Thank you Rory for not only taking the time to watch my video but choosing it for your breakdown video! I am the guy in the backwards hat and I love the feedback and I will definitely incorporate into my game! Always trying to get better! 💪🙏❤️

Awesome. Thanks for taking it as constructive criticism and not me just being critical. As I mentioned, I think all for you very good players. There are just some little things that if you could correct, you'd all move up to the next level. Can you tell me which state you live in?

@@pickleballpick-apart9787 I am in NY and the rest are in NJ/PA. Have you seen the comments I usually get on my page? Haha if I can’t take criticism I should not post! Btw, my hands usually help me out when I don’t have intent on my attempted resets. Defense Wins Championships! We were also HUGE underdogs in this match against two 5.0 DUPR players and probably one of the biggest wins of my short career so far! 🤣

As usual, your commentary is spot on. I liked how you emphasized how important getting some angle on your paddle with balls below the net. This is especially true when doing a backhand. Too often when hitting a backhand players have a flat paddle with no angle to get the ball going up to get it over the net. I try to get players to turn their wrist on a backhand so they put an angle on the paddle. Too often they lock their wrist in a way that is flat and the balls go in the net. You mentioned frequently that players had their paddles held too low and couldn't respond to hard volleys in time. One way I have instructed players to keep their paddles up is to have them bring up their non-paddle hand and touch their paddle out in front of them after every shot. You see alot of pros doing this. Some even bring up their hand to do a double grip. Watch Riley Newman do this. He even sometimes hits with his left hand after doing this.
@pickleballpick-apart9787
@pickleballpick-apart9787 6 месяцев назад
I think suggesting to a player to have their non-paddle hand touching their paddle is an excellent idea. I recently started doing that and it definitely helps. It helps me get my paddle further out in front and it also seems to help me keep my elbow out in front of me. Thanks for your comment.

Yesterday, I was talking with a player, we are both around 3.25 I’d say, about a third shot drop and how I was practicing that. She kind of looked at me like she didn’t know what that was, and then said oh those don’t ever work. I said well I’ve been working on it, and I believe it’s a very important shot. Then I actually made a perfect one, she said I should’ve spiked it. I had to chuckle to myself because she just doesn’t get it. I have a lot of fun, even when I lose, the practice is so beneficial!

I put way too many balls in the net trying to do third shot drops. So frustrating if you were my partner. lol . But then I started doing drills of hitting in kitchen from different areas of the court. Now my partners compliment me on my high success rate. Just gotta take the time do more drills and fewer games to dial it in.

You mentioned near the end of the match that these players should be more patient in the dink battles, and compared them to the pros. One possible explanation, which has two different effects is that these folks just can't dink as well as the pros. One effect is that they hit it into the net, and the other is that since then can't dink as well as the pros, they have the tendency to hit dinks too high, giving the opponent the chance to speed it up.
@pickleballpick-apart9787
@pickleballpick-apart9787 6 месяцев назад
Those are all good points. The guy in the backwards cap left a comment thanking me for doing the pick-a-part and also telling me that the team they were playing against are 5.0 players. 5.0 players, for the most part, dink 10 times more often than they did. I really don't understand how they can play at the 5.0 level and be successful.

Rory, good call for more patience. My goodness! These four players kept speeding up when there was not really a good opening to do so! White player's speed-ups are better-disguised; they look just the same as his FH roll until ... SURPRISE! Black, White's partner, played hot & cold. Possibly he was having a bad day...? Red Sleeves (Not Guilty) if you lowered your center of gravity by flexing your knees a bit, you'd move better and quicker. You are standing so erect in this game you're not responding as quickly as you ought. (Something I focus on for me, as I am tall. I notice a lot of players over 6' 2" stand too tall on the court.) Surprised to read this was a 5.0 game. I'd have put White at 4.5 and the others at 3.75 - 4 .0.

It's easy to be an Armchair Quarterback. For me the biggest "no no" was Grey Shirt Guys hitting off the Backfoot. I saw it the first time he served at the beginning. It's obvious he hasn't had any lessons in raquet/paddle sports. He won't improve until he corrects this. Glad you pointed it out ~ 16:00.

Too bad the whole court wasn’t in the frame. It didn’t appear to me that the white shirt/black shirt team was 5.0, as notguiltypickleball mentioned in the comments. All of these players were advanced. I think there are more errors than usual because the players were aggressive and using a lot of spin. These players were doing things like: Looking for Erne opportunities, regularly using forehand rolls/backhand flicks, resetting into the kitchen, and doing yellow zone speedups (even if not always successful). These are skills that 3.5ish players and below generally do not have. When players hit poor resets by hitting them too high, at least they are getting the ball over the net. They're clearly trying to reset some of those balls, and not just return them back to the other side, as beginners would. They are playing with that level of intention and at least they're not hitting their resets into the net. And we are not seeing bad lobs, either. The guy in black who hit a great reset but didn't recognize how good it was simply didn't have the feel that his reset was good...so he hesitated. I think this happens a lot with decent or even good players. They're actively trying to reset, but sometimes hesitate and stay back because they don't have enough of a feel to just KNOW that their reset was good. So they stay back in preparation for an aggressive put away from opponent if their reset attempt is too high. Definitely agree that having their paddles in ready position and simply bending their knees more often would make these players better! What a great opportunity for them to improve without much additional work.

Do you have any tips as to how to make sure your paddle isn't too open/angled up? Drills/etc?
@pickleballpick-apart9787
@pickleballpick-apart9787 6 месяцев назад
Yes. Thanks for asking. Stand at the non-volley zone. Have a player toss balls over the net and let the ball hit your paddle. Do not swing. Just let the ball hit your paddle and see what angle it needs to be at for the ball to go over the net. Make sure your paddle is out in front of you. Give it a shot.

@@pickleballpick-apart9787 I'd say that it is a skill we should all focus on learning, not top priority, but can focus on it after 5.0. You can get good without watching until contact, but you'll never be great. It makes you much more consistent and improves quality of hits, without a doubt. It's why all professional raquet sport players do it.
