I'm not going to be doing story videos for Pikmin. But I will say I do kinda enjoy Pikmin 1's vibe. Olimar stranded, learning to survive thanks to the Pikmin and in turn teaching them to survive. It's nice. And no other Pikmin game has anything that good.

UPDATE: Someone's made a mod for Pikmin 2 that does almost exactly what I asked for in this video. A caveless Pikmin 2. With a bunch of other changes and additions. So cool. Check it out here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6FEry0Gv_dA.html

Personally, I don't see caves as a bad thing. Back when I first played Pikmin 2 awhile ago, my first impression was "Oh cool, more areas to explore and no time limit in those caves-- nice!". I don't see why people genuinely despise the caves in Pikmin 2 when you have games like Rogue-likes/lites where it's all about having the "perfect run" (aka restarting until you have the setup in your favor). Plus I feel like the atmosphere in the caves are serene somewhat amidst the chaos that can ensue.

Plenty of people enjoy the caves, but it's, you know, not even nearly the same thing as the gameplay on the overworld or in Pikmin 1 or 3. The joy of Pikmin is going against the timer and executing a plan to get as much done as possible. If that's what you're coming for, Pikmin 2 isn't that.

@@hedwyn8803 except the overworld segments are exactly the same, they just make up less of the game comparatively. you still have to haul ass to get a minimum day run all the same as the other entries. in fact, it offers its own unique options for strategizing, as you have to decide when to do caves to get wayward pikmin off the map as well as grow more of the types you don't have because you don't have time outside to farm them. the return to awakening wood is such a great day to speedrun because you have to be careful as to what order you do the caves in while also making sure you get enough blues to handle the return to perplexing pool.

I think the devs fully anticipated that players would mash the Reset button if they have some catastrophic failure in a cave. Why else would the game automatically save between sublevels? It gives the player less options for how far they can rewind; either reset the one floor or lose all their progress in the cave. Why else would the caves be procedurally generated? It forces the player to come up with a different strategy for every reset instead of doing the same linear steps over and over until it works. Eventually they start asking questions like “I’ve come this far, I’ve been stuck on this sublevel for an hour, am I really gonna spend another 10 minutes here to save 20 Pikmin, or will the next reset just put me right in front of a Gatling Groink that kills 50 more?” Ultimately, the only thing at risk is your own time, but that’s still a very precious risk.
@capitanpastabase6342

@@capitanpastabase6342 Because there’s already a Reset button on the GameCube, and putting in the extra 30 seconds to walk up to it and speed through the title screen and file select screen makes your choice all the more painful. “Is the situation so dire that I’m willing to go through all that again?” Resetting in Pikmin 1 or 3 could set you back a whole 10 minutes, but a Pikmin 2 reset only sets you back two minutes on average. They had to balance it somehow.

I've mentioned this in the previous video but Pikmin 2 was one of those games I've had a huge turnaround for. I think when I replayed it, I came into after playing 2D Zelda, so I tend to view this game as a sort of 2.5D Zelda. I also kinda like how it's not like the other Pikmin games. To me it's pretty cool how they were able to make a gameplay system that was able to fit in both a time management game and a dungeon-crawling action-adventure game. It arguably works slightly better as an action- adventure since I've used the swarm ability way more in this one. People are so hung up with the notion of "PiKmIn iS sUppOsEd tO Be aN rTs" when the truth is it was barely ever an rts to begin with and the developers never intended the game to be an rts. It was just a label journalists gave it in order to help explain the concept better. It's definitely a valid opinion to prefer one over the other, but I don't think Pikmin 2 is necessarily bad because it's not like Pikmin 1.

