Pirates of the Caribbean is about many things. A warning about greed and betrayal. A son seeking his dad. A broken man with a broken heart. A promise, that ended tragically. A love story, forced to face a curse. A man refusing to save his soul. Cheating death and how to do it. A daughter with a mission that his dad never gave her. A vengeance that surpasses death itself. ... And then there's Jack, carrying the franchise on his back
Yes, and anyone who thinks they can play Jack Sparrow as perfectly as Depp is completely delusional. NOBODY can replace Depp for this specific character.
I love the little salute he gives to his fallen comrades. Just a perfect encapsulation of who Jack is. He may be a Pirate, but he follows his own moral code.
I'll be honest when part 1 arrived on hbo (2012) Untill part 2 on disney (2015) and at worlds end on hbo (2016) to (2017) on hbo premium until on youtube (Trailer) bro it feels like Without Johnny Depp Pirates of the Caribbean is nothing.
I like how in the middle of trying to stop his boat from sinking, Jack takes a moment to pay respects to his fallen pirate brethren. He’s a pirate, but as Will says, a good man as well.
He became a pirate because he caused a mutiny in a ship that was carrying slaves and freed them all, so yes, he is a pirate, but before that he already was a good man
Captain* Jack Sparrow nonchalantly stepping off of the mast and onto the dock as if his ship didn't literally just sink will forever be one of my favorite and most memorable moments in cinematic history. The way he just stands there patiently and then sticks his leg out to prepare for landing.
+One of Those Human Beings r. Border Police: What the fuck is shillings? What is this 1791? I go by the currency of dollars mate , so to 342 666 dollars we can. Forget the id..
This film had me at “what’d ya say to three shillings.. and we forget the name”. Straight away, perfect actor for the perfect roll. Always makes a film 10 times better.
@skinjim123 In the making of (second part if you search for it) Zimmer explains, that he composed all the themes in "two days and a night" and gave them to Badelt (as he himself was quite busy composing for another film), who finished the work. If you compare the soundtrack to other works of Badelt and Zimmer from the early 2000s - there are far more similarities between POTC and The Gladiator or King Arthur, to name two films from that period, than between POTC and Badelt's other music. 🤔
This scene is a perfect metaphor for the franchise. Like the boat, Johnny Depp is the one keeping it afloat, once Johnny stops, it will sink, be useless and barely recognizable. The one that will leave the scene with his head held up high will be captain Jack Sparrow.
It is so weird to think that everything, Will and Elizabeth falling in love, jack getting the pearl back, finding the seceret dead mans chest, being chased by cannibals, the kraken attacks, davy jones and his locker, the bretheren court setting free calypso, the giant whirlpool sequence, and will becoming captain of the flying dutchman, happened all because, jack sparrow, "sailed" into port royal that day
The General No , not only because of Jack . Elizabeth' s falling into the sea and Captain Barbossa' s and his crew' s attack is not about Jack Sparrow .
Yeah, its like he knows that if word got out in a place like Port Royal that he's a Pirate, well, that wouldn't be good. 😆 Only after Commodore Norrington realizes he's a Pirate named Jack Sparrow does he start boosting about it and correcting people with "Captain" Jack Sparrow. 😄
1:08 I remember watching this in the cinema when I was about 12 and laughing so hard at that particular part. Jack enters with everyone looking at him just before and then the camerawork and the revelation that the dinghy has already sunk was just pure comedy gold! 🤣

The Director immediately let's us know that Jack is an honourable man, when you see him salute his fellow dead pirates. Even though he steals and cons people, he's not disrespectful. He takes off his hat and salutes them when no one is around to watch him. He's already established as the protagonist.
@@klawschafer7425 a little boy carries a curse, is saved from the waters and becomes a blacksmith living an average life. Then destiny calls, he has to choose: bravery or cowardice. If he chooses cowardness, the movie ends right there. So Jack Sparrow has to descend upon the young man and transmute him. Transmuted, the coward becomes a hero. Jack Sparrow is the assistant or guide of the protagonist in his completion of the magnum opus. that was easy.
@@criztu Ehh you can argue for Jack being the protagonist in a similar way, with him being the catalyst for the adventure. The three have a good chunk of screentime each

The fact that his ship is completely sinking when he arrives at the port yet he is standing on it with such grace and poise makes me laugh everytime 🤣🤣😂. He was a true pirate in every sense of the word. Long like Captain Jack Sparrow!!! It makes me so sad what Johnny is going through right now 😔. I love that guy.

