Definitely. The first 3 weren't really my cup of tea. They either changed too much (3) or were too slow with not much pay off and not great characters (1&2). This is pretty much exactly how I imagined this part of the book playing out and even the parts that weren't from the book felt exactly like they were.

I actually like how they’ve made Percy more of a child in this series. Like he’s not gonna just adapt to being a Demigod in a week. He’s def gonna be scared. Even with doing the swimming lessons. He’s gonna be afraid when it’s his fist time in deep water-like most kids-I’m extremely happy with this showwww 😊😊

That's the good thing with live action adaptations that the book can't really show us, because everything is left to our imagination. In the show, we actually see a kid, being in danger, and looking exhausted and sick while trying to fight a huge monster. It hits differently when you can see it rather than just imagine it.

i think Annabeth snapping back at the cop twice kind of showcases her fatal flaw of hubris. she is the smartest person in the book, but her hubris sometimes holds her back, even if she should know better than to push it with the cop. Other than that, I absolutely agree with this being one of the best episodes so far. The CGI was some of the best i've ever seen, the mistake with the Arch was handled beautifully, and the plot changes reflects how this show is absolutely a love letter to the books. The respect and effort put into this show makes me so happy after the betrayal of the movies.

I actually really loved the parallel they drew between Medusa saying she 'embarrassed' Athena so she was punished and changed into monster and how Annabeth "embarassed" Athena by 'going along' with Percy's plan to send Medusa's head and she punished her over that silly thing by leaving her to die! That actually showed that her saying her mother is Just is not entirely right and how petty the God's can get over something as silly as wounded pride, enough to not hesistate to let them die! Also I absolutely loved the character development they showed in all three leads esp Percy. When he pulled Annabeth to safety and risked his own life, showing his bravery, his compassion and his determination!

And the addition of a child of Athena building the St. Louis Arch was a nice touch, as it would make sense, considering some of her children are into architecture. And the teaser for the next episode showed THE THREE FATES! And about Annabeth snapping a second time back at the police officer, I saw it as her fatal flaw of pride getting to her, which has happened in the books.

One of the things I absolutely love in the show is how they make the trio completely aware of the monsters. Because in the books they usually don’t recognise the monsters until much later and then get themselves into situations where they have to fight kinda on accident. But in the show they are fully aware of the monsters and situations they are in so it makes it all 100000% more suspenseful. And it really shows just how smart and mature the trio is. They are children so obviously they will have their childish moments but they are also warriors on a quest literally fighting for their life. I love how Annabeth is immediately aware of the monsters and has a plan for what to do. It feels so in character. And with Percy not just coincidentally having to stay behind and fight but rather him willing choosing too knowing full well all the danger because it really shows just how loyal, brave and willing too put his friends first he is. All the changes the show is making add so so so so so so much to the characters and suspense.

They changed Medusa's story to be more in line with the actual story of Medusa from Greek myth. In Ovid's Metamorphoses, Medusa was a follower of Athena, and Poseidon did some not so nice things to her in the Temple of Athena, and Athena punished her for it by turning her into the monster. I think the show handled that so incredibly well, considering the story of Medusa is pretty heavy for a kid's show. They alluded to the real story perfectly, and that episode will probably stay my favorite because of how they handled her new appearance. It really shows that not only does Riordan know his Greek myth, but he seems to only be making changes that make the story more impactful and powerful, and I love it.

Not to say that the rest of the episodes didn't have good quality, but that this episode was a step up. For me, the performances felt all that much better and the writing seemed really good too. I do share your grievances about the length of the fight scenes in this show. This episode was only 30 minutes long, and do get that the Chimera was probably quite expensive from a visual effects stand point, but it would have been nice to have a somewhat longer fight scene. One thing I disagree with you on is Annabeth's actions when talking to the police, and you saying she went a bit far. I get where you come from, but I feel like we do see something very similar (spoilers ahead) in the Battle of the Labyrinth with Annabeth's interaction with the Sphinx and how she went so far as to nearly get them killed.

I am thoroughly impressed with these first 4 episodes. The seeds have been planted for the next 4 seasons, and Rick definitely seems to have spent all of this time meticulously picking through the series as a whole to see the best way to adapt it for a series. This might also have to do with talented producers (beyond his wife ofc) that seem to really care and know or want to know about the series as a whole. Like I’m sure this was pitched as a 5 season show but this first is just a test.

