There is no way a red-blooded human can watch this and not have a HUGE smile afterwards!!! Patti and Joe were like each other's hype-man and Billy Preston was keeping it down at the piano
Fun Fact: Ms. Labelle was nominated for an Prime Time Emmy Award for this performance. (Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program)
Not this performance. She was nominated for her performance of "You'll Never Walk Alone. Also, this is a duet, so it can't be nominated as an individual performance, but thank you for bringing attention to this fantastic achievement. She lost to Angela Lansbury's performance of Sweeny Todd, which is a travesty of justice.
Arsen Jaho, the song isnt a " rock ballad." The song is soul music. It's just how the industry marketed it. "Blue eyed soul" artists like Joe and Janis Joplin received accolades and success because they were white people who could imitate black music. Truthfully, their success is a good example of how much racism informs everything in this culture. Black vocalists were singing from a natural resonance but Janis, Joe etal pushed out a throaty gravelly tone. Culture vulture mentality always places white people into genres that are not authentic for them. Rock and Roll artists made millions while the creators of this music remained marginalized and obscure. A good example....how did Elvis become "the King" when he was simply IMITATING black performers who were much better? ( The man who started his career said .....if I could find a white man who could sing and dance like a black man I'd be a millionaire)
@@lillierobinson1786 OK you could consider this song a blue eyed soul. Its usual for Joe to sing a handful of this genre, but i couldnt say that Joe managed very well this kind of music. His voice was harsh and typical rock voice. There were at least 3 artists good in blue eyed soul: Paul Young George Michael and Hall&Oates.
This is a very special & beautiful song to me. My husband surprised me when we got married. He actually sung this song to me. I don’t care who wrote it nor who sings it. It’s a classic. Love!! Love!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
YES SIR HE REALLY KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING AND MAGNIFICENT AND PROFESIONALLY DEAL WITH ALL THE SOMETIMES CRAZY BELT OUTS OF MIRS PATTI ANOTHER ONE WOULD HAVE LOST HES THE BEST DEFINITLY
Joe didn't give a shit, he kept time with his arms, everyone else had to follow him USUALLY, watch Jennifer Werner sing "Up where we belong" with him, she has to look at his mouth to stay in time, here Patti just dd the same damn thing to Joe, he had to watch her gyrations, LMAO, he didn't mind, he was used to it anyway.
She's great, but I've seen Joe Cocker on stage all by himself and he knocks this song out of the park - not with the style of laBelle, but with his own very unique style!!!! He kind of made the song what it became with his croaker voice and deep, yet restrained vocal control.
Sure did. You can visually see him transform. As she went higher, he followed. As she looked at him and drew out his spirit, you can see him inspired by her force and rise to the occasion. She sang to the God within him, like we all should play to the God that's within every living thing and play to the best that's in them instead of only seeing their worst. When you get to the point when they start resisting because they are daunted by doubt within them, you hold on and keep drawing it out when they can't surrender to the God that's in themselves. You saw him resisting, but she felt it and fought even harder to draw him out and locked her eyes into him to banish that doubt and jumped and flung her love at him and moved her arms in excitement like a bird flapping her arms in excitement at his soul rising to see it take flight - until they saw it in themselves too and she grabbed him and wouldn't let go. She drew him out and she looked him in the eyes with total love and heard his voice rise out of his soul instead of his lungs and his spirit rose higher and higher with the strength of aliveness and when you saw him stare back into her eyes and his spirit had come alive, he rose up and then matched her force for force and that's when you saw God enter the room and the soul rise up to the rafters and the room became transcendent and love rose up to the rafters. That's the performance I was watching We all saw and felt it change. The smiles on everyone's faces changed to a raw moment of complete love and joy of being alive. The power this woman has to plunge her entire being into a song without doubt or hesitation that she can't do it. It's complete and total surrender to faith. Most people block it by doubt, she runs toward it and surrenders completely to it without hesitation. She's a force that doesn't shy down to faith or doubt. She takes everyone with her. She has what the Spanish call Duande, where the audience, by their support, push her spirit up to another level, and as the performer, rises higher and higher to God, she takes the audience with her to meet Him. That's the most powerful association we can see in a performance. Everyone participates and has a part to play and in the end, we all become One! Powerful, powerful performance!!! This is a woman who not only has a powerful voice, but an indomitable spirit of faith, who draws God on the stage where we not only hear her voice, but we FEEL her voice. God is music and music is God and nobody fights for it better than Ms. Pattie LA Belle - a force to be reckoned with!!!! ❤😢😮😊
I don't think she necessarily made him work harder she put him in a funny position. And you can bet your life that Billy Preston and Joe cocker will consoling each other about her over singing.. maybe the call writer of that song who is Billy Preston. Even apologized to Joe sorry about Patty stepping all over you words to that effect I'm sure
My dad back in the old days with the blue bells. my father played drums for her she sang perfectly. and I mean perfectly. She's a wonderful person but she got into this over singing!! no doubt about it believe me I'm a musician I know...