The music being played straightforwardly is part of what makes it so funny. The scene plays out a comedic scenario but the music doesn’t resort to a more fitting tune, it keeps on playing the same grand theme giving it a hilariously ironic mood
@@ryankeefe6222 true and that also sends a message about the character in that Jack is always dangerously calm and cool under any dire situation, always on the lookout for the opportunity to survive messy ordeals
THIS IS HOW YOU INTRODUCE A CHARACTER!! No dialogue required: all you need are amazing (and in this case, contradictory) shots that tell you exactly who they are. In under 2 minutes, you learn everything you need to know about Captain Jack Sparrow.
+Mastermachine100 ok. i loved all the movies, i thought they were very entertaining and good stories :D but in terms of a hardcore, cold, heartless, one-word critical review... curse of the black pearl: Awesome Dead mans chest: not so good at worlds end: crap on stranger tides: ridiculous
If Depp never got that role. Pirates of the Caribbean wouldn't have been as successful as it was. After the first film Depp carried the movies on his back. I think 1 and 3 were alright. The others were just... Well... Watchable lol
@@mee091000 I thought the second one was much better than the third. At World's End was way too bloated with unnecessary nonsense. Each sequel basically gets worse than the last. I love all three though.
Took all of 60 seconds to make me fall in love with this Character, who by the way is the most Recognized character in cinematic history, by sight, silhouette, Hat, voice, movements, any kid, man or women can tell you who he is, the one and only.... Mr. Smith.
@@MerchantIvoryfilms If you argue that Jack Sparrow is the most recognized character, that would be a fact, not an opinion. That fact however, is incorrect. Don't type factual sentences, that have nothing to do with the truth. He is not the most recognized character, period. Ask for proof if you want, I have that.
Seeing this way back when as a kid it stuck with me then, and it still does now. Even though he's on a tiny sail boat, even though its sinking and everything seems to have gone wrong in his life. He keeps his head up high and carries on.
@@riproar11 Uhm I never, in my entire life, listened to K-Pop or made TikToks, I am, however, a film critic and writer with a degree from NYU, so how about you stop making assumptions about people you don’t know and feel superior to everyone who doesn’t share your taste in movies? :) Jeez…
I LOVE Jack's introduction! It's awesome. Love Jack too^^ "It's a shilling to tie up your boat to the dock..." *Jack looks doubtfully at his sunken dinghy* ALWAYS cracking up at that :)
I love this scene in particular because the build of character is amazing. Everything this scene shows defines exactly what Jack is. We start with Jack watching the horizon from the top of the mast, with an epic pose. The take makes us believe Jack has this huge ship, due to the hight he appears to be standing. He looks confident, epic and determined, like a sort of a "winner" if you agree. The scene making us believe that Jack is SOMEONE. But just on the next take, from one second to another, Jack jumps to the buttom of a, what appears to be a tinny tiny boat, were they reveal us two things that are key to understand Jacks character (1) its not a ship, its just a small boat (2) the boat is sinking 😂🤦♀️ and he uses a bucket to keep it at float. All they told us on the first take vs the one with the sinking ship, kinda creates this funny and contradictory persona of Jack: epic, confident and determined, but with all odds againts him. The next take, the one with the hanging dead corps, hints us two things about Jack (1) he a sort of "Moral Code" related to piracy. This tell us he engages to a piracy code of some sort that he respects (2) They confirm us he is actually a pirate (very important). The next scene, Jack arrives to port with the boat fully sunken like nothing happened, keeping his integrity all the way. While funny, this is a master piece of a scene. With no words spoken yet, they defined to perfection Jacks character. Metaphorically speaking, Captain Jack Sparrow, who sees himself as a huge imposing ship, is actually a small sinking boat that even againts all odds he manages to get to destination anyways, with an epic entrance. This scene forshadows Jacks character: he is a pirate that will always find a way to get from point A to point B, with nothing stopping him from doing so, no matter the circumstances. With no shame nor nothing to prove, Jack keeps character and hopes high. In the last scene, were Jack nimbly persuades and also steals from the tax collector, it show us very well Jacks remaining attributes that thrusts his persona: his persuasive, thief and opportunistic nature, his misleading mind games, and most of all... The luck that surrounds him. All above said, this scene is one to take in note on how to build character. Its simply a master piece.
I know this is not the place to talk about it, but Sparrow is Hermes/Mercury, the Spirit who perfects, transforms, transmutes the soul. look at the name: will turn - this is pure hermeticism, the black(lead) will turn to red(gold).
@@Sidowse if they came up with a coherent story for movies 4-6 it would have been fine I guess. But making them standalone movies is just hallow and undeserving to the franchise.
Not really Red Rackham (the pirate from Tintin) is completely fictionnal character brought to the world from a mix of different things, he got his name from from Jack Rackam, his outfit by a representation of the buccaneer Daniel Montbars and his face by... Cardinal Richelieu... a french clergyman & stateman from the 17th century... (it's as weird as it is true).
I love how in the beginning you think he's leading some majestic ship only to realise it's just a small boat that's already sinking LOL...he's still captain though...that's Jack Sparrow!
What an entrance. I mean it tells use everything we need to know about Jack. He’s both incredibly lucky and unlucky at the same time. Just goes with the flow of life. Has respect for his fallen pirate brothers (I love the salute he does)
JP is Pirates of the Caribbean he created the franchise. The other actors were great but he's the one that brought it all together I can't see myself enjoying it without seeing him.