I mean, pikmin is suppose to be an RTS, that's how it was designed and what makes it unique. Even then I think most people's issue with 2 is less a genre change, and more a genre change without the appropriate gameplay changes to accommodate. Pikmin 2 focuses heavily on combat, but combat was never the pikmin series strongest element. In fact, I'd argue it's one of the series weakest elements. They're just bland war of attritions, where you just spam A, or swarm, until the target stops moving. If Pikmin 2 wanted to focus on combat, than it should've expanded the combat and add more depth to it, but instead it does the opposite and makes the combat even more shallow then the 1st game by adding purple pikmin and the 2 berry sprays.

How is a game utilizing a real world time limit, in which you need to strategize and manage semi-automated tasks to maximize efficiency, not a real time strategy game..? I'm sure the devs at Nintendo weren't specifically calling it an RTS, but that's what they made

@@bluetoad6848 I mean there's a little thing called enemy design and enemy placement. Games like Castlevania and Mega Man just have you press a single button over and over again, but I guess those don't have interesting combat because you're not doing crazy combos like a character-action game. Though I absolutely agree the purple pikmin and bitter sprays remove a lot of potential depth, but at the same time they're probably your only crowd control options and I don't know what else I'd replace them with.

As someone who has been playing Pikmin since 2001….. Pikmin 2 is designed to be reset. That’s the reason the game saves with each level. Also, the caves are randomized to increase replay value. I also saw you run through electrical barriers with blue Pikmin in the submerged castle, many caves after the player gets used to them. This isn’t just a skill issue, this is a patience issue. Honestly what makes the caves interesting is how rom hack like it is. And not in the kaizo mario kind I mean how it feels like it's using and abusing mechanics to the absoulte fullest, similar to the new world in they added in the GBA remake of DKC3. Like for instance how in later caves how blowhog enemies are placed near cliffs so the way they shake of pikmin is used to throw pikmin into the void which is incediously smart. Also some of the floors where the designers just wanted to have a laugh like the 1 of every bulborb floor. Is that good design? Probebly not, but it is refreshingly unique. Also the piklopedia is super cool and deserves a mention.

Everyone I see bag on Pikmin 2 show the most embarrassing clips. "What do you mean I can't just ignore the cannon beetles". Are some of those trolls? How do you not see the electric hazard, why would you bring 100 strong in the empresses arena and chuck them so carelessly. The maps may be the "same" place, but they are entirely new maps with similar aesthetics. Like I will never understand that criticism, knowing the map from the first game does nothing to tell you how to play through Pikmin 2. Their layouts and flows are changed, the goals and solutions are different and the enemies are different. The throw-sort is like that because you use too many Pikmin. The game has two captains and a feature to split Pikmin by color. You should very rarely have a full squad with you, the game punishes that behavior over and over again. You sort and bring what you need for the task at hand, or risk losing what you didn't need to bring. Learn boss patterns, use small squads and recall them as danger arises. Walls in caves are there to gate optional nectar and flowers. Enemies take out your flowers and certain colors, so throughout it you need more. Walls are usually guarded by enemies (I do admit the RNG does fuck it up sometimes, but the caves aren't all RNG), so that means another fight to consider. Do you risk losing more pikmin to empower your squad, or sometimes forcing you into another fight to get enough X type back to a certain number. And time-sinks are kind of important for games with high reset ability. Do you want to sink more time into the game by resetting, knowing I'll need to spend X amount of time getting the walls down again. The day timer is there because night is still a danger and the days change the environments. Certain things only spawn on certain days in certain locations. Enemies respawn and the map reacts to you taking time elsewhere. The tougher caves means fighting your way to a cave, making sure you keep your numbers strong on the way. If you do well that means you can enter the cave then and there, but maybe you then need to either swap up your party formation or replenish your numbers depending how that went. You may need to return to another cave to get more purples or whites, or try to grind up a few more sprays before heading in. I wish there was more challenge at times, but this is Nintendo, they make games for all ages at the end of the day, and the endgame is still very challenging. Also there is still a Day Timer, your actual life and willingness to invest more time in the game. The game doesn't need a timer when most people have a natural one of How Long Do I Want to Play? How much do I want to grind? How perfect do I want this run to be, how long am I willing to reset/how many pikmin is fine to lose. It gives people the freedom to speedrun if that's their jam, with enough narrative reason to hurry. Olimar has a family to return to, a boss in financial trouble, and a friend in need of rescue.

