That organist was my late husband Nathaniel "Crocket" Wilkie, who was Patti's assistant Musical Director for 22 years. He passed away in May 2007 at the age of 51 of Heart Disease. Also directing the choir was Patti's Musical Director James "Bud" Ellison whom has also passed away in October 2005 at the age of 52 of cancer. People wake up and take care of yourselves.
I have studied music for 23 years and Ms. Patti is the only vocalist out there who can bring tears to my eyes. I remember being six years old and listening to her sing Over the Rainbow - I was hooked from that moment on. Yes, some of her performances are better than others, but there is still no other like Patti LaBelle.
When you sing to someone and look directly into their eyes the way that she does in this performance lets all of us know that it's coming straight from her heart!
Miss Osceola McCarty was a wonderful, wonderful very caring woman in life. She didn't have very much but she cared enough to give all she had to help educate those in need. Miss McCarty May your loving soul rest eternally in Heavenly Divine peace. Miss LaBelle you're an awesome singer and person. God bless you as well.

Patti, with all the success she has had, and still has, seems so freakin' humble and down to earth it's amazing. She's a great example of how superstars should act.
I remember watching this special tribute and I was so moved by Ms. LaBelle's performance. If you want a song done right, let Patti sing it, 'cause no one else can do it justice!
She is the voice of God recycled, no one like her, I must go see her before she leaves us, I can't think of anyone with such power, and magnificent presence.
In a career literally covered with show-stopping performances, this by far in my estimation is one of Miss Patti's greatest! Her vocals were dead on, her sincerity was spot on, and her connection with the audience was perfect. They certainly don't make em like her anymore, especially this new breed of girl singers. What a crying shame that Patti is not in the rock and roll hall of fame yet.

I am not a Patti Labelle fan, though I do enjoy several of her songs. My last semester of college (Fall '06) I came across this performance and after watching it back-to-back several times, (I'll admit that) I cried like a baby. This was such a powerful tribute to one of the greatest people in the world, the late Osceola McCarty. After a while, the footage was removed from RU-vid, but I'm SOOOOOO glad to find it on here again! Thanks for posting!
Beautiful woman = Labelle!!!! Patti Labelle Is an International Global Icon. She is just not famous in the United States but all over the country. She Has let that 5 octave range take her to the top. It has been Stated that she is the only Vocalist that can out belt an opera singer and have the lowest register doing it. Patti is Fantastic. Shes got a voice on her that will bring you litteraly to your knees. Shes a blessing. And shes Patti Labelle.

Wow! I absolutely am jealous of miss Patti! No one is as humble and giving on the national level as mrs. Labelle. I just googled this wonderful woman. I couldn't wait to see just what it was that she had done to get everyone so thankful. I enjoyed seeing people giving God His well deserved Glory in this wonderful event. Praise the Lord.
I have been looking for this particular performance of Patti's but had forgotten the name of the song. When I found it here; I felt my soul lift up. I cried the entire time. Some times we have a tendency to forget just how good God is. Patti just reminded us. The woman is gifted, no matter how you look at it. So was Ms. McCarty.

@@patgorden5002 but only patti did the tribute not aretha. So for that night Patti was the star tributing this great woman plus Patti's song was very emotional. This song made many cry even me when I watched it at home I was done for like 30 minutes afterwards. So its not fair to compare given the circumstances. I watched the original broadcast in full
