Love this. It shows how affordable it is to eat plant-based.

Yeah its even cheaper if you shop somewhere where prices are lower. I always shop at Walmart. They have alot of organic stuff and they are constantly adding more.

At about $31.25 per person per week is pretty good considering what people will spend for restaurants, processed foods, and fast food. I don't think that's too much money at all. If eating healthy is expensive, I am not seeing it there or in my personal life. In addition, it's about priorities. I prioritize my health (WFPB) over other things. Knowing what is in what I eat is a priority as well.
@donjincie2258
@donjincie2258 6 лет назад
the problem is its relative more expensive than fast food, as in fast food companies just throw in the most cheapest stuff. Also there is a problem in area where there aren't many supermarkets or even none (yes sadly those area' still exists).
@SittingKittyColorado
@SittingKittyColorado 6 лет назад
If you you are starting out from fast foods, perhaps it is but not everyone does. In addition, a lot of people that think they are eating healthy, as I did, are purchasing a lot of supplements. When eating a whole food plant-based diet, you don't need a variety of supplements to make up for the problems associated with a diet filled with animal products. You drop the supplements down to B-12 (which is all you need) and I bet people just found anywhere from $75 - $100 in their food budget. One doesn't need to get too involved in eating healthy. There are plenty of pauper foods such as beans, rice, corn, and potatoes which is the base of the Blue Zones and those are cheap foods. A person switching from a highly processed diet can easily do so and it's still easy on the budget and it's healthy. Making excuses for other people isn't helpful. If people believe they can't get healthy foods, they wont. I bet I could go to the 7-11 just a block from me and find a can of beans, canned tomatoes, some bananas, apples, and perhaps even some frozen green beans and a package of rice. Not that I would want to live on that every meal but if there were a blizzard here and I had no way to get to the grocery store, that's where I would shop for a day or two. (Which wouldn't happen, I keep canned goods around just in case...) In the video, I calculated $31.25 per person for a week. That's $125 a month. Might be a bit monotonous but that's not a lot of money to spend for healthy food.

It took awhile for TJ's to get organics in but now the store selection is so much nicer than even 5 years ago, and great prices, for example they have the best price on organic Pink Lady apples and organic bananas, both of these are half the cost or less than you would find anywhere else! Glad you showed the frozen items at the end, those are always high quality at TJ's! Also the only place I've seen frozen organic wild blueberries! My only wish is that they start using BPA-free liners in their cans of coconut milk, (that can leech and cause hormonal imbalances!) Thanks for showing us your groceries and sharing your recipes 🙏

Nice haul ! There are 5 Trader Joe's in Chicago and I usually go to the Evanston location since I'm right on the border. Today I learned a few things from you like, liquid amino acids which I'm not familiar with, whole organic oats & organic tofu, not regular ! Don't recall was your Channel or another, I saw some nice cauliflower recipe last week, but I have all saved in my RU-vid Library so I'll find them. TFS, Ms. Jill ! Btw, my Nigerian housekeeper went to Nebraska for her brothers graduation in Omaha with a Masters of IT. He immediately found work in Kansas and she will be taking a bus out there again to visit him. I showed your Channel to her as she is a very conscious, organic and ingredients savvy cook and diner. 😊

My area only has walmart and HEB for groceries. Heb is so expensive for organic but I notice the difference in taste now and have to have organic. I make an exception when they don't have organic collards. But for example organic grapes are $10 and strawberries $5. With 2 greedy teen boys and a girl it adds up. 🙁 but I try to cut cost by buying bags of beans vs cans and frozen veggies bc they last longer.

I wish she had given us some prices. There is a Trader Joes near me, but I don't go there, afraid of the prices. I do go to Aldi's, their sister store, and prices are great. I have gone once to Trader Joes and loved their selection. I guess I will just go and see what they have. I don't focus that much on organic, as it is too pricey. Sandwiches? I can only think of avocado, banana and nut butters. These are the things that trip me up when I am trying to vary my diet within the whole plant based scenario. I did find a "chive" almond cream cheese, but it was awful. Tastes like plaster. Without the chives.

How do you feel about the soy alert? I used to make my own tofu which also left me with a byproduct called okara. I would make tofu patties and okara patties. But it has been a long time since I have done that because of the information on the dangers of soy products unless it is fermented like soy sauce. Weston A Price has information on this. I'd say you got a bargain of a deal. That was a lot of food. I am so pleased with Ranch Gordo beans. My favorite so far is the Christmas Lima's. I had their beans for lunch today over some black rice. A lemon sauce, lemon muffin, or a lemon ice would be nice. I learned the hard way not to put lemon on my asparagus during cooking. It took the color out and looked yucky.

Peppers freeze very well! Green pepper, for example, can be cut into slices or diced into chunks and frozen. Onions too. For fruit, I swear by dehydrators. Eat as much fresh fruit as you can, then when it starts to become overly ripe, dehydrate it! Also, you can make smoothies out of extra ripe fruit too. Hope that helps!

What I don’t understand is that although I know it’s food for two weeks, there is so much produce there that doesn’t look like it would last two weeks. I would love to stock up but it won’t last, especially from Trader Joe’s. I find their produce goes bad more quickly.
@miriamodonovan7895
@miriamodonovan7895 6 лет назад
You eat lots more produce when you're not eating meat and dairy. That's not a lot of produce for 4 people if you divide by 7 days. As J says, they eat lots of bananas and avos and they're the most perishable items. The rest would keep fine for a fortnight in the fridge. Oranges, lemons and apples keep pretty well for well over a week out in a bowl.

Also kale lasts way longer than lettuces in the frig as it’s a much hardier texture.

Hi, I like your story and how you changed the diet of your entire family. I do have some questions, have you considered to buy the tomatoes fresh instead of canned or the chickpeas dried instead of precooked and canned, is it hard to find these from organic sources in the US? Also there is some controversy about the aminos and whether or not these are good for you. I see that you use them regularly on your recipes, is there another option that can be more natural? Thanks for the inspirational videos!

I understand completely about the Aminos. Unfortunately my family is super hooked on it now and they don't want to change but I will try to offer more options for my recipes=) It is really expensive to source fresh organic tomatoes here and so that is why I use canned but I have started buying bulk organic dried chickpeas now that my daughter works at Whole Foods and we get a discount =) They taste so much better and I don't have to worry about what is in or on the cans.

That's maybe just over $25 per person per week, which isn't much at all.

Do you eat your oats raw or cooked?
@wholefoodplantbasedcookingshow
Nature's Way Sometimes cooked, sometimes soaked as oatmeal and raw as topping🤗

Hi any ideas on how to keep fresh parsley from spoiling?
@wholefoodplantbasedcookingshow
Christine Peters I’ve heard that you can snip off the bottom of the stems and then put the bunch in a glass of water and keep in fridge.🤗