I'm just gonna say on the time management points that the Hocotate ship straight-up tells the player not to hurry, that "haste makes waste". Right after forcefully ending the day, regardless of what you want to do. Nothing more clearly shows that Pikmin 2 doesn't care about time management than it telling the player to stop caring about time management

This may be footage of Pariah's first playthrough, or since he mentioned playing through the game once before, perhaps this is his second playthrough and it's been so long that he forgot those things. I think the complaint about the maps being the same is more a complaint about reusing assets from the first game. Some people find it a turnoff, some don't. Personally, I agree with you on how the layouts and flow are changed enough in Pikmin 2. I can see where you're coming from with point 3. That said, I can't get behind point 4. What Pariah was talking about was specifically the breakable walls that hide nothing but dead ends, as the random generation often relegates them to. (He didn't exactly show the best footage to showcase that, but eh.) And I have to agree with him that obstacles that only serve to eat up your time in an environment with no time limit are pretty meaningless. And how are time sinks supposed to be a favorable tradeoff to high reset ability? I'd think that high difficulty is the more reasonable tradeoff. Trying to offset the ability to reset every floor with time sinks sounds like the devs were trying to frustrate or bore the player enough to not rely on that trick. Why even make that trick in the first place, then? We know the worldbuilding reasons why the day cycle is still in play, but Pariah is questioning why, from a gameplay standpoint, Pikmin 2 didn't just go all the way with eliminating timers so that it would be consistent with itself. Night being dangerous is a game mechanic from the first game, which Pikmin 2 obviously wanted to distance itself from. As for certain things spawning on certain days, I'm not sure what exactly you're referring to--maybe the Bulbear family in the Perplexing Pool?--but the devs could just as easily have removed those day-specific features or made them the default. As for your description of the tougher caves and how to tackle them, I don't recall that being a point of contention in the video. There's still a day timer in our actual lives? By that logic, every video game carries an element of time management and optimization. Just because there's a narrative reason behind needing/not needing to hurry, doesn't mean the game design hasn't radically changed between Pikmin 1 and 2.

I never understood the complaint about pikmin 2 not having a day limit. Pikmin 1 and 3's limits are so generous I've never felt any tension from their inclusion. To me it's always just been like a scoreboard to see how fast you can beat it, which works for every game. To me the tension and excitement come from tough enemies and situations, which is why I rank the games 2 > 1 > 3, basically how difficult each one is. Also 2 has the best world and character building
@321cheeseman
@321cheeseman 11 месяцев назад
Pikmin 1's time limit is very forgiving, but also _just_ demanding enough that if you aren't at least somewhat focused on getting ship parts and not losing too many pikmin it's possible to waste too much time. You _have_ to try _at least a little._ The time pressure exists, even if it's minor. Pikmin 2 lacks virtually any pressure to perform well other than whatever intrinsic value you draw from doing so. There's nothing mechanically or narratively telling you to spend your time effectively. You can take 20 days just grinding white and purple numbers, and spicy and bitter sprays, and that's totally valid and not stupid at all in Pikmin 2. I kinda like the caves on paper, with their focus on managing pikmin numbers since getting more while underground is difficult, and they trow tons of dangerous enemy and obstacle combinations at you in them, but the autosaves on every single couple-minutes-long floor, and how utterly broken sprays and purples are, relieve almost all tension they could possibly provide. Like, a room full of blowhogs and careening dirigibugs or whatever _should_ be one hell of a trial... but you can just bitter spray them... or reset if anything goes wrong and lose virtually no progress. If you're ranking in terms of difficulty, I think 2 certainly has the hardest content, but offsets this by providing you with the most powerful tools, and ultimately 1 is the more challenging game. 1 > 2 > 3, at least for difficulty.

