CBS News Miami's Ted Scouten speaks with passengers on Flight 270, which was was forced to turn around while flying toward Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport after suffering a mechanical failure.
The most terrifying thing is that in a water landing, as the plane is filling with water, you would be waiting in a line for the emergency exit while people tried to get their stuff out of overhead bins. Then a fight or two would break out because somebody felt disrespected.
@@TrentAdam You would think, but there’s actually been more than a few flights with emergency deplaning where passengers grabbed their luggage before they left. That is why flight crews are so adamant about leaving your belongings. British Airways Flight 268, Asiana Flight 214, Delta Airlines Flight 1086, and Emirates Flight 521 are all examples of passengers prioritizing their luggage over lives.
@@2WheelsGood.01 Yup. In "The Miracle on the Hudson" crash in 2009, the plane floated for over 25 minutes before starting to sink. The actual scary part about water landings is that they are way harder than land-based landings and so the planes usually break up on impact. Scully and Skiles worked together as an amazing team to pull off a rare, successful, water landing. I imagine if the landing had been in the ocean where waves are much larger, the outcome would have been quite different.
They all don’t understand that technically the pilot had a responsibility to tell them to prepare for a water landing because that’s the worst possible outcome
@@FloridaMan69.Why? There was a mechanical issue and the pilot were still able to land the plane safely and prepare people in the event that they could not make it back to the runway. There was no negligence.
About 110 people in the USA die in ground based motor vehicle crashes EVERY DAY but there isn't much coverage because it happens so frequently. Commercial aircraft incidents are pretty rare and ad a result, get lots of coverage.
The odds are so so so so so so so so so so so very low 1 in 15 million of getting in a plane crags and nearly 100% of surviving one. And you are much more like to die on the stairs. Much much more likely. And the reason you are sacred is from the news because they spread false information all the time. Especially about aviation.
@@scothf1273 The last fatality in a US commercial airline was in 2009 when a small commuter jet went down in icing conditions, this was 49 + 1 on the ground.
@@helenpauls1496 Yes....I said this in another comment. If I was aboard, I would have thanked pretty much everyone...especially the pilot as my spouse is one, so I understand what it takes to maintain composure in difficult situations.
I was taking my family on a Disney cruise Vacation and wanted to save money on the flights and booked spirit. Spirit ended up cancelling my flight the day before my cruise because of "mechanical failure" and refused to rebook me on a flight that would get me to the ship on time. I had to buy a one way ticket for my whole family just to make the cruise. After seeing this video , I'm glad they didn't take off and that it got cancelled.
Remembering to pray when there is trouble. Fighting and cussing when things are going well. Why file a complaint? Planes are man-made. Despite the best efforts things break. Yes you were traumatized. But is complaining the only response? Think of the crew. I doubt the pilot wanted the drama!!
Exactly ! Thank god for the pilot who was able to return and keep them safe! People always complaining 🙄 they should be thankful they are alive ! I never flight with spirit, but that is because I find better prices and route with JetBlue… i don’t even use delta…I used to work with mechanical engineers and they told me once if I knew how those plane engines flight I would never get on a plane and they were laughing about it … also they told me the more difficult and dangerous time during a flight is during the 15-20 min after takeoff and before landing 🛬
Imagine that. Not grateful enough that the plane landed safely now you want to sue. Celebrate that you survived to live another day. Is this because of a mechanical issue or a life vest issue? I don’t see any negligence here, but it didn’t happen to me. She panicked because she couldn’t open the life vest and rightfully so during a traumatic event. If everyone on board had this same experience then maybe there could be a class action law suit. 🤷♀️ idk. Glad everyone is safe and okay.
@@JayJayAviation Didn’t you hear? Lots of folks are now bonafide aviation experts since they watched a few recent news videos about Boeing. Crazy how thousands of flights occur every single day and land safely without issue, but I never see any of these expert’s commentary on those. Odd.
