I don't think Leonard was retarded. They said he started out as a maintenance man. He probably just had zero ambition and was content being a maintenance man for decades. Eventually he got too old to do all that manual labor but no one wanted to fire him so they kept him on as a bus boy.
Also consider this. I have 2 friends that are "store managers" one at Dunkin Donuts, the other at Wendys. They both went from making 9 an hour to salary. Now they make 550 and 600 a week respectively but they both work OVER 50 hours a week. Do the math. Being a manager is good for the pay but you have to do waaay more work and waaay more hours for that extra money