@@321cheeseman You get like 10 days to fuck around with in Pikmin 1 and the same auto save everyday feature that people blast Pikmin 2 for. You can reset everyday in Pikmin 1 to be perfect in the same way people complain about floors in 2. Add a 40~ day timer to Pikmin 2 and all the same strategies still apply. You would have 10 days at least to grind for sprays, which really would be more than you need if you play the game strategically.
@321cheeseman
@321cheeseman 11 месяцев назад
@@MrMisterNameless *_"You can reset everyday in Pikmin 1 to be perfect in the same way people complain about floors in 2"_* No, they're both fairly lenient systems, but that's where the similarities end. The main areas are open, offer a variety of objectives to tackle, are populated with time-sink obstacles (many of them optional), etc. and run under a 13 minute time limit. Because of this, your efficiency matters, and there's _something_ to lose when you've done everything really well for, say, 10 minutes and then a bomb rock blows up half your squad. It's not just _"I've gotta redo all that",_ it's _"I've gotta redo all of that really efficiently"_ or alternatively _"maybe I'll try dealing with a different set of objectives this time"_ or even _"maybe I'll try a different area"._ Replaying a day is much more involved and gives you much more freedom than a cave sublevel. The caves are strictly enemy and obstacle gauntlets, and you bring the spoils back to the ship afterward, with no time pressure. Efficiency doesn't matter. Planning barely matters. There's no meaningful choices to be made, and next to no improvements to be made beyond saving more pikmin (which isn't even hard when you have purples and sprays). Did you get all the treasures on the sublevel without losing too many pikmin? That's all that matters in the caves. This would be perfectly fine, but autosaves every few minutes here, when your only real form of engagement with the game is surviving enemy encounters, undermines the experience. The saves are just too frequent, you lose virtually no progress shamelessly save scumming in the caves. If the saves were only on every rest sublevel and the randomization had a greater impact on how you have to deal with things, I think it would be far, far better.

I think the Pikmin 1 and three time limits are more about what it encourages, rather than what it actually does. The time limits encourage players to go through area's more efficiently, which will be challenging with how the level is set up. Pikmin 2 (and 4, unfortunately) removing this aspect significantly downplays the importance and need to multitask. However, 4 at least tries to encourage multitasking though it challenge stages and makes cave optimization more rewarding. Pikmin also freezing day time while in caves means there is barely any pressure to improve. This alone doesnt kill the game, yes, but it does mean that the game now relies on caves to work, which... Ill just say they have their own issues. If your favorite game is 2, great! I'm glad you get a lot out of that title. I just cant, and i think there is more to it than "its not for me."

I really like this game, including the increased difficulty of it, but it does get downright unfair. It gets unfair enough that its really not cheating in the slightest to restart a floor. You mentioned one of your big dislikes of the caves being the removal of having any kind of timer... I'm curious about your opinion of the one cave in the game that still had a timer. It's many players' most hated cavern. I am, of course, referring to the cave with the Water Wraith. You can only bring in blue pikmin, but you need purples to defeat the boss, a humanoid-like blob of water riding two rollers that can crush all of your pikmin in about a second. On each floor, if you take long enough, the boss appears, is invincible since you can't get purples until the final floor, and tries to crush all your pikmin. You can't _see_ the timer, but there is one. I actually based a D&D dungeon for a game inspired in part by the Water Wraith.

I actually fully beat Pikmin 2 for the first time recently in preparation of 4 and I feel like I'm kind of in the middle. I like the caves up until around the halfway point because I just get tired of them by then. There's just not that much variety to them, so them making up like 80% of the game gets so tiring. If they cut the amount of caves in half: I'd like this game so much more. I still like it, but it's easily my least favorite Pikmin game by a pretty wide margin. There's a reason I took so long to finally beat it, when I've already beaten 1 & 3 muliple times now.

