Phantom of the Opera- Iron Maiden LIVE 1980

Live with Paul Di'anno and Dennis Stratton at the Marquee in 1980. (I edited this! Might be some continuity / syncing errors at parts due to the fact that the entire footage of the song is either non-existant or very rare. I spliced in footage from another song they played at the same show and tried to match it up best I could. I believe the other song which footage exists for is "Iron Maiden". Taken from a 1980 documentary about the band.)

This is the best live performance of Phantom I have ever heard! Clive Burr's drumming is incredible in the middle section. This is awesome. I have this on cd in my collection. It sounds amazing cranked up in headphones!

Thanks for taking the time to put all the pieces together Sean. Bruce is amazing, but in this footage Paul is out of this world. Such a punk attitude and a wonderful voice and stage presence, and he was just a kid!...Comparisons are such a waste of time.
@dragonseye00
@dragonseye00 5 лет назад
You're right, comparisons are a waste of time. Paul couldn't deal with the success and was going into drugs and alcohol. But Bruce Dickinson would have never entered iron maiden if they wouldn't have had the success, intensity and music they've created with Paul. So essentially, Bruce is in Iron Maiden thanks to the great job Paul did as a singer... And Iron Maiden is still there and a legend thanks to the work of Bruce. Every singer brought in a bit of themselves, Blaze was not that relevant, but he avoided Iron maiden from breaking up after Bruce left. But Paul and Bruce are what made iron maiden this legendary (and of course Steve Harris, but in the end the singer is always essential for the people, we saw that with the decline of maiden after releasing virtual XI, which was a really far below average album... Despite having 2 or 3 really good songs on it)
@hsaavedran

Excellent work with the video, and fantastic; strongly agree with Paul and Clive, it was their best time without a doubt ,,, indeed the comparisons are odious.

Omg. Paul Di'anno was a phenomenal singer. He sounds amazing. I always knew it since 13 when I fell in love with Iron Maiden but I didn't realize how great he was until now. Truly. ...it all worked out great for them and Bruce and Bruce is a God. But Paul started off the legacy and Bruce picked up this blazing torch.

I'm about to do my 4th Iron Maiden tribute as a drummer. Watching this, Clive's speed on the fast hihat part is insane. I really think the reason Clive was fired was because he set the bar for himself so high that he couldn't maintain his level to Steve's liking on long tours. I don't blame alcohol for that. I blame Clive because these drum parts are so fast that no normal human being can possibly do that shit on a long tour. I hope that makes sense to non-drummers.

OMG - found this by chance, I was at both the Marquee gigs! Still got the original red t-shirt & 'soundhouse tapes' from that period in the attic somewhere - and possibly the ticket stubs unless my mum got there first. Sweat dripping off the ceiling, feet sticking to the floor.. happy days. Maiden were the b******s, never quite the same when Den Stratton was elbowed. An excellent guitarist but maybe it wasn't edgy enough. As for PD, well I remember seeing Dickinson hanging around the bar at one of the gigs (actually, at loads of Marquee gigs!), like a parasite - too cool to chat but happy to have his glass filled. Obviously waiting to get his feet under the table; Samson were not in the same league, as proved to be the case. Oh well. Thanks for the memories, Sean. Appreciate it. I can show my kids that once upon a time I was cool!!!! :)
