As a follow-up to the 4-year review, I provide an update on the Husqvarna GTH52 XLS garden tractor mower after 5 years of ownership. I talk about how well the tractor is holding up and issues over the last year. I also address some viewer comments and give my opinions of John Deere vs. Husqvarna based on the last two mowers I've owned.

I also own a Husqvarna 52LS model. Had it for 3 years and got 300 hours on it now. I'm starting to have issues with the blade engagement but gonna try taking the mower deck apart and cleaning the deck as well as lube and tighten any belts/pulleys.

You might want to check your spindle bearings while you're at it.

Thank you for your two reviews. I think they are the most thorough and comprehensive I have seen. I have a 348XD that I bought used with about 80 hours on it. I have had a ton of issues and had to replace practically half the parts, But as you said, this is a better quality mower for the price. But unfortunately, Husqvarna discontinued making it. I have an issue that is driving me nuts. Every time I run the mower for anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes, the engine just shuts down. I wait a day and try again and get about the same use from it. I have replaced all of the fuel parts but to no avail. I am ready to throw it in the river. I want to keep believing in it, but this is crippling my efforts on my 3 acres. Any help from anyone would be most appreciated. Thanks and keep doing what you are doing. You have a real gift and a lot of expertise.

Thanks. Can't say for sure what would be causing the shutdowns. Besides loose electrical connections, it could be a vapor lock situation or debris in the fuel tank or lines. Plugged fuel cap vents could cause the vapor lock. If that's the cause, the engine should restart if you remove the fuel cap. Anyone else have any ideas?

@@outdoorsinoregon I was also going to suggest checking the intake and air filters as high heat can suck up most of the available O2 and just sufficate the engine just long enough to shut off

Thanks for both thorough, balanced and honest reviews. I have a Craftsman Garden Tractor (GT5000) with a 22hp B&S motor from 2004 that's served me well. Looking at the 354 to replace the Craftsman for all the same reasons mentioned in reviews. The Craftsman still runs, but it throws a rod if under too much stress. I hit something years ago, and the craftsman service mechanic took the mower apart and showed me how to reset. An easier approach is reducing the rpms then slowly increasing will align the rod. Sometimes I have to do this ten times while mowing. Hard to know whether or not I should try to keep this mower going or not given its age. There is no hour counter on that mower. Time for tires, etc.

Inflation has pushed the prices of mowers so high over the last couple of years, I can understand wanting to hold on to an older one as long as possible. However, I think the TS 354XD should be a solid mower with some nice features that my previous gen model doesn't have. I would not hesitate to buy one provided the finances allow for it.

I have a tractor just like the one you showed .. The problem I had with Husqvarna was the warranty on the steel deck . I had a blade pulley crack the deck house housing on the deck . Make a long story short they would not stand but the warranty on the deck .. tractor and deck was 3yrs old... The excuse they gave me was I didn't change the blades enough times... I have over 5acres of lawn I cut. I go through about 3 sets of blades a summer. So I had to buy a new deck that they wouldn't warranty . So think what you want about their warranty on the tractor and steel deck but I will never buy another Husqvarna mower.. Even the dealer where I brought it from new said they had never heard that before when they got the call from the warranty dept. at Husqvarna. I wish all you Husqvarna owners luck when you need repairs....

I don't own this model but I do have its successor the 354 xd with the Kawasaki engine and KT 66 differential with electronic differential lock 72 hours and other than bending 2 antisway bars due to operator error, it has served me well for the hours I have put on it in about 3 seasons. I have a large hill in front of my house and another behind, ( my property is on the east side of the Shawangunk ridge in NY) and the locking differential has made all the difference in safety and capability ascending and descending these hills, especially in comparison to my former craftsman and cub cadet lawn tractors.. Compared to a JD with similar features, the Husqvarna is a far better value imo .. the price has risen from 3700 to 4K since I purchased mine but is still less expensive than a comparable JD, I was fortunate that there was a 3 year 0% interest offer at time of purchase

Yes, I have steep hills as well, and the locking diff was a huge improvement for me too. The prices have really skyrocketed over the last 5 years, so I'm hoping this one lasts, and I won't have to buy a new one any time soon.

D105 mowers had transmission recalls

Indeed. This mower came with a light duty CVT transmission with a plastic case. I never had issues with mine, but I came to the conclusion that I really needed a heavy duty unit for my property. Unlike a hydro, the CVT also required shifting from forward to reverse with a lever, and the operation at low speed was really jittery. I like my hydrostatic transmission much, much better.
