This is Part 4of a 4-Part series on two iconic aircraft that defined the fledgling airline industry in the U.S.--the FORD TRIMOTOR in the first two parts and the DOUGLAS DC-3 in the second two. In Part 3 of our “AIRLINE INDUSTRY WOEFUL START SERIES” we continued with early airline history and went through the history and technical details of the DC-3/C-47 including modern footage of operations of “The Plane that Changed the World”. In this Part 4 we highlight the World War II military role of the C-47 (the primary military version of the DC-3 transport) with a bit less “lecturing” and a bit more operational footage.

Great video John! I’m 60, and as I was growing up in Puerto Rico, I remember the distinctive sound of those P&W R-1830s of the local airline Caribair. My childhood home is at the end of runway 10 of SJU. Also, many local cargo carriers used them to deliver goods to the Virgin Islands. I sure miss that sound.

Yep, skies are all but silent--no more thunder! I miss them too. Thanks for watching!

Funny you mention the L-188 Electra , I used to fly to Dutch Harbor from Anchorage in the late 80s and early 90s ( crabbing) on Electras of “Reeve Aleutian Airlines” Last I heard the no longer use them. They were (are) an awesome prop liner although you won’t find any pistons in those engines. Also my dad made all and survived obviously)four jumps with the 82nd Airborne division in WWII. He was quite fond of the C-47. Thanks for another awesome and totally enjoyable video.

Thanks Guapo. I've never been on an L-188, and it is probably too late to do so. Reeve Aleutian retired their Electras I think about 2 decades ago--they always had wind and weather to contend with! I think Buffalo still flies two Electra freighters up in Northwest Territories and nearby Airspray flies one or two as firebombers as well. Glad your dad survived the C-47 jumps during the war--for his sake as well as yours! Thanks for your regular visits to AeroDinosaur!

I think CU (with D D-Day Stripes) is C-53 Skytrooper which would of had P&W 1830 engines originally.may after the WWII the airline that brought it from the USAAF may have desided to use 1820 Wright Cyclones engines possibly used on DC-3 's brought by the airline be for WWII.

Yes, I think you are right. As you know there were several other designations other than "C-47", and there were all kinds of engine conversions/changes after the war--would take forever to track them all down!
