Reich’s argument is not that people shouldn’t be able to make a lot of money, it’s that these corporations make billions of dollars in profits while most of their workers are living check to check. Anyone who can’t see the evil in that is not human. Crony capitalism steals workers time and money for crumbs in return. I guarantee those NBA players you are talking about are paying all those who work for them great money! It’s time to reimagine the system willingly or it will be done forcefully through revolt.

the performance of a NBA Player (and even more for a speaker) is much easier and more reliable to measure than of a CEO. I made an apprenticeship in a big Swiss Bank. The CEO at this time was the first one to make as much money as an US Ceo. It was a bit of scandal in Switzerland because the culture despises is as greed (just too much..). Now i was in training there where we talked about it - they said its ok because of his performance (stock value) and the hight amount of responsibility. In the end he nearly bankrupted the bank (it had to be saved by the swiss government) and he never had to pay back one penny of his high bonuses which rewarded his "performance" and "responsibility". CEOs and Managers are not entrepreneurs which take big risks personally.

I would argue there has been a lot more of a push to embrace capitalism than not to in the U.S. It's usually because it benefits rich people. Like people get outraged when you want to raise taxes on them, which works in their favor, but then when they raise taxes on people no one really gets outraged. It is weird. It is like when you tell right wing people they deserve better pay and healthcare and they get mad at you.

My question was always, who's going to start these companies? You're not going to get 500 people together who all have a passion for making widget x. Even if you did, not everybody is going to be happy with the same wage as everyone else. There's more to it of course, but it has been several years since I watched the program

College tuition is a perfect example of what happens when we shy away from capitalism. Tuition went up 1500% due to government intervention not because the market demands 1500% more. Then they want to "forgive" your loans while still writing studen loans on inflated tuition prices.
@jordaniel21
@jordaniel21 Год назад
Lol what? The reason tuition is at all time high is because of capitalism. Universities found a loophole that lets them capitalistic principle to act like businesses. If you ever step foot in administration for any of these universities you’ll discover they try to maximize profit by implementing all these unnecessary yet necessary expenses. If universities worked like they do in socialist Europe they would be run like community colleges meaning less expense but greater value for your education. Capitalism runs every part of our society, some parts are beneficiary, but universities are the wrong example to give.
@Mr.Rogers91
@Mr.Rogers91 Год назад
@@jordaniel21 college was always a business. If you weren't guaranteed a loan for college they wouldn't be able to inflate prices. Imagine if we had private loans still and you had to prove to the bank you could pay back the loan. We wouldn't have everyone taking out loans and just "figuring it out" as they submerge themselves into 10s of thousands sometimes 100s of thousands in debt. The fact it government back guaranteed loans for any amount is what allows them to charge these insane prices.

I think PBD brings up some good points regarding Reich's hypocrisy.... I guess my issue with the point he's making is that he fails to address the staggering income inequality that has taken place in the US since the late 1970s. He is right that the country is richer today, but the life of an individual in the lower middle class is much worse. Of course, not everyone can be a successful entrepreneur. Additionally, with education being so expensive how can the average person in this class escape this trap? While Reich may be a hypocrite he does seem to acknowledge how much income inequality has affected the average person since the late 70s and does seem to legitimately want to make the lives of the lower and middle classes better.

A agree with both of you; a lot of CEO's especially in the last 40 years, have taken advantage of globalization and financial engineering. They did not create real value but improved profits by outsourcing and buying back shares, increasing profits by cutting wages, which was positive for the company but an overall negative for US . Now demographics will make it harder to do so, and all the companies that did not innovate or invest will suffer, but the CEOs will walk away with all their money. For the CEOs who provide the true value, they should get paid proportional to what they contributed and the risk they took

