots of witty writing tho still in the kid side. Forgot about the other paper Mario games and think of this as a spine off. Like for real or you will get mad lol This is the type of game I play for an hour some days. What keep me playing is seeing the new areas which do get more impressive the more you play. Olivia who at first start out as annoying you grew to like and her cute charm. Not trying to 100% always moving forward so you don’t burnout cuz it’s very easy in this game. Don’t grind for money and battles, have fun with items and use accessory. My fav so far which makes the game battle bearable is the accessory where it tells you how you should line up the enemies omg it’s a LIFE SAVER. You get it after beating the 2nd boss and if you can past that it really helps I like this game but don’t over do it and have a diff mind set
To be fair, I played a bit of Color Splash the other day. It's not terrible but you may want to watch at least 2-3 more reviews to see what the general thoughts are 🤔
@@MaximumAddition it's really a matter of taste. Which of these would I find more fun for myself? Paper Mario Origami King might be a good game by it's own merits, but sometimes you need to weigh the priorities of one's self
I feel like Nintendo has lost sight of what made the original Paper Mario games as popular as they are. It just feels like the heart, soul and creativity of the characters, worlds and stories we remembered from the first 3 titles are dumbed down. The Origami King definitely feels like a step in the right direction but this is just like what happened with Super Mario Party and Mario Tennis Aces. You don't need to fix what wasn't broken to begin with.
they did the same thing with Star Fox....Command on DS was a gimmicky touch controlled trainwreck with the worst story possible ( I liked the new big bad, Emperor Anglar though...he had potential ), then after a long ass time gave us another remake of the original ( yep, 64 is literally a remake of the SNES original that incorporated aspects of the then scrapped Star Fox 2 ) that again focused on a gimmicky control setup while now ignoring a ton of what fans loved about the series. It's like they're afraid of originality and story half the time
This is the type of game you have to play in person to decide if you like it or not. Gameplay is a bit different. I’m sure its something I can get used to. I really wished they added a level exp system. It makes the battling system not as exiting, but I do love the series and will give it a try. *Update: I love this game ❤️
I really liked the battle system. The coins were good enough for me to battle. But the Battle system seems to be “You either love it or hate it” KingK really loves the battle system but then Arlo... not so much
As a guy who was uncertain on how I'd feel about the battle system, I went into this with an open mind because I saw so many folks enjoying this title-- I couldn't get into. I think you detailed the battle system perfectly It's either insulting easy or baffling, I had another person with me trying to solve these puzzles. I didn't know about the assist mode, so that is neat feature, but I genuinely think that could help a little. However, I just didn't find it all that rewarding for the amount of effort you had to put into battles. Of course, just because it wasn't for me does not mean it isn't for everyone! Good review!
The battle system does ruin the game for me. I'm not buying it. If I want to see the great writing and wit in the game, I will just watch a let's play of it.
@@bluebomber875 because it doesn't take much to realize it's moving the ring a couple times then doing one of a few super repetitive attacks. You can make your own mind up easily if that's appealing or not. Apparently it doesn't even evolve much by the end game, all the enemies are samey etc..
@@bluebomber875 the partners have almost no influence during battle, I don't want to deal with a puzzle with every battle, and there is no exp. I don't have to actually play the game to recognize these points. It is all clear on trailers and reviews. The game looks great and seems well written, but that doesn't make up for the poor battle system imo.
@@bluebomber875 If the gameplay is lame but the story is great then i can just watch somebody play it whilst i enjoy the story bits. We already know how the gameplay works because of Treehouse presentation
Yep, I can tell just by the sight of the battle system that it's a purchase canceller for me. Glorified fucking puzzle game, looks so repetitive and dull even just the second time watching someone else do it. No exp, no levels, no skills or character progression outside new boots and hammers? Nope. Way to continue the Paper Mario RPG legacy, by taking out the RPG...Plus maybe your average person could have some challenge with that system, it looks so simple to me it's insulting, I'd rather have Paper Mario the Sudoku Curse...
Dang I'm definitely gonna get this (unlike the last 2) but I just think this game could have really been even better if there were an incentive to battles. I get it. They wanted to try something new and that's fine. Just make the battles worth doing (xp, leveling up, new attacks) and that could be the perfect balance between old and new Paper Mario.
@Joel Johnson First off, if there doesn't need to be a purpose for the battles then why do them? If engaging enemies in battles does not reward me for defeating them then battling does not contribute anything to progressing in the game, period. Secondly, BOTW's and Odyssey's combat sequences are completely different than Paper Marios turn based combat sequences. In BOTW and Odyssey you are given the freedom to choose whether you want to fight enemies or not. In Origami king, Color Splash and Sticker Star you are drawn into an RPG-like, turn based battle sequence when engaging enemies that you have to either complete or try to run away. Finally, in BOTW fighting enemies is the *MAIN* way to get new weapons and gear. Fighting enemies rewarded you with weapons, shields and recipe ingredients. in Odyssey you are rewarded with coins for taking out enemies. Coins were used to revive you meaning the more coins you had, the more times you could be revived. And you could use coins to purchase outfits.
