First, a correction: We credited the photo of the Lockheed L-O49 Constellation at 20:23 to "Bob Willis" of Dublin Ireland. His correct name is Mark Willis who kindly gave us permission to use this photo. We apologize to Mark for this error.
This is Part 3 of a 4-Part series on two iconic aircraft that defined the fledgling airline industry in the U.S.--the FORD TRIMOTOR in the first two parts and the DOUGLAS DC-3 in the second two. In this Part 3 of our “AIRLINE INDUSTRY WOEFUL START SERIES” we begin with the events that led to the disastrous Great Airmail Crisis of 1934 and how that impacted the forward evolution of the airlines and then cover the contemporaneous development of the Douglas DC-3 which is often termed “The Plane that Changed the World”. This plane literally molded the airlines into what they are today. We then view some modern-day footage of several DC-3’s in action, along with a military C-47 variant.

Thanks for the great history. I rode in the jump seat of a C-47 on a freight run. It had an inscribed sign in the cockpit stating it towed gliders on D-Day for the Canadian Air Force.

Seeing that inscription would have knocked me off-center! At some point I hope that plane found its way to a museum. Thanks for viewing and your complement!

@@AeroDinosaur cheers. I’m 32, so outside of the age range that remember these aircraft in regular service or worked to keep them on the air show circuit, etc as you and your colleagues did. Your knowledge and archives are a treasure trove!

@@seanpratherful Thank you! One of our main target audiences are those born too late to have lived that aviation era. So, at least you get the second-best with video--and there are still the airshow operations to witness live which I'm sure you've been to (and that we utilize such as in this DC-3 program). All my best to you!
