Love your channel so much, you are for me like my neighbor or some family who is working on old cars. The way you are working is for me as somebody who have no clou what you are doing, but the way you explain all these technical things make it understandably for me so it is something i can follow easily. And of course your sense of humor , you remind me sometimes of Tommy Cooper and that is a great compliment !!! I am retired and i did always drive in older cars, like most of them where Citroën like the 2cv, Visa, Cx and Bx and Ax, and i always loved these cars, they where not easy to repair, but when they where running again it give me so much fun ! Sometimes they had more then 500.000 km on the clock and still running !!! Now we, my Husband and I drive a Opel Astra 1.6 station, and we drive many times to England, Wales and Scotland, and we love the UK very much ! No troubles with this car, but i miss the charm of the French cars.... And yes my workplace can be a mess, but sometimes i see the light and start cleaning up and when the job is done i am happy ! Pleas continuing your channel and share many rebuild with us and keep doing things the way you are doing now... and your Shop is looking amazing again ! Greets from The Netherlands !

Just going to weigh in with my tuppence on the extra long cold start issue. The mechanical fuel pump has two non return valves in it and a diaphragm. Usually the valves in the pump are good enough to keep the system primed, particularly if the engine doesn’t normally stop with the pump at the top of the cam. If, however, it does stop right on the toe, the spring in the pump won’t hold any pressure against the inlet valve, so that may not fully seat. Then, over time, the level in the float bowl drops, due to evaporation, allowing the needle valve to open, releasing the tiny amount of pressure in the carb feed. This in turn allows the outlet valve to slightly unseat and hey presto, gravity does the rest. So, if the long start is not ALWAYS a problem after a layup, this is probably what’s going on and it’s not anything wrong as such. It’s just that your engine has got into the habit of stopping in an unhelpful position. Far more likely, however, is that one or both of the valves in the pump is leaky, leading to the same outcome. In either scenario, a good, cheap fix is a non return valve in the line to the carb, preferably close to the carb. If the mechanical pump is on the way out, it will buy you some more time and if it’s the engine usually stopping on cam, it’s a permanent fix. Easy to replace, when it wears out, too. There’s one other possibility, though. If the diaphragm has gone porous, fuel can leak into the sump. On a monster like that you may not notice the oil level rising, particularly if it’s a small leak. If this is the trouble, you really need to change the fuel pump as a matter of urgency. That brings me to possibly the best solution for all the potential reasons for your trouble. Do away with the mechanical pump and fit an electric one. That will prime the system when you turn the key on. Just remember not to walk away and leave the key on with the engine not running. If a pipe falls off, or the float fails, the electric pump will keep trying to prime until something bad happens.

Just watching your latest video, I'm not on social media, don't really care what people think about me. Them sending pictures of their dinner on holiday 🙄 has no interest to me, I'm an amateur tinkerer with 2 90's cinquecentos and a daily kia ceed diesel. I do some other people's cars if they are decent people who may be abit skint, haven't we all been there, also like fixing stuff in the shed and watch RU-vid instead of TV mainly to pick up tips on things and have some banter with some creator's aswell. I do like furious driving as he's willing to give things a go and has made real progress over the years. For me if it has an engine I'm interested so that's what I usually watch. Just happened to see your channel about a year ago and some of the basket cases you repair are worth a watch. Didn't watch the last 3 hour video.... yet as haven't had 3 hours to sit down lately. Best wishes to you and your other half with the channel 👍🇮🇪

32:00 back in the day you could tell if a car showing 22,000 miles was 122,000 because it was usually clapped out by then - smoking and rattling. Cars didn't seem to last to high mileages like they can today. Or if they did, you could really tell. My first car was a 7 year old Datsun. It had 70,000 miles on it and had holes in the floor, wings, bonnet, doors etc - at 7 years old.

Look, getting my arse to the NEC classic show is usually driven by going to see someone/thing: 2yrs ago it was Ian and Carley at Hub Nut - so if you set up a stall this year (2024) consider me there. I even made it from Leeds to a swelteringly hot Arley Hall just to see the Panhard! Today I spent most of the afternoon replacing 3 of the 5 engine mounts on the XC70. It is now smooth as .... something-that-is-acceptable-but-could-be-a-bit-smoother-if-I-replaced-the-remaining-two-really-expensive-mounts. I was listening to Ian a few days ago ago and he was talking about being in your "happy place". For me, that is making a car that was once poorly/ not running right, and turning it into something "much better" .... give me a bucket of tools and some spare parts and I'm in heaven. ..... Q) is April at all interested in cars, could she assist with the NEC booking?

I have a classic with a mechanical fuel pump and it holds fuel fine now. I did have some problems as you described, if the fuel tank was allowed to drop below a certain level. I went through the whole system (it's simple admittedly) and found hardened brittle fuel hose and a 90 degree bend (where there should've been a metal or plastic 90 deg. piece) that was ruptured and letting air in! I was glad l took the difficult route rather than risk a roadside breakdown or fire!

When I've finished watching you tidy your garage, I might get motivated to tidy mine, that is only a might, though.😊

Good fun video. Here in Australia I have an 1983 Ford Falcon XE. My daily driver is a 2016 Ford Territory (unique to Australia and New Zealand powered by a similar 2.7 Diesel to your Disco.

Buy a soldering pot that you melt bars of solder into and dip your copper lead ends into it prior to fitting the terminals on - makes an absolutely beautiful job of it.

I don't follow you on socials as they're evil, but love the channel. 1970 Citroen D Super, on the street, driven a couple of times a month at least.

Think the idea of the live show is a brilliant idea, you could do it at the British Motor show from what my son tells me it was rubbish this year, you would really make it interesting. Have you thought about going down to the motor mart at Beaulieu, excellent place to go especially if you are after parts for older cars. 👍

Your videos are so relaxing, wish we had a neighbour like you who loves cars. Our daily “modern classic” is a UK, 1990 Toyota Celica GT4, black…well a “sunnyday” daily 😅. Our other car is an 2020, Audi A8, also in black. Been on a few road trips in it 😊. The car restoration on stage sounds like a lot of fun!
