When reading and counting wasn't such a normal thing they used chains as a measurement. Opal is formed by the minerals liquids that seep into cracks under old oceans, the oceans eventually dry out, the rock gradually compresses, and that's how opal is formed. Gold is only in it's liquid state when it's hot enough to be a fluid, ie: Volcanic Magma, which gets injected into the cracks between different types of rock as it's under pressure, hence why it's often found where quartz meets another type of rock, as that's also how quartz is fomed. As that rock get's eroded by glaciers, rivers, and wind, over huge periods of time, it gets ground down into the old river channels, which constantly change.
