PicoScope - NOT just for the Advanced Level Diagnostician

Proving the value of using a lab scope has always been a topic of debate. All of us at Trained by Techs have encountered many situations where using a labscope, coupled with our training and experience, helped out tremendously to efficiently diagnose vehicles.
Now for the hard part! Which tool do you use? We firmly believe the use of ANY DSO (digital storage labscope) can be extremely beneficial for a diagnostician in the auto repair industry.
Being discouraged early on while using a labscope is completely NORMAL! However, fear not because TBT is here to help you!
In this video Brian Culotta explains how PicoScope rounded up all of the missing features that other scopes may not have. These missing features were just one of many missing pieces Brian had while starting off as a diagnostic technician.
PicoScope, with its power and well polished user-interface, created a very WELCOMING experience for Brian that other scopes did not provide.
As always, Thank You for the support.

I ran into the same problem 20 years ago with the snap on vantage meter i missed diagnosed a couple of cars because I didn't know what I was looking at even with help of the info in the scope, so I moved away from using it. As I started watching other techs on RU-vid I felt more comfortable and was willing to try it again, so I bought the pico 4425 last year and it has been great. Watching all of yall , scannerdanner, Eric O, Keith with new level, Ivan and many others have been a tremendous help with my diagnostics, not to mention that my diagnosis have been more accurate. So now I find myself using my scope every chance I get. I love the videos that all of yall produce at trained by techs. Thanks again for taking the time to make these videos they are very informative.

GREAT VIDEO I WISH I COULD WATCH INFORMATIVE VIDEOS LIKE THIS ALL DAY THANKS SO MUCH . I HAVE TRIED OUT A FEW SCOPES IN MY TIME AND I MUST SAY UNTIL I USED THE PICO I WOULD ALWAYS GET FRUSTRATED VERY QUICKLY SO I THINK THAT ALONE GOES TO SHOW PICO IS IN A CLASS BY IT'S SELF . BECAUSE IF A TOOL IS FILED WITH FRUSTRATION THAT TOOL WON'T SEE MUCH USE ESPECIALLY IF ITS USED FOR DIAGNOSTIC PURPOSES EVEN TO GO AS FAR AS TO SAY A BIT INTIMIDATING . PLEASE NEVER STOP TEACHING YOU ARE DOING A SUPER JOB !

Another good tip for new scope owners/users is to have your scope set up to make it as easy to access as possible. The more time it takes to get it out and set it up the less likely you’ll be to use it. Once I made a diag cart with my pico on it and the leads hanging on a boom I found myself using it all of the time compared to when I always had to unroll my leads and put them back up afterwards.

Yep start with easy test like ac ripple and work up from there. Anything that helps you to learn to adjust the scope and see and use the set up. Great video!

I tried and tried to learn on my old snapon vantage pro but struggled to pickup useful waveforms. I finally had enough and purchased a Pico deluxe kit and a wps500x 6-7 years ago. The Pico scope is so easy to learn on but is so advance that you don’t put grow it. I just recently used the labscope function on my Snapon Zeus and quickly decided that I still prefer the Pico.

I 2nd that. Not only is it more user friendly, or intuitive, but also the amount of clarity or the manipulation of waveforms is one of the best out there. The support available is also a huge benefit! I've seen more videos using the Pico, than any other scope. Happy Easter Pj!!! 🤗🤗🐰🐣🌸

Excellent video Brian. I agree with your comments about it not being bad so much as non-ideal settings. The most fun is just getting in there and experimenting, especially with some of the tips and tricks shown here. I look forward to more.

Excellent video. I just started using a PicoScope after a few years of using the Verus. Lots of stuff is similar and almost natural, however some things are totally backwards. I have been binging any and all Pico related videos I can find. I really enjoy the shortcuts and tips you are staring with us, Keep up the great work.

@CubasAutomotive

@@TrainedbyTechs so I went over things that I've been questioned about by the new guys. For example, how to even setup for a situation, such as checking cam & crank correlation. Using the wiring diagrams, to figure out signal wires, but then how to adjust vltge and time. I've answered to the best of my ability, plus newbies just need to play with scope to figure out where everything is. Another thing.. what NOT to do... or what precautions to take when connecting to the scope. I always hook my grounds 1st to prevent harm to scope or PC, for example. Some things are common sense, as maybe others aren't? I went straight to wrk after viewing, thought I'd have more time to think.. especially as to what I'd like to see. Drawing a blank right this moment.

Good video. I've been using a Snapon Verus for many years and have always been disappointed by the inability to zoom in on a recording. The problem with recording in a shorter time frame is the buffer will fill up quickly, (about 5 seconds on a 10mS sweep) so you have to be prepared to hit pause or you will lose the event you were trying to capture. I'm seriously looking at a Pico.

Hi Brian, great video. I bought the Escope elite 4 & i'm so disappointed about the features. I can't adjust the scales when using 2 or more channels. All the channels are on top of each other plus many other things that i don't like. It has good stuff like misfire algorythm..Have you used the Escope before? I'm thinking to buy the new pico 4 channels. Let me know what do you think..Thank you

Thanks! So do we! One of the things that drives me to use a scope is the lesson learned each time. This is one tool I believe no one can ever stop learning on. There is ALWAYS something to learn. Thanks again and Happy Easter - Brian

@VoltageDropDiagnostics
@VoltageDropDiagnostics 5 лет назад
adtmatt yes, Toyota and Lexus made a 2 channel picoscope mandatory. But not many dealer techs were ever TRULY trained on how to use it for efficiency. Most dealer techs thinks if you’re pulling out a scope, it’s on a car that can’t be fixed any other way. The reality for me (as a Toyota tech myself) is that they allow me to more quickly diagnose just about any issue,m.

@@adtmatt Yes we have a Shop Pico but unfortunately it is not easily accessible. More smart decisions by management. I been thinking about investing in the U scope.
