Smolik was so ahead of his time. Flip in flip out, all kinds of 270s shoves and bigspins into and out of stuff, and back in 98. Part still holds up now.
And even a lot of skaters that did part take in the wholw baggy scene admit that it was a really bad trend. In fact, I don't think I have seen an interview from any of those guys that say "you know what? Wearing pants five sizes bigger, and wheels size 30 was a great idea and fashion trend". If anything it just has nostalgia, and that's why it seems better. Plus, today's skaters don't wear extremely skinny jeans. You know who did? Corey Duffel and he fucking rips....
I remember watching this part years later after I watched it initially (when it came out) thinking, "Man this guy was really, REALLY good." Now in 2021 I just shake my head. There's no other skater I can think of growing up that was as underappreciated and underrated as Peter Smolik. The tricks he does in this part are just mind-blowing when you consider it was 1998. I think the "ahead of their time" thing is kind of overused but in Smolik's case, it is absolutely warranted.
He was really popular in 98-2000- at least among teenage skaters in my neck of the woods (bay area). And his Osiris ods were really popular(had a pair myself- loved skating those shoes). He didn't have Muska levels of appreciation but that was true of pretty much everyone else in that period. I had the fulfill the dream vhs at the time and my personal favorite was Steve Olson because i thought his style was the most interesting. His skating had this really cool, almost lazy sort of just-don't-give-a-phuk type of style to it
@@gregorsamsa1364 Yeah dude Olson was awesome too. A kid I used to know was obsessed with Shorty's around that time. Another friend of mine used to joke and call Smolik "Peter Small-dick" which still cracks me up to this day. All in fun. We all loved Fulfill the dream.
I was 13 when this came out, and me and my buddies used to skate around 35 hours a week! We were obsessed! This whole baggy look was just normal at the time. I mean, Peter Smolik pushed it a bit further, but all the skater dudes I went to high school with had bigger pants. Fashions come and go. I do miss those days.
Met him at a party in PB a little after this came out, we were both kind of drunk, he was super cool when I asked him about it. Such a talented and under rated legend. Used to also see Olson around town doing weird Olson stuff like yoga on the sidewalk or super boned out switch shifty ollies on flat. PB was the SPOT in 98, and pro sightings were always fun. Stoked to watch this 20+ years later, and his part is still amazing
man when i was a teen in the 90s peter smolik was my heroes man he was the stylish dude ever and when i skated i strived to have the style like him i used to watch fulfill the dream all the time just his part its weird seeing him not when im 30yr old this year hes got long hair but still skating like i remember hes great i wish nothing but the best for him
Remember 98' like it was yesterday. Back when skating was about having a fun. Lots of seriousness came into the sport since then. Fulfill the Dream is still fucking fun to watch. That VHS tape got raped. Too many replays
***** I had a copy made, but it ended up at a friends house. Luckily that friend ended up converting it (much later) to digital format so I could watch it on my computer. I would guess I've watched it over a hundred times, if not more. From start to finish.
Skateboarding in itself is the most creative world you can be a part of, its amazing how much effort and work is involved with every second of footage being edited. 0:36 MAN ON THE ROOF!
i still remember going to the park one day (in flagstaff arizona) and seeing Smolik leaving and i shouted to him "hey I got your shoes!" as we passed each other. this video part was insane at the time
I was growing up watching this Peter damn great smolik skating and fluently street style and listen to hip hop music till now still feel the aura 96-2018 damn thank you skateboarding feel blessed growing up as a late 70’s kids everything changes now but not me(proud to be 38yr old man and still burning the street like I don’t give a damn cuz skateboarding is not a crime but it’s a lifestyle and passion that no one can take away from you 🔥❤️💯☝🏽🤙🏼
Always been one of my favorite video and this part was the bomb (loved Aaron snyder too)! Got me hype to skate each time, what a legend! Steez for days!
i wish skating was still like this. now it's like if your trick isn't 100% clean, it doesn't make the video and the skater has to go redo it. this is dope, you can tell once he lands the trick, it's considered a done deal. and there not worried about people being in the background of the clip, or people yelling/cheering. that's what it should still be like.
Take notes new skaters. This guy was doing these tricks way before they were standard. Imagine the shock we felt when we saw this part. Wish the new breed would know what that was like.
He always did a bit of a dopedance, but he definately one of the best and most technical videoparts of the late 90's. This, Osiris The Storm and Guilty =D
It's hard to believe he was just 21 or so when he filmed this. I was only like 16 when I saw this, but now I'm 26. It's weird to think that he was younger than me at this point, and still so goddamn rad of a skater...
I never understood how Muska was a bigger name than Peter. I think it was just Muska's dedication to Shortys that did it, while Peter was a far better skater in every regard.
Muska was Gnarlier, more rails and balls out insane hammers and was the freshest yet to do it, that's why. And he was massive, he helped sell THPS by being in it, not the other way around.
Style of the fuckin year indeed!! This fool never flaps his wings. This shit was revolutionary. Sucks everyone on this team just kinda faded away for one reason or another..
