Indicators Not Working Turning Right / Left, How To Remove & Repair Stalk.
This is a common fault on the City Bugs, Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107, Citroen C1,
This Peugeot 107 Has only done 33000 miles and the indicators have been gradually getting worse, until they completely stopped working on right turns.
I was able to remove the stalk and successfully repair it, with no issues.
The stalks from the main dealer very expensive, around £130.

I have has a few comments about the main beam being stuck on after rebuild, thanks to Stuart brown for this great information:-
Thanks for this excellent video, I wouldn't have attempted this without these detailed instructions showing every step - the indicators on my daughter's 56 plate 107 now working again! Also had the problem with main beam stuck on first time - found there is a piece a plastic (visible above your thumb and forefinger holding the cotton bud at 20:15) which isn't fixed and can jump off the little knob below it, and end up sitting in front of it instead of on top of it. This stops the stalk moving between the dip and main beam positions, and seems to force main beam on. Worked fine once taken apart (again!) and returned to the right position.
Hope this helps someone else.

What a life saver! I would not have attempted this repair without your very helpful video - it gave me the confidence I needed to tackle the job. Just one point though, a few others have already remarked on this (see Gerard Newman's comment for the detail). The two white plastic sliders have a tendency to get misaligned as you dismantle and reassemble the switch. Like others I didn't notice and had to go through the whole exercise again!! (Getting really expert now!) You don't mention this at all so please update your video to include this very important point.

Thank for an excellent video - very clear and informative. Just one addition - I notice there have been a couple of comments in the replies about the headlights being on when the unit is reassembled onto the car. There are two white plastic sliders on the white plastic housing (approx 20:18) in the video. The left hand side one as you look at the picture is the slider which has three positions - off, side lights and headlights - make sure the stalk is set to “off” and the slider is in the corresponding “down” position. The right hand side slider is the headlight dipped /main beam (when the stalk is pushed forward or back) - make sure the spigot is engaged with the slider (in dipped beam position), before reassembly. As is obvious, I found this out by not checking and had to dissemble it all again ! There are three types of men in the world: 1. Those that learn by reading 2. Those that learn by observation 3. Those that p**s on the electric fence and find out from experience !

This is the best video of its type I've seen on You Tube. I've a couple of points though. Can't you remove the steering wheel then the cowling round the speedo and refit before putting the wheel back? To check the fault's been rectified, why not plug the airbag back in momentarily to do a test before putting the wheel, and cowlings back on?.

Excellent walkthrough of this repair, very clear and easy to follow. Both my left and right flashers are acting up so I'm going to attempt this rather than replacing the entire stalk. It's probably the better option as using a good quality grease will likely prevent it happening again, a replacement will probably get the same problem again at a later time.

@@aaanton11 I found that you don't need to take the cowling off and move the instrument panel out of the way at all, using angled long nosed pliers to get the clamp-clip off and back on.

Hi Anton, I have the same indicator problem, left doesn't work. It's intermittent, hazards work. Changed the stalk for a new one, and everything was good for a whole day. Now I have exactly the same problem again. Stumped , any ideas ?

Really excellent video, saves me a packet. watched it many times to pick up exact location of lugs etc, shown exactly the location , not glossed over quickly. without it I'd have been stuffed and well out of pocket. Great sense of achievement when you fix something important at zero cost. Even copied the slice off the dish scrubber ..all worked a treat, and tips like not putting ignition on with airbag disconnected to avoid fault light were brill. Many thanks indeed, one of the best ive watched.

Thanks for this great video, which gave me, and my limited mechanical skills, the confidence to disassemble the steering wheel mechanism and successfully fix my indicator problem on my aygo. I had one big challenge. I struggled to get the steering wheel off its mount. It eventually came off, but the big plastic ring, containing the airbag wires, flew off too, as the steering wheel gave way. The ring split in two halfs, one dangling in 10 cm of thin flat belt wire. This ring had a very neat rollup mechanism, to have the flat wire follow the steering wheels motion. Took me quite a bit of time to figure out how to put this ring mechanism back together, without breaking the belt wire and align the wire correctly to the current position of the wheels.

Just finished repairing my stalk thanks to this excellent video. Very clear guidance and explanation. Just one thing be careful with dip/flash assembly mine fell apart and I needed to check video to put back in correctly. Also I used small mole grips to clamp spring clip that retains stalk.