@lamcho00
@lamcho00 Год назад
@@ramprasath3346 Ok at least now you are trying to portray a point. But believe me you can't win an argument like that. Have you ever considered the individual might see the bigger picture and thus vote for more government power? Like everybody paying taxes so you can have cheap education or police protection? You'd be surprised how much you'd have to pay if there was no police or the government didn't subsidize food production. You also fail to understand how current government or even capitalism work. Capitalism requires inflation (via central banks) not to get into a deflationary spiral. Capitalism requires permanent unemployment level backed by the government in order to get cheap labor. Capitalism requires government bodies to prevent monopolism in order to work. Capitalism can't exist without a government, but I bet Patrick won't tell you that. Instead he'll be telling you how capitalism is freedom to choose and socialism is just forcing you to do stuff against your will. He'll tell you how your personal chose and vote are really important for democracy, but that choice evaporates once you get to the workplace. I'm not a communist and I'm not against the free market. I like owning stuff. Though to keep the market free you need the government. If you'd really start to think critically about those things, you'd see that every nation is a mix of public and private ownership. Your argument is still invalid. Even socialist states like the USSR had private property, just not over land. But they could own their own house or car or whatever else. The bad thing about capitalism is everyone is rent seeking and the system allows for it. It allows for people to live of the work of other people just by owning things like land or tools which they can lend to someone who's doing actual work. I want to remove that part of the equation. No need for people living on the back of others just because they own capital. This is not just crony capitalism, it's the system itself which allows for this to happen. That's why it needs to be changed or protected via more government interventions.

Also with the tax argument, hasn’t it been shown that with all the tax loopholes, they really don’t pay their fair share? Yes more taxes because they employ people but again, PBD was not addressing the main topic of the tweet. Disingenuous argument. Just like how Robert R. was making $100k/hr and how that’s more money than 99% of CEO’s, disingenuous to put his income at $100k/he when he probably gives a handful of speeches a year at that price.

Capitalist here, basketball revenues have increased as exponentially more eyeballs are able to watch the game. While there are certainly some massive tech innovations, creating services on scales not seen in 1978, skewing Robert's statistics, wealth inequality at the CEO has drastically increased due to secular decreasing interest rates and regulatory moats that can be exploited to stamp out competition. What Robert does not realize is that these are BECAUSE OF GOVERNMENT involvement in our economy. So his socialist solutions will only make inequality worse as those with political connections are guaranteed more market share. The reason I bring up this clarification is that the Patrick's defense is taking is a common one and pretends wealth inequality is not an issue as opposed to rightfully placing the blame at the feet of government (Federal Reserve for lower interest rates which boosts the share prices of public companies and various regulatory bodies that prevent competition - like the FDA in the case of pharmaceuticals).

As you may know there is a limit where once you as an employee makes that amount in wages the social security deduction stops for him and his employer. Here is my idea. Remove the limit for employers once the employee in question makes the target amount, but the employee still keeps paying into social security with no limit. I hope that you see this. I do enjoy your videos.

If the CEO of Intel split their net compensation equally among the rest of the workforce, just forfeited their entire compensation package, healthcare, stock, bonds, securities etc. Converted it all to cash at 100% efficiency, then divided it up evenly among all of Intel’s employees, they’d get a grand total of $552.72 in additional yearly salary. Significant? Yes. Significant enough to dramatically improve most people’s quality of life? Probably not. I mean $500 is a lot of money but I wouldn’t call it a huge raise either.

I am a fan of "the free market". I understand "economies of scale" which increases efficiencies as these businesses generally increase in size. My challenge sounds like it is similar to your in I have issue with how large corporations are allowed to lobby government and how they are allowed to become effective monopolies or combines which defeats the point of a free market system. I believe this is the impetus for much of the push for socialism from the average individual who toils yet has not seen a wage increase in decades; while their tax dollars are going to making it easier for many major corporations make crazy profits. The scale is out of balance and increases the potential for a major uprising. When the pendulum swings too far one way, it swings back the other hard and fast.