Man, I remember so many people were so happy about the jump and hammer coming back so that they wouldn't just spend coins on expendable items in battles to get more coins to spend on expendable items. Well. I guess they technically don't have to with the base jump attack, but... Well, what Alex said.
"Weapons" and "break" are two words gamers do not want to hear side-by-side. In the Golden Sun series, many armour/accessories (esp. Rings) could be Used (vs. Equipped) for special effects and have a chance of breaking. I never Used them. It sounds like a pain to go back to stores and repair the broken items. Much greater a tragedy to use the coins earned from a battle to repurchase an attack that was used in that battle.
Dang it, I mean I didn’t get my hopes up but with the battle system I guess I’ll pass on the game. I mean I played Bug Fables so I’ve gotten my Paper Mario for the console anyway.
If you already got your Paper Mario console fix with Bug Fables why not just pick this up for something different? It certainly looks really good, even if it doesn't have the battles you were idealizing. You might find yourself surprised.
I liked how in the older games, the paper was more of an Art Style cuz it was a story from a book (hence the Chapters), but now its kinda overdone and they're self aware of it. The big white outlines, how they wiggle while standing in place, etc. Really offputting. And yeah the combat looks terrible and that's what I loved most about the older games. Using different badge set ups. having to manage flower points and star abilities.
Over time, I found the battles alright. The battle items last for ten-ish uses each which is more than enough. As for the coins: Even when I had over 50,000, I was down to 200 really quickly. If you want to complete the game, you need the coins. Overall, I'm really enjoying the game.
Sad thing is, that's actually REALLY easy to achieve. Have her beams and armor take health/damage with each use, but AS she uses it, it wears down your upgraded suit health until you repair it with specific metals that you find in the overworld Yes, i know energy ammo is in metroid prime games.
9:22 Puzzles aren't solved by grouping the same types of enemies together. The only requirement is getting them into 1x4 or 2x2 arrangements. The actual enemy type doesn't matter at all, so your complaint about Sniffits/ShyGuys being similar from the back is pretty unimportant. In your own gameplay example, you got a "Perfect Lineup" which proves that mixing the two up doesn't matter (though they do have different HP)...
It’s not really a paper Mario game, but super Mario rpg legend of the seven stars is my favorite Mario rpg game. I’d recommend going back to play TTYD! If you like origami king I’m sure you’d like that one too
ttyd is better if you like a more traditional rpg with a more compelling story. This is for if you like puzzles or something and don't wanna fight at all
I started a Let’s Play if you’re interested! Though I will say I’m feeling it was money well-spent so far (only an hour in lol) because it feels like the Nintendo focus on FUN is really front and center ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sNpA6h_3bD8.html
Nintendo really needs to get over this idea of putting degrading items into their games. It wasn't particularly fun in Breath of the Wild, and adds a layer of annoyance and tedium to Animal Crossing New Horizons. If there's any proof of this being the case, when diving came out, and there is literally nothing that stops you from just diving forever and enjoying your time - that feeling of relief is one.
It sounds like the only thing they really need to change, apart from elemental battles so I hear, is the repetitive nature of the over world battles. Either by providing a set number of enemies in the over world each with a unique take on the turn based system, or even a system that destroys earlier enemies in the over world on contact. I am so HYPED for this game, two more days.
What are you saying? The ring system is actually quite a well made battle system. Besides, as you progress through the game, over world confetti becomes more scarce and larger amounts of money will be needed to purchase accessories, giving more purpose to the battles.
I don't understand the critic of "not able to solve the rings puzzle with the time given and receive damage". You are able to buy more time with your coins so that's technically not an issue, right? I see parts of gameplay with 18k coins...
No joke, nearly (or every I don’t remember) all the reviews I watched of this game was carried by “the games pretty funny, and the environment’s cool” instead of the story, setting and fighting. Legit the hub world might be the best part of the game
Just finished the game today, I'd say the comedy is fantastic, the environments are pretty great and the combats boring. Boss battles are great tho. Story isn't as bad as you'd think. It's at a base fine enough? But the charachters are all great and feel different from each other. Completion is encouraged and I feel like I might try sometime. I will say, combat is the worst part, but it isn't all of the game, and it's not that bad. Handholdy if anything.
Honestly, I really enjoyed the plot and humor that the game offered. Definitely had some heartfelt moments. For me, as long as the gameplay is decent and has a great story and well-timed humor, I'll at least give it a try. If I like it, great! If not, then it was fun while it lasted.
I can't wait to start digging into this game! I expect the gameplay to be a little bit different than previous games but I'm ready for something new to play/stream other than Animal Crossing New Horizons! I'm a little burnt out on ACNH. Anyways, great review!