The caves still have real-time strategy elements. RTS refers to the fact that the events are not turn-based, not that the strategy must revolve around time management. It is still an RTS game if the strategy revolves around attacking optimally as to not lose Pikmin and careful planning (strategising), which is exactly what the caves are. It doesn't matter to me if people like or dislike Pikmin 2 (I haven't personally played it yet), but it seems ridiculous to criticise the caves for a lack of RTS elements when all it does is shift the type of strategy required. In fact, it could be argued that Pikmin 2 is more of an RTS game than Pikmin 1 as it has more elements taken from the genre. This fact doesn't invalidate you not enjoying this type of RTS as much as what is employed in Pikmin 1, but I think it shows its an extension of the concept of Pikmin 1, not its antithesis as you described it. Edit: you later say that caves are padding and that there is the same amount of Pikmin gameplay as Pikmin 1. The caves are just as much Pikmin gameplay as any other element, you just don't like it. If what you said were true, every single new feature and development in every game series made after the first entry isn't true to the series.

Interesting point near the end of the video about game length, and the common complaint that some games are to short. As a fan of character action games and platformers, never been really that found of saying "X game is to short" in most cases, because some genres like Char action and platformers really do tend to be about replayability and mastering the games mechanics/level design. Like games like DMC 3 or Megaman Zero 3 are not long, but are really fun just to replay and get insanely good at them. Not every game needs to have Xenoblade/Persona length lmao.

Yeah this is one of those games that ends up divisive specifically in hindsight. I loved this game when it came out, and still consider it to be my favorite in the series. In context of its release, it was Pikmin 1... part 2. It was designed to feel like a genuine sequel, something I don't feel like Pikmin 3 provided. Maybe 3 was prettier and more mechanically stable/user friendly, but it felt like it threw away so much about the other 2 that I held dear. At least Pikmin 4 seems to have all of its locations surrounding a building so I at least have an Idea of where I even am. I'm very optimistic for Pikmin 4 and hope that it can genuinely become my new favorite Pikmin game, but as it stands my ranking is currently 2, 1, then 3

Pikmin 2 definitely threw away more things about Pikmin 1 than Pikmin 3 did. No more subtlety, it got rid of the darker aspects and details (eg: just compare the countdown of 1, how the music goes more and more silent until it mutes on "1", vs the countdown of 2), it made Pikmin 1's ending weaker since Olimar didn't reunite with his family after all and his ship got sold immediatly in the opening cutscene, and the atmosphere in general is more childish and dumb (fart and burp noises, Olimar sounding like an idiot, etc.) with no stakes involved. Heck, it essentially changed the genre with the removal of time limit from an RTS to a resource management rougue-like.

Again, don't really know if you're someone that cares much about control gimmicks but it's something to keep in mind. Looking forward to it.