Wow - Not single comment about how grateful they are for the professional pilots landing the plane safely despite a potential mechanical issue. Just wow. Instead complaints and complaint to the Department of Transportation. I am sure there were many announcements along the way. And those ladies will float even without a life jacket on. Was it a bit scary, sure, but where is the gratitude? SMH
Hopefully they'll be those who do give many Thanks and recognition to the flight crew, although people have gotten greedier and greedier, it's a shame 😢
Another critical comment. When should the pilot get the passengers into life jackets and have the doors ready to open and deploy life boat ramps? The answer is as soon as the mechanical issue looks probable and an emergency is declared. They were scared? Stupid people. Flights crash
Because they were in the air in a place where, if they had to make an emergency landing, it would've been into water. You need to prepare the passengers for the thing that might actually happen, not what won't happen. If you prepare for a land landing and you land in the water, you're likely to drown. If you prepare for a water landing and land on land, you get out onto the ground wearing a life vest - no big deal. But the likelihood of water landing was greater than anything else, and would've afforded the passengers their best chance of survival if they couldn't make the runway. A lot needs investigated, but not what they asked the passengers and crew to prepare for.
Because the DOT is only going to investigate the incident itself - not the fact that passengers weren't able to retrieve or use the mandatory safety equipment on the aircraft in the exact kind of emergency in which it needs to be accessible. If you don't report that, they don't investigate it. You can only fix problems you know about.
Okay and? The pilots may have thought that they might not be able to make it back and given the lower altitude, just wanted to make sure the passengers were prepared for the worst outcome. Why do people look at these situations with the power of hindsight without even realizing they are? It reminds me of the many people who ask “Why didn’t ATC cancel all flights after the first plane struck the WTC?”… When it was obvious that they didn’t know what was going on at the time like we do now. People need to ‘woulda, coulda, shoulda’ into some perspective for a change.
And they would not have been ready for a possible water landing. What is more important, that they remain chill or prepare for a possible emergency? What if they landed on the water which was a real possibility and they were just chillin and not ready for it? Use your head
I flew in spirit from BWI to Montego Bay it is an extremely bumpy ride sometimes also pilots have to deal with a lot of crosswind with the approach to Montego Bay it’s basically the wins of the golf of Mexico in the Atlantic Ocean meet
I know the passengers were very scared and panicked. But the pilots did the right thing by having them prepared for an emergency water landing.. it was better to be prepared for a water landing and land on land than to expect a landing on land and wind up in the water. The main thing is that everyone survives whatever happens. Kudos for taking extra precautions.
Some of these folks on the plane probably needed a "wake up call " in that , life is short, and to be grateful for what you have, don't take anything for granted and tell someone you love them every day, even if its your pet 😺🐶🐴🐹🐄🐦
You take a risk when you fly along with ANYTHING and EVERYTHING else you do in life. Mechanical things and such, anything can happen at any time. It's scary but that's life. But Americans, we will file complaints and SUE for anything. How about thanking the Pilot for landing safely to start with.
Right, the lady talking about all the trauma had to have gotten on another flight 😅 the news person said that she said it would be awhile before she flys again, but apparently they all got a flight back to Fort L.😅 anyway guess just glad they're ok
Curious on how often the life vest are inspected? Glad everyone is okay but take aside this being a spirit (budget airline) with all these recent plane and flight issues so many safety concerns are coming to light
Oh boy, I'm slated to go on my first ever flight in July and wouldnt be going but need to see my 2 grandkids. I've considered the risk and only know that if the plane crashes, the screaming and crying would be the worst part. I dont want to die in utter fear and panic around me. What's the point of screaming at that point?
There’s a very low chance of you being involved in a plane crash, I’ve flown transatlantic many times, and I have NEVER had anything bad happen. Relax, it’s fine.
Airline maintenance has certainly changed over the years. Especially with these budget airlines. Everyone is chasing the dollar, not to say this was the issue. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was.