Its far more complex than that, all Capitalist models are broken. Reality check, all ISM's are dead and need to be replaced. AI, robotics and other technological gains will only hasten the death of our current models. How we respond to the changes coming will define whether changes are peaceful or not. But let's not kid ourselves that rich people are going to want the changes, it's like Kings or Barons accepting that Feudalism is passing for Industrialisation. The Wealthy are going to lie, scream and try to corrupt anything that see's the current system passing. It is the nature of Human beings. But the changes are coming, and the current system will have to go. This includes Capitalism, as technology re-writes economics and the need for Human labour is greatly diminished. Expect a UBI within a decade as a 1st step to prevent Social Disorder from exploding as Capitalism crumbles.

Hey Pat, do you know that in California the minimum wage in 1974 was to $2.00 prr hour and since then has increased roughly 500%? I love capitalism, but we should be concerned of the life conditions that people at the bottom can afford with 11 bucks per hour.

Very great points Pat and I believe this is genuinely one of the only arguments that "pro communist" people have no retort for. How do you vehemently oppose a system only to benefit from it when it suits you?
@cornoc
@cornoc Год назад
while there is the appearance of hypocrisy in criticizing a system that benefits you, what would be the purpose of refusing large sums of money being offered to you even if you disagree with the aggregate effects of the system you oppose? with more money, you have more influence and resources to cause change. maybe the change he advocates for would reduce his income, and maybe he's okay with that as long as the end result is the average person doing a little better than they are now. or maybe he's a total hypocrite, but if the end result is popularizing ideas that benefit the masses, what does it matter? note that this issue is more or less entirely separate from the question of whether his ideas would actually improve people's lives overall.

It's the distribution Patrick!! - it's the distribution of wealth- that's the point he's trying to make and you're dodging it.. Everytime the argument made to increase the minimum wage there's a push back from conservative saying "if you want more pay then go back to school and get a degree to get a better job" ... but the problem with that is that you go back to school get that degree that would subsequently get you better pay- but now you have a student loan debt that is now attached to your ankle like a ball and chain.. What's worse is when you get said degree the capitalist minded business CEO wanna low ball you with a salary not matching what you're worth.. so now you have a student loan debt along with your necessary needs debt to contented with- which subsequently puts you right back where you were before getting said degree.. New York passed a salary transparency bill last week- to force employers to post the salary along with the employment ad.. the real question is WHY DOES THE GOVERNMENT HAS TO PASS A BILL FOR SOMETHING SO OBVIOUS? 🤔 employers were manipulating that game for yrs - ever since Reagan and his reaganomic policy - the money has never trickle down to the employees (that's doing the heavy lifting) as the policy was intended.. Robert Reich is only pushing for a fair living wage for the middle and lower classes (regardless of how much HE makes per speech) it tell me that, while he has climb up the wealth ladder ,he want others below him to prosper as well- many of the top earners don't give a crap about the folks below them (especially their workers) I respect Robert Reich for speaking up for the little people... capitalism is a good thing but only if it's done fairly- its is being manipulated today to the worse of mankind - near corruption! I watched a billionaire donate millions to their alma mater (which already has millions in endowment) while their employees are earning minimum wage and having high out of pocket cost for their medical insurance.. I would think said billionaire would take care of their employees 1st before making record donations to a university.. that's just one of many examples but I'll leave it their.. P/S : before the pandemic, cost of living grew 3% per yr, while average wage increases a measly .09% Just imagine if average wage would increase at the same pace as cost of living? (Maybe you wouldn't have so many people homeless or on public assistance 🤔) But it's a system intentionally set up that way to have people chasing that cheese that they would never capture - and it also keeps the citizens in control and dependent (that goes for both parties) Republican screw the citizens via corporations(they will always point fingers at the corporations when policies fail instead of themselves- no accountability) while the Democrats screw the citizens by way of hope that never come to fruition (promises to cancel student loan debt just to get in office) 😢
