Best of luck Marcus, if you pull your dipstick while your engine is on and the whistle dampens, most likely your diaphragm is shot.

I have a 2011 r56 cooper s with the n18 and has this exact problem it had boost the first days but before some days i loost all boost can this be the cause of the lost boost? The wastegate is good the wastegate actuator is good the boost controller is ok because the wastegate is closed when i turn off the engine and its opened when i turn on the engine so it's good but can this extra internal pressure be the cause of my lack of boost? In the scanner shows little vacuum and any codes of anything

Wayne..an update on my previous comment. My PCV valve on R55 2011 base Clubman is set in flush with the top of the valve cover with access to only one of the clips. I have heard that if you take it to the dealer they only offer to replace the whole valve cover! I’m working on a couple of work around. One would be to put a generic PCV valve into the hose that come out of the valve cover. The second would be to cut off the flanges on the old valve to get at the clips. I have been getting a whole list of codes with rough idle, cleared them, removed the hose from the PCV valve and sealed off To the manifold with tape. No more codes and good idle. I have a new PCV so I don’t mind messing up the old one. I don’t Want to destroy the clips on the valve cover by prying on it. Any thoughts on these approaches?
@waynesgarage8579
@waynesgarage8579 4 года назад
David, I have heard of some Mini owners deleting their PCV valve from their engine with Delete Caps but I have no experience with that mod. If I were you, I'd continue trying to replace the PCV valve. Did you purchase the PCV with the black cover or without? If it came with the black cover then my tips below may help. For your Clubman I notice the tabs look a little different from mine. Check out this ebay link below and look at photo #6 www.ebay.com/itm/New-PCV-Valve-Cover-Repair-Kit-Fits-02-19-Mini-Cooper/202807734480?fits=Year%3A2011%7CSubmodel%3AClubman%7CMake%3AMini&hash=item2f384870d0:g:BSQAAOSwH51dssG2 Using these photos as reference, use a marker and mark all 4 tab locations so you know at all times where they are. Dedicate one hand to keep upward force on the cover or get a big flat head screwdriver and keep a constant LIGHT pry on the bottom of the cover, while the other hand is focused on moving the tabs outward. The second tab can be reached with an angle pick if I'm not mistaken. You can WEDGE the cover upwards to expose the other clips and unclip it with a pick one by one. Assuming you don't mind about the appearance, your original cover won't look nice with all the prying and wedging but it's the diaphragm that's sealing and that's all that matters. Oh yeah hope you have a good flashlight, seeing what you're prying is always better than "prying and hope nothing breaks". Patience is key. Study the photos of the cover and know where the other tabs are. Once you have two of the clips loose, you've passed the hardest part of the job. Remember to clean off as much sludge as you can before reinstalling. Lastly, I recommend an Oil Catch Can for our Mini engines since they tend to burn a few ounce of oil each oil change if not more. Make sure to purchase the higher quality ones with a screen inside so the oil vapors collect and drips down to the bottom. This should reduce the amount of sludge that forms in the engine. Hope this helps. Take care, Wayne

Good morning. I replaced the valve cover on my 2011 mini countryman and the cover came off while I was driving. Can you tell me where I can get the spring for it? That was lost as well. Thank you! N13 engine...
@waynesgarage8579
@waynesgarage8579 4 года назад
Jared, I did a little search and couldn't find any PCV kit with the spring included. In your situation you will need to find a similar spring with 3 coils and with similar diameter and thickness of the coils. Check @2:58. I notice a lot of European kits (audi, land rover, vw, bmw) comes with the spring but I can't guarantee it'll be a perfect fit. If you end up finding a spring and repurchasing the cover, make sure all 5 clips are snapped in. Get a good grip on the cover and tug on it hard, it should be really secure once it's snapped in. Let me know how it goes.

The breather pipe that is attached to this I found there is some oil residue inside the pipe. Is this meant to be dry? I tried to remove the cover as you did but I didn’t want to break it so I haven’t removed it yet.
@waynesgarage8579
@waynesgarage8579 3 года назад
Anthony, ideally you shouldn’t be seeing any oil buy these engines are prone to have a lot of oil lost thru blow by. It’s recommended to install an aftermarket oil catch can in these engine and drain them every oil change. If you installed one, you’ll notice about a few ounce to half a quart of oil in the catch every time you drain it.