Me personally, the lack of an exp system for me is breath of fresh air. Sometimes, you just wanna play a game like this without worrying about grinding levels
I assume this is your first paper Mario game? From the arts and craft section anyway since the whole no exp bs has already over stayed its welcome since stickerstar :/ , this being the 3rd game with no exp an from the SS/CS series
This game is definitely a big step up from Sticker Star and Color Splash. Enough to where I really want to get home from work to play more. It’s not the first two in terms of quaility but I can finally say it’s a good experience so far for a change.
I actually thought it was worse than Sticker Star. The only thing I think was a solid improvement was that you had a connected world rather than the SS style map.
That's a great overview of the game! Thanks. It seems like its a bit too much like color splash and sticker star... but overall a decent little adventure game.
I’d love to experience the humor (and the battle system) I dearly wish there was a demo, because this doesn’t sound like something I’d enjoy. I’ve never played a Paper Mario game, I wish they’d get a re-release. I’d buy that in a heartbeat. But this I think I’ll wait for a sale.
I really like Origami King's music! And even though SS and CS were complete fails, I really, *really* like their music, too! Especially CS's music; that battle theme has me boppin' for *days,* lol.
I can only speak for me, but I really didn't enjoy it. I was hopeful with the trailer too. Then I played it and it felt like repeated slaps to the face.
@Joel Johnson think of basketball, you get points for making shots right.. that's old paper mario And this game allows you to shoot a ball out of a canon from outside the nba dome. Yeah it's cool and entertaining but you get no points for it. So doing it is pointless after the first few times and you might as well just have gone for normal shots.... but you can't make normal shots now, you're stuck shooting your canon shots but with no rewards whatsoever
Thanks for cutting to the chase in the first 2 minutes alex, im gonna like and comment to improve NL's youtube algorithm and let the video play while i enjoy another paper mario title.
I’m getting the game even if the combat system looks like trash. I skipped the last 2 paper Mario’s and I’m ready for this one! Everything else looks great.
Just a note this world may not feel like the first three games -- play it as a game that it interests you, not because it's name is a Paper Mario game.
It's like they listen to everyone hopes and complaints and decided to the exact opposite again lol. Bruh it would have been better to just have this battle system for bosses and none for mobs.
Nintendo have been trying to distance the Paper Mario series from its RPG roots for the past 4 entries now. Maybe it’s time they brought back Super Mario RPG to scratch that itch?
Right now the only thing that comes close to doing that is Bug Fables The Everlasting Sapling. It took the level of story telling, and game play of the first two Paper Mario games and expanded on them. It's so much better than TOK it's not funny. It's also 1/3 the price.
I really like this game, it gives off a lot of super paper mario charm, by that I mean that every ally builds a lot of character throughout the game. If you are a big fan of super paper mario you should definitely get this
...Yup, I’m gonna pass on this for obvious reasons. But I’m happy for those who are planning to buy this! Have fun with the game! I’ll be tackling my backlog and looking forward to the recent rumors about the Mario 35th Anniversary remasters and the Nintendo Direct on the 20th.
I had zero expectations that we were getting the old battle system back. If it's fun that's all that matters. I liked it when the plots were crazy like in The Thousand Year Door and Super, it seems like that same crazy story telling is present here. I'd still call it an rpg but barely.
I really love the Origami King but I did have two gripes with it. One being Shy Guys Finish Last because I will never get over the bubkiss required to get it's trophy. And the boss battles can be really confusing even though they have cool bosses.
@@necrov23 Nope, that's only early games with Goombas n all, later on the enemies just scramble over the board without prior warning according to other reviews and gameplay clips
@@isimioyekunlemarktaiwo3643 Not really, there's only one answer always. After that you turn off your mind. There's no room for unique tactics that were present in the ogs.
12:21 Here's my main problem with this if the best parts of the game are the story and the characters and not the combat or gameplay the part I would be playing...why don't I just watch someone else play it? Or just watch someone else live stream it? I would get to see all the "good" the game has to offer and I wouldn't even need to pay for it. Which I think really does need to brought up more this is a $70+ dollar game and honestly does this game really feel worth the full price?
As the old saying goes if it's not brokwn don't fix it. Idk why Nintendo loves gimmicks so much because half the time they are poorly implemented ideas that sound good on paper but just don't go very well with the game. Overall the game looks good but the combat rubics cube type system just doesn't do it for me and is a massive turn off since the fights is what makes the game overall
I could get behind the puzzle based battle system, if it was experience/lvl based and no weapon deterioration. Instead we have a game that failed to learn the problems of its previous entries. So I think I’ll skip the game in favour of watching someone watching it on RU-vid. Someone give a shout when they finally get their heads on straight and rerelease paper mario 1 & 2 on the switch.
