Mate, I've been spending the afternoon re-learning how to use a router, as a practice run for making a proper guitar body. Tassie Oak tears out like nothing else if your technique isn't spot-on, thankfully it's only a knock-up! Much respect for the amount of patience and skills you have on display here.

+hawaiian robot Tassie Oak is a nice wood for guitars , heavy but nice. Has really big pores though which makes finishing it a bit more work

1st template was on thinner wood as it was easier to work and shape the curve - Once I was happy with the curve I copied that onto thicker stock for routing ( thicker so I could ride a router bearing against the edge)

What is the brand and model of your table router (at 1 minute in the video)? Would a hand held router mounted in a table work for these applications, Porter cable 690 is what I was thinking. Thanks for the fantastic videos!

On a fender style guitar. the neck pocket is usually 5/8" deep and the neck is 1" thick

hey man love the video, i myself am trying to make a tele :) i got a question though, the wood i'm using it split into 2 parts.. i've already glued the 2 parts together to make it bigger but now i'm worried that when it start to cut it, the two parts will split and i'll have a telecaster thats cut into 2 pieces.

Why do you sand the body contour and then route it out?
@hawaiianrobot
@hawaiianrobot 8 лет назад
+Sigurd Bue from my understanding, the router is great for following the pattern, but works best if close to the desired shape to begin with. Taking minimal amounts of material works way better than trying to cut through a ton of timber on one hit.

Yeah I was going to just go with a standard 1/2 inch diameter , 1 inch long ball bearing flush bit as I hear its better to be a little experienced with routers before using spiral bits.

That's not a bug; that's a feature. It throws loose shavings clear of the work area. It's also good for the circulation and discourages the build-up of dust on the machine itself.

YOU CAN USE HAND TOOLS TO BUILD GUITARS IT TAKES A LOT LONGER BUT TAKE YOUR TIME AND YOU WILL BE OK THERE IS A GUY ON RU-vid THAT BUILDS ELECTRIC GUITARS USING ONLY HAND TOOLS BECAUSE HE BUILDS OUT OF HIS APARTMENT IN JAPAN AND HE CANT MAKE NOISE. HIS VIDEOS ARE GREAT. BUT YES HAVING POWER TOOLS MAKES THIS PROCESS MUCH EASYER THOUGH STARTING WITH HAND TOOLS WILL GIVE YOU A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF HOW WOOD WORKS. GOOD LUCK, I KNOW I'M NOT FLETCHER BUT BUILDERS MUST STICK TOGETHER.
@zacharycollins6548

For sure. They built stringed instruments by hand for hundreds of years without any power tools. You will need a router though. It will save your life.

I'm making a custom guitar with a 50's fender neck (Forum link: www.tdpri.com/forum/other-guitars-other-instruments/464619-first-guitar-build-ever-ambitious-major-work-project.html) How would you go about routing the neck pocket for such a project? I'm nervous about getting scale lengths and positioning exactly correct, so a guide in any direction would be great help. Cheers, and great videos :)

Hi Justin, Have you watched my Strat build video's yet ?
@joostin123
@joostin123 10 лет назад
***** I have and I was just worried about whether I should build the neck first or the body, as I'm unsure of the depth I'll need to rout in order to have an aligned neck and to eliminate fret buzz and getting the action right. I'm actually aiming to build the neck just like your Fender neck, with a spoke style truss rod.
@FletcherHandcraftedGuitars
@FletcherHandcraftedGuitars 10 лет назад
I'd build the neck first then use that to make your neck pocket template. Your finished neck thickness is 1 inch ( not including frets ) and you route your neck pocket 5/8 inch deep
