I know it can't quite compete with how smoothly P5 Strikers runs, (I had more korok forest moments with it than I ever had in BOTW) but I was utterly blown away with how everything introduced through combat and unlockable side quests would all be introduced in service of the story. I'd love for more people to see how incredible the game is, in spite of the niggling frame rate issues that would crop up from time to time.

From many a foreigner's POV, America's love of the flag, and the whole pledge of allegiance thing, is pretty strange, but it's just another cultural unification thing. When you don't spend enough money doing that, you get random independence movements. It's just that since Japan lost WWII, the US techniques wouldn't work so well, and therefore they have to go with "look at how great all our little prefectures and their unique cultures are".

Through purely second hand knowledge: As far as I'm aware local (non-exported) japanese TV has an exhausting level of positivity at all times. Everything is awesome or amazing, every idea is cool or valid. Everything is hosts exclaiming how amazing something is while people do genuinely mundane things. It causes a certain degree of emotional exhaustion, but its accepted practice the same way that putting fine text at the end of ads is accepted in the US. Part of the constant barrage of 'sugoi' (wow/awesome) is brand/image management because in Japan that's how things are presented. Like how in the US putting fine text at the end of a TV ad doesn't feel shady anymore, so much as 'official.' I think that Japanese devs and perhaps Japanese people in general take a certain catharsis by actually doing that 'mundane showing off' stuff properly in video games. It's the best explanation I have for things like monster hunter world's hunger-inducing cooking animations. The subtext screams 'NOW THIS IS SUGOI YOU CHARLATANS' to me. Also any actual Japanese people please correct my theory if I'm off base...

Yeah, think of how many American games will bend over pretty far so that they have a reason to include San Francisco / New York / Las Vegas / D.C. as levels.

Well and it's especially alien to ex-colonial nations especially since we don't really have the same sense of heritage. Like, sure Italy can be proud of it's culture but it seems kind of hypocritical for Americans to be proud of our culture since there isn't really anything original to it; it's just an amalgamation of European cultures, plus it only goes back 300 years so you don't have the same sense of tradition. Same thing with Australia, they were a prison colony, of course they're not especially proud of their heritage. Plus national pride in America has kind of taken a dip in the last 50 years because of a cascade of failures starting with the loss of the Vietnam war. The UK too, although the reasons for that are more complicated and far too numerous to list in a comment section. I actually think, paradoxically, that the rise of reactionary nationalism in these two countries can be directly tied to this loss of national pride; people want to go back to feeling proud of their country and when someone says "follow me and we'll be proud again," that's a compelling offer. Anyway, my point is I think you'd see a lot more "yay America" stuff in games once we get out of this long slump and people actually feel more of a reason to be proud of our country.

It's mainly because each region of Japan has its own traditions and charms. To an outsider it's gonna look like they're showing off Japan, but actually it's showing off specific regions in Japan. The closest comparison to this would be like local cuisines in states all around the US.

Well it also original persona 5 was going about the characters going across the world until the 2011 earthquake, so strikers is kinda making up for that.

What I find most strange is that people find it strange. There's much to see, they make a great effort to preserve and renovate their historical monuments AND it makes people go around and spend money. Because of this kind of thing there's at least one reason to go to pretty much any region in Japan. People get to discover and explore their own country. I wish other places emulated this behavior more.

@@Le_beaubrun it's such a thing that there is even a whole anime/manga of it called food wars that was a hit in Shonen jump till the author had to suddenly end because he literally covered most types of food and cooking methods from Japan and around the world that he eventually ran out of things to challenge the protags that led to last 50 chapters of the manga to not be great.

he likes SOME of them. For example, Bravely Default 2 (even if the game is good) it was not for him. "Too generic" he kinda mentioned in the P5S stream. He likes JRPGs that don't follow the standard. And while BD1 and 2 break the mold too, it seems like a generic "HEroes of light" story. Hell, in BD2 they even call themselves that way.

The man mercilessly tore the Uncharted series apart, only to later admit that he quite liked the games. That's just how he hides his feelings.

The reverse is also true. Fans can have very high standards for anything that comes out with the name of their franchise slapped on it. If the game is decent and has enough fan-service then fans will lap it up. But you can slap as much fan-service as you want on a turd, fans still won't like it.

Kanto is literally based on the creator's nostalgia of Japan before it became fully industrialized, and it came out a few years after Japan's financial bubble popped. Every mainline region since has presented an idealized version of their real life counterpart. Johto has a fanstical version of Kansai, Hoenn and Sinnoh are versions of Kyushu and Hokkaido where the people and the region are in perfect harmony. Unova, Kalos and Alola are all based on parts of the world that are massively popular for Japanese tourism; Alola got the most detail in this regard and really honed in on the aesthetics of a particular era of booming Japanese Tourism in the 90s. Galar is a bit different in that its development wad influenced by someone who is actually from the UK. Still an idealized version of the UK tho, as it lacks the imperialism.