Here’s my honest opinion on Pikmin 2, since the Wii version of Pikmin 2 was my first Pikmin game as a kid I do have big nostalgia for the game, but putting the nostalgia of the game aside, I honestly kind of love how this game is designed personally, firstly, I honestly think the reason why Pikmin 2 reused maps from 1, was yeah, because 2 only came out three years after 1, so it makes sense they would want to reuse content and because of the caves, but I also always think that the reason you go through the same areas but they look a lot different is because since when you go through light speed in fiction time progresses faster, Olimar progressed so much in time to where every areas looks and feels different even though he was just on PNF-404, like, a few hours to a day ago, probably! The whole thing with your Pikmin getting shuffled around in weird places, to where you through Pikmin you didn’t want to throw at the wrong thing to through is annoying, I feel like that was kind of the point. Like, there are 100 of these little dude, do you really think all of them as living things can just shuffle automatically on command! I mean, it’s fine to have a problem with it, but I personally think having Pikmin be kind of clumsy with how they walk, tripping, and still being in your party when dismissed makes them feel more alive instead of 100 little robots that do everything for you on command perfectly! Now, here’s where I talk about the caves, I was afraid to play this game again after so many years and play through the caves since it’s been at least 8-9 years since I last played this game and I didn’t even get to the post game stuff when I was a kid at 10 years old and under because of how hard the caves were for me because I wasn’t as experienced with Pikmin back then since it was my first game! But after playing it again on the Switch when I’m 19, almost 20, I absolutely love them (even tho currently I’m still going through completing post game stuff, but at least I completed the main game lol) and here’s my reasons why! For one, there isn’t a time limit in the caves, which for a story perspective I agree makes literally no sense at all, I think gives you a breather on just chilling out and not having to get as much stuff done in around 13 minutes, while also letting you think for a bit about which Pikmin to use on which enemies, hazards, and treasures that you see in your surroundings to get things done, and I personally just love that unique bit of gameplay for the caves that let me rest for a bit, even tho I still love the time limit with the days! Secondly, the fact that you can’t sprout anymore Pikmin in the caves, and you have to stick with the 100 or less that you being in until you find the exit, I absolutely love what this does for the gameplay! Since you have a limited number of Pikmin with you in the caves, it lets you strategize in a different way than being on the surface, instead of worrying about the time limit to get a lot of stuff done in a limited time, you now have to worry in the caves about having as many Pikmin survive until the end of the cave for the boss and other things like carrying treasures that you need certain Pikmin to get, so I love how differently the caves make me think there! And honestly, I think both the no time limit and the limited Pikmin really make the caves fun for me and half of the Pikmin community and honestly just work well together! If you had the time limit continue in the caves, you would have to rush through them and maybe not be able to get all the treasures in them or have dumb Pikmin deaths a long the way that you didn’t mean to happen a lot of the time, which would make the game too hard, and then if you didn’t have the Pikmin limit on the caves and you could sprout them in there, the caves themselves you would be boring, because who cares if 50 of your Pikmin would die, you can just get 50 more from the ship and continue on with no difficult! So I feel like those two changes to the gameplay, plus the fact that the caves can get long and hard (should’ve rephrased that lol) AND the fact that the are so many more enemies in them than the surface that’s the caves a lot more fun for me on repeat playthroughs to see if I can have less Pikmin die in certain caves, similar to on repeat playthroughs of the first game in seeing yourself getting more and more parts in less days each time! And I do have a solution for your opinion on Louie not being useless in the caves, six words, grouping up Purple and White Pikmin! Because of Louie, I can have him keep the Purple and White Pikmin with him around where the ship is to where most of the time no enemies are, and then I can have Olimar keep the Red, Yellow, and Blue with him to progress through the cave until I need the Purple or White Pikmin for something and also until I know there aren’t any more falling rocks, bomb rocks, or enemies! All of those things combined made me really enjoy the caves on the same level as I do the surface gameplay even tho they are widely different! So, now that I’ve said pretty much everything I love about Pikmin 2 and how it adds more layers to the Pikmin formula, I want to state one thing here, I don’t get what people mean when they say that they feel that the caves COMPLETELY take away what they love about Pikmin, because my thought-process is, why do you have this weird notion about what a Pikmin game is SUPPOSED to be, why can’t Pikmin 2 have these unique qualities to it, doesn’t it make for a unique experience to play through, making it so you can play through 1 and 2 and have a still fun, but completely different experience personally for me! Also, I’m fine with Pikmin 2 being the way that it is, because it shows that the people who worked on this game, cared so much about the people who didn’t like the first Pikmin how it is, that they made the sequel something for them that they can get into and have fun with, and they honestly kind of warms my heart! You don’t get that with a lot of game franchises, usually the sequels to games usually stay almost the exact same with one or two new mechanics that don’t really add anything to the game! So yeah, I’m fine with Pikmin 1 and 3 being the games where you care more about how many days and how much time you spend each day to 100% the game, and Pikmin 2 and MAYBE 4 if it’s going to be extremely similar where you care more about the Pikmin you take with you! BOTH of these formulas for Pikmin can exist and BOTH of them can be Pikmin, like, just because Pikmin 2 made these new mechanics doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have the same soul as the first game! So, that’s my stance of Pikmin 2, I personally love it, and it may be my favorite Pikmin game now, even tho I love all three of the games! Since 4 is going to be similar to 2, I wonder if when I eventually play it it’ll trounce 2 as my favorite, but we’ll wait and see! Btw, for anyone who has read this comment all the way through, thank you so much for reading all the way through, I honestly didn’t think this comment would be this long! LMAO And btw, even tho I was a bit harsh on some people’s opinions of this game, if you didn’t personally agree with me on my stances of this game and you still hate Pikmin 2 and love 1 and 3’s time limit focus more, than that’s perfectly fine, I’m not going to force you to like it more, I just wanted to at least have you guys give 2 more of a chance to accept some of its unique little quirks that change the gameplay, without hating it completely because it isn’t pIkMiN eNoUgH, whatever that means! I hope that my comment helped brighten this game up for you more and have a more positive opinion of it, but if not, fine! I’ll still love all of the Pikmin games (expect for HEY! Pikmin, I saw the full game on a stream before, and that game is a big yikes LMAO) Hope all of you reading this have a fantastic day, and you are an amazing person! ❤️

