Patterning the Mossberg Maverick 88 Home Defense Security shotgun with Federal Vital Shok with Flitecontrol wad and Remington Buckshot with standard old school wad. It's important to pattern your shotgun to in order to see what it's doing and where it's hitting.

Imagine how large the pattern would be without any buffer.
@buffalosoutdoors
@buffalosoutdoors 7 лет назад
I didn't realize that the Remington stuff was buffered until I actually opened it up. I was glad it was for the video's sake though because that left the one major component that effects the pattern, the wad, being the only difference between the rounds. So we got a good comparison, at least in my mind. That being said I wish I would have had some non buffered stuff to throw in the mix. That sounds like another video to me. Buffered vs non-buffered. Have you guys done that one? You have so many great videos it's hard to keep track!

This is the best practical demonstration of the Flitecontrol v normal wad on You Tube. Congratulations! It would be really interesting to try different chokes at say 35, 40 and 50 yards on those Flitecontrol cartridges.
@buffalosoutdoors
@buffalosoutdoors 5 лет назад
Thank you for taking a minute to leave the feedback! I appreciate it. I might try it with different chokes.
@thechickenfriedredneck910
@thechickenfriedredneck910 3 года назад
I heard that the flite control doesn't like to be used with chokes cause it makes the wad to get separated from the shot. It does help quite a bit with the regular Remmington to use a modified or full choke.
@thechickenfriedredneck910
@thechickenfriedredneck910 3 года назад
@Virus world A choke is a threaded tube that is screwed into the end of a shotgun barrel to modify the diameter of the end of the barrel. Chokes tend to work like a funnel pushing the pellets closer together so that when they leave the barrel the pellets spread less.
@thechickenfriedredneck910
@thechickenfriedredneck910 3 года назад
Different chokes are more or less restrictive. A Cylinder bore is just a unchoked barrel. Improved Cylinder is slightly smaller than Cylinder bore. Modified is smaller than Improved Cylinder and Full choke is the smallest choke commonly used.
@thechickenfriedredneck910
@thechickenfriedredneck910 3 года назад
Shotguns can have removable chokes that you can change them but others have built in chokes that cannot be removed. Most self defense shotguns dont have removable chokes and typically are Cylinder bore or Modified.

In my 61 years on this rock most of my shooting has been with hand guns and rifles. Not until a few years ago when I bought a combat shotgun with a cylinder bore did I find any interest at all in buckshot. Now I've probably passed the thousand round mark with both factory and reloads in all kinds and sizes of buckshot. The Federal Flight Control is unbeatable in a combat shotgun. They really got it right! I get very similar results that you did with my Mossberg 930 SPX with twenty inch tube, cylinder bore. I would have to rate your video as Great! To many concentrate on in the house ranges, which for the most part prove nothing and fumble around with gloved hands which I find as just plain crazy unless it is ten below zero or something. They might as well wear a welding helmet too. LOL! I have two favorite or carry loads now you might want to try in the future. One is the excellent LE 132-1B load of fifteen pellets of number one buck. The other is the three inch twelve pellet Flight Control load which out of my gun is still plenty effective out to the fifty yard mark averaging seven hits on a coyote size target at that range. You may already know that the flight control wads are NOT all the same, they are different in almost every load Federal makes. I wish they would release a General, Standard, Average, for a better way to describe it flight control wad for us reloaders to experiment with. I think some great loads could come from that. Once again, Great video!
@buffalosoutdoors
@buffalosoutdoors 7 лет назад
Thank you. I am certainly interested in testing the loads you mentioned. I enjoy reading well thought out comments like yours and I appreciate having guys like you around the channel, I have learned more from the comments section of my videos than most would think. I may dig up as many different types of buck shot as I can over the next couple months and put together a more inclusive patterning video this spring.