I think it's inconsistent with the villains and main conflict. The first two felt super forced to me, but the mayor lady actually was a believable politician with an actual reason to do what she does. The fact the game breaks the formula right after with 2 snappier and less orthodox dungeons gives it major props in my books. The fourth one in particular was surprisingly... mature? Overall this is far less consistent than P5's writing but it still has some high points that are memorable. Though the highlight of the game is definitely character writing. Moments like Makoto and Akane talking about their parents were surprisingly good. A worthy spin-off indeed

Same persona 5 strikers was amazing. Imo The Other dynasty warrior gameplay wise games were just boring af. Because for me it was just press X or O to play and i wasn't interested in the rest at all

It feels awkward controlling 3 different characters, it feels chaotic imo, and yet it's still just not interesting enough for me to really get into it.

Persona 5 is available on PS3 right? I'm on PC but I emulated it with a PS3 emulator and it runs perfectly. Can't play Royal though, but it's only a matter of time before it gets ported over.

I’d say the arena spin-offs for 4 are the outright best of them. Mostly because they tie 4 back to 3 with the entire party from 3 showing up. If persona 5 gets something like that it might be one of the best but until then I don’t think arena and ultimately have been surpassed

@@CollinandBri the problem with Arena is that they’re fighting games and fighting games kinda suck lol They’re very good fighting games admittedly, but P4AU’s writing may be the worst of the series. Sho is one of the worst characters ever.

​@@sixem6582 The number of bosses in the game that are difficult to inflict Ailments is a really short list. Almost all of them, including the Reaper, can be inflicted with them. Some of the game's most busted builds involve ailment procing and hitting technicals, or using Soul Thief to basically get more SP Back than you use. Ailments are stupidly strong and do indeed make Merciless really easy. Only a few of the game's best Personas don't involve Technicals and ailments in some way. Hell one of the best Yoshitsune builds involves Ailments, that's how busted it is if it's being put on Yoshitsune. ​

@@sixem6582 It's similar to P5 Royal because technicals are busted, and even more so if you have Soul Thief passive as it allows you to restore SP as well.

I'd say he'll probably not like it as much as Persona, it doesn't have the decent plots he expects, like sure the Lore and themes are super fascinating, but the main story itself is generally one of the weaker aspects of the Mainline games since they're well trodden stories, games like Persona and Devil survivor got better there since their focus was on characters and your interactions with them, Hell I'd say Devil Survivor is the best middle ground of Mainline SMT and Persona in term of feel for the story, characters and themes

I would like to see him give 13 sentinels a go which has more in common with p5 in terms of jrpgs.

@@christopherrowley1274 thing about v3 is despite it being its own thing it does rely heavily on the lore of the previous games at certain points of the story. Although to be honest I would love to see him rip into the result of the first trial and result of the last.

Well he reviewed Doki Doki Literature Club and seemed pretty well aware of Hatoful Boyfriend in the last dev diary (not on youtube yet), and in that dev diary described an idea *for* a visual novel / dating sim so he's likely already got a few under his belt.

Have you listened to his audiobooks? They're (mostly) very good, and he often assigns himself a very grumpy main character who does lots of complaining :D

He did mention in a P4G post ZP stream that he does know OF SMT and that Persona started as a spinoff, just hasn't touched or researched it

to be fair, all of the confidants live in tokyo, and you're only in tokyo for the first 10 or so hours of the game. we wouldn't see much of them even if they were in the game

And even if they all live in Tokyo, that doesn't mean some of them couldn't just happen to be on vacation or traveling on business to the big name locations the PTs visit in this game.

Dancing All Night is genuinely a good game. Despite the plot being pretty forgettable you can tell there was effort put into that game and as result it's a ton of fun. Yahtzee was talking out his ass in that part.

@@shipu302 Even if the way the story was done visual novel style, it was still pretty funny and goofy seeing the p4 cast dancing and then have their petsona do a sick guitar etc solo. if only they would actually have a story in the other danicng games because the 3d character models are leagues then the character cardboard cutouts in p4. Hopefully Yatz will give it a go in the future.

Honestly, I'm kind of sad he didn't review the Remastered version of XC1. There's something in the plot of that game that screams at me "SNES JRPG" but I can't figure it out what. Definitely one of my favourite JRPGs ever. XC2 is... a mixed bag. There are some plot points I like, but they show up at the end and the game system is enjoyable. I will say that the blatant fanservice has left me immunized against fanservice in general. From a "I'm surprised they can get away with this!" to "huge tits? (yawn)"