Yes the PCV system is different between the N14 and N18. For your N14 you will need to remove the long rectangular cover on top of the valve cover to expose two small valves that either open or close. Those could be plugged up. @waynesgarage8579

Hello MySho, That sounds more like a leaking valve cover gasket but a plugged/restrictive pcv can contribute to that condition. If you have high mileage then it’s normal wear and tear. I recommend installing an oil catch can in these minis because every oil change you collect anywhere from a 1/4 to 1/2qt of oil that would have been burned through your engine.

Oil catch can is best mounted next to your master cylinder. All the special hose and fittings could be purchased separate but there are kits ready for plug n play you would have to pay a premium for the convenience.

Hello, I have the same car, R56 2011 Mini Cooper S. I’m getting code P0171 something like “lean condition”. I recently replaced the cylinder head gasket due to overheating. Can PCV issue cause this code? Also, how do you un-clip the other two parts to remove the cover? Your video didn’t show that. I don’t want to damage anything and want to reuse the lid. Thanks
@waynesgarage8579
@waynesgarage8579 2 года назад
Yosef, for the code I would first double check the head gasket job to see if any old vacuum hoses might have cracked or loosen. Does your scanner have live data option by chance? For the pcv clip I had to put the camera down to wiggle the cover loose. Once I got the first two on the left side loose you can rock the cover gently and feel the other clips loose.

If you have exactly the same engine as mine it there’s the pcv valve should be removable exactly like how the video is and you clean the orange diaphragm inside out. The cover and the cavity will need be hardest to clean all the corners so just a little patience.

@@waynesgarage8579 thanks sir for your feedback. I have N18 for my R56 (2011 Mini Cooper S). When replacing the head gasket, the Manuel recommends replacing the fuel line that comes from the high pressure fuel pump to the back of cylinder head. I did not replaced this fuel line, since I verified it was not leaking any fuel. Is the code P0171 due not not replacing the fuel line possibly since it was one time use??
@waynesgarage8579
@waynesgarage8579 2 года назад
I don’t think it can be a hose that was only recommended to be replace that could be an issue. The code is for lean condition so one way would be a fuel line getting maybe pinched when things were putting back together to cause the code. Or a vacuum leak allowing unmetered air into system. Just remember to always ask yourself does what you’re suspecting cause a lean condition, almost like reversing a math equation. Does your code reader have live data?

Will this be responsible for p053a code stating it's stuck open?
@waynesgarage8579
@waynesgarage8579 2 года назад
I believe that code is for the heater circuit being open not the pcv physically being open. There’s nothing built in the system to monitor that. So I would first check the connector on the pcv hose located on driver side of the valve cover. The hose connects from the valve cover to turbo intake tube

In my case the upper right clip was the second one. Its hard to explain how, but: After snapping the first one, move on to the second one from the top right. You need to accurately insert the screwdriver between the membrane cover and the base right next to the second latch.Then, when you have found this place and inserted the screwdriver correctly, you need to carefully turn it clockwise. I had no problems with the other clips. Got the same problem with my wife's 2013 Countryman S. Idle and letting off the accelerator causing a whistle sound. I believe I found the exact part here: www.amazon.com/Valve-Cover-Membrane-Cooper-Engine/dp/B07TCKQY8Y/ref=sr_1_7_sspa?crid=SKD95R3591CO&keywords=2013+mini+cooper+countryman+pcv+membrane&qid=1673968241&replacementKeywords=mini+pcv+membrane&sprefix=2013+mini+cooper+countryman+pvc+membrane%2Caps%2C73&sr=8-7-spons&vehicle=2013-32-16222------------&vehicleName=2013+Mini+Cooper+Countryman&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyODFFMk9ITEpMVUM1JmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNDU3OTc0M0JZOUhGNFpXRTRPTiZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwOTU5ODQxUVhHRUFSWUhEN1RJJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfbXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==
