Yield is a monster. Given To Fly is a live staple and is an anthem for Pearl Jam. Check out Faithfull, No Way or All Those Yesterdays from this album. Jack Irons was Pearl Jam's best drummer. No Code and Yield are some of his finest work. As well as this band as a whole.

Yesssssss, so glad you got to Given to Fly! Thank you for namechecking me, too! First, Mike's main guitar part is in DADGAD tuning, so good ear on that being in D! Jack Irons (Formerly of RHCP) is the drummer on this album, his last before Matt F*ckin' Cameron took over due to Jack's health keeping him from touring. My favorite part of the song (I played guitar for darn near 30 years before fibro/arthritis made me retire last year) is during the "And he still gives his love he just gives it away" part, Stone's (right channel) octave slide DOO-DOOT-duh-DOO-DUH-chukchukchuk-DOO-DOOT-duh-DOO-DUH. I was never a lead player, always a rhythm player, so Stone's my dude, and I love his touches on stuff like this. Thanks again, David! Can't wait for more, and REALLY looking forward to the patreon poll coming to fruition!

Great job on the 1k subs! The story behind this song is that Mike McCready was snowed in his home and was toying around on his guitar and came up with that opening guitar line knew it was good but didn't know where to take it. So he called Stone Gossard and played it to him. Stone then hummed to him how he thought the bridge and chorus should sound like. Essentially writing a song together over the phone. This would've been around the 2000s before skype and zoom Just amazing stuff..

I’m sure it isn’t on purpose but you’re progressing through pj songs almost chronological. Lots of stuff from ten early on moving on to vs and Vitalogy. Now you’re getting into the later 90’s stuff. This is good. Jumping straight into the mid to late chronology wouldn’t have set your ear up very well. Later pj music is harder to appreciate for the non pj ears. Just my two cents. Congrats on the milestone

Great reaction. One of my favorite pearl jam songs. Ironically this was the only pearl jam album jack irons played on but it was jack irons who gave the stone gossard demo to his surfer buddy Eddie vedder years before so without jack irons there literally would be no pearl jam or at least not with Eddie vedder as their singer. Congrats on 1000! C'mon everyone let's keep spreading the word and try to hit 2000 to start 2021!!

When this was new, a friend said it reminded them of Zeppelin, for some reason they couldn't explain. Took a while for me to understand where they were coming from, but when it sank in, I couldn't unhear it as a post-grunge, baritone “Going to California”, minus the paranoid bridge.

Yes, finally it's time Jack Irons got his credit from you, I think this is the first song that you react with him on the drums. Oh wait you react to blood live in 95 where he is drumming. Jack is also band member who save pearl jam twice. First when he pass on the stone Gossard demo to Eddie, and 2nd Jack is also the guy who tied pearl jam when they almost break up during the vitalogy era. Jack is also my favorite PJ drummer, his style is very unique, the tribal pattern was his original style but he is also good on straight ahead tune with his hard hitting drumming. If you want to check out some cool Jack Irons stuff, listen to his solo album where he cover Pink Floyd 'Shine on you crazy Diamond' with Eddie Vedder on vocals and Les Claypol on Bass! You never think that Eddie and Les is even a combination ? I will give you the link below.

It's not a coincidence that whenever you do songs from the albums Yield or No Code you've noticed the drummer. Jack Irons was the drummer for those two albums and hes my personal favorite for Pearl Jam. Not to mention the best chemistry Jeff Ament had with any of the Pearl Jam drummers in my opinion. Chemistry between bassist and drummer isn't talked about enough and those two had it, shame hes not with the band anymore he just couldn't keep up with their insane touring schedule.

I've heard people criticize this song by saying that the vocal line is similar to Led Zeppelin's "Going To California" but I don't see any problem with that. Hell, I once heard a recording of Pearl Jam covering that song live with Robert Plant and Eddie Vedder even joked that he was happy to play that song with Plant since he had stolen the melody for one of their songs.
