The Great Sphinx of Egypt has fascinated humanity for millennia and even today, this lion bodied monument with the head of a pharoah, still remains a monument shrouded in mystery and wonder.
It sits in front of the three large Giza pyramids from the 4th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, and throughout Ancient Egyptian times, it was been subject to a large amount of restoration, with much of the body covered by masonry. The Greek and the Romans also worked on the monument.
Buried in the sands of time, it was finally excavated in the 19th century by Giovanni Caviglia and Howard Vyse and then again between 1925 and 1936 by Emile Baraize.
In this video, I’ve compiled photographs taken during the Baraize excavation in the 1920s and 30s, followed by pictures taken by Mark Lehner from the later excavations of the 1970s and 1980s.
I hope you enjoy the video, which I’m providing as a research tool, and please do comment any interesting observations below.

What is that ribbed effect? Water levels, ancient Nile flooding? If so why does it go all the way up the head too? The lower portion beneath the chin appears lighter than the head in the first few images. If that's from being beneath ground level for so long why does it appear more eroded by weathering/flood waters?

Great photographs. I was particularly interested in the paving in front of the forepaws (now covered with wooden decking). It is of rather crude construction and the stones seem to be the same size as the casing stones used on the paws and lower body. The image at @18:00 clearly shows a channel of blocks placed at right angles to the rest of the pavement. I have often wondered if this 'paving' covers an earlier feature and possibly a cavity or entrance to a lower level. It is certainly some kind of restoration work and not like the rest of the Sphinx enclosure or the blocks that make up the floors around the pyramids at Giza (which are made of much better fitting and much larger blocks).
@richardvanbergen7175
@richardvanbergen7175 Год назад
The wooden deck is not placed for show or to have something to better walk on. It’s absolutely done to coverup what lies beneath. I think it’s done after some excavation. As so many many many things, archeology is for at least 50% a secret. All to hide ancient civilizations and the alien technology.

The width of the neck suggests the head was a much larger feature at some point, and was modified to show human characteristics long after it's construction. It was likely the head of a lion considering the body, and the headpiece being the dimensions you'd want for the lion's mane.

This is very impressive. Gave me the feeling that I could reach out, across time, and touch the hands of the original craftsmen, who built this amazing monument. What it must have been like, when it was new. How it must have felt, to witness such things, when the carvings were still sharp, and the paint was still fresh. This monument is older than even you realise, It shows all signs of 10,000 easily, probably even twice that. A thousand years eroded by flowing water, another few thousand constantly wind and sand blasted, and buried multiple times for more thousands. Excavated, and repaired a few times over. It has this history showing in all the wear, tear and repair of its stones.

It's certainly a good record to have to hand, Matt, thanks - might be worth adding a few of the oldest photos you could find which show the poor thing buried up to it's chin & then another when the wind or whatever had rearranged the sand a bit. There's an interesting shot from 1944 showing a buttress under its chin! I think if it wasn't for all the restorations down the eons, the poor thing would be unrecognisable! Would be fun if we could 'see' inside, as based on most of the other monuments around here what's visible on the surface is barely half the story. Cheers!

It's great that at the time people recognized the importance of restoring this ancient history to its original state. But it seems as if the Sphinx has been restored so often that it is no longer entirely clear what the Sphinx originally looked like. The opening at the right ear continues to fascinate me. What is the function of the slot next to it? and to the right of the opening there is a small round hole, will this also have a meaning? It is also clearly visible that behind the dream stela there is an entrance to the Sphinx. That's why I hope that the Egyptian authorities will someday loosen up and allow archaeologists access to this magical monument, so that we all know what lies hidden in and under the Sphinx.

Excellent. The Sphinx was in a dreadful state prior to recent restorations. It seems fairly clear that the structure had been extensively probed for treasure, perhaps in or around the Roman era, and again prior to the obvious holes being bricked over in the last few hundred years. The second Sphinx nearby remains in the same state of disrepair as its sibling was several hundred years ago , but is headless and never underwent extensive renovations. The second Sphinx differs in design, with multiple doorways around the base, which the authorities have gated, and which archaeologists state lead to an extensive tunnel network under the Giza plateau., including the underneath of the main Sphinx we know today.

Another great video, thanks Matt. Very enchanting watching and absorbing how the Sphinx looked back in the 1930s combined with some slightly chilling Twin peaks style music. If you had of added in a Prank Screaming Halloween face after 10 mins I would have needed reanimating. Makes me wonder with all the restoration work done in the 1930s is this like a Picasso now when I have painted over the top? It was really in bad shape before the work done in the 30s. Also I wondered how the lines on the headdress look so crisp in many parts. Considering the head was always above the ground exposed to rain and wind blowing sand particles against it. The rain errosion to the enclosure seems so massive when you consider it was buried under sand for hundreds of years and slightly protected. Or has the paint originally on the headdress protected it somehow for the first few thousand years. I recall the head was a different type of rock, but the difference seems immense.

I personally believe the Sphinx was originally entirely covered in stone masonry. The old kingdom blocks that some think are restoration blocks are actually the original blocks that covered the entire Sphinx. All the blocks after that are restoration efforts. Nice images Matt.
@dazuk1969
@dazuk1969 Год назад
@@melikemusic753 Yes, the Sphinx was probably entirely covered in blocks when it was constructed in the old kingdom. It was buried up to its neck in sand for a very long time. The head and back would have been the only exposed areas so the blocks on the back were quarried/nicked as was common practise.
@farmerpete6274
@farmerpete6274 Год назад
No, not correct. There is a shot of 'claw' carved into the bedrock behind the casing stones, with the image carved again into the casing stones. So it would appear that the original Sphinx comprised bedrock only.
@dazuk1969
@dazuk1969 Год назад
@@farmerpete6274 The basic shape of the Sphinx was carved out of the bedrock, then the finishing blocks applied on top to give it's defined shape. Apart from the head, there is no finished bedrock stone on the Sphinx...even under the blocks. Matt, what keeps the Sphinx Enclosure from refilling with sand or does it? I would suggest that the sand came with a flood or inundation over a short period of time with the wind adding some help when times were dry. There must have been an encampment there before the monument was carved. A single wandering artisan would likely not have been responsible and even his camp would be long lived. It took many guided hands and hours to carve with archaic tools. A dedicated group created an impressively large riverside attraction to promote commerce and culture. Ancient people were quite smart and clever and didn't have to retain trivial facts, only knowledge of their crafts. I can see how the Masons feels like a religious group.
