I dont know if you know by now. But, try to bend the cleaner to the shape of the stem before inserting it. That is something everyone should do always with bent stems. Because otherwise it can scrape a hole into the stem over time.
Every time I am tempted by a Peterson, I do a little research on "Peterson problems" and end up with another Ropp, Chacom, Nording, or Savinelli...I always smoke a bent pipe, and have never once had a problem with any of the aforementioned brands passing a pipe cleaner or having issues with too tight stems (or wobbles), even with the genuine natural horn stems on a Ropp...to each their own, but thanks for this video! Probably saved me from an expensive disappointment...the carnauba wax tip someone posted here in the comments is a good one for any brand of pipe as well...although, unless its a spigot, NEVER take a hot or warm pipe apart to clean!
A tiny touch of carnauba wax (carnauba is a high temp natural food grade wax) on the stem joint solves the stiff joint problem and will still ensure a good seal. When the pipe is hot the wax is most active, so it can be disassembled and cleaned after smoking.
the main reason is as you draw the smoke it doesn't just go straight to your mouth does the turns and doing so will cool the smoke down for a better smoke
+Alessandro Volta Corncobs and basket pipes are for beginners. These aren't the most expensive pipes Peterson make but are decent quality. Once you know how to get around the problem they are perfectly good pipes.
Bought 2 Petersons . System standard B42 did not have reservoir hole drilled and the 302 system standard had the draft hole drilled 3/8" above bottom of the bowl. Unfortunately I can't share your praise of their pipes. Furthermore I wrote them and no response. Questionable operation.
I have a Peterson's Sherlock Professor, the quality of the drilling is not as good as you would like. Also had small filings.That is why people prefer a Dunhill. Always wanted a Dracula, makes you think when they come like that from the box. Albeit I have several older Peterson's (all with a metal band) and they are ok. I would use a but of sand paper on the tenon. Cheers. Peter
Large collection of Draculas there ;) with some bent pipes i just bent a bit the tip of the pipe cleaner and insert it on the stem .. Just before reaching the bottom of the shank ..move back and foward a little to find the hole... Most of the time works, but not always... Depending on the curve of the pipe/stem..
Hi, I hope you dont mind my comment,I dont mean any harm, The reason why the stems are air tight, if any air got through it would make you cough,And if it was loose it may come apart in your hand whilst drawing on it . Its very precision work to make a joint like that.After time they will become easier to loosen .But a french chalk,like (example baby powder)but use something organic that doesn't change with temperature ,and does not do any harm to you etc,when cleaning always take it apart,As you need your eyes to make sure its clean,Im sorry i dont know anything about the new filter system(old school) A tip if you smoke a lot ,use different pipes ,otherwise you will stand a chance of burning through the lining..And always run your new pipe in slowely with the tobacco evenly spread in the pipe bowl. Anyway Sherlock Holmes never had any problems with his Petersons Calabash pipes, has any one out there got a Petersons Albino pipe,very rare white briar,
I have had peterson pipes since that are not so bad as these were. They are air tight and don't fall apart, but not ridiculously tight. My reason for making the video was the lack of any advice available to help people with this problem. Hopefully the film might have stopped some people breaking a pipe or two.
I was lucky to work at Kapp n Peter sons, I done my apprenticeship there in engineering, a tip one of the finest pipes ever made was the Centenary 100 years KnP ,or ones made from the very very rare Albino briar,, Stand apart white wood.
I have a selection of bent pipes including two Petersons and have never had a problem removing the stem especially the petersons as they are the easiest stems to remove
Good old Peterson system pipe. I use an ear bud - good tip about the freezer. I thought you only turned the stem clockwise as that is the way the drill turned when the hole made.
Evening have you ever had a problem with the silver band coming loose? I dropped my new Sherlock Holmes in the river fortunately it floats, this happened couple of weeks ago I e just noticed the band had moved I have pushed it back into place, any advice would be gratefully received
Wow! that is terrible. A new pipe stem should fit a little bit loose then when it is in use it should tighten up just the right amount. Shame! shame on peterson.
I guess it would be difficult to check all the pipes and maybe they think the stems will get lose with time. What got me was how difficult it was to find some advice on how to split them safely. I think this kind of info on maintenance and care should be on a card in the box.
+redelrik don,t take the pipe apart until it cools down,it expands from the heat and also if it is really stuck if you put the pipe in a plastic bag and put in the refrigerator the wood will contract, for twenty minutes you should have no problem pulling it apart. i know you should not have to go through that with a new pipe but until its broke end ,you might give it a try.
I never had problem taking my Peterson's pipes apart and they to let you know if the pipe has a filter in fact they have filtered and standard in some of their pipes. naby this has changed science 2014 but I have no problems with them
