Showing Medusa not as a vengeful monster but as a victim consumed by centuries of grudge was a stroke of genius. So many of the so-called "Monsters" and "Villains" in ancient Greece are just innocent people caught in the crossfire of tantrums between gods.

I did hear Medusa's story was created in Roman Era, mainly to make Athena look bitchier, since Rome was heavy on Mars religion. Since greeks had favoritism going on the protector of cities, and her counterpart, conquering god of war used to be less popular.

Agreed. Having so much focus on Sally being important to Percy was absolutely amazing. And focusing on the fact that "monsters" often enough were just humans that ended up getting punished by God's bc they're petty like that. I mean look at Arachne. I also like Annabeth and Percy genuinely fighting, just like Grover lashing out. Feels totally in place and connects you to the characters if you haven't read the books

I thought it was great too! Thinking back on the book, the chapter with medusa was probably one of the less exciting ones and I don't think it would translate well to screen. However, I thought the interaction with Alecto with Annabeth was SUPER weird. She's talking like she knows her really well and calls her one of the most formidable demigods, even though she has never gone on a quest? What? Other than that, it was great.
@2000....
@2000.... 4 месяца назад
@@grants5383well it was kinda explained in the same episode. Alecto was attacking Thalia, Luke, Annabeth and Grover when they fleed to Camp Half Blood. Annabeth survived that confrontation. Who knows how many heroes faced Alecto. But I guess not many survived, so Alecto gave her some kind of praise because she survived her attack. Of course you would believe/say someone must be special if he beats you, rather than say that you are bad and everyone could do it.

One thing I really like is how they are building up Luke’s arc of resenting the God’s. The portrayal of Medusa as someone who had been wronged as well as Percy and Annabeth mentioning their strained relationship with their godly parent throughout, I think it all foreshadows the conflict to come about if the gods are really the good guys very well. It certainly helps the viewers and Percy himself sympathise with Luke’s cause

I liked how the trio immediately figures out they entered Medusa's lair, it shows the characters being realistically aware and observant, and it also saves some much of the episode's runtime, rather then having them be annoyingly unaware of the obvious danger and wasting the runtime with building up a twist that all of us (those who've readied the books and those who haven't) already knows.

Percy didn’t really chose his companions in the book. Grover was essentially automatically on the team, stilled tasked with protecting Percy to qualify to become a searcher (they haven’t mentioned any of this yet in show); Annabeth was invisible and listening when Percy was given the quest as she had already volunteered since Percy is the special demigod she had to wait for to be allowed to see the world, and Percy knew right away who was crazy enough to volunteer was and didn’t question her joining. Basically all monsters regenerate in Tartarus and can never be permanently killed. This includes the Minotaur and Gorgons. Alecto is Hades’ right-hand Lieutenant so she gets out quicker, essentially immediately, to do his biding.

I didn't like it either! People saying Annabeth is so smart she should've known... Yes and no. Let's remember she is 12 years old and even though sure, she is smart, that is why there are 5 books in the first series. Character development. Also, they were all hungry and had fought some monsters so it was actually logical for them not to recognize or think about the place being a threat (yet I'm pretty sure Percy says it's probably a trap, but again, tell me you haven't been the quickest to react when hungry lol) Besides, not knowing what monster they were facing along the way and having to guess was so much better. It is even more logical than them knowing it's Medusa and STILL going inside. Now, THAT is something Annabeth would disapprove of. I reeeaaally hate how everything is thrown down the viewers' throats like it's nothing. Also, the Fury waiting outside and Medusa being killed so easy was so stupid and infuriating.

I believe the reason why Riordans' choice of extending some characters' sequences and changing some of the facts is the other way of his 'what if'. It has been years and years since those books were published and as an author, I believe there were some parts where he wanted to extend more or tell the story differently. He is using that chance and I'm all here for it. I'm so curious about the episode 'A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers'. I believe they made additions between Grover and Ares. The one who is portraying Ares also makes me feel excited even more. The show is getting better and better in each episode. Walker just owing those lines in such a Percy way, I love it!

