"It sounds like 2 different songs to me." Welcome to djent. We have punch, cookies, and odd time signatures with disparate rhythm lines. Help yourselves to all 3.
@thomasl.4482
@thomasl.4482 5 лет назад
I understand what you're saying fellas. Music like periphery, dream theater, oceans ate alaska, opeth, etc., they're things you graduate up to and it's not exactly for everyone. Anyone can headbang to a five finger death punch song or Metallica. They have mass appeal. Nothing too complicated, just verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus end. Maybe a tempo change up here and there. Progressive metal is a journey and in general appeals to technical musicians. This hails back to your question "if a song needs to be listened to a lot of times to be appreciated, is it actually good?" Absolutely. Just like a great movie or book has new things to be appreciated by subsequent consuming, so too does great music. Keep consuming my friends. It will click.
@devononair
@devononair 5 лет назад
That's an interesting way of putting it. Complexity makes things harder to appreciate at first glance, but makes it more rewarding on further listens, whereas simple songs become boring after a few listens.
@thomasl.4482
@thomasl.4482 5 лет назад
@@devononair exactly. It's the difference between reading Harry Potter or reading Tolkien or Brandon Sanderson. Both are good, but the complexity adds many layers to digest and appreciate or not as you will. That's not to say a simple song doesn't also have appeal, but....idk, it's like classical music. There's a reason why nearly every accomplished pianist likes classical music. It's the best showcase of skill for the instrument aside from perhaps progressive jazz. So too is progressive metal for guitarists and usually drummers.
@deadboy276
@deadboy276 5 лет назад
An elitist perspective. In reality, Periphery is just boring droll with a terrible choice in vocal style (as with most prog metal). The bands who have done it right have their spot in fame and appreciation. If you want actual infectious groove with technical and heavy appeal, listen to Atheist. Not watered down garbage like Periphery.
@atruescotsmanuth2481

@@deadboy276 Periphery is pretty bad imo, they are wayyyy too robotic and clean, and the vocals don't fit the music.
@andromedaiscoming185
@andromedaiscoming185 5 лет назад
Mason Rogers hey dude, so I just went and listened to unquestionable presence from Atheist, about 3 songs. all I can say is dude that might as well be a completely different genre from periphery, entirely. Not even in the same ballpark no scratch that not in the same sport like considering cricket and basketball similar because they both use round balls. I know we all want to claim the title of metal like its a belt and were in the wwe or something, on paper its similar, its progressive and there's a screamer and drums and guitar solos but respectfully that shit was unlistenable to me. Nasty ugly garage sound thrash with a shrieker that has no interesting range and thrashy riffs that do nothing beautiful or interesting, we can both say we like metal but we might as well be saying we both like food and music, it doesn't mean anything the taste is galaxies apart.

Agreed. I don’t think Misha did Periphery right by suggesting this song. I love it personally, but I think you have to be a bit further along in the “acquiring” of the metal taste to appreciate it. Meanwhile, The Bad Thing is heavy, has some really good moments for the band to shine, and is just generally more palatable to the general population. It’s a good gateway song into the rest of their discography.

Periphery is such a sonically diverse band. They have their style which you can hear in every song, but they are so talented that they can change up their sound as they want to. The funny thing is you guys kept talking about liking the parts that are slower and more methodical but keeps progressing, and I think I’m that case the Periphery song that fits that is Absolomb. I know it’s a bit of a stretch to ask for ANOTHER shot at periphery haha, but I think you guys should check out that song whether it’s on the channel or on your free time. I was a lot like you guys with periphery it took me a while to completely get into their music (which is similar for most progressive bands) but I found absolomb and from there fell in love with the band. Keep being free thinkers and rock on 🤘

yeah, and also to be noted Juggernaut is a concept double album telling a story. The ending of Stranger Things trails back to the intro of Juggernaut: Alpha, and has a lot of thought and care put in to bring it all to a circle... creative!

Here's the thing about this song, with this entire double album, you really cannot listen to any single song alone due to how they're formatted and blend and bleed together. This is extremely important, Alpha and Omega are a concept double album. Start at the beginning of Alpha and go through to the end of Omega, front to back, you'll understand the transitions a bit better, you'll understand the repeated themes and repeated riffs throughout the album, etc etc. I think if you do, you'll appreciate the entire song more. Also, do pay attention to the lyrics. I am biased in thinking that Alpha and Omega are an absolute masterpiece of a project, but even with that, I do think having the whole picture will help in this case.
@HugoStiglitz88

One of their best tracks. It represents so many of the elements that this band is about. This is going to make a lot of folks happy and is bound to inspire a bunch of strong opinions. Note: This is part of a concept double album, so theres an entire story that preceded this track. In context, this track is even more impactful. Also the copy of the track you got is definitely not true to how it is mixed, it should not sound muffled like that. Their album mixing is exceptional. Thanks for the review as always, The Way The News Goes, Lune, and Absolomb from their latest album P3 are great standalone tracks to check out. Much more “harnessed” 🤣 Peace!