I've been shooting shotguns for over thirty years but today 29th January 2019 is the first time I've ever used buckshot (can't get it where I live till today) and wow what a great round before the best I could get was Remington 3inch heavy field round the buckshot actually has less recoil much to my surprise but again WOW what a great round
@filianablanxart8305
@filianablanxart8305 3 года назад
@Travis Thacker Most Factory loaded Buckshot is undesized for its nominal stated size . 00B is usually +/- .320 , with Hornady running .315-ish . This isn't necessarily meant to be deceptive , nor meaningfully short changing customers . Due to physics and dimensions , " true sized" buckshot won't stack in expected layers, if a shot cup of substantial wall thickness . And the users are most definitely better served by the tighter patterns achieved with proper wads .

Hey Buffalo, first time I've seen any of your videos and I picked this one on purpose. First off, I own a Mossberg 88 and for the budget price it is all I need to protect my family against that awful day, heaven forbid, but like this one guy said, "Don't train for 'what if's, but for 'when thens'" I was one of those guys who didn't think I needed a gun but partner, it does not take a rocket scientist to know that every law abiding citizen has a duty to arm themselves. Your video answered a question in my mind about using regular or flite control wad. In a middle of the night situation, and seeing just how tight that pattern was, I have decided to not use the flite control for home defense purposes. Thanks, all the best!

Hi Buffalo. Looks like the Federal flite control ammo is the best for hunting while the Remington is a better self defense round. The reason is because buckshot spreading is to be desired in a self defense shotgun which increases hit probability when dealing with a dynamic target. If someone really wants a tight group they can use a rifled slug.

Great stuff! Federal Flitecontrol 12 GA 00 Buck 9 pellets is my primary 12 GA load for my Maverick 88. Mine is the 18.5 inch barreled Security model. The Flitecontrol shells I use are the 1145 fps i.e. the lower recoiling version. Max effective range I've gotten so far with them out of an 18.5 inch barrel was about 25 yards. Though 00 Buck is what I rely on for the most part, I do keep a few slugs handy in case I need to boost range like beyond 25 yards or if I need lots of penetration. As for slugs I rely on Brenneke THDs and the ATSs. Both are very powerful especially the ATS, yet low recoiling.

Good video very informative. I have a modified Remington 870 by Vang Comp Systems out of Chino Valley, AZ. Pretty much allows you to shoot regular buffered 00buckshot to 25+ yards without any special wadding. I patterned Remington 27 pellet #4 Buckshot to 20 yards and got a dense pattern center mass and consistently get sub 10" spread out of it. My choice for home defense loading. I am going to push it out to see how far I can get a sub 15" group. I am thinking I can get 25-30 yards out of it. -edited fixed typos

These are the two brands of Buckshot that I keep on hand. I like the Remington in single ought and double ought, been shooting it for years, then I have the Federal Law Enforcement 00 Buckshot with the Flite Control Wadding. With the Federal Buckshot, I get the same results you do, I mostly practice at 30, 40, 50, and 60 FEET, sometimes out to 100 feet. I don't hunt, I just shoot for the "fun of it" and of course, since I live in a high crime area, in the country, I have my guns for personal defense maybe. So I do not anticipate shooting threats at great distance. I sometimes, attach my silhoutte targets to an empty steel 55 gallon drum, and I get the same result you do though at times the Wadding will be stuck in the "wound" of the target. Since it penetrates the steel barrel after the cardboard target, it will leave the Wadding in the hole sometimes. Either there or at the feet of the target. This is what I always get at 30 to 60 FEET, not yards. It seems to me the Federal has less recoil than the "Remington". The "brass" (actually steel cup) is much deeper on the Remington as compared to the Federal. However the Federal has plenty of recoil (gas actually) to cycle my Remington 1100. At very close range, I really think the Flite Control Buckshot could even cause a more catastopic wound than a Slug, but I have no data to back that up. It seems to me nine pellets in an area only slightly larger than a slug would actually do more damage. However I doubt the "recipient" of such a blast could detect ANY difference whatsoever. He would not be around to "give a critique" I don't think. Also, even though I own several shotguns I PREFER to practice with the Maverick I own. You know, I have had it ten years and it has never failed once and has been shot a lot. I have a Mossberg M-590-A1, it is a fine shotgun and is heavier than the Maverick but with the same ammo I cannot tell the difference between the two guns except for the Ghost Rings Sights on the 590. For what I paid for the M-590 I could have bought two more Mavericks and had money left over. The Remington auto-loader will gobble up either one of these rounds, but it is so heavy and BIG I prefer the handle and shoot the Maverick. For $190 bucks, one of the best guns ever made. Not too often can you get something Cheap and pretty good at the same time. Good video and commentary, Thanks, BB

