People think neurodivergence is...

It's about recognizing that neurodivergent brains are not just absorbing the world differently; they're experiencing it in a way that brings depth to our collective human experience. And when we truly embrace this, we don't just make the world more inclusive for neurodivergent individuals; we make it richer for everyone.

No one condemns dogs for their sensitive hearing or smell. Nor owls for their night vision. On the sensory spectrum, our processing is somewhere between ordinary humans and those animals. And that is remarkable.

Many people don't realize being neurodivergent isn't being bad at what neurotypicals call "normal". It's experiencing the world through a totally different perspective, through different logic patterns, and that may not coincide with the society standards. Being surrounded by people understanding this and who can help us make use of our strengths truly can be a blessing, both for them and for us.

I had an interaction earlier today that was exactly this. My friend hugged me and apparently I must have made a face because he asked "Do you not like hugs?" I said "No, I love hugs but I was looking at the map on the wall" It's not that I didn't want it, but that my brain was focused entirely on something else and wasn't prepared to process that extra information

To me “neurodivergent,” is much too broad of a label to be able to make any sweeping statements like “they take in too much information.” Neurodivergent can be applied to so many conditions like Autism, OCD, ADHD, Schizophrenia, and I’ve even seen people with general anxiety or depression claim the label. I think if you’re going to be making generalizations like these, to me it feels more honest to actually describe what condition you’re talking about rather than vaguely imply all neurodivergent people are a certain way. No hate to anyone, it’s just this over-generalization of mental conditions has become a pet peeve of mine.

I’ve been debating within whether I’m neurodivergent for a long time, and this video didn’t fix my struggle but it definitely made me feel better regardless of what i am. I have always felt different and though I don’t struggle with social situations I am very sensitive and get overstimulated and buried by others emotions often. I see myself as smart but I can never focus for very long I need some sort of fidget (side note I’ve recently gotten into slime and I’ve been made fun of enjoying it so much but it helps me stop moving and focus) when I was younger I was very antsy and would never really stand still and that hasn’t grown out of me. I like having attention from others but I also enjoy being alone far more. This isn't just about autism though, I can relate this to my ADD and / or previous depressions too. Yes, it also works well for autism. As an example; The depression part is slightly different, the concluding sentence doesn't work. I didn't need those "perspectives", but they weren't necessarily wrong. I learned to live with them and adapt to avoid highlighting those "perspectives". I know I'm more sensative to some things. Now I can work with them, and actually actively change my (literal) perspective if those negative "nuances" get highlighted too much. I'm a more effective person now that I learned about those "perspectives".