…no mention of what the mechanical issue was. There aren’t too many problems that would compel me to make a water landing announcement to the passengers.
It’s called safety people. I don’t think any of those passengers were in dangerous. Pilot had to alert the crew of what could’ve have happen. Be thankful you landed safe
@@HuplesCatIt's not the passenger's responsibility to land the plane safely, genius. It's the pilots. You don't sound too smart, but I think even you know that.
Ditching a jet liner in the ocean usually comes with some fatalities. I don’t blame them for being nervous. Since they did land safely, thanks to the crew, they should at least be given a refund for their travel and perhaps a discount for future travel. Their case is not worth millions though. Sh-t happens, and they can be thankful they are safe and alive.
Now everyone wants to pray. We love to forget God until we really need Him. God is merciful! Glad they are all okay and no one was injured. You got to be ready at any moment. Life is here today and gone tomorrow. You must be born again to enter the Kingdom of God. There is no more repentance after death. John 3:5 and Acts 2:38. Be blessed!
Number one rule in an emergency- Dont panic. Number two rule follow the emergency instructions. .... New rule: go to church. Thank God. We dont know when "that time" is. Be ready for that also.
You struggle to get them because you do not pay attention during the safety demostration and when the real deal comes, no one knows how to get a life jacket 😅
It is a machine and maschines break. If the engine had an internal malfunction, maintenance would not have seen that during a normal walk around inspection. Why is everyone so quick and blame maintenance ? We give 150 % trying to keep the aircraft airworthy yet get all the heat when something breaks. We are mechanics, not fortune tellers.
file a complaint? department of transportation is well aware of the incident. Yeah, that’s got to be the end of your life if the plane lands in the Atlantic Ocean. It won’t be like landing in the Hudson River. Better than landing on a house or in a forest. You might survive it.
Traumatized for what??? The pilot landed the plan safely, there will be no lawsuit lol. Some passengers are delusional, you book the flight, then expect the unexpected, as long as the flight lands safely, that's all there is to it
They should be grateful to be alive and yet after they "survived" its time to file a complaint and probably sue the company to get some $$$. Some people are fcked up
Try yawing in sideways in a squall and smashing the runway hard enough to have to switch planes and taking off in the same storm. Get out of here with your warning scare
Plane ticket: $300 Cruise: $200 per day since a cruise from Florida to Jamacia takes 2 days means 400 dollars plus tax soo you rather take a plane or ship? I'm taking the cruise bro
Ok, *who let Sully fly the plane* Besides that half the people in this comment section don’t even understand what’s happening. It’s not a Boeing, it’s an Airbus.
Rule number one say the hall away from spirit me and my wife took that yellow bus to FL and we had our experience with them if you have the money to fly a little extra do it
Look if it had a water landing they would all end up on some magical island with polar bears roaming around, a lethal smoke monster and mysterious hostiles local to the place defending the island. Six seasons later you find out everyone is dead anyway.
@@TheSafierdrgn yup. I just went through it a second time. It’s still a great show. The ending isn’t wonderful. I’m not sure how else they could have ended it in a way that tied up everything.
When I flew on airlines in Europe constantly I noticed that the airline pilots were SUPURB with Turbulence, landing and arrival times. Never experienced anything like this. But this is the NORM in the USA 🇺🇸. I’ve experienced the worst turbulence on Airlines in America. I once flew out of Denver during a snow storm and they had to melt the ice off the plane ✈️ and the runway: once we ascended above the Rocky Mountains it felt like we were going to crash, the turbulence was insane, people were screaming, crying, yelling and I said my last prayer. 🙏 It lasted about a half an hour before we Cleared it and landed in Las Vegas.
Welcome to US, that is actually normal for flights over or near Rocky Mountains. I once saw wings bend up and down so much most people on the plane thought it was going to break. As an aviation engineer, I knew we were no where near the breaking point, but I was kind of in a panic mode as well.
