A movie from American animation studio that feels like a Japanese film that is set in Italy…and somewhere in all that, there’s sea monsters

There’s a reason why Alberto and Luca’s friendship can be sour: his father abandoned him and he doesn’t want Luca to do the same. That’s why he’s jealous of Luca having a friendship with Guilia.

Here’s just a deep analysis of what Alberto probably felt throughout his time living alone, and after he met Luca. Imagine for a year +, the only person most closest to you, abandons you. You have no clue if you have any other relatives so you decide to stay put and try to the survive with what you have. You have almost all the freedom you could want but you’ll still be living alone, away from everyone else… Deep down, Alberto probably thought of this as great thing, but the more the days passed, the more he realizes that his dad will never come back and that his loneliness will continue to be drastically worse. He can’t live in the human town because it’s dangerous, nor would he want to stay holed up in the sea village for the rest of his life. Except when he found Luca, this completely changed him. He could finally be somewhere new, with someone new! It’s a revolutionary event for him knowing that he’s been abandoned for more than a year, alone… But along came Giulia and knowing that she could take away Luca from him, it’s understandable that he’d be jealous. He was alone for a year, finally found someone to hang out with, and now that person is leaving him. And this all happens for barely less than a month! One month is little compared to Alberto’s time spending his days alone for about a year. But then he might’ve realized that throughout his time with Luca in the town, he also spent time with a father he never had. A dad who wasn’t his, but felt like his ❤️ And that’s why he decided to be with Giulia’s dad in the end. While he can’t always be there for his best friend, he knows that there are other people close to him that need him.

Luca is proof it doesn't have to be a magical world for one to dive (ba-dum-tss) right into what's going on. The animation is absolutely stunning and really makes you feel like you're hanging out with Luca and Alberto in the Italian Riviera. I'm sure this movie will help boost Italy's tourism industry back in the right direction And the fact Studio Ghibli even influenced Pixar is proof of how incredible and influential of a studio it is

I didn't really find Alberto's conflict with Luca confusing at all. To me it seemed that he had some serious abandonment issues after his father left him, and when Luca appeared and relied on him to learn about the human world he was suddenly important to someone again. He was no longer alone, for the first time in a long time. But then when Luca began learning about the world from Giulia, information that conflicted with Alberto's theories (I'm not sure if the things he told Luca are things he really believed himself or if they are things he made up as explanations on the spot to impress his new friend), and watched as the two grew closer he felt their friendship would threaten his own. It made him insecure that he would become obsolete to Luca and be left behind all over again. So although he does indeed act like a jerk I think the development of his bitterness is completely understandable. He's a kid who was failed by a parent who was supposed to love and care for him and though he didn't cope in the best way I think lashing out how he did when he saw that Luca was yearning to change their plans, to go off and go to human school (an idea inspired through his burgeoning friendship with Giulia), was a pretty "par for the course" reaction.

I think Alberto just had abandonment issue about his father leaving, so when he had a friend to hang out with, who looked up to him and needed him and admired him, he felt threatened when it looked like Luca had ANOTHER friend. He liked Luca being so innocent he followed Alberta as a "human expert", but when Luca started to feel Alberto didn't really know that much, and started listening to Guilia, Alberto got possessive. He wanted to even ruin Luca's chances of going to school just so Luca would have to stick to the Vespa plan. It's simple and naive, BUT he's a kid: I think they wanted to stick to "kid thinking"

Alberto gets upset because Luca seeks to spend time with Giulia rather than him, and it triggers his abandonment issues his father left him with. When he learns Luca is seriously considering going to school with her, that’s when their fight and Luca unwittingly outing Alberto as a sea monster happens. It’s also because Giulia gives Luca access to books, and thus knowledge, Luca doesn’t need to go to Alberto for what he learns is incorrect knowledge, sharing said knowledge being something Alberto enjoyed doing.
@CheshireCat-cm1si
@CheshireCat-cm1si 3 года назад
One of the most common complaints I've heard about this movie is how the stakes are so low (Luca and Alberto have to win a Vespa whilst avoiding being revealed as sea monsters). Personally, I liked it; a lot of recent Pixar movies have high stakes (Cars 3 risked McQueen's career, Coco risked Miguel's life (and also Hector's after-life), Soul risked Joe's...soul, Incredibles 2 risked the representation of a group that had been oppressed for fifteen years, etc). It was nice to have a fairly low-stakes movie for once.
@goldengriffon
@goldengriffon 2 года назад
The stakes seemed pretty high to me. To Luca, the Vespa was a lifeline to escape a life of mind-numbing drudgery, condemned to sit in the dark with his creepy uncle or herd goatfish his whole life. For Alberto, it represented the power to take the reins and have control over one's circumstances, and not have to be alone or ashamed while doing it. Far from being a simple "the kids want a toy" motivation, I think winning the race seemed to be a way for them to live life on their own terms. Of course, in the end the real freedom they achieved was the friendships they made along the way. ;-)

Thanks for appreciating why this movie works. Most reviewers just say "the story isn't very good" and move on. They'll also usually say they enjoyed the movie, but never seem to be able to say why. But you hit the nail on the head: it's about the character's emotions and desires being the driving force, rather than a train of plot points that meet some academic standard of good narrative. After all, how often does real life check all the boxes for what a "good movie" is supposed to be?

