I was only 16 when I first heard *The Stealer* at a party, the rhythm of its sound imprinted itself in my head and I began to love Free... Years have passed, I have heard thousands of songs and I play hundreds, but this is one I recognize from the first two chords and I immediately feel a rush of pleasure... God bless Paul Kossof (RIP), Andy Fraser (RIP), Simon Kirke and Paul Rodgers.
Damn, I'm Paul's age now and that sucker looks great! Paul Kossoff is the most influential, under-appreciated guitarist of all time! One of my Fave Free tracks!!!
The stealer by free l always like the music from Paul Rodgers of free and bad company........wow..... .fantastic like we use to say groovy....far out......
I make no criticism of the guitarists who do a fantastic job but it does prove it was in Kossofs fingers....but he is gone now and we have to get over it....so long live these fine chaps for at least worshiping his memory and keeping his style and licks alive...
(Sarcasm Font) I guess Paul doesn't know much about guitar tone and just got Leese and Dengler cause he just didn't know any better. What on earth would PAUL ROGERS know about guitar players and tone? (End Sarcasm Font) thanks for the video - Glad to see some new versions of some old Free songs!
I too loved free. Have you seen the live version of ''Heartbreaker'' on youtube? Put in ''Free Heartbreaker Rare'' It's live in Japan. Poor sound quality but a great performance. Best wishes Peter
I totally agree about the distortion. I have seen PR play this song many times. ALL the guitarists (Schon, Lukather, Geoff Whitehorn, Howard Leese, etc) he has used do have far too much distortion, so maybe it is a request from PR to 'modernise' the guitar sound? If you listen to the original studio track, the guitar sound is almost clean, with just the sound of the Les Paul through, possibly a Marshall but could easily have been a Fender Twin or Bassman (studio photo's exist) KOSS RULES
On the best live Free vids of this song, Paul Kossoff runs his Les Paul through his usual Marshall rig, using mostly the bridge pickup, and it has more guts than the single, but not the same amount of distortion as these two guys had in 2007. More of what you'd expect from Kossoff. Here is an example. (Free, Live, Croydon 1970, the Stealer): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oMyqIQ6LLjo.html
@diamondog99 Interesting assumption that the guitarists who, lets be frank, are professionals earning a living from playing, don't know how to listen or try for authenticity. It may well be that Paul had specifically requested a more modern tone for the song or that the acoustics in the venue didn't lend themselves to the original's tone. It should also be noted that both the bass & drums bear no resemblance to the original recording's tone either.
This performance is really lacking without Paul's huge ringing Les Paul sound. These two dudes have too much gain dialled up. Gain costs tone (1st law of electric guitars)
I agree but the white haired guitarist is Howard Leese from Heart so he does come with a lot of experience and his own technique but no one can replace PK...
Total bollocks. If we all followed that logic there'd be no Zeppelin, ACDC, Quo, Free, Skynyrd, Lizzy etc etc. We'd all be listening to crap talent shows for entertainment.
@adamfruitcake man the guitars are crap...thin, no balls ,over distorted ,not even close...kossoff played straight into his amp , no effects ,just amp distortion... lame effort from these 2 guitarists who dont know how to listen or even try for authenticity.. bass and drums are fine and voice is good enough. there is no need for technology here man keep it raw. there not rappers that need new tech there suposed to be playing 70s rock
