Siglent have sent me their SPD3303X programmable power supply and as expected it is very nice. In this video I am showing a few of its features, suggesting new firmware features and testing its output ripple under load.

Absolutely go for it! I'd love a cheap 4-quadrant source, and I'd love it even more if I could buy it in kit form, or just a bare board and a BOM.

Great Idea - I am in! Especially the combination of a power supply together with a simple wave form generator is what I am looking for, for a long time! As a hobbyist, space is always an issue...

Great idea! Make it tough too. I have a variety of hobbies that use DC power (3D printing, automotive, aluminum anodizing, hobby electronics) and having one power supply that can cover all these bases would save me so much money. 30 vdc @ 10 amps covers 95% of the projects I do.

I bought the Siglent SPD3303X-E which is very similar this one. Siglent seems to be the best bang for the buck currently as I have also bought other equipment from Siglent after exhaustive comparisons with other manufacturers.

Great idea! Insanely great idea! 3 channels (+/- 30V, 10A each?!) I instantly paused the video when I saw the quadrant. I watched the last 2 minutes 3 times! I would love to see lots of videos for this project. What if it also had an ADC for external input that we could use to correlate things?! We could measure motor torque, temperature, and lots of other things in relation to power.

I have rigged together SMU style source before.. The Keithley 236 Schematic was my best friend :D Shouldn't be all that expensive when you dump all the low current stuff under 1uA and compromise on accuracy and resolution. Looking forward to your take on it, I went with several linear PSUs and the analog ground "floating" on the output positive just like Keithley did.

Maybe I missed it, but I couldn't see any mention about improvements to the binding posts, compared to the teardown on Dave's EEVBlog. The "loosy-goosy" fit and the wrong horizontal distance of the + and - posts are definitely quite significant disadvantages.

Idea of programmable ( ideally opensource ) high-quality 4Q PSU is great, but maybe it would be better to scope only on high-quality PSU and nothing more. Build 4Q function generator as extension for 4Q PSU ( requiring 4Q PSU for supply ) would have several advantages 1) not everybody wants to have 4Q function generator at all 2) some want to have more than one 4Q function generator connected with phase sync and some common potential ( 3p / stepper motor testing anyone ?) 3) it is more probable to success building simple and always looked-for product than something complicated. Advanced power supply unit is always interesting device for every electronician no matter how many and how good power supplies are already on his desk. I wish you ( and am awaiting ) THE SUCCESS! regards, T.

The sink could be used to characterize the PSU, so it should be a double win. As far as I see it, there are many capable power supplies but little (affordable) innovation on the load side.

Most day to day use would be as a bench power supply. I'd say that it's worth the complexity cost for the lower temperature regular operation.

I think I'd enjoy a kit if you'd make one available for your osmu! I like my (garage sale find!) BK Precision 1670 power supply just fine, but multi-channel (beyond the fixed 5V and 12V lines combined with the one variable channel) at least sounds nice... There sure are a lot of chips/things (display panels, etc) that insist on careful power sequencing...

When will the BBBB V3 come out? I made my own The Big Blue Bidirectional Brushless Brutality Beast It is 4800W 48V 3 phase industrial grade induction motor that is pretty slow but has plenty of torque. Had to use a massive driver for it. But it removes screws very good. Especially with a linear carbon based milling bit

Since my e-bike battery (and other power electronics) are moving to 10S LiPo, may I kindly suggest raising the SMU voltage limit to ~42V? Or at least leave a provision for 60V. I'm having a hard time finding affordable gear for that voltage and amperage (100-500W). For sourcing I could only come up with series power supplies. For loads, RC ESCs. If you're feeling courageous, also audio amplifiers might work for a second or so.

It looks like changes in the voltage and current ranges will be pretty easy, needing no more than a different set of transistors and voltage dividers, so even mixing 3 different channels in one device is possible!

MISTER my comment was aimed at the inevitable happening that the circuit design will be reverse engineered and copied, often very cheaply. It was commented that is this not open source? My opinion is no,this is not open source ,rather I consider open source to refer to the access to the coding and programming and the ability of the end user to customise this to suit their needs,at no purchase cost?ie they are given open and free access to the source coding.

If you need a custom transformer supplier for your project, I've used toroidy.pl before and I can recommend them. They custom wound me a 225VA line transformer for around 60-70 euros as a one off about 5 years ago (can't remember if that's before or after tax) and as they're in the EU, it's a lot faster than ones in China an you don't pay any import tax. They do audiophile transformers but you can get a basic model that skips all the features you don't need like encapsulation. That's if you were thinking of keeping it linear. However for the power you describe you'll probably have to go to a switching converter, the complexity of which will probably be too much for you. I started something similar at 3 channels of 40V 4A, 10mV/1mA precision with active PFC, linear output regulators and tracking switching pre-regulators, but even with my experience of switching power supplies, I never finished it.
