It has been brought to my attention by several viewers that adding sand to clay soil creates more problems, namely creating a cement-like situation. With further research, I have found this to be true and if I were to do it again, I would try other ways of amending the soil with organic matter, compost, cover crops, etc. Thankfully, my lavender plants are thriving. Just shows how forgiving plants can be to our fumbles. Best of luck and happy gardening!

That’s actually a myth that is heavily repeated by people who have never actually tried it. If that were true, all we would have to do when installing a fence is add sand, which is obviously nonsense. I added two inches of sand when leveling my clay lawn a couple of years ago and…. It’s beautiful and not at all concrete. There’s more to concrete than clay and sand, but people don’t think.

@OurSanctuaryGarden
@OurSanctuaryGarden 2 года назад
This is an English lavender but because I took a cutting from a friend I’m not sure as to the exact variety. I would follow the instructions you have though you’d probably be pretty safe going a little closer, maybe 3-4 feet. I feel like the recommendations are always to space things super far apart when they’d do fine closer. That’s my opinion. Hope that helps!
@neverforgetcandy
@neverforgetcandy 2 года назад
Thank you! It's really to help me a lot when I want to plant a lavender hedge with my heavy clay soil. How far apart would you recommend it to me if I want to plant a smaller bush of Lavender (16"x 16" mature), I can see different answers from 12" to 18" online.
@OurSanctuaryGarden
@OurSanctuaryGarden 2 года назад
I’m glad you found this helpful! Another good suggestion I’ve been receiving is to add materials like perlite and vermiculite to the soil to help add drainage as too much sand can cause problems. So try that as well as adding compost. 😊 regarding how far apart to space them, if you want a hedge, I’d go with the shorter distance. Hope that helps!

Just planted four French Lavender plants in a clay bed that I amended with a layer of manure and a layer or compost and then a layer of mulch. I hope they will be ok. @dilettante527
@dilettante527 2 года назад
I was under the impression that adding sand to clay soil would only worsen the problem. Pea gravel, shale, vermiculate, organic material, etc. sure, but I thought adding sand to clay would effectively create concrete and compound the drainage problem. I'm no expert. Interested to hear your results. Thx!

I'm sorry to hear that! Because you live in a humid climate, you're going to have an uphill battle to get lavender to thrive. One other suggestion to maybe consider, check the pH of your soil. Lavender loves slightly alkaline soil (6.5-7). If your soil is too acidic, consider adding lime. Hope this helps! Happy gardening!