Hi mate! Followed your instructions precisely and fixed the dodgy indicator. However when I turn the ignition on the main beams come on automatically even though it is off on the stalk. Any ideas why this has happened and what I can do to fix it? Cheers

Its down to the stalk, you will need to pull it apart again, paying attention to the small plug on the back of the stalk, read back through the comments some one else had the same issue and fixed it, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Great vid. 3 things… 1) the fix is temporary. Mine lasted 4 months. Got me though an MOT though 👌 2) there are loads of pattern parts. £15-20. If you’re going through the effort to remove all the parts, it’s maybe a better route to replace rather than repair. 3) done this a bunch of times, never managed to remove the speedo cowl first. Much easier to remove the steering wheel THEN remove the cowl. Hope this tweaks are useful to someone. Thanks for the video. Really helped. 👍

Love the way you home in on the exact fixing points and lugs. I know this is a £300 garage job, as they just replace the part in order to "guarantee the work". Took me just over 2 hrs. Highly recommended and well worth getting the tools to do the job if you have the same issue.

About to have a crack at this today. I'll report back with how it went. Edit: So I had a bit of a wiggle about with it before I attempted the clean and the bloody thing is working fine now. I think the issue was my car was very damp inside from a leaky door. I had a 2 inch puddle in the rear footwell after recent bad weather. I changed the door seals (helped by another of your videos!) and left a few dehumidifier bags in there for a few days and that seems to have sorted it, fingers crossed. If the problem comes back I'll have a proper bash.

Hiya, Just done the exact same repair to my '58 plate 107 with 76k on the clock. Used your video as a guide but with a couple of changes which made no difference to the outcome. I removed the airbag and steering wheel first then the cowling etc. seemed easier to get at and then instead of a scouring pad I used a cotton bud dipped in Brasso as it was less aggressive on the contacts. Then a good spray of switch cleaner then some Lubriplate and voila the job's a good 'Un. Great video as usual by the way. Just saved me £80/90. Take care of yourself. 🖒🖒

Superb video, sorted my daughters car out following this method. I would also add that 17:29 it reveals a white plastic cover that houses the control for the high beam. This fell out when i was taking it apart and you MUST put it back correctly. I think there is a raised plastic tag that sits between the two plastic rails....make sure it goes back the same way otherwise the full beam stays on!. Also, at 20:20 the three contact points he cleans might need lifting upwards a tiny bit to ensure contact with the area cleaned up. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the great video. Managed to repair the indicator switch without any issues due to the concise video. The video is very complete, it shows all the required steps unlike all other video's I have seen on this issue. I did not manage to get the steering wheel of the shaft by hitting it with a hammer. But instead just banging the steering wheel itself all around about 10 times with my hands made it come loose. Thanks again.

Brilliantly filmed and explained method for what is, frankly, an easy repair........non-working indicators were going to be the only thing preventing our 2011 155k mile, otherwise immaculate Aygo passing its MOT. Sorry Tony I have to disagree, disconnecting the battery can cause more problems than what you started with the chances of an airbag deploying due to disconnecting the plug is almost impossible, but if you wish to disconnect yours I can understand why you have. Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

I'm watching this video AFTER I did this exact same repair. Good video, but I want to add 1 thing: Please disconnected your battery before doing anything to the airbag. BTW: I did make contact without the airbag to test my indicator. And off course I got an error message, but when I connected everything this error was gone, no need to plug in any OBD.

Hey Anton,sorted my indicators out, your video was useful but things are different on the early C1s, top cowling was impossible to get off while steering wheel on if you have tachometer, and there are no plastic covers over the air-bag bolts just a hole, my MO was : Undo the air-bag bolts, remove the air-bag, remove steering wheel. Everything else is the same. NOTE: the 3 pronged contact plate at 20:15 is not fixed in, it can drop off so be careful, lose it and youre FUBAR'd !

My 107 2006 power outlet where traditionally a cigarette lighter would be is not working properly. When I am using it as a charger the light comes off and sometimes is on if I move it in the right position. Please help me remedy the problem.