I respectfully, but strongly disagree with you. The show is decent but has so far failed to capture the spirit of the books. The best and most loyal Percy Jackson content we have ever gotten was this Percy Jackson trailer by this youtuber named Beshoy. His tralier was absolute perfection and it blows both the movies and this tv show out of the water. I have several issues with this show. First of all, the pacing is horrible, the episodes are very rushed which forces important details to be either crammed in or cut out altogether, for example, the Ms.Dodds fight (the fight that is described in the books) and the Hellhound after Percy is claimed were absent. The editing at times is very choppy, and the cut to black scenes during intense moments kill any suspension. The tone of this series also fails to capture the spirit of the books, the books felt more mature than this. Everything is toned down to make it "Disney approved." Is this tv show a better adaptation that the Percy Jackson movie? Yes, but this tv show has also made me appreciate the movie more, especially when it comes to cgi and and fight scenes. I do however agree with you on Adam Copeland as Ares, he is a fantastic choice! Regardless dude, all the best, and happy new year! Yes I understand that it was a made up story to demoralize the Greeks and the original Greek myth had her born as a gorgon, but to that I say aren’t all myths made up stories? The PJO universe has shown multiple times that if there is a confliction between myths, the more popular myth is the one manifested, since all the gods and monsters are just manifestations of human will. This is explored and explained heavily in ToA, and since Ovid’s myth is wayy more popular than the original that’s the one that manifests

The pact of the Big 3 wasn't necessarily made because their children were too powerful, but because of the major prophecy describing how a child of the Big 3 would decide the fate of Olympus. Many things are different from the book, but I feel like all the changes feel right for this format and are coherent with the characers' personalities. I specifically love how they are including so many small details and extra explanations so that the show gives you the same feeling as the book did, so newcomers have all the background information (i. e. Thalia) and whatever comes next hits them just like it did for those who read the books. Also, the cheesy song was SO in-character for Grover!

I like how Annabeth and Medusa argue about what really happened on the events of Medusa's story. Not only does it show Annabeth's faith to her mom, but it also shows the detail that Medusa's story in the myth has multiple versions of what happened. Nice touch, I like it!

BEST 👏🏻 EPISODE 👏🏻 SO 👏🏻 FAR. All the trio scenes gave me great nostalgia for the beginning of Harry, Ron and Hermione's friendship when they didn't really like Hermione but ended the Halloween chapter with the iconic: "There are some things you can't share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them." That's what I felt at the end of this episode with that beautiful dialogue after Medusa's death.

This is by far the best episode. I loved how they talked about monsters as they slowly showed the furies. The whole transition from that to Medusa was beautiful, and that portrayal of Medusa is honestly better than the book. The best part, however, is LIN MANUEL MIRANDA HUMMING ARTHUR’S THEME BY CHRISTOPHER CROSS AND THEN THE OUTRO PLAYING IT IN FULL!!!! I am literally almost in tears over this as it is one of my most favorite songs from when I was little and it has been especially interesting with me being a gen z teen growing up with and listening to that era of music way more than anything else my generation listens too. In fact, one of the only songs from this past decade I actually listen to is Riptide🤣. Never in my wildest dreams would I think that Christopher cross music would be in Percy Jackson! It makes perfect sense with the elevator playing that style of music both in the books and the show but I am just overjoyed! Now my generation will actually be aware of that song, as I have yet to meet a single person my age that knows who Christopher cross is. But now they will

i feel like many people kinda miss the points about Medusa... if my memory serves me well then Medusa was also shown as a sort of victim in the book (without actually saying the words victim), but the main point here is that regardless of her past, tragic as it may be, she still is a monster.. all of the terrified people turned to stone are there to remind us that Medusa is killing anyone that stumbles her way, not only killing them but doing it while terrfying them in the process, maybe she was a victim but in the thousands of years since she definitely turned into a monster that earned her reputation. also going unsaid in the episode is the reminder that the story Medusa tells is with bias to attract sympathy, the curse was given to her because she slept (willing or unwilling depend on who tells the myth) with Posidon in Athena's temple, the temple being defiled is the reason for Athena's anger not Medusa falling for Posidon or something like that.

