Today we look at a head to head comparison of 5 different 9 pellet buckshot loads. The purpose of this video is to demonstrate the pattern/ spread performance of each load and determine the maximum safe/effective range out of a typical 12 gauge 18.5 home defense shotgun.
Magpul SGA stock for the Mossberg 500/590/maverick 88
amzn.to/3PLLCtv
Loads in order of appearance-
Winchester Super X 00 9pellet Buck 1325fps.
Federal Power Shok 00 9 pellet Buck 1350fps.
Fiocchi Defense Dynamics 00 9 pellet Buck 1250fps.
Winchester Defender 00 9 pellet copper plated Buck 1145fps
Federal Flitecontrol 00 9 pellet copper plated Buck 1145fps.

Super X performed fine.The entire paper you have your circle drawn on is half your body width, all 9 pellets stayed in the paper! Perfectly acceptable accuracy for defense purposes!

I’m a firm believer of patterning (an sighting in) a shotgun for whatever load you plan on using. Every load doesn’t have the same POI with the same shotgun. Whatever you decide to use, know your POI for it and adjust accordingly. Thank you for the good information.

When I saw you're from Texas, I knew it could be better than the ones from New Hampshire I sat through, or the one from New Jersey with the guy at a range with people from the hood in the background looking down the barrel of a loaded Keltec while his buddy tries to chamber a round with his finger inside the trigger guard. I was right, you have a useful video, thanks for creating and posting it here. I just bought a new Benelli and wanted to become more current on the newest shotshells. I'm your neighbor over here in Missouri.

There's nothing wrong with the Winchester pattern. My shotgun is for home defense and 99% of shots in my house would be within 5 yards. If I'm outside, I'm grabbing the .300 Blackout and not limiting my range to 40 yards with a shotgun.
@bluestatepaine
@bluestatepaine 3 месяца назад
Ok why though? You could have a shotgun that will be easily effective out to 40 yards, and has less of a chance of sending off a flyer that kills the kid or something

The Fiocchi actual performed almost as good as the flite control considering the POI versus POA diff that could have been adjusted on your red dot. And the Fiocchi has more fps and would hit harder. Then ya throw in it cost 20 bucks for a box of 25 fiocchi versus 10 bucks a box ( if you can find it at that price ) for a box of 5 Flite control LE. Just saying..... I will be picking up some Fiocchi at midsouth for 19.99 a bx of 25.
@prudentcitizentraining
@prudentcitizentraining 2 года назад
The Fiocchi is probably the best choice for home defense. In my particular circumstances, I'm looking for maximum effective/ ethical range. After making this video, I was able to get ahold of some LE 8 pellet Flitecontrol. Which I was able to get 9" patterns with, at 35 yards. My 590 is now loaded with the 8 pellet, which I made another video on here-. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yAiwRcQLQ5Y.html Fiocchi Defense Dynamics is definitely good to go, for most defensive purposes. Being able to afford to train with your carry ammo is a big plus.

Several years ago the Federal Government tested various shotgun loads to determine the "best" load for self defense purposes for Federal agencies to use. Their conclusion, if you think they knew what they were doing, was that in all the various conditions a shotgun could be used in an armed incident was to use a 27-pellet, #4 nickel-plated buckshot at 1325fps. load. Fiocchi makes this exact loading in 10-round boxes if you'd like to get some for use. I've had that load in my SD shotty for a long time. Luckily I've never needed to test its effectiveness, but I feel confident it would easily do the job.

Beautiful landscape where u r shooting:) Any fish in that pond? lol. seriously, looks like a sportsman's paradise. Btw, you're talking "home defense" here right? Testing at up to 20 yards? Jeez, how long are your hallways? LOL.. Lastly, I carried a 590 mil version back in the VN days, shooting 00 buck was darned effective in the boonies. As for accuracy, well we used to talk "minute of Pie Plate" ;)
@prudentcitizentraining
@prudentcitizentraining 2 года назад
My backyard, in North Texas. Your ammo choice is very situationally dependent. For home defense in a residential area, patterning isn't that critical. However if you live on a larger property, you could easily have a 50 yard shot to your mail box. Let's call that "property defense". In my case, I live on a larger property AND carry a shotgun for work. So I ask more of my equipment capability. I've since moved on to Federal Flitecontrol 8 pellet, which gives me a one "minute of pie plate" group at 35 yards.

Camera is too far away from the target to see the impacts. Also, Winchester and Federal buckshot is buffered (even the cheap loads). And the average spread of buckshot is 1" per yard, so the winchester you didn't seem to like actually preformed much better than par.

@prudentcitizentraining
@prudentcitizentraining Год назад
The purpose of chasing a tight pattern, is to ensure accountability for every projectile that leaves the muzzle. Any pellet that misses the target, is a liability. This comparison was mostly focused on distances longer than your living room. For use strictly inside the home, any of these will probably work out fine.

@isaacgutierrez5845
@isaacgutierrez5845 Год назад
I see that you hold your ammo to a really high standard and I’m not sure how big your house/property is that you want buckshot to group inside a 8in circle past 10yd. Most shots wouldn’t be taken past 10yd. But why is it that you go off of 8in circles and not a human silhouette? That would be a little more realistic in my opinion.
@prudentcitizentraining
@prudentcitizentraining Год назад
Humanoid targets would definitely be entertaining and perhaps a better visual aid. The 8" circle represents the vital zone of an average adult male's upper thoracic cavity. The property I'm on is fairly big, 40 yards to the mailbox. The shotgun is also a tool for work. For use strictly inside the home, tight patterning isn't that big of a concern.
@kentwilliams3326
@kentwilliams3326 11 месяцев назад
Howdy - Police administrators tend to desire a tight pattern to lesson the chance of bystanders being hit by stray pellets. But, the purpose of a shotgun is the benefit of spreading projectiles to increase hit probability. If one wants a tight pattern, then they should choose a rifled slug. It doesn't get any tighter than that. 😉

Seems that Flite Control simply mimics a fully-choked bore in non-choked barrels. Doubtful that any buck round (except FC) will hold unreasonable pattern diameters at distances beyond, say, 10-yards, in shotguns without chokes. If one cannot tolerate as much as a 20-inch group at 10-yards (30 foot) from short, cylinder bore barrels...don't use non-FC buckshot. Use a choke-able barreled shotgun, slug, or different firearm. JMO.
@GrottyWanker69
@GrottyWanker69 Год назад
A 20" group at 10 yards is absolutely fucking unacceptable. That would be throwing pellets off target at a reasonable HD distance. If you have a group that size at 10 either your ammo sucks and/or your barrel sucks. My Supernova didn't pattern that badly with even the cheapest dogshit buckshot. Either you're talking out of your ass or your guns are shit.