Hello, thank you for your nice video. I have a 2007 C1, the low beam of my headlight is not working, I checked the handle, it is good, I changed the bulb, it didn't work, the fuses are good, my low beam light is not burning on the indicator, the fuses are good, there is 12V on all three legs of the socket going into the bulb, shouldn't 1 leg be ground, I couldn't find the fault, I started to suspect the ECU, what could have happened. This error occurred, my high beam is on, can you help me, thank you

I fixed my car with the help of this guide. Thank you very much! I don't think I would have been able to figure out this is fixable and how to take out the small white connector inside the stalk by myself. It was still hard, but knowing it has a tab on the inside was very helpful.

@aaanton11 brilliant video. I had the same problem with a 107 albeit with 89000 on clock. Followed your instructions and my copper terminals were in just the same state. Cleaned up as you did and now it is working perfectly! Saved me a few quid there thankyou 👍🏻

Great video. Fixed my stalk no problem. I did try it without the airbag on, but once the airbag is re connected, the fault light goes off. Also may I suggest putting the steering wheel back on after the cowlings, this made the job a lot easier

Apologies for kick starting a 2 year old video but my wife’s car has just started this problem, can I ask did the indicator still flash out side the car even though it didn’t flash inside? On my wife’s car all the indicators work externally but inside on the right hand arrow flashes. Want to fix it asap and this video is really helpful but just checking it’s the same fault

Hello Friend. Before you disconnect the Airbag you disconnect the Negativ from the Batterie 15-30 Minutes before. And don't put down the Airbag with the Airbagside. If there is a malfunction, the part flies across the car. ALWAYS place the airbag with the contact side downwards! Otherwise a very good Video ;)

I follow these videos to find out where the clips are, as not to break anything, this was useful and the point was that the wrong grease was used at the factory, which I can confirm, the grease is to lubricate the mechanism, not the sliding contacts, which would be an electrical switch grease. So every switch will fail as it gets gummed up. But is an easy fix and did the same job on my Mondeo.

Great video, I replaced my stalk a couple of weeks ago all working fine except the rear fog light on my aygo isn't working and light doesn't show up on the dashboard. I wonder is this related to the stalk or a separate connector issue for the fog light.

Thanks for the tips on where the cover lugs are, a good clean up of the contacts has the indicators working again. I put it down to condensation in the car as the C1's & 107 are a bugger at leaking in water at the rear light, but I have had both door membranes go as well - tks for the vid, very helpful 👍🏻

Thank you for posting this video. It solved my indicator problem and everything is working again now. I did have the issue with the main beam staying on on the rebuild...those moving its of white plastic need to be in the right place or else!!

Does the right turn indicator fail more often than the left? I ask because aaanton's car failed on the right turn indicator and my Peugeot 107 has done the same, while my left turn is OK. My 2007 car has done nearly 100,000 miles, so I know that things will fail from age and usage but I won't junk the car for such a small fault. And I agree with aaanton - cracking little cars with very low road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty, to be correct).

This is a really good vid, but!!! I had this same issue on mine and I fixed it without having to remove a single screw. Just rotate the indicator stalk in a circular motion for as long as it takes. The indicators will eventually begin to work slowly but surely. Just persevere and keep on. Then move the indicator stalk up and down and this will continue to clean the contacts. Again, persevere and if you're as lucky as I was, they will come back. Edit: Make sure you have the ignition on...not necessary to have the engine running but if you have it livened up you can see when the indicators begin to work again. Good luck!

If you spray some wd40 in there as well it will help clean the contacts, eventually you will need to strip down or replace the stalk, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Hiya. I accidentally turned on the car without the airbag plugged in. I had a OBD scanner so thought I’d just be able to clear it. However I can’t clear it. My scanner says no fault. Any ideas what I can do please ?

Fuse 6 fuse 2 and fuse 4 and main fuse 12amp are all in the light circuit there is also a relay, I would think it is either a relay or the switch that is at fault, a multimeter is the next step to check for power at the switch, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

Pattern parts are now available for under £20 on ebay Being lazy i opted to just replace the part, thanks to aaanton11 it took about 20 min from start to finish and the pattern part indicators seem to be working perfectly (hope i haven't just cursed myself) i will see if the original is repairable and if so keep it as a spare. Many thanks anton your video made the job so easy.

Fantastic video, thank you! I have to take the speedo cluster out of my wife's Aygo soon - the indicators work on the outside but the instrument cluster only shows the right one working, I believe it's a common fault and the unit needs to go to a specialist for repair - do you think I can remove the cluster without having to take the steering wheel off?