As some people in tumblr point out, and I wholly agree with them, is that abuse isn’t always in your face. It could be subtle. In this case Sally is the only one that works in that household. Gabe is probably using her money and he has the living room how he wants it. Book Percy just thought that Gabe was just an asshole. But almost near the end it dawned on him that Gabe physically abused his mom. It’s what inspired him to give Medusa’s head to her. He wanted to give her that power. I imagine tv series wise we the audience discover how truly abuse Gabe is along with him. Plus that abusive people can come across as “likable.”

@@moondivine2288 your right, we didn't know fully until coming down the end where Sally flinched when Gabe raised his hand at her and Percy then realizes Gabes been hitting his mom but only when Percy isn't around, that's what made him mention Medusa head and also made him remind his mom what Poseidon said, "A queen among women" - which in turn made Sally remember her own worth. So maybe we might get that part, I hope we do.

I definitely understand your point; it’ll be interesting to see what Rick does with the character as the season progresses but I think his primary reason for toning Gabe down is that this show is primarily supposed to be for children so he wants to be mindful of what they are seeing on screen and what the underage actors are doing on set. I also believe this is why he turned Medusa invisible for cutting off her head.

It’s interesting watching your videos and MythologyGuys ones breaking down these episodes back to back. You two are very die hard Percy Jackson fans and it’s interesting to see how your reactions and perceptions of the show differ so far. So much of this series seems to have fans either really like it or dislike it depending on their preferences. I like it so far but I honestly think they should have made 10-12 episodes instead of 8. The pacing feels really rushed and things aren’t really explained for non book readers so they’re missing lots of context (for example Sallys blue food she gave to Percy was never explained).

I’ve been rereading the books, and my main issue with this episode is how much they argued, or at least how angry they were with each other - in the books it was more bickering. But I guess it’s because they had to cut Percy and Annabeth at camp together before the quest so they had to do relationship building during the quest.

I really enjoyed this episode for the most part. I liked the addition of Grover trying to act as a sort of intermediary between Percy and Annabeth, and I thought his awkward friendship song was also pretty funny 😂. I also liked that the show went for a more nuanced portrayal of Medusa, especially considering that in some versions of the myth Poseidon rapes her, but Athena chooses to curse her anyway. I thought the expanded backstory for Uncle Ferdinand was a nice touch. Percy's comments about the Oracle and Thalia were pretty hysterical 😂. And overall, I really liked how this episode set up the main trio's dynamic. The first of my only real complaints was that I didn't think the previous episode did a good enough job of establishing Percy and Annabeth's initial animosity toward one another, so it felt kind of out of nowhere here, but Walker and Leah's acting more than made up for it in opinion. I was also a bit confused by Percy's decision to mail Medusa's head to Olympus, but maybe that's just a me problem 🤷‍♀️

These episodes really centralize the whole theme of the series, whether the Gods are really worth saving, cause the child of the big three holds the power to bring Olympus down and seeing how Percy is hearing all of the Gods being just terrible really makes his decisions to be on their side a very hard choice especially given how Thalia was struggling with that decision given how tempted she was to kill "Bessie the sea cow" and Nico was still didn’t get over his sister's death which was indirectly done by the gods.

I like the series so far. I just wish everything wasn't so rushed. Medusa's reveal being so quick really undercut the episode for me, as Grover finding his uncle petrified and musing about it before realizing was always the part of that chapter that sent shivers down my spine. It put into perspective how easy they were to trick and manipulate (the smell of food, a friendly conversation), and how they'd have to be on their guard no matter what. That being said, I love Annabeth being the one to figure it out. They're really leaning into "the smartest girl with all the plans and knowledge you could ever need" and I'm here for it.

