There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

Hearing the section on Jack Dorsey in the wake of Elon Musk's takeover is an out of body experience.

Even worse if you're a Hellthread veteran from BlueSky. Jack actually ruined his own Twitter replacement by refusing to allow moderation and then on adding it, it's only opt-out not opt-in and very narrowly focused on adult content only...

9:30 - Just worth a point, "Augustus" also took th ename "Augustus" because that was a previously existing title in Rome. Like "Imperator," he basically went out of his way to try to just make things seem like "Yeah, I mean, this isn't entirely AWAY from the previous rules." Sorta like if a President were to pass an amendment to remove term limits. And then remove the bit about Senators being elected directly. And then declare a state of emergency related to something it would be hard to PROVE had been solved (say, Climate Change, or Immigration, or Terrorism, a vague concept) And then turn the election of Presidents over to the Senate. Rather than what Caesar had done, which was get himself declared "President for Life."

I'm 8 minutes in and Zuck saying that the guy who finished off Rome's republic and turned it to full dictatorship is his hero is like in Watchmen when Ozymandius says that his "hero" is Alexander the Great, and then it's supposed to be a surprise when that guy turns out to be evil? Ancient conquerors are not good role models for billionaires to have. EDIT: I'm 46 minutes in, and Jack Doresey is once again being used as an example of a good social media oligarch, and when he's the good example, you know shit is fucked (see also: Elno Skum.)

It is October 8th 2023, and earlier today Hamas committed a strike on Israel that involved hostages. I don’t know how I feel about their actions or motives, but I do know that the bipartisan response among US politicians is “We back Israel”. Which sounds likely to result in a war that will probably turn into an absolute bloodbath. And I can only imagine the sort of ramifications arguing over this war might have in a presidential election 13 months away most likely between a doddering and useless centrist and the nihilistic maniac we sadly still desperately need his decrepit ass to beat because the world is unlikely to survive a second round of crime-president. And I’m thinking about how the initial reports talk about how Hamas really slipped this all under the radar, that neither American or Israeli intelligence was aware of any signs of this attack, and how it likely couldn’t have succeeded if they were. This attack that will likely result in a massacres and could maybe tip the political scales into human extinction. I’m thinking about this and wondering… did anyone planning this utilize Facebook enough and in such a way that someone at Facebook knew? If they didn’t know, but they maintained proper staff, if they gave a fuck, *would* they have known? Because it sounds like if either was the case, they’d never admit it. Like… people beefing is nothing new. And I don’t know that I WANT a company like Facebook to be coordinating with US intelligence agencies all the time, that I trust either to be responsible with that sort of geopolitical insight… But I do know that, like Sophie, I feel profoundly upset by the fact that there is no coordination or oversight or consequences for Facebook making global atrocities possible because… They just don’t give a fuck.

I just don't understand the concept of placing as much responsibility as a Government on a corporation. Don't get me wrong, I hate the Zuck and have never signed up. But they make a product. If it's used nefariously, that is so not their problem. It's up to a Gov or someone at that point to step in. To imply they have any culpability in any major movement is such a weak cop out of the actual situation. If I make a product that set's me up for life, isn't that the goal? Who would care about the 'world' implications because it really isn't relevant. As much as I hate him, I'd love his cash and I'd sell anything to anyone. It's not the company's problem, basically. I still love your shit, especially products and services.

Interesting self report... Not sure how you can think that and still enjoy listening to this podcast. It kind of goes against the whole point of the show. Does hearing that point of view constantly mocked and denigrated not hurt your listening experience?
