Ditto. With peanut butter toast. And also the reason I thought peter pan was a middle aged woman n tiger lilly was a blond hair blue eyed native American
For the record, I'm full-blooded Native American and not offended by this in the slightest. This is entertainment, nothing more or less. There's quite a bit of ignorance in this (deliberately so, these are supposed to be English kids playing make-believe), but I don't see any hatred. Sondra Lee is really good in this. Of course, I'm only speaking for myself and don't represent all indigenous Americans. If this vid makes you uncomfortable, no problem: but you clicked it...
It's true. These aren't aren't supposed to be American natives ... they're just tribes of people in a made up land. Anyone who gets offended is just looking for reasons to be offended.
You give a very good perspective to it. I do agree this was not done out of hatred and isn't meant to be mean to Indigenous tribes. Especially since, you're right the concept was a child's imagination, not meant to be represented accurately. I can see how it offends people though given both during this time and now; there was and is ignorance as to what real Indigenous tribes are like and what their languages/dances mean. I see how this dance did not help with getting rid of the ignorant stereotypes that people believe to be real and poke fun at. Especially during a time when they did not give much credit to Indigenous actors and would not let them truly represent themselves.
I know this would never fly today due to the stereotypes depicted, but when you focus on the composition- it’s a really great musical number. It has a beginning, middle, and end. There’s a quiet beginning that gradually builds to a fantastic climax, and the number ends full circle to how we started.
And the choreography and the enthusiasm behind the dancers is way beyond high quality. Wish I saw this level of unadulterated glee in more dance numbers.
I don’t take moral cues from a bunch of virtue signaling, token posturing, “professionally offended” on behalf of others performative narcissists. I’ll watch and enjoy 1955-1960s Peter Pan any time I like
I always loved the choreography in this scene and I'm always sad that it gets omitted. They can totally redo it without the stereotypes and still showcase Native Americans with their dance moves!
Even as a little white kid, I wondered why she had blond hair and it bugged me. But, I watched this till the VHS tape broke. Who else remember's that it was sponsored by Rasinets?
I always wondered why she had blonde hair too and I would always point out how one of the other girls looked more like tiger Lily to my parents, but she was great in this
Her being blonde didn’t bother me, Peter being a woman did tho. As great as this movie is, l never understood that; why the play was written that way. I myself have been in the play and l asked the director (who played Hook) if was going to cast a guy or girl and he went, “Whoever is best?” He picked my friend, Christine
@@kimberleeroberts9873these are called trousers parts, that is male roles that are best played by women. Carabino in the marriage of Figero is another Beaumache the original author wrote that carabino must be played by a young woman because only a young woman would understand him. Peter Pan is another such part.
In some versions of Peter Pan the “Indians” are depicted as an eclectic group of children the same as the Lost Boys. They’re not literally Native American tribespeople. It’s more like kids playing cops and robbers on a fantasy island where they never grow up. Peter Pan is written by a British person who was using adventure tropes to be whimsical. For example, real historical pirates are violent criminals, yet in Neverland the rules of reality don’t really apply. It’s silly and carefree fiction. These “Indians” are meant to seem like a group of “lost children” who live in Neverland and play in the woods. It’s not so much meant to be an actual depiction of Indigenous Native Americans the same way the pirates aren’t supposed to be like real historical pirates. Again, it’s just adventure tropes that all come together for a bedtime story. It’s the cartoon Disney version that did a full on racial caricature of native ethnicities.
You know what, I’m Cree (native), and I grew up watching this on vhs. I’m not even offended by this number, the choreography is amazing; it was a product different time, can’t expect much different
This is a very charming scene. Not sure if its because of Sondra Lee or the choreography between her and her fellow indian friends. You can tell they're having a blast but still professional for the time. Again, very charming scene. I literally haven't laid eyes on this in 25 maybe 30 years lol
Let’s be honest, this was the best movie ever if you were born in the 80s. I never realized just how old the movie was already when I watched it as a child, and it is still fantastic to this day in my eyes. If you find it offensive you need help, this was one of my favorite parts of the movie along with when they build Wendy a house
I’m Native American. Born 84. When I was a kid I was very bothered by the fact that Tiger Lily was very blond. At age six I didn’t understand that these were supposed to be children playing at being Indian. I get that now and am no longer bothered, but I don’t think my six year old self “needed help” in the sense that you mean. An explanation maybe. But not pro help. Thanks anyways.
This was in 1960. The video or film is quite good for something that was recorded so long ago. This was before The Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan and before the televised moon landing and before the JFK assassination and before the death of Marilyn Monroe. The dancers and in this performance must be dead or in an old folk's home by now .
Wow I think your really looking too deep into a children's book lighten up. I mean if u wanna play devils advocate what about how they portray the pirates im sure people that are in the ships and boats don't get all pissy. How about a dog that plays nanny there r nannies out there are they r stupid and dumb as a dog. Not all alligators attack humans r they in the wrong 2...u could do this w anything that's entertainment relax a little bit. I dont even think they've played this since my grandma tapped it 4me in 1988 when I was 3
@@Ada-ik1ow Racist? This is a made up tribe of people from a made up land. If you're equating or relating this to American Indians then maybe YOU'RE the racist one.
