Ever heard the phrase, “I’m going to check your pockets.” Well, today, I am explaining what and why we perform periodontal probing.
This is the one simple procedure to check how healthy your mouth is. It is typically done once a year, but can be done twice. It is one of he first procedures done when you are a new patient to an office. This determines if you have gingivitis or periodontitis.
Any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. 😷🦷

I am so happy I have found your videos. I was at my dentist practice for many years and they never mentioned periodontitis to me, despite going for regular cleanings and appointments. I recently changed over to a different dental practice, and they have found that I have periodontitis (explains the bad breath I have suffered with for 3 years!) In your opinion would you say that this is negligence from my first dental practice?

Ha ha ‘why am I smiling, it’s not funny’ 🤣 I love your passion for bleeding gums. So I started using a water flosser since watching your channel. And I’ve been probed, deepest was a 5mm at the very back of the mouth, no bleeding. How deep below the gum line can a water flossing clean? I’ll will obviously be going back to the hygienist often now. X

With the standard tip on the waterpik, it can reach up to 7mm under the gum into the perio pocket 😷

Great video!! Question: I had some 5’s and lots of bleeding 6 months ago- I started using a water flosser daily and 3 months ago my worst numbers were 4’s and almost no bleeding - can my gums improve more? Can I get to 3’s or less? Your water flossing video really helped me!! I need to watch again but I wonder, do I want to target my water stream from the flosser DOWN into the gums? I feel like that could force food and bacteria down deeper… thanks again!! Very very helpful!! You’re very likable 😊🌸🌺☘️
@holistichygiene

I’m super happy the video helped!! Yes your guns could still improve with consistent use. Make sure your brushing for a full two minutes 2 times daily. And no need to point the stream DOWN into the gums. It does all the work with the stream pointed straight at the tooth, 90° angle, at a 6/7. They waterpik creates enough pressure to “suck” out all the bacteria and food debris. And it will not force anything into the gums. It will flush everything out as designed.

I wish I found you earlier!! My dentist did some probing and all my teeth were maximum of 2mm except one which is 5mm. Is this normal? Hygienist said she’s happy with the health of my gums but she was unsure why only one tooth had a 5mm pocket! Thank you!!!
@holistichygiene
@holistichygiene Год назад
This is excellent! With the one 5mm pocket, there could be a tiny piece of residual tartar under the gumline or residual bacteria in the area. I would waterpik well. Maybe ask the hygienist if she would get in that area and clean it very well and see how it heals at your next dental appointment 😷🦷

The Dentist recommends a deep clean. I have pain in one upper middle tooth on and off for months. X rays are normal. Antibiotics took away pain 99% waiting for second opinion. Dentist mentioned maybe a root canal. Any suggestions?
@holistichygiene
@holistichygiene 11 месяцев назад
Get your gums healthy. Get the scaling and root planning. As for the painful tooth, there is either an infection from the gums or something deeper. The periodontal therapy should resolve it, IF the pain is associated with the infected gum tissue. If there is a deeper issue within the tooth, then more treatment is needed. Which can range from a filling, root canal, crown, etc. That all depends on what the dentist diagnoses and states what the exact problem is.

@@holistichygiene My miniature poodle was “sort” of ok with brushing when he was a puppy. But as he matured if got much harder to get him to sit still, and get the brush inside his mouth. Just pushing the side of his mouth up I was amazed at the Tatar build up. Subsequently I have a small box filled with his teeth from extractions. Would a dog oral examination be the same as a human one? Just curious 🧐

