Great video Buffalo! As a HUGE shotgun fan I love these type videos. Federal Flite Control is what we use on duty here in CA and it’s such an impressive shell it’s what I use in my HD shotguns. Be safe out there! -OG, the Taufledermaus Channel.

I was surprised too, I was figuring that the Flite Control wad would make a big difference but never guessed that buffering would matter so much.

The little things make a huge difference. The wads used, the buffer compound, and the hardness of the shot all contribute to the pattern size. Thanks for watching. If you have any ideas for more pattern tests let me know as these videos are fairly easy for to produce and I enjoy them.

Thanks for the video Buffalo! I would normally use slugs for home defense, but I have to worry about over penetration so Buckshot it is. It was a great help for you to show us the differences between brand names, shot size, and pattern......cause those three things can change quite a bit.

Some interesting things I've learned from handloading buckshot in 12 and 16 Gauge: My loads, which are taken directly from the Lyman manual and use standard one-piece plastic wads with petals, have surprisingly tight patterns which are fairly comparable to Flite Control. This is unintentional, it simply occurs naturally. Factory buffered loads have even and well distributed patterns, but notably wider. Unbuffered factory loads with only a shot cup have much more randomly distributed patterns. Sometimes they string vertically, sometimes horizontally, sometimes a group of pellets will clump together, with an occasional pellet flying very wide of the rest of the pattern. I don't know exactly what it means, but the results of all the different loads are very consistent regardless of gun or barrel length, with barrels ranging from 7 1/2" up to 28". Choke seems to have little to no effect on buckshot in general. I do not know what adding buffer would do. The manual specifically and strongly warns that buffer should not ever be added to any load which doesn't list it in the components.

Glad to know the Flight Control stuff isn't just smoke without fire. I think I would stick with nonbuffered buck for most applications unless I really needed to get a buck at the foot at twenty yards. Even so, inside a house, you have something of a rifle when using a shotgun. Thanks so much for the shoutout. Maybe, you will find out how much the 410 slug will penetrate, given how much I love that little round.

I have a huge surplus of dud 20ga #3 buck shells that were given to me (55gal drum full). I handload a 12ga 3 1/4 dram 22 pellet #3 and get 12" groups at 40yds with a standard birdshot wad 18" cylinder bore which is quite impressive. If only federal sold those shot cups separate i could really throw them out there.

I'm pretty sure most of the observable difference was in the shot cup, rather than the buffer. Buffer helps, but its effect is much slighter than shotcup design and pellet hardness.

Never really got why Federal thinks their flitecontrol wad is so cool, indoors it seems pretty useless, and outdoors I can do better with a hog choke and 000 buck. For the house the 3” super X gives a real nice 15 pellet pattern at 10 yards or less. Great job buffalo!! (hoping to test some rem 8 pellet 000 buck soon, it was killing it at 50 yards from an IC out of my Mossy).

I doubt that you're using an IC choke, with regular buckshot loads, and beating the Federal Flight Control ammo. I've shot them all, and this stuff is the best! Especially using an IC, like you stated. I can't touch this stuff, and I've tried 8 different choke sizes, with several different types of ammo. I always go back to the Flight Control. Hell, it doesn't even start leaving the wad, until it's 8-10 yards down range. lol If you can out pattern it, I would like to see you do it.....

Nice vid. I always wanted to know what the difference was. I live in a concrete jungle in the west coast (cough cough) Dont really need a shotgun or really have the a good place to practice. I do have a question for ya..If you could have only one all around shotgun for home defense and little hunting what would you choose and what gauge? I just want your opinion. No right or wrong just a honest opinion for a city slicker who dont know much about shotguns.. Thanks and keep up the great work!
@buffalosoutdoors
@buffalosoutdoors 6 лет назад
One shotgun for hunting and home defense. Well it would need to be a 12 gauge since you can get light loads to make it perform like a 20 if need be or shoot heavy magnum loads when needed so I'd want a 3" chamber. I would probably go with a pump action. It would need to accept screw in choke tubes for different types of hunting. A 24" or 26" barrel would be a compromise between home defense and hunting. Sorry for the rambling I am thinking out loud... I would probably just keep it simple and go with a Mossberg 500 that fits those requirements. Great question by the way. Thank you.