This was a great video. You really managed to put into words my feelings about this game. Going into this game shortly after Pikmin 1, I thought to myself: "I bet the hate for this game is unwarranted and the caves are gonna be very fun". But after playing like, 10 in-game days, I just stopped playing because I was finding it INCREDIBLY boring, and I just couldn't put my finger on why. You managed to, though, and now I know for sure that I won't enjoy it and don't have to keep giving the game chances. Also, about your comment concerning the caves in Pikmin 4: From what I've seen, It seems that the caves in it are really just more of an extension of the overworld rather than being something completely different and also seem to be more of a side thing rather the main gameplay of the game. Apparently they're also handmade and focused on puzzle solving, and that alone sounds so much better than what Pikmin 2 does with it's caves.

Playing with 1 huge squad can be easy / boring, but accomplishing 3 tasks at once and getting a low day count / a lot of fruit at once feels incredible. It's really designed for you to have 20-40 Pikmin per captain in different areas from eachother. The mission mode is also best in the series!
@doommustard8818

The caves in pikmin 2 are so boring, they play like trying to help 100 grandmas cross the street. The rest of the pikmin series you are asking 30 grandmas go play bingo, 20 grandmas go bring me some cookies, 40 grandmas rebuild my space ship, 10 grandmas go fight that crab,! The rest of the series feels like coordinating a massive army to complete hundreds of objectives at a time. But pikmin 2 was really like : what if instead you just played crossing guard. the optimal strategy for pikmin 2 is the easiest, most risk averse, most unoptimized way to play pikmin and the game actively discourages you from trying to do better than that. I think that the cave gameplay could have worked if they just did something interesting with the idea, its a nice way to break up the super time manage-y gameplay with little spurts of something different, except its always just playing crossing guard, and with how much cave gameplay there is, it really feels like the time manage-y gameplay is there to be something new and interesting to break up the monotonous cave gameplay. But that attitude doesn't work because the time manage-y gameplay is all about time management I need to be thinking about it before I leave the cave so that I can not waste time trying to figure out what I'm doing when the clock is actually running. So it has to be the caves break up the time manage-y gameplay otherwise it just doesn't make sense to think about it that way at all.

