Residents and park goers are raising concerns over ponds in Vancouver, saying many are drying out while some now sit completely empty. As Shaurya Kshatri tells us, some say the city isn’t doing enough to maintain them.

Given how much rain we get the rest of the year, perhaps these ponds need their own rain cisterns placed nearby that could help fill them up in the drier months. There are very simple ways to divert rain to be collected and stored.

Great reporting. 👍

The memorial park pond is a geographic low point and when the city refreshed the pond they punctured the clay cap that kept the pond from draining into the soil.

It has to do with Vancouver's Park Board hatred towards geese 😉

Want to conserve water? Limit power washing to 15 minutes each summer per household and business. There are lawn watering restrictions in place, why not power washing? Our neighbours across the street power washed their driveway and concrete patio area for 3 hours one day and 2 hours the next. Our next door neighbour spent several hours doing the same on their rental property. That's a totally useless and ridiculous waste of water. In the meantime the Park Board and City are ok about depriving our wildlife of their much needed water source - the ponds at Vanier, Jericho, False Creek, Marpole etc. Turn the water back on and save the wildlife.

Vancouver has 3 massive lakes and the biggest watershed in the world. Since the founding of Vancouver, there has never been a water shortage. The idea that rapidly increasing the population is some how contingent on me to make sacrifices should not be my problem.

@@rosssmith8481 Of course it's all about YOU ! At least try to act like a decent citizen, or is that too much to ask ? As per attitude, see the song below.

@2011Azure So doubling the population in Vancouver is contigent on me to make sacrifices? We've been here 6 generations, now we have socialists like you telling us the whole world is our problem To solve. All overpopulation affects brought on by Government IS NOT my problem.

Want to conserve water. Build less 50 story condos and divert that water back to the ponds and the wild life it supports.

The joke is that in the near future we'll lose a local park to rain water. When they complete the rebuilding of the neighbourhood around Oakridge, Columbia park will be turned into a rainwater processing plot to handle the run off fromthe rebuilt 12 -18 story condos built just north of 41st. It won't be conserved but fed to the trees and such that they will cover the park with. (And a nice little concrete plaza in the middle of it so the people can enjoy it.) Check out the signs they put around Columbia park to se the proposal.

These residents are more concerned about their house value more than anything else.

I wouldn’t worry about your little pond when we have lakes that are half empty . We are currently facing an unprecedented drought ! Wildlife are going to die , vegetation/crops etc will also go and we’ll be right behind them! Climate change is an extinction level event folks we had the past twenty years to make major changes and we didn’t now it’s to late & the effects are in full swing in many regions around the globe. I’m in a region where the temperature is consistently 2 to 15 degrees Celsius above normal day after day week after week month after month with no precipitation in sight !! Alouette lk is just as low in beginning of July as it was last year in October at the end of the season. This is 3 months premature . Everything is getting worse season after season. The arctics summer sea ice is nearly gone . The sun rays use to bounce off that sea ice harmlessly back into space . Now the sun rays are being absorbed into the big old blue only heating the ocean that much more ! The immense amount of methane currently being released into our atmosphere from the melting permafrost in the arctic is not included in any climate model . I assure you most of us will perish well before the end of this century ! We can’t even contain the wild fires . & Sadly most of the world carry’s on like business as usual . I can’t wait to see the look on your faces when you realize there is no turning back ! You weren’t willing to make sacrifices and soon you’ll feel the repercussions of that choice. World war is about the only thing that could potentially save a small chunk of earths inhabitants and trust me our governments will annihilate us all when it’s time to save themselves and to make sure the human species Carrie’s on. It’s gonna be ugly ! Elon musk doesn’t have enough time to make mars a reality . Killing billions will end pollution among so much more . Survivors will have to ride out the wave . If even possible . I assure you prices are going up around the globe to pay for there survival . Doomsday is upon us . T minus 30 years . Enjoy 🍻 ✌️

Stop complaining, just buy rain barrels and fill the pond instead of signing useless petitions.
