Funny you mention the "pinecone" reference. One of my customers who loves big pipes had me send him photos of several pipe options and one was a pub rustic. He phoned me and said, " I like that one that looks like a pinecone. The metal piece in the bit is called a "chimney" believe it or not and Peterson claims its main function is to further extend the length the smoke travels by directing the smoke from the bowl down toward the well and then back up to the mouth, producing a cooler smoke. Maybe? I don't know. Also the reason the pipe you bought in Dublin does not say "made in Ireland" is because for several years they did not stamp that on the shank. About two years ago after Laudisi bought Peterson they started stamping "made in Ireland" again like in the old days. Laudisi has brought back a lot of the old traditional Peterson production processes. For example they now again sandblast and rusticate all of the pipes in the Peterson factory whereas they used to have those chores done in Italy, Twain was a big Peterson advocate although he also smoked many cigars. I think Holbrook found the cigar to be a better prop on stage as he used it to accentuate points as he was telling his great stories. Risa and I saw him twice on stage in Portland, ten years passed between the two performances we saw. By the second time around he did not need much makeup to pull off the resemblance. Final thought, let's all take a moment today to remember Queen Elizabeth 2d's passing. Ruled with grace over 70 years of world turmoil. Keep puffin.
That's what I consider a classic pipe to look like. Those are the types of pipes that were smoked around my granddad's country stores potbelly stove when I was little. 😊 Great memories! Maybe I'll get one one day.
This is why your channel is one of my favorite channels to watch. It has that small town feel and I feel like I am having a smoke with a buddy. I love my little small town that I live in in North Carolina. The customer service is top notch and everybody knows everybody. Just like your channel Tom. It has that small town feel and it gets seven out of five stars from me!
Thanks for showing the Pub pipe, it’s in my shopping cart, was thinking about pulling the trigger and your video popped up. It really helped me make my decision. Keep your videos coming I really enjoy them. By the way I can’t wait to get the pipe! Thank you Tom!
I have the same saw. My local repair shop is a gem too! A new chain hardware store is opening nearby and word is they’re trying to buy them so everyone is upset they might be going away. Glad you got a buddy to hangout with and enjoy the hobby together. Have a great one Tom!
Tom, I have watched and enjoyed your videos for years now, you have gotten me through some tough times, I am coming to Corvallis Oregon in 2 weeks to visit a friend, first time seeing the Pacific coast, so excited
Thanks for the recommend ... have 2 House Pete's... one reg sandblast the other a PSB...but no Pub. About that "new" rustication...I guess pine cone hits the bulls eye spot on. Never could get used to the feel..almost like coral. So I'm sticking with either old pete estates or new sandblast. Either way time for a Pub! 😝
Great vid! Love my pub pipe. The past year I’ve gotten big into Petersons. I just love how classic they look and feel and the system pipes smoke great for me! Happy smokes!
Pipesmoking, as a completely optional activity for most of us, means you can indulge your pleasure in selecting pipes and tobaccos - and many other aspects, also. That means including some Classic Peterson shapes in your herd. Happy smokes to you, too! -Tom
I have 2 of the three volumes of Mark Twains autobiography. He smoked cigars and pipes, from the time he woke until he went to bed. He carried his pipe tobacco in a flour or other cloth sack, he would remove the stem from his pipe and put it in the sack. Whenever he wanted to smoke it he would just pull it out with however much was in the pipe reattach the stem and smoke it.
Awesome pipe. I was thinking of looking for a bigger Peterson with a big bowl. I bought my first Dunhill estate pipe recently. It's a super smoker with an effortless draw but it is a bit small (oval).
One of my favorite pipes and of all the Petes I have is my bent Mark Twain and I was happy to find out about these so one is in the mail now. Always hard to say why one pipe stands out, but I'd have had a rack of the Twains if they were readily available.
Tom there definitely is some funny stuff going on with Google/RU-vid. I've been subscribed to your channel for at least 10+ years & I just noticed that I wasn't setup for the notification bell. I searched you out because I haven't heard from you for quite a while. Just would like to make you aware Christopher
I smoked London Dock back in college in the 60's. Back then made by I think RJ Reynolds . They had Kentucky Club regular and aromatic and a few others.
concerning Twain's smoking preference i get the impression from reading alot if not most of his writing that he was a prolific and inveterate smoker of cigars. the lower estimates suggest 22 a day. often going to sleep with one in his mouth. i dont know how the man could find the time for a pipe with that schedule. ive seen pictures of him holding or smoking what ls apparently at least 3 Petersons. he did a bit of advertising for them. i remember him describing smoking many cobs while writing early on in his career. buying them by the dozen. perhaps he occasionally used a pipe as a pallet cleanser between cigars? perhaps he went back and forth between the two like i do. preferring one to the other at times. that kind of behavior or the frequency of it certainty wouldn't fly in our time and he got a good deal of criticism for it in his. nice looking pipes. take care
@@NWPipeSmoker funny you mentioned that. i took off most of last week to cut dead standing wood in the national forest for firewood. mostly ironwood, sugar maple and ash. so im heading into winter with more wood than i normally have. nice to run into you online in the same timeframe. best wishes for the autumn. hope those alders at big mountain are doing well. that rosd at big mountain probably needs mowing again 😁.
Just had my first bowl in the new pub pipe (Haunted Bookshop). Very nice pipe and the size suits me better than the house pipe. Nice big briar but not goliath. Take it easy Tom!
I know precisely what you mean with clenching a Peterson, especially a P lip of that shape. Just hangs a certain way that feels like it belongs there. Won't order anymore Peterson pipes online anymore. Had issues with 2 of them. Happy piping brother
One more shot at aromatics, my god, from the label description and the dizzying array of ingredients you would think firing that stuff up would give you a euphoric feeling par excellence, unfortunately Tom, as you and I know, oftentimes the description on the tin is often in inverse proportion to the amount of flavor one derives from the product. This one sounds like a terrible waste of good blending tobaccos lost in a sea of "glop". LOL.
Thank you for the comparison. I know this is an uncommon question but how long does a bowl last you with this pipe roughly? I like a longer smoke but from what I have heard, the three hours with a house pipe would last me the whole evening.
Smoke nothing but Peterson and you tried that Cherokee somebody sent you. Well I had to try it and because of you it's all I smoke! You bet I blame you!
Have you got any advice for a newb pipe smoker like myself to help with saliva build up in my mouth while smoking? I keep the pipe clenched in my mouth similar to the way you do while I'm working on something, but after a very short amount of time, I almost collect a mouthful of saliva while doing so! I know that is not the most pleasant thing to think about, but just wondering if there's something I'm doing wrong to cause this to happen? Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have! :)
If your at home spit it out. If your in public, take a breather and swallow a bit. I imagine you'll get use to it and salivate less. Your mouth must love the flavors. Good luck!
It's a Jet-Line Pipe Pro. I got mine from Doug at the CargoHold in Poulsbo, WA but I'm sure you can find them at most pipe shops. Refillable, reliable ... I like it. It's displaced the BIC, though matches are still good when you're in the mood. -Tom
Before I got the O29 I went through five $40 electric chainsaws, and got a lot of wood cut with them. Also a major hassle to wrangle a cord through the woods. The new battery-powered saws look good, but since the 029 got fixed for a hundred bucks and didn't need to be replaced, that decision has been put off for another few years. -Tom
Food grade vinyl tubing from the hardware store, cut to size then heated and softened in a cup of hot water, and slipped on. Long lasting, good bite, inconspicuous ... it's my solution. There are some vids from way back that show my process for installing them. -Tom