@@MrStukaju87d I think so. I don’t think they go as in depth, but they do take X-ray and clean similar to humans, even similar instruments. I know they have to put dogs to sleep to clean their teeth. So I have a few questions. I had a scaling done in 2018 after being diagnosed with gingivitis. And they never explained any sort of gingivitis specific followup plan besides prescription toothpaste. Then I moved to a different state and went to a dentist who just said everything looked fine. I had been told previously I would need a crown soon and had a cavity but then this guy told me everything was fine even though I was literally asking for something to be wrong. And then he told me now that I'm in my 30s I should just expect teeth to deteriorate and not get cavities filled. WTF. I just told myself it must have been the miracle toothpaste. THEN I go to a new dentist a few months ago and they measure and now I have a 6mm pocket on one side of one tooth. And they find the cavity and mention the crown. They also explain that after that initial scaling, I should have gone back and had it done in a series so that the pockets would have had a proper chance to reattach by being routinely cleaned out. That dentist was awesome. But unfortunately I moved again! Before accomplishing anything. And I am now in Austin and looking for a new Dentist. Does all this sound correct? That last bit anyway. I just want to be prepared going into my next appointment so I don't end up with a guy like the one I mentioned. Thanks for your videos, they rock!
@l.ashleypalmer
@l.ashleypalmer 2 года назад
Also, is there a chance the 6 measurement could have been wrong if I had some notable swelling that day? I rarely have swollen or sensitive areas anymore but I do believe that day I did have some around the tooth. I imagine with swollen gums the measurement tool could measure the gum line as higher. If that makes sense. Ever since the first scaling in 2018 I use prescription toothpaste once a day and an electric toothbrush twice a day and have noticed my gums become so much healthier. But I haven't been as consistent about flossing. To be honest, I carry around a floss pik and floss the specific problem areas after every meal. Which then makes me feel like I can skip the AM/PM flossing routine. Although I just got a waterpik today and watched your video so I'm excited about that now! I found an excuse to do it twice today. Is twice too much? Oh the things I now find exciting to do in my 30s 🙄

I love how you know your body and are listening to it and thinking! A lot to unpack here. To start, all dentists and hygienists are different in the way they treatment plan. Some are aggressive and others are passive. Yes after your scaling, you should have been placed on a 3 month recall for at least a year to make sure your gingivitis reversed and stayed stable. Depending on how much plaque and tartar you build along with your homecare habits, this directly relates to the amount of bacteria getting removed on a consistent daily basis. Being a good flosser plays a major role in that. Getting in the problem areas is excellent while on the go and important, all other teeth are being neglected. They want some love and attention too. But I know using the waterpik will keep you healthy for sure! It’s recommended once a day, but you are more than welcome to use it twice. There is no contraindication to that. Only benefits. I have multiple patients use it 2 x a day. I ALWAYS praise them for it. Because it is not the norm. As for the cavity and crown, again this goes back to the dentist. You can have very small decay that may have not changed and has not penetrated your enamel, this can stay this way for years with consistent removal of the bacteria to not allow it to continue to eat through the tooth. As for the crown, there could be many reasons you need one. I can offer to ask questions. Pick their brain as to why or why not they want to treat the teeth being mentioned. Don’t hesitate to ask. If they don’t want to answer or rush you, I would sadly say find another dentist who will take the time to answer your questions and help you understand why, so you can only help yourself for life. Hope I answered everything. If not, please reach out again 😷 One more thing…yes, when having gingivitis or periodontitis, inflammation in general, your gum tissue swells and can cause pocket readings to be deeper. When ALL the bacteria is removed, the gums heal, shrink, and tighten. Swelling goes down, bleeding stops, bone loss stops, infection goes away, healthy happens.

@holistichygiene
@holistichygiene 2 года назад
Canines are the longest tooth we have. They are naturally “darker.” They are the cornerstones of the mouth. This is the area where the teeth curve to the back of the mouth. Light hits all the teeth different. The front teeth always look lighter/whiter than the back teeth. It’s light and shadows. Plus, some teeth are more transparent then others. My enamel is more transparent than many other people. I can put my tongue on the back of my front teeth and they change color. I’ve seen some beautiful opaque teeth in my years that I admire. You can always whiten your teeth. Best OTC product are crest white strips, or I would go to your dentist and have whitening trays made and do it professionally.