Honestly I totally agree with you for most of this, I love the character development between annabeth and Percy and the cinematography is incredible however one thing I wish we saw more of was the theme of the characters finally thinking they caught a break but then get thrown into danger again. We aldredy missed this when they immediately found out who Medusa was and again here. While the changes are great and I love that echidna has extra screen time I wish they could have made a parallel scene of the kids just goofing off in the train or doing something for fun and not realising the seriousness of their situation momentarily as I feel it adds a sense of much required naïveté that shows us more that they are just children who get can make mistakes because it’s easy to forget that when they are back to back killing monsters and surviving impossible situations

You know you making that mistake thinking it's Hades is exactly what Percy did when retelling his dreams to Annabeth and Grover, so you and other viewers along with Percy are kind of thrown off thinking the villian is Hades when in fact it's Kronos holds up some merit to the show doing this dream sequence

I think the show has been steadily improving. Imo this is the best out of the 4 episodes so far. I loooove Percy's fake out and sacrifice. Really showcases at one of his key characteristics that we'll find out more about later. When I watched that scene I was super excited to see what you'll say about it in your review :) Story so far (because I binged all 4 eps and have lots of thoughts): I was quite turned off by Grover's snitching in the first episode, but he has been steadily gro(v)ing on me. I wasn't the biggest fan of some of Sally's inclusions in the first episode, but I liked the inclusions in this one. The main issues with the additions in the first episode, was that she was supposed to keep Percy from realizing his identity for as long as possible, because monsters would be more drawn to him if he knew, so she wouldn't be telling him stories that might clue him in. Correct me if I'm wrong. Not to mention, one of my favourite parts of the first book was the suspense of Percy getting to know that he's a demigod. I wish they had built up the weird things happening around him like Mrs Dodds, the fates and the minotaur before he gets told about it. Sally's inclusions in this episode just showed how wholesome and kind she is, so I loved that. Percy has been so great from the start! Annabeth has been great for the past two episodes as well. There's a ton I could potentially nitpick, but I like the overall vibe. I think that's what makes these stand out from the movies that shall not be named (well, one of the reasons anyway). I do agree that the action sequences ought to be longer, I also think they should have more urgency. The universe feels lived in though and the characters have chemistry. I think it feels a little darker than the books, but that's probably just because we don't hear Percy's inner monologue. They make up for this by adding silly jokes though. They could add more quipping - Walker could certainly pull it off since he's a mini Ryan Reynolds. I think the choice to bash on the gods this early is pretty interesting. I can't elaborate too much without spoiling, but I do think this choice might make the ultimate conflict of the story more sympathetic. Also, most of the conflicts in Greek mythology really are caused by the gods either their hubris or their libido, and then they dip out after causing mayhem - so that checks out. There are a lot of cool parallels - like Medusa and Annabeth both being punished by Athena for something they were not responsible for (also Medusa's story here was closer to the original myth, which was cool). Echidna and Sally both looking out for their kids and trying to protect them. Both also really play into Sally's comment from the first episode about how not everyone who looks like a monster is a monster and not everyone who looks like a hero is a hero. This will go on to apply to lots of characters in the series. Speaking of Medusa, I loved the different way the killed her in episode 3. Not only was that a really clever idea from Annabeth, I could also imagine the script writers reading the scene and going "... this woman is getting decapitated you say? How tf are we going to make this PG??" Rant over. -I am not usually brave enough to leave comments please be nice :)-

I agree with Sally telling Percy about the myths, in the books he didn't know anything about Greek Gods and the creatures, it was like a learning lesson for both him and us and also him not knowing who some monsters really pissed off some monsters they got offended and Percy took advantage of that 😅

In the book when they were in the truck with the zebra annabeth said she would fight by Percy’s side if the gods went to war but I feel like the show is doing such a better job at fleshing out their relationship. Percy is showing annabeth that the love and loyalty he has for his friends is unconditional while she’s learning that Athena’s pride/love for her IS conditional. This episode is definitely my favorite at 9/10. Literally my only complaint is that ths chimera fight felt really clipped and cut off, also in the books, i liked the idea of percy asking for his dads help for the first time, knowing that he needed healing and jumping out of the arch himself while praying for healing from the river. I think having him being thrown through the hole sort of ruined that first moment of faith, but if that's my biggest complaint, the show did an amazing job. I also didn't like how short it was, but it makes sense to end the episode there. However, they definitely should have made the fight longer. That would fix most of the problems i had with this episode.