I completely agree with you. The Caves in 2 are just... boring. Or they're frustrating to no end. With literally no in-between 😭 You're either playing it as safe as possible, spending 15 minutes per sublevel clearing out all the enemies with purples, deleting elemental hazards with your other pikmin, coaxing out the bullshit falling rocks and bomb rocks and walking bombrocks and falling enemies, bringing the loot back, and rinsing and repeating and rinsing and repeating ad nauseum; all this with the constant threat of just inescapable level layouts that *force* a reset. Or you're bumrushing each cave with reckless abandon, being dealt a most _gruesome_ gauntlet that, aside from Pikmin 2's procedural generation, can only be matched by a cruel 12 year-old with Mario Maker. A level that feels like it was designed with the express purpose of making you not want to play. If you're a skilled player, *either way you play through these caves, you're fucked.* It's either boring out of your mind, or it's the most infuriating "oh, well that's just Pikmin 2" moments imaginable. I can't stand this game.

skill issue to the max lol. pikmin 2 is more of an rts than all other games due to managing resources. your managing pikmin in areas you cant just regrow them, your managing sprays, your choosing which caves to tackle to get upgrades that will help in other specific caves. example - going to sub complex for the bulb to make submerged castle a bit easier.

Pikmin 2 is just kind of annoying to me. I don't mind the idea of the caves, but the fact that they are procedurely generated means that you really can't get much in terms of notable level design or puzzles. Instead you get random rocks falling from the sky, or enemies randomly ambushing you before you can even react, or bullcrap traps that can murder all your Pikmin instantly. Yay what fun. And the fact that the caves go on for an eternity just makes things way worse. I don't dislike this game but it's by far my least favourite of the trilogy and it's not even close.

@hedwyn8803
@hedwyn8803 11 месяцев назад
Pikmin 1 was based on a foundation of time management, risk assessment, planning, and multitasking. It's the entire basis for the game design. The Caves in 2 actively discourage time management (no timer, needing to play carefully), multitasking (you have to practically escort your pikmin half the time, because otherwise pikmin carrying treasures back will trip a trap and all die), planning (sublevels are procedurally generated and there's no benefit to getting them done quickly), and risk assessment (the game just tells you what pikmin types to bring, and some are almost always good). It's more like if you made a 2D Mario game, but 85% of levels had no platforming, even though you could still jump.

I hate it when sequels do this. When they go the route of chasing money over the hearts and minds of their fans always pisses me off. Pikmin 2 and Mass Effect 2 are two of the biggest sequels in mind to do this. People point this out on the former but seldom do so with the latter. Both of them completely miss the point of what made the original great. I never played Pikman but even I can tell that Pikman 2 is a middle finger to Pikman 1 fans. To me it's worse in Mass Effect 2's case because it's changes are lauded and forever changed the series. At least Pikman got back on track with Pikman 3. Mass Effect got dumber with each new entry.

Wtf? You didn't even play the fucking game and think is in position to say anything about pikmin 2? There is a very big part of the fan base that sees this game as their favorite, heck this was the game that FORMED the fan base in the first place, cash grab? Pikmin is one nintendo's franchises that have the most low sale numbers! The only reason why we are even having pikmin 4 is because miyamoto (mario's father) convinced nintendo to do so, we are having pikmin 4 TEN YEARS after the last game, pikmin 2 is ANYTHING but a crash grab, they were trying many things and didn't suceed in all of them, but that doensn't mean the game forgot what it's predecessor stabilished, it's a miyamoto game, if you played the 3D mario games, you know how insanely different each one is from one another, miyamoto always had the philosophy of either adding something new to a pre-stabilished formula or not doing anything with the formula at all, why expect miyamoto to change this tradition with pikmin? Do you want an advice? Don't base your opinion on one single video (made by a guy who is known in other fan bases to always have hot and bad takes) about a topic you haven't made your own research on, it saves you from embarassing baseless comments like this one, i recommend watching the pikmin 2 review by Scraffilas productions, he did a much better job reviewing this game than Pariah, both, the good, and the negative points of the game.