I love movies that are exciting, and dramatic, and emotional, and Pixar has plenty of those. But not every movie has to be that, and Luca was something new and different. It was just simple and charming, and had a very nostalgic feeling to it, which in a way almost made it resonate with me more than some more intense films. Everyone bases the “quality” of media on such things as how large-scale, and deep, and thought-provoking it is, but the thing is that not everything is trying to be that. ❤💖 Out of all the animated films of 2021, Luca was my most anticipated animated film of 2021. It looks beautiful like the animation reminds me a blend of hand drawn and stop motion done right into computer and it has a promising concept of taking inspirations of Japanese animated films like Studio Ghibli, promising all star cast, a new Pixar director and taking place in Italy 🇮🇹 and we rarely got any animated films taking place in Italy other than Pinocchio or Porco Rosso. We deserved more animated films taking place in Italy and I'm getting sick and tired and even fed up every movie taking place in New York City because it feels so cliche and done so many times before. This film feels like a Studio Ghibli film because it does have the elements of Studio Ghibli films where it has a coming of age story and child growing up and having a simple slice of life story and makes sense that Pixar loves Studio Ghibli and some of their animated films have references and influences and inspirations of Studio Ghibli films. I wouldn't be surprised if the director Erico Casarosa was a big fan of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki films to make his original animated film. Luca feels more like the Italian kid friendly version of the Road to El Dorado think about it you have the main characters as two male leads who are best friends and who have different personalities where one is curious and optimistic and the other one is smarter and street-wise going kinda like Tulio and Miguel, you have a girl character kinda like Chel but expect make her less sexy and make her younger and little girl, an animal sidekick like Altivo but which in this case a cat of course and the main villain who is like Tzekel-Khan who thinks that the leads 🤔 aren't always what they seem is real, a tall muscular man who acts like a father figure towards the leads like Chief Tannabok and replaced El Dorado with Italy and the movie has a strong themed of friendship. I do get some El Dorado vibes in this movie. I wouldn't be surprised if the director Erico Casarosa was a big fan of The Road to El Dorado and decides to make his own original animated film. I was extremely disappointed and upset that Disney removed it on its theatrical release and released it on Disney+. Why they didn't give Luca a hybrid release like both theatrical release and Disney+? I Under this whole pandemic situation I mean come on movie theaters have reopening and we are getting vaccines and the pandemic might end soon maybe around the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022 but still come on? Luca feels more like a theatrical animated movie than a streaming service animated film. I do feel deeply sorry for the animators and the directors of Pixar for working so hard to make their original animated films good or great and they aren't happy with Disney's decision by putting them into streaming service. Hell, I would rather see Spirit Shit Tamed released on streaming service than Luca because the animaiton is lazy and cheap and feels more like a direct to DVD animaiton quality and not in theaters. Just released it on streaming service and doesn't feel comfortable for theaters. With Luca, that movie has a lot of heart, effort and soul making an animated film with a great story, likable characters, beautiful animation and emotions and themes but Spirit Shit Tamed nope this movie is a soulless lazy garbage cash grab just to make money. 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤

I found the movie very charming. What really drew me in were the setting and the animation: going from the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea to the stereotypical Italian town. The plot isn’t as sophisticated as some other Pixar films, but it has a (fittingly) youthful charm and radiates sense of wonder.

I just realized that Pixar's Luca and Sony's The Mitchells v. The Machines are so far the only 2 best animated features of 2021, most of the other animated films were either meh or downright horrible...

I loved this movie so much!!! I already watched it twice! The story and characters make it so enjoyable to watch. There's lots of humor and emotional moments. Luca is so cute as a sea monster and a human! Definitely one of the best Pixar films right now. I think it's better than the other two Pixar movies that came out in 2020. I hope that this movie makes it to the best list on Top 5 best and worst animated films of 2021.

I am SO GLAD they set a Pixar movie in Italy because i recently watched Cars 2 and it was ABYSMAL but the backgrounds and locations are amongst the BEST PIXAR HAS EVER DONE, ESPECIALLY THE ITALIAN NEIGHBOURHOOD SCENE AND I ACTUALLY CRIED BECAUSE IT WAS IN CARS 2 AND NOT A MORE DESERVING MOVIE 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

I loved this movie, it was funny, it was adorable, it was heartwarming, it was emotional, the animation is gorgeous, the water and the Italian seaside town look so beautiful and realistic, Luca, Alberto and Giulia are so fricking cute, the subplot with Luca's parents trying to find him was so hilarious, LOL, they traumatized lots of poor kids by splashing them against their will, and I like how Ercole isn't a twist villain and he's an unlikable jerk from start to finish, and he gets exactly what he deserved, and as for Giulia's dad, Massimo, well I was suprised with how much I ended up liking him, he's huge and kinda scary but he's such a big softy, he loves his daughter and he quickly developed a soft spot for the boys too, any friend of Giulia is a friend of him. I just loved this movie. This and The Mitchells Vs the Machines are easily the best movies of this year so far. :)

Portorosso sounds close to Porco Rosso, a Studio Ghibli film that takes place in Italy. I like that Enrico is a fan of Studio Ghibli movies and he took inspiration from them and incorporated them into Luca. To me, Luca doesn't feel like a Pixar movie bc the art style looks very cartoony in comparison to the previous Pixar art styles which looks more realistic in comparison (they still look cartoony of course). Not saying this is a bad thing. I can see the Ghibli vibes and it still has Pixar elements such as being emotional and touching (these elements are also part of Ghibli, too). I love this movie so much.