That's kind of the problem with them listening to prog songs when they're from a concept album, the songs aren't written like normal songs because the album is basically 1 long song. References to earlier progressions or entire songs that pop up, if you haven't heard the previous songs then you won't notice and it'll seem completely out of place

The best thing about Periphery, and songs like Stranger Things, is that after probably 100+ listens, I STILL find new things to love about their music. Stranger Things is a masterpiece in my opinion, and I fall more in love with it every single time I listen. Even watching this review, you guys picked up on things that I never have, and I've heard it played live 4 times, and listened to it on my own easily 100+ times. I love your analyses because they perfectly explain how I feel when I pick up a new prog metal band; sometimes it takes a little time to fully appreciate the depth and "chaos" that the bands and their fans love so much, Periphery is one of those bands. I agree that a 3rd reaction is unlikely, but listening to a "cohesive" song from P3 would really show the Lost in Vegas boys how the band has progressed.

Yeah, i'm glad they gave periphery a 2nd chance and even got hit up by misha (which is awesome). But, I hope they try another one (even if it never happens) I'd be down to see them react to flatline or the way news goes. P3 really shows there progression and how far they've come.

Periphery - Lune, that'll be your playlist song. About the most atmospheric and ethereal song they have. Even as a fan of Periphery I agree with the reaction to a point. Some of the more brutal and "out there" sections can be a lot to take in even for those of us who listen to a lot of metal and prog. Then again, it's also a part of the reason they have such a nice following. Lots of music out there and they have managed to carve out their own thing, kudos for that. I love Stranger Things and a lot of the other songs that keep a nice balance between melodic hooks and the heavy riffs.

The song is in 4/4. The guitar syncopating becomes confusing if you aren't nodding along to the drummers cymbals.
@colinmitchell6006
@colinmitchell6006 5 лет назад
A lot of modern metal doesn't really rely on the snare on 2 and 4 of a bar, so cymbals are definitely the time keepers for sure. Also, yeah a lot of time I see people who lose the timing of the groove, they should think of groove in double time and they will catch the groove again. Hip hop will train you to hear the back beat at half tempo on 2 and 4 a lot so it's no wonder there are times Ryan or george loose track of the grooves if they aren't used to that specifically. Best way to solve this, go to live shows with live drummers. It's much much easier to pick out the beats, and the groove. Another issue, Periphery's drummer plays off 16th notes mostly. Not typical 8th note beats like regular metal, or 1/4 note accented beats like most hip hop and pop. This would lead someone who is very not used to that groove to get lost cause 16th notes are "a lot to take in". Throw in 16th beats more than other notation and poly rhythmic elements on your track You'll throw off a untrained ear instantly. Again, it's not hard to understand these rhythms more, it's a matter of exposure imo. Especially watching and feeling a live drummer like Periphery's in person.

A quick note on the cohesiveness: this is last song on a double-feature album "Juggernaut: alpha" and "Juggernaut: omega". The sudden change and the facemelting riff at 4:13 of this video is actually a faster version of the riff from Four Lights, off the alpha album, a 2 minute instrumental piece. So in the context of the whole album, that was more of a throwback, a welcome addition. They actually did the same thing with Rainbow Gravity and Psychosphere.

The thing about periphery and a lot of other metal bands is that they are there to strive to break the stride and and constantly put out different material. Independently all the musicians of the band have different perspectives but they blend them very well. Transitions aren’t always meant to flow and be “cohesive”. That being said it’s definitely subjective to the listener of they find audibly attractive but Periphery does what they do well. They’re constantly evolving which what gives them their dynamic. Always on the periphery! 🤘🤘🤘🤘

You FINALLY GOT AROUND TO IT! Though I'm disappointed you didn't like it, but eh, that's life. Periphery is a band that takes a little bit of acclimating to before you can really appreciate the full scope of what they do. I wasn't crazy about them the first time I heard their music, but after checking out a few more songs I got hooked, and now they're one of my all time favorite bands. You also have to consider that this particular song is the final track of a 2 album concept arc, and it has a lot of musical and thematic tie-ins to previous songs off both albums. So to really appreciate this song for what it is, you almost have to listen to those 2 albums in their entirety, likely more than once in order to soak in the story. Which, in itself is a really cool, dark journey through the eyes of a man born into a cult of devil worshippers (confirmed by the singer of the band in an interview,) and his inner struggle with what he's been taught versus what he wants, and the consequences of certain decisions he makes. But I'm glad you at least see how much better they are than shitty ass Icarus Lives would suggest. And if you should ever be interested in checking out more of their stuff then some other good songs would be: The Bad Thing Marigold 22 Faces Alpha The Way The News Goes Mile Zero Just to name a few.

Ryan Sadauskis interesting. Marigold, The Way The News Goes and Flatline are all among my favourite tracks of theirs.

I heard a piece of 'Absolomb' performed in a classical guitar medley and instantly had to check out the actual song. I dug Periphery ever since. I'd still say that Absolomb is THE gateway song into their music.

So glad you gave them another chance! A lot of their songs can be drastically different because they are such a diverse group. I think you guys would like Scarlet or maybe even Flatline if you are looking for something more straight forward groove and better transitions. Definitely worth giving them yet another try!