As a Class , " Tactical " Buckshot has three characteristics at minimum : Hard and/ or Plated shot Buffered Reduced Recoil. For better control for faster follow up shots, or multiple threats . As a bonus, can also contribute to tighten patterns . The usual goal is recoil similar to a standard 1 1/8oz Trap Load . This is achieved through moderate velocity , and sometimes reduced pellet count , i e 8 00B rather than 9 .

Those are the two brands I prefer and I have a case of each now, a partial case of each. I have some Remington Single ought I bought on sale, PRICE matters to me. I bought the Federal Law Enforcement ammo on sale as well, so it was CHEAPER. But I get the very same results you do, and I have one Mossberg 88 exactly like yours, boy you cannot beat that Maverick 88 at $190 Bucks + tax etc. The 88 I have is ten years old I think, it has NEVER malfunctioned once and has had a lot of ammo run though it. I have three others, a Remington 1100 and a Mossberg M-590-A1, and a Browning shotgun and have owned several Mossberg 500 Shotguns. The M-590-A1 is a very fine shotgun to me, It has Rifle Sights on it, and a good shoulder stock with an excellent Recoil pad. Of the four shotguns I have, I like shooting the 88 best. I can shoot the M-590-A1 with the same ammo, I cannot tell the difference. I quit testing them at either 50 or 60 FEET. Of course I don't want to ever have to shoot anyone, and never have, but out at 50 or 60 feet or more it is doubtful I ever will. It is doubtful anyway, but at some distance I feel that is less likely. I practice most often with Birdshot of course, but I get the same results you do, on the FEDERAL Law Enforcement ammo the WADDING will stick IN the target or will pile up at the base of the target. It runs FINE in the Remington Auto-Loader, but I don't like that shotgun as much as i do the Mossbergs as the lifter and all that machinery is in the way when re-loading. That is one thing about a Remington Shotgun I do NOT LIKE. The Mossberg is easier to reload as you "go". I have a Hogue Short or Youth Stock I guess it is on the Mav 88. That is about a $90 bucks upgrade. It has a 12 inch LOP. I run the largest choke on the Remington for Buckshot. The others are all smooth bore of course. The Maverick 88 is the same length sitting in the safe as the M-590-A1, about the same length, but it might be a little bit LIGHTER. The M-590 is a 8 + 1, the 88 a 7+1. But I have had it ten years, I have repainted it at least twice (the barrel and Mag Tube. The low cost of it makes me want to shoot it the most as if something happens to it I have not suffered as much $$ loss. The Federal cycles the Auto-loader just tine, but it seems it may have a little bit LESS RECOIL. Not for sure, it is very powerful. Seems the Remington ammo has more recoil. The rifle sights to ME are not a big deal. I have a bead sight on the 88, I get the same results with either one. Anyway, those 88's they seem to be a little bit loser *maybe* than the more expensive Mossbergs, but for $190 bucks, it is just about the best buy ever in a serious fire arm. I has NEVER let me down once. The others haven't either, except I ahve had a malfunction with the REmington 1100. I seemed to have solved that with some Lubrication in a critical area within the firearm. For what that M-590 A-1 cost I could buy TWO 88's and had money left over. But it is a very nice Defensive shotgun. The auto-loader is a great one too, but it is the most expensive firearm I own. Then the machinery is in the way to "reload" so it is not my favorite. Good Video, BB

Thanks for the video, very informative. I now want to pattern my new 1301 Beretta 12ga and see if it comes close to your results.

Could you do the same demonstration with improved cylinder choke and modified choke? The results are very informative. Thanks for the videos! :)
