I have an old 396 I would love to make up like this engine .Stock 2 bolt could run an easy 500 hp I believe.. Thanks for doing such a great job of filming these segments..It reminds me of high school Auto Shop class..Mr Bennet showed us everything about engines He would go through it and holler a name out then the classmates would take over the job...
DUDE ! YOU ARE MY HERO ! FINALLY SOMEONE DOING THE RAT SOME JUSTICE ON RU-vid ! SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT AND WHY THEY ARE DOING THINGS. I WORKED FOR A MARINE ENGINE BUILDER IN THE EARLY 90'S AND IT TOOK BIG DOLLARS TO GET 750 HP! THIS IS WHEN SONNY LEONARD WAS PUSHING THE LIMITS OF THE TALL DECK. RUNNING 871 AND 1071 BLOWERS TO GET 800 TO 900 HP WAS CUTTING EDGE THEN. THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEOS...THEY ARE CLEAR AND TO THE POINT AND VERY REFRESHING. IN AN AGE WHEN EVERYONE IS MESSING WITH THE LSX PLATFORM ITS NICE TO SEE SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING WITH THE BIG BOY !!!!!!!! AWESOME !!!! KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK!!!
Man you are Proficient with that machine!! In all your videos!! Never wasting time, just get right to it, and still turn out good content and teaching us the hot rodding tips to boot!! Very well!!
Awesome video. I am currently rebuilding the orignal 396 from my 71 camaro. its good to see someone that knows what they are doing when it comes to head work. I cant wait to see how this turns out.
Can the chamber cutting be done if the valve job has already been performed? I am about to start porting the bad runners on my 781's tomorrow and will wait for the next video to see whats needed on the other runners. Also, the bowl hog was done on the intakes but really needs more on the exhaust. Could this also be done with the valve job already done? Ive always used a die grinder in the past, but I really like the precision of the machining for a good baseline to start from.
Jess Roberts I think it depends on your combo. I'm using stock 088 heads on my 496 street engine. On the dyno it made almost 570hp and 600tq with 9:1.1 CR. 781'S are good heads though they just need to be worked.