She looks like Gwen Stefani. Or, a Lucille Ball-esque Native American princess. Pretty darn weird and offensive, yes, but that's probably what had me finding Tiger Lily so spunky and cool as a kid.
Definitely before their time. Choreography hit different now. I may have watched this everyday a certain time in my childhood. Can we just appreciate the choreography. Michael Jackson had to steal these moves 😂 Go awf TL! We have to stop being so damn sensitive. That was then, here is now.

If you think of it as 1800s English kids pretending to be the "injuns" they've only ever read about them in dime store novels, it's not so bad. I'm actually pretty impressed by the performers and their playfulness. If your brain relates it to actual Native Americans (and mine did), it's insulting as all hell.
When this was made, it was probably difficult to find and cast real Native Americans to represent themselves or consult with since it was still a great time of oppression for these real human beings. In the 1960's there were still Native children who were beaten for speaking their language and practicing their culture. Tiger Lily was white-washed and made to speak broken English and sound primitive as if Native people were long gone. Now I can see how this could damage a Native child's self-esteem and give bullies an easy target. I enjoyed watching this as a kid, but I hope this musical is modified for future generations. If it is ever made into film again, I hope an actual Native American can play Tiger Lily and make her at least sound like an intelligent child.
ALL children are intelligent. I'm not sure if your aware how ableist you sound, but what you said is offensive to people with mental disabilities I'm not sure why the language used to describe the portrayal of the Native Americans in this version is almost always ableist. Seriously, what's wrong with just saying "That's not how Native Americans talk!"?
@@POTOKnowItAll666IHC Are you serious? Kyootzee is right- they're saying that this is making fun of Indigenous people and acting as if they (as a society and people) were less intelligent then white ppl when native people bathed regularly (white ppl didnt), knew more about science and technology (although not war technology)- Its not ableist to point out racism and how harmful this movie and musical was to so many people (either by wrongfully teaching them that it is ok to make fun of native people and by diminishing Native people because its racist). Just saying "That's not how Native Americans talk!" diminishes their culture and language.
I like the dance moves, the leapfrog and the part when one of the Indians lift Tiger Lily off the ground, but I don't get it. Why are the Indians are going "Shh"?
"Kody Maxwell" "Indians" or "Native Americans" or whatever name of definition is fitting ( I have heard some people say that even "Native American" is wrong and offensive) are people who have traditionally lived in the wilds and have to be careful of attracting the attention of bears or any animal that would attack them and also they have to be quiet as possible when they are hunting some animal or are on the warpath.
The difference between the Disney Peter Pan movie and the Mary Martin version. Is that Native Americans sing what makes the Red man and those actors in the play and television are white actors. Also this version of Peter Pan that Mary Martin starred in is mostly closely related to the books then the Disney movie of Peter Pan 1953.
This choreography is great, and the music is catchy. But yeah, this would be really offensive these days. It could still work if they tweaked a few things. Like casting natives. It’s supposed to be silly, like a child interpretation of what “indians” are like.
Kate McGee yeah, you’re right, I’ve changed my opinion on this. I think the choreography is still cool to look at and is impressive but separated from the racist representation of Natives of course.
also casting Native americans in these roles won't fix it unless all they do is go onstage to debunk the racist propaganda and explain the "One Tribe" native culture soup ideas that the dance perpetuates
Wasn't this ground breaking? Having a woman star in a live TV play as Peter pan? So they r down for that but r intentionally making fun of native Americans in a children's book from 1800s. I am not native American but this was like 60yrs ago and its not like they confirmed that this was an intentional knock on native Americans u think they r gonna get that deep into slamming the natives for a peter pan play? If u feel this way u should worry about bigger topics concerning native American harassment or hate crimes....I mean it's not like they even show this anymore or advertise it
Peter Pan is always played by a woman. It was originally presented this way in the first production in Edwardian England in the British pantomime tradition. Cathy Rigby the gymnast has played Peter almost nonstop in various productions . Alison Williams on NBC. IMy daughter danced to this perfectly at age five in front of the TV as it played and I have it on tape. So it’s a wonderful memory and wish it wouldn’t vanish completely from productions. I wish it could be maybe be cleaned up possibly but it was English children imagining Native Americans from Penny Dreadlock books. Did people get upset when Johnny Depp in Finding Neverland asks about savages as he and the children played cowboys and Indians? Again, all from an ignorant perspective of the time.
Alanna Saunders was Cherokee, but we elected Trump, the most racist man in America, President two years later. I DON'T see the Political change, that casting a real Native in #PeterPanLive should have brought. DOES IT EVEN MATTER?
Your right Donald is the most racist and evil person, if only these right wingers would go learn something , Donald even said he supports Putin, he’s gonna start a war if he’s ever elected again
Being “professionally offended” by this doesn’t make you edgy, clever, enlightened, or virtuous. It just makes you another “current thing” performative narcissist, as insipid as it gets.
I'm not a politically correct person, but this is almost physically painful to watch. I had a crush on Sondra Lee back in the day, but good god... This is actually offensive, and the fact that Tiger Lily is platinum blonde and looks downright Nordic is the least of its problems.