@Plethorality
@Plethorality 4 месяца назад
As s fellow autistic, i think your comment was great, except for the snowflake reference. I understand what you mean, but it is heavy with other connotations and may undercut your point. Plus, returning to our brain's native literal land, a snowflake is an individual, beautiful, sensitive piece of existence. You and i are exactly that! : ) There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, it is necessary, which is the point of this video. And yes, i agree with you that resilience and adaptability are excellent things to work on. (Vital, actually) But we will never be fully neurotypical, nor need we be. And it is too easy to not focus on our strengths and take them for granted. I have learnt the hard way, that some of them can fade and die out. So a bit of lionising can be what we need, at times. I hope that made sense. Have a better than expected week. Neurodivergent used correctly has merit. Unfortunately, our newest generation is using it as a reason their unacceptable behaviors are acceptable because they have a word for it. Very similar to ADHD.. these are natural behaviors that we used to identify and learn to control.. somewhere we decide that we could label things, and then we don't have to do the work it took to learn how to control these undesirable behaviors.. more of the degradation of society..
@pas.
@pas. 5 месяцев назад
yes yes, these youngin's are at it again, total collapse at 11, yadda-yadda. of course in the golden age of whatever kids were allowed to play outside and they were not bombarded by all kinds of hyperoptimized attention-seeking products. not to mention that, as we learned more of ADHD (and ASD and other mental health issues that we added to the DSM), we can naturally expect to find more cases (and more people are willing to come forward and seek help, which is very good, because they will hopefully learn to control their impulses so they won't punch people who are telling them to "do the work") oh, and also DSM-V changed the ADHD age of onset criterion (first presentation limit to 12 years, before - in the DSM-IV - it was 7), so this alone will lead to a lot more people with the label. (and, again, it's because we know more about this, not just because uh I don't feel like "doing the work") now, that said, can you elaborate on these unacceptable behaviors?
@199sick
@199sick 5 месяцев назад
@pas. I'm failing to see your argument?? Is your view that, because of more stressors in society, these behaviors are acceptable?? Also, you pointed out that they raised the age from 7 to 12, then said that would raise the number?? That doesn't make any mathematical sense.. A higher age would mean fewer people?? No?? As far as the behaviors I speak of. If you're from my generation, you see what's happening in our youth.. our men are feminine, our women masculine. This term we started talking about is used to justify people having public outbursts, then making videos about how it was someone else's fault.. it a lack of acountability.. we all get restless. Some of us just control our better.. that's the work you mock.. learning about how your brain and emotions work, so you can navigate this existence better.. these labels have become excuses..
@pas.
@pas. 5 месяцев назад
@@199sick I did not say that mental health issues are excuses for bad behaviors. My argument is that certain things are harder to do for people nowadays (both for kids and adults), so I can relate to their hardships, but I'm not condoning their behavior. The diagnostic criterion change for ADHD means that now more people qualify. So the usual process is that a qualified professional conducts an assessment of the patient's history, that is they go through the symptoms listed in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) and - if possible - ask the patient's parents about when they first noticed this and that symptom. Before 2013 at least ~5 of the 9 symptoms had to be present before the age of 7. (So before 2013 if an 8 year old kid suddenly starts to interrupt others in school, forget what they wanted to convey as they speak, stop doing homework, daydream in class, ... and the parents take the kid to a psychologist, by the book they cannot diagnose the kid with ADHD ... but the APA (American Psychiatric Association - the editors and publishers of the DSM) realized that this limit is diagnostically very unhelpful, so they raised the limit from 7 to 12 ... which is still stupid for quite a few reasons, but ... at least this change was a step in the right direction.) There's a lot of performativity nowadays, including public outbursts, and shaming people for these outbursts, and so on. (You probably have seen videos of "Karens" - typically white women with extremely pushy and cringe behavior. Before that it was the Oppression Olympics, you might have seen these images/memes of Tumblr posts where the hyperwoke trigger-warning-mania SJW crowd trying to out-disability each other, who is more oppressed, who needs to check their privileges more, and so on. And there's the endless supply of hyper-masculine content too. The fetishization of suits, you might have heard about the "male fashion advice" wormhole, where insecure men post their photos - usually only neck down. Then there's the "intellectual" aspect of this, as men flock to sophisticated-sounding people who caress their confirmation bias like Jordan Peterson, or try to live vicariously through Andrew Tate and similar caricatures of manliness. ... And of course there's an even more complex rainbow of over-exaggerated behaviors in case of women.) It's important to distinguish the "newsworthy" (or social-media algorithm engagement-optimized) trends from the general society-wide trends. Because in general what's happening is kids getting more socially isolated, and in general people are very bad at controlling what type of content they consume, and they get stuck in echo chambers and in communities with very low-quality discourse. (Superficial connections, many times just sending funny pictures to each other online, or just posting things into the void, and without spending time real life face-to-face talking about their own interests, problems ... you know, lack of quality time.)
@199sick
@199sick 5 месяцев назад
@pas. I'm not sure if it cut you off?? It says read more, but won't pull up anymore text.. I can't say I disagree with anything you said.. these younger people are at much more of a disadvantage than we were. That's why I try to take the time to give them a different perspective when I can.. I wish someone could have reached me earlier.. I had to learn how to fight depression, so I know the DSM well.. but none of it is a reason not to learn about, understand, and conquer your problems..

No. If it’s overexposed, as in it has taken in too much detail, the detail is all lost. So literally either way you shake it, you are able to take in less detail overall. Even with the way you explained it. With film, if you overexpose it, that data is lost forever. You cannot fix it. Even with digital cameras if it’s overexposed to a certain degree, that data is kaput.