“Alecto offered to help our quest if I gave up you to her” “What’d you say?” “I killed her sister” “Medusa offered to help me save my mom if I turned in the two of you” “What’d you say?” “I cut off her head” Man this sequence was just… chef’s kiss 👌🏻 Also, I like this version of Medusa better than the books, mainly because it matches the Greek mythology I’ve read. Medusa was loyal to Athena, but Poseidon took advantage of her, and Athena decided to punish Medusa, not Poseidon. In the books, Medusa is depicted as a villain, which kind of makes you think Athena was right, which she was not.

I also really enjoyed this episode. Although when the trio go to Aunty Em’s Gnome Emporium and meet Medusa, I was hoping it was going to be a little longer than it was, but I still really enjoyed the episode. It was really cool using Annabeth’s invisibility cap to kill Medusa. I also really liked the story change of Medusa making her a victim of bullying. It made a lot of sense as to why Percy’s mother often told him her story. It could be why he has an aversion to bullying. Another part I really loved as well was the bickering between Percy and Annabeth. It was done perfectly. We’re really seeing the beginning of their relationship and I just love it. I can’t wait to see the Waterland scene and the hug they share at the end. It was a really good episode. I rate it a 9/10.

Really loves this episode, a step up from the last two which felt a bit rushed, i like that they figure out who Medusa was cause it's clear that nowadays everyone knows the myth as she's a very famous monster. That being said her introduction and the way she mention what Athena did to her and calling Poseidon a monster shows the new side, the one most people talk about, her being a victim but that doesn’t stop her from wanting to hurt people as we can tell by those statues hidden underneath. Annabeth and Percy fighting is so hilarious and Grover being the middle man really made it all the best. I can’t wait to see the two of them finally talk and where Percy learns why Annabeth is hostile towards him, Athena holding a grudge with Poseidon. I really like the colouring of the show, it's bright and not dull like some shows which makes it feel this magical aspect of America where monsters and gods live.

Never thought I'd say this, but Disney did it right. For once, after Indy, Star Wars, and most of their live action remakes, this worked far better than the original movie adaptations, and makes me wanting more. Though I don't like to wait, I think they did right by not putting the entire series out at once. I wish they had followed to books description of the Demigod's eyes. The books constantly refer to Annabeth's "stormy grey eyes" and Percy's "Sea Green eyes" and I always imagined their eyes as like a special hint to their godly parentage. Like I dont think their eyes shouldnt look like human eyes, but i wish that the colors were just on the line of natural and supernatural in the coloring to hint at their Godly parents and Im bummed they just left them the color of the actor's eyes. would have been a cool detail imo. Same thing in the Harry Potter movies and I get that colored contacts dont work for everyone like Daniel Radcliffe but like Morgan has said this show has an insane budget and I dont think changing Percy's eyes sea green and Annabeth's eyes grey would have been too difficult to do.

The budget goes to the CGI, we all know that. How many more monsters are we going to meet in the upcoming episodes that will require money for CGI. What we can hope for is for this to be successful so that we get a 2nd season with a bigger budget for better CGI.

If that's not Blackjack, then its just another pegasus of the same color. the cgi on the winged shoes was cool, but only cause I grew seeing them (all Hermes shoes/sandals) with the wings in between the ankles and heels, with 2 on each foot, I not sure with one wing per foot and on the top base. While the movies aren't cannon, but just for comparisons. Medusa was just like in the book, nice and kind in her own strange way. Whereas Uma was a sinster villainess. Her snakehair looks like a 50's hair style since they don't move around much. Fyi, most know the story that Poseidon raped her, but in 1981 Clash of the Titans and Rick Riodanverse used the alternate version that the 2 were lovers. And Rick maintains the human legs form, cause that classical movie is why gorgans have snake tails. As that's part of the og myth, legs, not tails.