I wish today was like it was back then where it was ok to be in your 40s and still be on top and loved by everyone musically. Today, all we get is kids dancing half naked and talentless singers.
tasiawood FUCKING YESS !!! People back in the day were still out and famous in their 40s 50s but you wanna know why ? BECAUSE PEOPLE BACK IN THE DAY SANG !! Everyone only wanted people who SANG but now everyone likes to be entertained but by people who sing with fireworks dancing and flipping all these costumes and barely saying any words
You said it!! Most of the people I care about are senior citizens now or if they are younger, they don't follow the pop formula so they don't get much attention.
HAPPY 79th BIRTHYEAR belatedly (May 24, 2023) TO our INTERNATIONALLY OUTSTANDING GODMOTHER of SOUL, MISS PATTI LABELLE, who had a challenging birthday this year especially with the passing of Sister Rock Legend Tina on the exact same day! 😮 Nonetheless, despite the challenges of life that befall you & us each day, MISS MUSICAL DYNAMITE FASHION ICON PATTI LABELLE THANK YOU for INSPIRING us ALWAYS to WHOLISTICALLY ASPIRE for EXCELLENCE throughout LIFE'S JOURNEY!!!😢 We LOVE ❤U MAMA P!🎉
Yes she does know exactly what she's doing. the music business comes with the music business and the acting business ego is a part of.. some have it in total control some don't. She came out n instantly oversinging stepping on Joe from the very first note. Can you tell me where you ever heard of duet like that.. after a while she wasn't even singing words.. she was just holding notes.. that is not the way it goes
It's equivalent to the Star spangled banner being sung by someone who knows how to sing it at a nice quick tempo or someone who drags it out and thinks it's about them
Which nowadays 90% of the time it's sung wrong.. the only artist I saw singing right with Billy Joel and Huey Lewis and the News.. n Ella Fitzgerald one of the greatest singers of all time.. now she can get on a roll but she knows how to do it and when to do it
Ella Fitzgerald is one of the greatest ass singers of all time she could tear anything up she can overseeing way more and way better than Patty I know it is very unprofessional to compare I'm just trying to make you understand... Got a person like Ella knows when to go out there and when not to
Patty is a wonderful singer a wonderful singer. Back when she didn oversing ridiculouslyI I went to see her all the time with my dad behind her on drums
The musicians in the band with joke about her over singing have a drink in the hotel room and she was the butt of the joke because she just got ridiculous
This is simply gut wrenching soul........two people pushing each other to sing from the heart. Patti's soaring vocals and Joe's raspy growl were complimentary in the best possible way........loved it.
if you were not a Patti LaBelle fan, per say, from back in the day...and had lost track of her 'girl group from the 60s (the Bluebelles) and were never really a LaBelle fan from the 70s, then you probably knew very little to nothing about her solo records between 1977, right on thru the very early 80s. And it was during those years that she REALLY took her talent to another level..earning her stripes, as we say, as a solo act. And thats when my folks started taking me to her concerts whenever she came thru DC or Baltimore..her live shows during that time, were something to behold, because no one had ever seen someone sing so LOUDLY, with so much drama and skill and passion. With all due respect to the Chakas and Arethas...Patti was a one-off, because she could do things with her voice, on the fly, that you just thought were impossible. If Patti had wanted to sing opera, she would've been HUGE...if she had gotten a jump start and really trained herself to do it...because when we would go see her at Warner Theater or the Kennedy Center or Constitution Hall, my Dad would always say after her shows "I dont know if I just saw a soul singer or an opera singer" When this special was being promoted on tv..and we saw the advertisements for it.. and saw that Patti was one of the headliners, I remember my Mother saying to all of us, " we are going to watch that shit, because I know that heffa is going to show her black ass and sing somebody's shoes off!"..and thats EXACTLY what she did.
People like Sarah Vaughan Ella Fitzgerald. They don't step on people they know when to let go when to keep it under control they know when to explode... I will give you an analogy.. in music there is something called Dynamics. Have you come out singing like it's the encore where are you going to go from there explanation point that's like a guitar player starting with his amp on 10! How do you go up when the Dynamics call for it you're already there there's no place else to go no Dynamics no building no story.. I'm in the music business 40 years and 75% of my constituents agree.. and the ones who don't it's just sour grapes
It was a gift to see Patti LaBelle live in concert never got to see Joe Cocker though I was really sad my dad grew up with Joe Cocker and recently passed away of the coronavirus thanks Trump card you got a lot of blood 🩸 on your hands you’ll rotten hell
Only woman i know that can take 5 words and make it last 5 minutes...whew😱 we miss you Joe❤ take a listen to the best is yet to come. Never heard anyone hold a note like that and live to tell about❤
I can't imagine what those peopke felt as they witnessed such massive talent of Joe, Billy and Patti. We dont do music like this anymore. I'm envious to be honest.