Really strong episode: 9.5/10 for me! Loved the changes that they made. So happy to see Percy and Annabeth get to know each other better and start to bond! Also, loved to hear Annabeth talk about architecture. The CGI of the Chimera is amazing, almost completely accurate to the book description: "the head of a lion with a blood-caked mane, the body and hooves of a giant goat, and a serpent for a tail". The show went for: head of lion with goat horns, half body of lion, half body of a goat and reptilian tail. I didn't even notice the back legs have hooves until the second watch. Leah & Walker blessing us with some amazing acting! Percy didn't "plunge" to his death even tho that's the episode title. He "falls" which is a nice twist and also Rick rectifying his mistake/ PS: Athena is the Goddess of wisdom, math, strategy, warfare and intelligence. Ares is the God of War. An important difference.

Usually when adaptations change a lot of stuff from the source material it messes up the show but so far the pjo series is doing the absolute best job at handling all the changes too the point where it actually makes it feel a lil better then the books in a way. There are a bunch of changes but they are all still so faithful to the books and feel so in character that I’m convinced they actually happened in the books. Even with the changes it still feels like Percy Jackson through and through. They don’t change or mess up any of the important key facts that make Percy Jackson what it is but instead most of the changes just feel like great add on’s that make the story better and fixes all the mistakes. The changes also add so so so so so much too the characters and suspense. With them knowing who the monster is immediately the danger is next level. With Annabeth having a plan and knowing where to go and the St. Louis arch being an Athena temple, it really shows just how smart Annabeth is and it adds to the world building. With Percy willing staying behind to fight showing just how loyal and brave he is. With them having all those lil dialogues and conversations showing so much off their character and making it really emotional. With them knowing who the monsters are immediately so they even have time to flesh out the monsters and give them a character. All the changes are handedly phenomenally and I just know this is Uncle Rick tweaking all the things in the book that he wanted too after all these years too make the story better.

books are a bit fast paced too (i recently learned that it's because they were for authors kid that has adhd), but I agree. I think the problem is with how short episodes are, idk why nowadays everyone is so afraid to make longer tv episodes, the show would def benefit from having more runtime to give viewers a breather. It feels like it was meant to be that way until they cut a lot of "filler" to fit that 30 minutes episode length, hopefully they will take that into mind in future seasons

Your review is Spot On! However, what I didn't like in this episode was the lack of urgency. The trio was walking instead of running from the Chimera and the mother of monsters. Also, I don't know if I fully buy that Thalia wouldn't protect a runaway 7-year-old demigod right away, I feel she would have a sense of protection from the first moment.

I saw somebody from Tumblr that the reason why Thalia was guarded up abt Annabeth was that, knowing her personality is and how bad on terms they were with her mother when she left, I think she feels guilty most of the time and why she couldn't do anything about her brother and she doesn't want to make the same mistake to her.(and she didn't at that time, although she did lost his brother twice) And I think it makes sense, she had a bit of resentment towards the gods in the books. (I'm assuming you've read the books, but if not, she has a younger brother that's around the same age as Annabeth and her mother sacrificed him as an offering to the gods)

I also thought that episode 4 was the best episode and definitely my favorite. There were so many things I loved about the episode. I really liked how they added the part of Percy noticing the centaurs while riding the Amtrak. As soon as I saw it, I remembered reading it in the book and it was very nicely done. It wasn’t exactly close to the book with the youngest centaur waving at Percy but I still really liked that it was added. I also really liked how Percy and Annabeth talked about their parents and bonded a little bit. But one of my favorite scenes in the whole episode was when Percy took Annabeth’s place and was willing to sacrifice himself to fight the Chimera even though he was injured. It was just really nice how we got to see a little bit of Percy’s greatest flaw which is excessive personal loyalty. I also thought Percy jumping off the Gateway Arch and Poseidon saving him from the fall and that he does care and that he’s watched him his whole life was such a nice touch. We didn’t get a lot of those scenes in the book. My rating is 9/10. 😊💙