So, so true this was a match I could have never imagined but somehow it crushed me. what a performance! The way the music moves through both of them is just amazing to watch !
The only two people in the world who could play for Patti like this, Budd Ellison and Billy Preston... Those are the only two who could play the keys off a piano messing with Patti, RIP to them both...
Patti returned to the Apollo filled with the Holy Ghost ... she killed every number she was in ... including the ending number when Diana was supposed to be leading "I Want to Know What Love Is" lol
Hahaha I remember that! And after whispering I Want to Know What Love Is, she didn't want to give Patti the mic. And after Patti took over with the power vocals, Diana made someone get her another mic. Looked like she was lip syncing. Lol And miss Patti don't need no mic NOHOW!
My mother brought me along with her to Patti Labelle concert at a time when I didn't know much about her. I wasn't a fan at all but let me tell you - when I saw this woman come on stage with just a mic in her hand pouring her heart and soul in every single note and in of her body, she instantly gained a life long fan! Her concerts are like some awe-inspiring revelation! She's earned every right to be an icon and legend!
Being so closed to the Apollo in from Brooklyn, N.Y., Tropicana, Havana, Cuba, La Princesa in Acapulco, Mex., and Caesar Palace in La Vegas, USA, for M. Ali fight. For my Birthday(70's) , I will look at the Blue Sky and smile in my appreciation, to The King, Lord God for being alive. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, Lord God.
On THIS night I truly believe that Patti intended to show Berry Gordy and the entire Motown existence what they missed out on in Motowns glory years. And she totally did!! 4 standing ovations all night, and Patti LaBelle, a non Motown artists, got 3 of them!!!!! That's a baaaaad B!!! The best there is......
Monica Hunter 100%. Patti was riiiiiight on the edge of a giant comeback. In '82 she went to Broadway with Al Green and got raves for Your Arms Too Short to Box With God. In '83, "Love, Need and Want You" and "If Only You Knew" put her back on R&B radio, and she snagged "New Attitude" and "Stir It Up" on the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack in '84 and got a taste of crossover success. When this special came around in '85, she was raw ambition and starving to reach the top. When she got this, it put most of the eyes in America on her and she wasn't gonna waste it, and tore the throat out of everybody else who stepped to her onstage. You see the clips of her from Motown Returns and she's wailing like she's still waiting to be discovered, pouring it all out. She did Live Aid the same year, and she blew all the way up after those. She got a friggin Emmy nomination after Motown Returns for Outstanding Performer in a Variety Special! MY big question has always been how did this woman who was NEVER on the Motown label (and never was even afterward) and wasn't nearly the biggest star or marquee name in the house that night got THAT many big showcase numbers. I'm pretty sure she logged more screentime than anybody else on the show. She stole the whole damn thing.
Patti is the ultimate show,, she is a team leader,, makes everybody SHINE,,,I love Mr. Joe C. His voice was so unusual, but with plenty of soul, and pure to me,,,,
One of the things that's often missed in this performance is Joe's quiet and soulful adlibs where you think "Damn, did he visit a black baptist church on Sundays."
..and more importantly, HE KNEW where to put the ad libs...you cant be up there talking about how beautiful she is, and then out of nowhere, you go into "the hills are alive, with the sound of mu-siccccc!"...Joe was one of those singers that immersed himself in black music and observed from the greats like Charles, Redding and Cooke, what and how to sing, to connect with the listener...and it wasnt a put-on...he knew the subtleties of the ad libs, you mention. Joe was a VERY legit, soul-singer. I miss the guy.
THAT IS WHAT YOU CALL BRINGING IT. When I hear folks say some of these talentless acts nowadays “brought it,” I refer them to this clip. This is the epitome of Bringing It and in less than 4 minutes!!!!!!!
When you sit back and think about it, Patti really is amazing. Joe Cocker's dead, Billy Preston has passed on, too. Bill Cosby is legally blind and about to go to jail for the rest of his life ... but then there's Patti who, at 73 years old, is alive and kickin', is at the top of her game, and can still sing circles around her contemporaries *and* her protégées!
Chill bumps within seconds. Absolutely awesome version with Billy Preston playing it his way. I think all the artists were true to themselves. It felt real.
Have mercy patti did a lot in that moment she sang she danced she preached she kissed the pianist she was possessed she played she fought war omy gosh! She's everything. 😍 😍 😍
@@bernadettestar nah he is just meaning exactly what he said. No matter who covers or remakes something, it all starts with the creator. He is just praising Billy which would ultimately lead to this. It's no diss on anyone
